AOC’s Leftist Sabotage Is Coming Home to Roost

Recent public complaints by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) that New York costs too much for the working class (and should increase taxes on wealthier residents!) are rubbing salt in the wounds of her strident opposition to Amazon locating its headquarters in the city in 2019. A pattern of urban sabotage by social justice Democrats is causing major U.S. cities to experience accelerating economic decline. Despite their efforts to blame white conservatives for this suicidal display‚ Americans see the true causes. READ MORE: AOC Is Pro-Jihad and Doesn’t Know It Chicago and Los Angeles have also chased profitable businesses from town while courting illegal denizens‚ driving up housing costs‚ and defunding police forces. Gov. Gavin Newsom faces stifling‚ nosebleed state deficits even as he tours the world touting the far-left policies that seeded California’s economic failure as a national recipe for social progress. Efforts to blame these gargantuan failures on Republicans fall on deaf ears. This is an economic activity of the social justice kind: Marxist deconstruction. More Jobs Don’t Equal Less Investment AOC has an economics degree from Boston University‚ but her public attacks against Amazon in 2019 suggest she needs further studies. She posted on X‚ formerly Twitter: Amazon is a billion-dollar company. The idea that it will receive hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks at a time when our subway is crumbling and our communities need MORE investment‚ not less‚ is extremely concerning to residents here. It’s possible to establish economic partnerships [with] real opportunities for working families‚ instead of a race-to-the-bottom competition. AOC’s upside-down pseudo-economics charged that Amazon was somehow going to suck money out of government coffers‚ but those tax breaks were offsets against much larger revenue receipts. Amazon’s massive investments in New York would have contributed not only revenue to repair subways but also more taxpaying workers to ride to reliable jobs: Amazon’s 25–40‚000 well-paid workers would have owed city and state taxes on their incomes even if they commuted from New Jersey. (READ MORE: The Fourth Annual Idiot of the Year Awards) Amazon’s proposal was an “economic partnership [with] real opportunities for working families.” AOC pushes rent controls‚ reckless illegal immigration‚ higher taxes on residents‚ and reduced police funding‚ then cries foul when the resulting economic destruction unfolds. She recently doubled down‚ claiming that wealthy taxpayers are not fleeing New York City (they are) and that higher taxes will benefit the middle class she has destroyed: “The people who are moving out of the city are not by and large the wealthiest people. They’re the working class. They can’t afford to live here anymore.” Marxists Like AOC Are Deconstructing the Economy AOC has not created economic opportunities for anyone but ideological grifters. New York City is in economic and social freefall. The emergency room patient is being moved to the ICU‚ and its killer remains at large. Those jobs for working-class people who can “no longer afford” New York were generously offered by Amazon‚ then forcefully jilted by AOC‚ who claimed that achievement as a victory on X: Today was the day a group of dedicated‚ everyday New Yorkers and their neighbors defeated Amazon’s corporate greed‚ its worker exploitation and the power of the richest man in the world. Instead‚ hundreds of thousands of undocumented‚ unemployed migrants have collected in New York City‚ exploited by Democrats who have no more plans to feed or provide for them than they do for the working-class families being displaced and economically decimated by foolish economic initiatives. This pattern of economic destruction reflects the Marxist ideological policy of deconstruction — tearing down the economy‚ schools‚ families‚ and everything else that is decent to implement the farcically imagined utopia that will guarantee that “everyone has everything” while doing (and owning) nothing.  America’s three largest cities are witnessing a massive exodus of businesses‚ investments‚ taxpayers‚ and tax receipts as a direct consequence of reckless policies of overt economic and social sabotage. The instigators of this economic destruction are unrepentant in their shameless disconnect from the working class they claim they are liberating.  How much worse can it get? James Carville‚ Religion Deserves a Place at the Table

Good ole boy James Carville took the spotlight last week to let loose what just might be the main Democrat talking points of the campaign. It’s a fight against Christian nationalists‚ he said‚ ready to install a theocratic dictatorship. I had heard rumblings of this sort from my liberal and radical acquaintances. “He’s seeking revenge and he’s going to be a dictator‚” says one; another one calls him “the Savior figure of the right.” They all invoke the specter of not just an Elmer Gantryism but a new Puritan dictatorship or Spanish Inquisition (wait — nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!). The appeal to my love of democracy (democracy itself is threatened!) and of the crucial First Amendment freedom of religion. Most think that should be especially appealing as a member of a decidedly minority religion. READ MORE from Shmuel Klatzkin: Has the Radical Left Finally Hit a Wall? I tell them I am with them in supporting the First Amendment. But the religion that it forbids our government to establish is not just Christianity or‚ as in the practical issue confronting the framers‚ one particular Christian denomination. Rather‚ that amendment‚ by mentioning no particular religion‚ includes them all. And that includes the messy‚ inconsistent‚ everchanging‚ unprovable points of belief of those who choose to construct their own belief set rather than subscribe to a traditional faith. For it is the nature of this world that we all must act on the basis of things that have not been proven. This is so in the most particular and practical sense — I do not have a deep working knowledge of the laws of aerodynamics‚ yet I still fly on commercial airliners. And someone who does have such knowledge has probably not verified that every system that allows the plane to fly safely has been checked. If we only depended on things we verify completely and meticulously‚ we could do very few things. This also applies on the largest and most universal scale. “How does one prove that reality exists?” asked a friend of mine who taught relativity physics in universities and applied his knowledge working for the government. Yet all the work of science depends on reality‚ well‚ being real. As Rabbi Robert Zimmerman once put it‚ “You’re going to serve somebody.” What the Democrat talking point ignores‚ as they have done consistently‚ is that they have what is meant by religion as well‚ putting faith in all sorts of unproved doctrines that they then seek to enforce with the comprehensive ruthlessness of an Inquisitor. Ask the cake baker in Denver. Ask the victims of bodily mutilation who face a life of a eunuch. Ask those who were expelled from the military because of their concerns about mRNA vaccines. Ask the parents of suicides‚ the beaten wives‚ the kids who lost a year or more of schooling due to the draconian lockdowns. Ask those who suffered from the pitchforked mobs of true believers who set out vigilante style to enforce the new dictates of the new faith. It is the Judeo-Christian tradition of the West that cited biblical and rabbinic sources to justify and inspire the move toward political freedom. Read Eric Nelson‚ who still represents the greatest traditions of academia at Harvard‚ where those traditions have been so conspicuously absent of late. Read his great work The Hebrew Republic. Follow the path he traces to undo the fallacious dogma‚ still taken as absolute truth by so many of my left-leaning friends‚ that the path to democracy lay in the renunciation of Christianity and Judaism. (RELATED: Backlash Against Harvard’s Claudine Gay Is Indictment of ‘Diversity‚ Equity‚ and Inclusion’) Then enter the fray and argue‚ not against the Left’s right to fight for policies it believes in but against its dishonest presentation of itself as having the sole right to enact its faith as binding on us all‚ claiming falsely that only we are disqualified from enforcing faith by law. Carville has always brought a smile‚ and he was pretty adept to keep the forces of #MeToo at bay while he derided one of the many women Clinton used and discarded‚ calling her what you find when you troll through a trailer park with a $10 bill. He is now trying to project the intolerance of the new religions of the Left onto those who have made their choice in old traditions that have learned lessons through the centuries and eventually joined in support of religious freedom as a religious principle. He and those who follow his lead seek to monopolize religious intolerance by using the Constitution to suppress traditional religion as political force and to reserve the deep power of faith to be used by his allied believers alone. It is a position that deserves the most minimal respect‚ if any. It deserves the steady and true criticism that it receives when it seeks to undermine the First Amendment by deceptively and falsely claiming that its beliefs alone deserve to be supported and enforced by the government. Making Sure Fear Strikes Out

As I survey the few friends I have left as I enter into old age‚ I see some who are in misery and some who are in pretty good shape psychologically and emotionally. There are many differences between them‚ and the ones who are scared and suffering from the terrible disease of terror about financial insecurity. READ MORE from Ben Stein: My Life at 79 The main thing is that the ones who are happier have more money. That seems like an obvious point‚ and it is. But please note that I am not talking about people my age (79) who have tons of money and comparing them with the homeless. I am talking about “ordinary people” who are not buying Bentleys‚ but who are not in dreadful fear when their mail comes in. The usual difference I notice is that the ones who are not deathly afraid of their bills have some required sense of order. They were taught at an early age to budget such that they would not live in fear about money. Just for a small example‚ I have a sister and a brother-in-law who have a super sensible attitude about money. My brother-in-law was a madly successful Wall Street lawyer. I have no idea how much he earned per annum‚ but it was most probably in the highest stratum of earnings. He and my sister live intelligently. I‚ raised by the same parents‚ likely earned even more in my good years. But as the fad for Ben Stein evaporated‚ my earnings diminished. Luckily‚ thanks to good parents and a fabulous friend named Warren Buffett and another fabulous friend named Phil DeMuth‚ I had some decent investments such that I was always very far from broke. But I did have some terrible days of fear because much of my savings were in the form of real estate. It’s fun to own and to enjoy. But converting it to cash that can be used to pay bills is far from a frictionless process. When you finally get the check‚ you are a happy guy. But it would have been better to have cash in the first place. Now‚ I will have a great‚ great deal more to say on this as I enter farther into old age. But what I really want to say is that some measure of orderliness is an extremely important part of a happy life. I‚ your humble servant‚ am some considerable distance from being poor. But my life would have been happier if I had more cash and fewer illiquid assets. I should have begun converting my real estate into cash much sooner than I did. The miracle (yes‚ miracle) of stocks and the stock market is that you can convert them into cash at any time with one phone call. There are downsides‚ especially as regards taxation‚ but the upside in terms of peace of mind when converting them into the stuff you can pay your Mastercard with is fantastic. Congress Will Need a New Idea in 2024. Will It Choose a Good One?

With U.S. government revenues rising‚ 2023 might have been a good year for Congress to get America’s post-COVID-19 finances on track‚ but the budget deficit is still growing. You can thank overspending for this. It’s also the reason we’ve had to live with inflation‚ higher interest rates‚ and the threat of massive future tax hikes for another year. READ MORE from Veronique de Rugy: What Should Happen When Fuel-Efficient Vehicles Take Over the Roads That sets up 2024 as the time when Congress might abandon a dangerous idea that helped get us here. I hope they find a better idea to replace it. The Congressional Budget Office’s latest Monthly Budget Review for November reveals the alarming trend: Despite a 19 percent increase in revenues‚ amounting to $107 billion‚ the federal budget deficit has swelled to $383 billion — $47 billion more than the same period in the previous fiscal year. This surge is attributed to expenditures outpacing revenues by $155 billion. Blame for this mess of fiscal irresponsibility falls overwhelmingly on Congress and the executive branch. Of course‚ there were the excesses of the COVID-19 era‚ but the problem started long before 2020. Constant increases in spending on everything and anything without fully paying have made America’s debt the size of its entire economy. According to CBO‚ that’s just the beginning. Assuming interest rates don’t go up much more and inflation is mostly in our rearview mirror‚ the debt will almost double in the next 30 years. There are reasons to assume that even these daunting projections are rosy. In recent months‚ the escalating cost of government interest payments has been primary fuel for the growing deficits. In the first two months of fiscal year 2024‚ these payments have soared by 65 percent compared to the same period the previous year. This latest development is particularly concerning when viewed in the context of our debt-to-GDP ratio. The interest payments amount to 3 percent of America’s GDP‚ a level not seen since the early 1990s. The difference is that 30 years ago‚ the U.S. was at the end of a large battle against the inflation of the 1970s and ’80s. That episode left interest rates higher for many years after the crisis was averted. Unfortunately‚ we are only at the beginning of our struggle‚ and it could be several years before interest rates significantly fall. If history is our guide‚ interest payments are going to continue consuming a large share of our budget and GDP for quite a while. The strain will mean more debt than currently projected. Economists share some of the blame because‚ in the years leading to the COVID-19 emergency‚ they provided Congress with arguments as to why a growing national debt is sustainable. Some spoke of unrestrained modern monetary theory or trillion-dollar coins. Congress mainly chose to believe that if interest rates remained low‚ the cost of spending money you didn’t have was zero. Not surprisingly‚ proponents of this theory were also fast to forecast that rates would stay remarkably low. As you can imagine‚ this is catnip for politicians who want nothing more than to spend without restraint. The main problem should be obvious. It’s true that when interest rates are low‚ the cost of servicing the debt is relatively low and manageable. But the situation changes quickly when interest rates start to rise‚ especially when applied to enormous debt. Risk is amplified by the relatively short-term nature of much of our debt. We’re learning this painful lesson now. With the low-interest-rate theory now losing appeal‚ many economists are likely to pivot toward new and superficially comforting metrics‚ and politicians will believe them. Congress and the president’s refusal to take our fiscal troubles seriously suggests that more inflation might become the tool that eventually chips the debt away. Economists at the International Monetary Fund have found that sudden bursts of inflation are a common debt-reduction method historically employed by governments worldwide. If so‚ your contribution might someday be paying $10 for a gallon of milk. It doesn’t have to be this way. After World War II‚ the U.S. government successfully lowered its debt-to-GDP level from 86 percent in 1950 to 23.2 percent in 1974. Inflation was part of the equation‚ but the most important factor was plain old austerity — living within our means. The absence of serious conversation speaks volumes. It’s very likely that a large number of Republicans and Democrats want to let inflation take care of the debt.
