A person of interest was taken into custody in connection to the fatal stabbing of Detroit synagogue leader Samantha Woll in October‚ police said on Sunday‚ the second such arrest in just over a month. “DPD can confirm that a person of interest has been taken into custody in furtherance of the investigation into the murder of Samantha Woll‚” Detroit police said in a statement‚ according to CBS News. “In an effort to ensure the integrity of this ongoing investigation‚ no further details will be released at this time. Additional information will be released in the near future‚” police added. Woll‚ the 40-year-old president of Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue‚ was found stabbed outside her home on the morning of October 21 and pronounced dead at the scene‚ according to authorities. As reported by the Detroit Free Press‚ police said Woll attended a wedding the night before she was slain‚ and there were no signs of forced entry at her home. Authorities also shared how officers observed a “trail of blood leading officers to the victim’s residence” in the Lafayette Park neighborhood where they believed the crime took place. The Free Press reported at the time that the suspect was released without being charged. A reward of $15‚000 for information leading to an arrest was offered soon after. Woll was killed at a time of increased concerns for the safety of Jewish people in the United States and abroad as Israel went to war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip after the group launched terrorist attacks on Israeli soil on October 7. In an update shortly after Woll was found fatally stabbed‚ Detroit Police Chief James White said no evidence had “surfaced suggesting that this crime was motivated by antisemitism.” Woll‚ who became a leader of the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue in 2022‚ had done work for high-powered Democrat officials from Michigan over the years and advocated for Jewish-Muslim solidarity. Her funeral reportedly drew hundreds of people from different faiths‚ races‚ and nationalities. A teenage shoplifter involved in the stabbing death of a Los Angeles shop owner was sentenced to five years in a secure juvenile facility last week after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter. The shoplifter and another teen were initially charged with murder and second-degree robbery‚ Fox News reported‚ and it is unclear why the charges were reduced. California’s Proposition 21 states that minors accused of murder‚ certain sex crimes‚ and other violent crimes should be automatically tried as adults‚ yet these two teens weren’t. And because they’re minors‚ their names aren’t being released. On October 1‚ 2022‚ a boyfriend and girlfriend entered a wig shop in L.A.’s Fashion District and walked out with a wig. The store owner‚ Korean immigrant Du Young “Tommy” Lee‚ chased the teens as they left the store and confronted them. The store’s landlord told Fox 11 that Lee and the teens had an altercation‚ during which one of them pulled out a knife and stabbed the shop owner‚ who had been a fixture in L.A. for nearly 20 years. “They were looking at a wig. And then all of a sudden they made a run for it. Tommy had a record of being tough and going after robbers‚” the landlord said at the time of the incident after reviewing surveillance footage. “He started chasing them around shopping center and then the boy pulled out a knife and shanked him right in the heart.” “I don’t think [Lee] ever imagined he would be murdered over a wig‚” the landlord added. County District Attorney George Gascón condemned their actions. “Mr. Lee was killed in the middle of the day on a busy street in downtown L.A. while simply trying to run his business‚” Gascón said in a press release at the time. “His death is a tremendous loss for his friends‚ family and all who knew him. I want to make it clear that my office will work diligently to hold accountable individuals who engage in violent acts – even if they are minors.” Yet one of the teens was allowed to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter as a juvenile‚ which carries a maximum penalty of five years in a secure youth treatment facility‚ ABC 7 reported. The teens were 17 at the time of the crime. Some saw Lee as a hero for standing up to shoplifters over the years‚ often receiving injuries for his efforts but refusing to back down. The second teen involved in the stabbing will appear in court within the next two weeks‚ ABC reported.

A New Hampshire man has been arrested for threatening to “blow” the “brains out” of a presidential candidate‚ according to the Justice Department.  The DOJ announced Monday morning that a 30-year-old man had been charged over a text message that threatened a candidate and attendees of a campaign event. The DOJ did not identify which candidate had been threatened‚ but the campaign of Republican tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy reportedly confirmed that he was the target of the threat.  On December 8‚ in response to a text message about an event in Portsmouth‚ New Hampshire‚ the suspect allegedly replied‚ “Great‚ another opportunity for me to blow his brains out!” and “I’m going to kill everyone who attends and then f*** their corpses.” According to the DOJ‚ the text message was sent in response to an invitation for a campaign event on December 11. Ramaswamy was the only candidate with a public event listed in Portsmouth that day and his campaign told the New Hampshire Journal that they were the targets of the threat.  “We are grateful to law enforcement for their swiftness and professionalism in handling this matter and pray for the safety of all Americans‚” campaign spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin told the outlet.  Ramaswamy’s campaign had scheduled a “Breakfast with Vivek” event at the Roundabout Dinner in Portsmouth‚ the NHJournal reported.  CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP The suspect will appear in federal court in Concord on Monday for an initial hearing. According to the DOJ‚ he could face up to five years in prison‚ up to three years of supervised release‚ and a fine of up to $250‚000 if convicted. Court documents also allege that he had sent threatening messages to a different candidate last week‚ saying he wanted to “blow that b******’s head off‚” NBC Boston reported.  Another message said‚ “Thanks‚ I’ll see you there. Hope you have the stamina for a mass shooting!” On Monday morning‚ Ramaswamy announced a series of events throughout New Hampshire‚ including in the cities of Portsmouth‚ Nashua‚ and Manchester.

A Mississippi woman whose son disappeared more than a year ago only recently learned that he had never been missing and that authorities had found him quickly and buried him. On May 20‚ 2022‚ Jonathan David Hankins hugged and kissed his mother‚ Gretchen‚ goodbye before saying he was leaving for a weekend trip with his friends. Jonathan‚ a meth addict‚ promised to come home for Sunday dinner and was known to leave for several days at a time‚ barred from entering the home while using the stimulant. But Gretchen‚ along with Jonathan’s teenage daughter‚ became concerned that something had gone wrong‚ NBC News reported. Gretchen reported her son missing to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office nearly two months later‚ on July 14. A search was announced on Facebook two weeks later‚ and the case was shared with local media outlets. Volunteers searched for him in the surrounding waterways but came up empty. For more than a year‚ Gretchen contacted the sheriff’s office every few weeks asking for information about her son but was always told they had nothing new to report. The outlet combed through a register of recent burials‚ compared it to a list of missing people‚ and found Jonathan’s name‚ along with others‚ on both lists. After confirming that it was‚ indeed‚ Gretchen’s son‚ the outlet visited her at her home on December 4 and shared the tragic news‚ along with what they had learned. According to NBC‚ Jonathan had been found dead in a hotel room near Jackson‚ Mississippi‚ just three days after he said goodbye to Gretchen. NBC didn’t report the cause of death. Investigators verified his identity but neither the Hinds County Coroner’s office nor the Jackson Police Department informed his family. He was buried in a grave marked with the number 645. “It feels like they threw him away like trash‚” Jonathan’s aunt‚ Jennie Jones‚ told the outlet. “No caring. No feeling.” The Hinds County coroner’s office failed to notify families in two other cases‚ and the Jackson Police Department adopted new protocols for notifications last month. JPD spokeswoman Melissa Faith Payne told the outlet that it was the coroner’s responsibility to contact Gretchen. “From the scene‚ the victim’s body was immediately turned over to the Hinds County Coroner’s office for further investigation‚ including an autopsy‚” she told the outlet in a statement. “To this day‚ the Jackson Police Department has had no further communication with the Hinds County Coroner’s office concerning this case. We were never notified of the victim’s cause of death or identity.”

Jada Pinkett Smith referred to her husband Will Smith hitting Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards in 2022 as a “holy slap‚” saying it had some positive results. Hackers affiliated with China’s military have reportedly tapped into dozens of critical U.S. systems over the past year to test its capacity to create chaos in American life‚ according to U.S. and security industry officials. The hacks appeared to be made with an intention toward some future action rather than disrupting systems in the moment and suggest that the People’s Liberation Army of China is testing its and the United States’ capabilities in case hostilities break out over Taiwan‚ experts told The Washington Post. One of the agencies responsible for monitoring and combating foreign cyber threats is the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) at the Department of Homeland Security. “It is very clear that Chinese attempts to compromise critical infrastructure are in part to pre-position themselves to be able to disrupt or destroy that critical infrastructure in the event of a conflict‚ to either prevent the United States from being able to project power into Asia or to cause societal chaos inside the United States — to affect our decision-making around a crisis‚” CISA executive director Brandon Wales told the Post. “That is a significant change from Chinese cyber activity from seven to 10 years ago that was focused primarily on political and economic espionage.” The cyber attacks hit various targets‚ including a water utility in Hawaii and at least one oil and gas pipeline. Hackers also attempted to break into Texas’ independent power grid. None of the attacks caused a significant disruption‚ and the hackers appeared to prioritize creating pathways into the systems that could be used again at a later date. Until then you lie in wait‚ carry out reconnaissance‚ figure out if you can move into industrial control systems or more critical companies or targets upstream. And one day‚ if you get the order from on high‚ you switch from reconnaissance to attack‚” Joe McReynolds‚ a China security studies fellow at the Jamestown Foundation‚ told the Post. The jump in aggressive cyber activity out of China comes when U.S.-China relations are more tense than in previous decades. Tensions have risen recently over China’s aggressive posturing and actions in the Indo-Pacific region‚ including threatening to take over Taiwan. The Biden administration has officially maintained a position of “strategic ambiguity” on Taiwan‚ neither committing nor declining to come to Taiwan’s aid in the event of an attack from China. In February‚ the U.S. shot down a Chinese spy balloon after it traversed the continental United States. China claimed that the balloon was an unmanned civilian airship used for meteorological study that blew off course. Another spy balloon appeared over Taiwan last week‚ according to the Taiwanese defense ministry. The appearance of the new spy balloon comes months after U.S. intelligence officials reportedly believed that China had suspended its spy balloon program over the incident with the U.S. President Joe Biden has recently attempted to cool tensions by meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a summit in San Francisco last month. Biden pressed Xi on reopening military channels between the U.S. and China and cracking down on the fentanyl precursor industry in China that fuels the Mexican drug trade.
