Our Homo Sapiens Ancestors Shared The World With Neanderthals‚ Denisovans And Other Types Of Humans Whose DNA Lives On In Our Genes

When the first modern humans arose in East Africa sometime between 200‚000 and 300‚000 years ago‚ the world was very different compared to today. Perhaps the biggest difference was that we – meaning people of our species‚ Homo sapiens – were only one of several types of humans (or hominins) that simultaneously existed on Earth. From the well-known Neanderthals and more enigmatic Denisovans in Eurasia‚ to the diminutive “hobbit” Homo floresiensis on the island of Flores in Indonesia‚ to Homo naledi that lived in South Africa‚ multiple hominins abounded. Then‚ between 30‚000 and 40‚000 years ago‚ all but one type of these hominins disappeared‚ and for the first time we were alone.Until recently‚ one of the mysteries about human history was whether our ancestors interacted and mated with these other types of humans before they went extinct. This fascinating question was the subject of great and often contentious debates among scientists for decades‚ because the data needed to answer this question simply didn’t exist. In fact‚ it seemed to many that the data would never exist.Svante Pääbo‚ however‚ paid little attention to what people thought was or was not possible. His persistence in developing tools to extract‚ sequence and interpret ancient DNA enabled sequencing the genomes of Neanderthals‚ Denisovans and early modern humans who lived over 45‚000 years ago.For developing this new field of paleogenomics‚ Pääbo was awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. This honor is not only well-deserved recognition for Pääbo’s triumphs‚ but also for evolutionary genomics and the insights it can contribute toward a more comprehensive understanding of human health and disease.Mixing and mating‚ revealed by DNAGenetic studies of living people over the past several decades revealed the general contours of human history. Our species arose in Africa‚ dispersing out from that continent around 60‚000 years ago‚ ultimately spreading to nearly all habitable places on Earth. Other types of humans existed as modern humans migrated throughout the world‚ but the genetic data showed little evidence that modern humans mated with other hominins.Over the past decade‚ however‚ the study of ancient DNA‚ recovered from fossils up to around 400‚000 years old‚ has revealed startling new twists and turns in the story of human history. For example‚ the Neanderthal genome provided the data necessary to definitively show that humans and Neanderthals mated. Non-African people alive today inherited about 2% of their genomes from Neanderthal ancestors‚ thanks to this kind of interbreeding. In one of the biggest surprises‚ when Pääbo and his colleagues sequenced ancient DNA obtained from a small finger bone fragment that was assumed to be Neanderthal‚ it turned out to be an entirely unknown type of human‚ now called Denisovans. Humans and Denisovans also mated‚ with the highest levels of Denisovan ancestry present today – between 4% and 6% – in individuals of Oceanic ancestry.Strikingly‚ ancient DNA from a 90‚000-year-old female revealed that she had a Neanderthal mother and a Denisovan father. Although there are still many unanswered questions‚ the picture emerging from analyses of ancient and modern DNA is that not only did multiple hominins overlap in time and space‚ but that matings were relatively common.Archaic genes you carry todayEstimating the proportion of ancestry that modern individuals have from Neanderthals or Denisovans is certainly interesting. But ancestry proportions provide limited information about the consequences of these ancient matings. For instance‚ does DNA inherited from Neanderthals and Denisovans influence biological functions that occur within our cells? Does this DNA influence traits like eye color or susceptibility to disease? Were DNA sequences from our evolutionary cousins ever beneficial‚ helping humans adapt to new environments? To answer these questions‚ we need to identify the bits of Neanderthal and Denisovan DNA scattered throughout the genomes of modern individuals. In 2014‚ my group and David Reich’s group independently published the first maps of Neanderthal sequences that survive in the DNA of modern humans. Today‚ roughly 40% of the Neanderthal genome has been recovered not by sequencing ancient DNA recovered from a fossil‚ but indirectly by piecing together the Neanderthal sequences that persist in the genomes of contemporary individuals.Similarly‚ in 2016 my group and David Reich’s group published the first comprehensive catalogs of DNA sequences in modern individuals inherited from Denisovan ancestors. Surprisingly‚ when we analyzed the Denisovan sequences that persist in people today‚ we discovered they came from two distinct Denisovan populations‚ and therefore at least two separate waves of matings occurred between Denisovans and modern humans. The analysis of Neanderthal and Denisovan DNA in modern humans reveals that some of their sequence was harmful and rapidly got purged from human genomes. In fact‚ the initial fraction of Neanderthal ancestry in humans who lived approximately 45‚000 years ago was around 10%. That amount rapidly declined over a small number of generations to the 2% observed in contemporary individuals. The removal of deleterious archaic sequences also created large regions of the human genome that are significantly depleted of both Neanderthal and Denisovan ancestry. These deserts of archaic hominin sequences are interesting because they may help identify genetic changes that contribute to uniquely modern human traits‚ such as our capacity for language‚ symbolic thought and culture‚ although there is debate about just how unique these traits are to modern humans. In contrast‚ there are also sequences inherited from Neanderthals and Denisovans that were advantageous‚ and helped modern humans adapt to new environments as they dispersed out of Africa. Neanderthal versions of several immune-related genes have risen to high frequency in several non-African populations‚ which likely helped humans fend off exposure to new pathogens. Similarly‚ a version of the EPAS1 gene‚ which contributes to high-altitude adaptation in Tibetan populations‚ was inherited from Denisovans. It is also becoming clear that DNA sequences inherited from Neanderthal and Denisovan ancestors contribute to the burden of disease in present day individuals. Neanderthal sequences have been shown to influence both susceptibility to and protection against severe COVID-19. Archaic hominin sequences have also been shown to influence susceptibility to depression‚ Type 2 diabetes and celiac disease among others. Ongoing studies will undoubtedly reveal more about how Neanderthal and Denisovan ancestry contributes to human disease.I was a graduate student when the Human Genome Project was nearing completion a little over two decades ago. I was drawn to genetics because I found it fascinating that‚ by analyzing the DNA of present-day individuals‚ you could learn aspects about a population’s history that occurred tens of thousands of years ago.Today‚ I am just as fascinated by the stories contained in our DNA‚ and the work of Svante Pääbo and his colleagues has enabled these stories to be told in a way that simply was not possible before.Joshua Akey‚ Professor at the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics‚ Princeton UniversityThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Elon Musk reactivates X account of Alex Jones‚ InfoWars host shares Andrew Tate post telling 'globalists to get f***ed'

Elon Musk reinstated the X social media account of Alex Jones early Sunday. Jones had been banned for five years from the social media platform previously known as Twitter. Musk asked on Saturday: "Reinstate Alex Jones on this platform? Vox Populi‚ Vox Dei.""Vox Populi‚ Vox Dei" is a Latin phrase meaning "the voice of the people is the voice of God."With nearly 2 million votes‚ more than 70% overwhelmingly declared that Jones should have his X account reinstated. "The people have spoken and so it shall be‚" Musk tweeted after the poll ended. — (@) Speaking on concerns regarding Jones spreading misinformation‚ Musk declared‚ "It is a safe bet that Community Notes will respond rapidly to any AJ post that needs correction."Early Sunday morning‚ Jones made his first action on his reactivated X account by reposting controversial influencer Andrew Tate. Jones retweeted a post from Tate that read: "To show respect to Alex Jones for his triumphant return and to show respect to Elon being a hero – tell a globalist to get f***ed today."InfoWars noted‚ "Expect a post soon from Alex on @RealAlexJones."Jones was banned from Twitter in 2018 for violating the company’s "abusive behavior policy" by the social media company's prior management. Musk previously hinted that he would not reinstate Jones because Jones falsely claimed on his InfoWars show that the Sandy Hook mass shooting was a hoax.In November 2022‚ Megaupload founder and former CEO Kim Dotcom urged Musk to reinstate Jones in a Twitter post. Kim Dotcom conceded that Jones "f***ed up with Sandy Hook‚" but that the InfoWars host apologized and "got a lot of 'conspiracy theories' right." Kim Dotcom argued‚ "If serial liars like Biden and Trump are allowed on Twitter then Alex Jones should be allowed too."Musk responded‚ "My firstborn child died in my arms. I felt his last heartbeat. I have no mercy for anyone who would use the deaths of children for gain‚ politics or fame."Jones filed for bankruptcy in December after a judge ordered him to pay $1.5 billion to the families of the victims of the 2012 shooting that killed 20 children and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown‚ Connecticut. It appears that the official InfoWars X account is still suspended since being banned in 2018. Musk also used an X poll in November to decide to reactivate the social media account of former President Donald Trump. The Tesla CEO also reactivated the suspended accounts of Kanye West and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors‚ sign up for our newsletters‚ and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!

MS teacher planned to take student across state lines to elope‚ charged with felony sexual battery: Report

A former teacher in Ocean Springs‚ Mississippi‚ who has been accused of having sexual relations with a student‚ was granted bond. Then‚ a disturbing detail was revealed. Jackson County Sheriff Captain Kristen Johnson testified‚ saying "[h]e (James Donald Hawkins II) said that they had made plans to go to Louisiana to elope‚ and things were moving faster than they originally expected‚" according to WLOX.During her testimony‚ Jackson said Hawkins‚ 38‚ had sex with the 17-year-old victim at his home and in the parking lot of the Walmart in Ocean Springs. Hawkins‚ who previously taught physics at a high school in the Ocean Springs school district‚ was arrested on November 30 and charged with felony sexual battery. The authorities stated that the investigation is still ongoing and that more charges could be on the way.The New York Post reported Johnson said "[t]he victim said that it began in the springtime of 2023 before the last school year ended‚" adding that "[a]ccording to Mr. Hawkins‚ he admitted they had sex approximately one time a month‚ including at his house and in her car."The home that Hawkins apparently had the sexual encounter in was the same house that he shared with his wife and their toddler‚ according to the Sun Herald.Hawkins' bond was apparently set for $150‚000‚ and the judge went on to say that he needed to stay away from the student and her family.School officials released a statement‚ saying that the accusations made against the former teacher were "disturbing and intolerable."“OSSD is deeply troubled by the arrest and charges announced today by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department involving one of our teachers‚” the school district said.“James Hawkins was terminated from OSSD when district officials were informed of his arrest and subsequent charges by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department this evening.”Hawkins had been teaching at Ocean Springs High School for over a year. Before the high school job‚ he worked in physics as a graduate student at Mississippi State University‚ according to LinkedIn. His profile mentioned that he completed his bachelor's degree at Mississippi State between 2005 and 2019. Following completion of the degree‚ he reportedly worked as a professors' assistant and physics lab graduate teaching assistant. Hawkins' lawyer‚ Cameron McCormick‚ and the school district did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment. However‚ the school district confirmed to local news outlets that Hawkins had been terminated following the revelation.Like Blaze News? I can’t wait to buy these 5 Apple products in 2024

With 2023 wrapping up‚ I'm already excited about all the products Apple is planning to launch in 2024. Fortunately‚ we already know many future gadgets the company should release next year. With that in mind‚ I'm already preparing myself for the amount of money I might have to spend to try the latest and greatest technologies from the Cupertino company. Below are the 5 Apple products I can't wait to buy in 2024. Apple Vision Pro A Vision Pro user running multiple apps side-by-side. Image source: Apple Inc. First things first: I can't wait for Apple Vision Pro to launch. I know it's going to be very tough (and expensive) to get one. I'm still working on the logistics to get this mixed reality headset in Brazil – but I just know it will be worth it. At first‚ I thought about waiting for a second generation‚ but rumors so far say it's going to take so long for it to happen that I can't miss up to three years of Apple's advancements in spatial computing to try this gadget. It might not be as big as the iPhone was back in the day‚ but I'm sure this product will help shape Apple's future. And it's just around the corner. OLED iPad Pro Apple iPad Pro. Image source: Christian de Looper for BGR To this day‚ I still own a second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a Smart Folio Keyboard. It's a great product‚ and it's impressive that it has been updated to iPadOS 17‚ but I'm missing so many experiences from the M-series models. Although miniLED technology seems better than OLED‚ what I'm excited the most about this launch is the revamped Magic Keyboard‚ rumored to make this tablet more of a laptop‚ and the new Apple Pencil 3. Count me in if Apple can solve the draining battery issues from both accessories while making the iPad lighter. Of course‚ I'm in the game for the 13-inch option. iPad Pro 2024: Release date‚ price‚ specs‚ &; everything we know AirPods 4 Apple's AirPods 3 in the charging case. Image source: Christian de Looper for BGR Apple released AirPods 3 in October 2022; an update could come in 2024. Although I love my third-generation AirPods‚ I will surely buy the newest models. Not only might they come with the H2 chip and improved battery life‚ but it's possible that they could add hearing-aid-like features‚ such as Conversation Boost and Live Listen. Bloomberg reports that Apple is aiming at the hearing aid market with AirPods. In addition‚ a change to USB-C would make my life easier now that Apple is transitioning most of its products to this new port. Proper Find My feature with a UWB chip would also be a must-have feature. AirPods Max 2 Image source: José Adorno for BGR It's been two years since I first bought AirPods Max. Although I love these headphones‚ I can't wait for a second generation. Recently‚ Mark Gurman said Apple might launch new models by late 2023. The journalist believes we'll get new colors and USB-C‚ but other features aren't expected at the moment. Since people complained about the first model‚ these new headphones should feature the new H2 processor‚ Bluetooth 5.3 support‚ the find precision chip‚ USB-C port‚ and a better smart case. But if what Gurman is reporting is accurate‚ we might not get any of that. Let's hope that this changes from now until the release. AirPods Max 2 and new Apple AirPods: Here's when to expect them iPhone 16 Pro Max iPhone 15 Pro Max Back on table Image source: Christian de Looper for BGR OK. I'll stop here. But upgrading my iPhone early is already a tradition. It's not that I'm super excited about this release‚ but the possibility of better cameras‚ better battery life‚ and possibly generative AI features... how can I say no? Fortunately‚ we already got several rumors about the 2024 lineup. iPhone 16: Everything we know so far Wrap up I'm sure 2024 will be a packed year for Apple‚ with many products to update. I'm not even considering any new Macs‚ as I'm currently rocking an M2 Max Mac Studio and an M1 Pro MacBook Pro. Still‚ I'm sure the new MacBook Air‚ Mac mini‚ and Mac Studio will be solid updates for those looking for graphic improvements. Next year also marks the tenth anniversary of the Apple Watch. Imagine what Apple is holding for this device. One thing is for sure: I might need a raise to keep up with the latest techs. Which Apple product are you looking forward to buying the most? Send me a message at jose@bgr.com.
