Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL)‚ fresh off delivering the GOP response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address‚ spoke on Tuesday about what Congress should do to address the controversial issue of men competing in women’s sports. She hinted there could be progress on that front — with a GOP majority in the upper chamber next year. The remarks came as part of a Capitol Hill discussion on Title IX hosted by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL)‚ a former Auburn football coach. Among its featured speakers were former ESPN anchor Sage Steele and Paula Scanlan‚ a former NCAA swimmer who competed against trans-identifying athlete Lia Thomas. Mullins went on to ask‚ “What can Congress do to put the responsibility on the schools to protect them?” She directed the question directly to Britt‚ who has a school-aged daughter and son. Britt said the experiences of the younger Mullins underscores how adults‚ including parents‚ need to demand conversations and support young athletes. As for what lawmakers are doing‚ Britt said they are working “diligently” to give female competitors the best chance for success. She noted some of the work of Tuberville pushing the Biden administration to push back on proposed regulations to prohibit schools from enforcing blanket bans on trans-identifying males in girls sports and Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) taking up the fight for a “Women’s Bill of Rights.” Making a hopeful prediction for Republicans in November’s election‚ Britt said‚ “When we take back the Senate next year‚ I have a feeling that we’ll be able to move some of this forward.” The Senate is currently led by Democrats who have 48 seats and three independents who caucus with them. Even if Republicans win a majority‚ Tuberville cautioned that progress is no guarantee. “We have an election this year and hopefully we take the Senate‚” Tuberville said. “In the Senate‚ you still have to get 60 votes (to bypass a filibuster). We won’t have 60‚ and so we’re going to have to plead to our cohorts on the Left to make a common sense decision to save women’s sports.” Lummis chimed in to say that she believes Democrats will join with Republicans on the issue “because they know it’s wrong.” Hyde-Smith insisted that lawmakers will use their “microphone” and “platform.” She added‚ “Elections matter. We have got to empower people to get out‚ vote‚ and change this.”

A former Boeing employee who raised safety concerns related to the company’s aircraft production was found dead this week. Former Boeing quality manager John Barnett‚ who The New York Times described as a “prominent” whistleblower‚ was in Charleston‚ South Carolina‚ this week for a deposition for a lawsuit that he filed against Boeing. The lawsuit alleges that the company retaliated against Barnett for raising his safety concerns with the U.S. Labor Department in 2017 under the AIR21 Whistleblower Protection Program. The Charleston Police Department was dispatched on Saturday morning to conduct a welfare check at a Holiday Inn hotel and discovered Barnett‚ 62‚ sitting inside a vehicle with a “gunshot wound to the head‚” police said. Police said that it appeared as though the fatal gunshot wound was “self-inflicted‚” but added that the detectives and the coroner were still investigating to make an official determination about his cause of death. “We understand the global attention this case has garnered‚ and it is our priority to ensure that the investigation is not influenced by speculation but is led by facts and evidence‚” the department added. “Given the sensitive nature of the investigation‚ we are unable to participate in media interviews at this time. This stance is not unique to this case but is a standard procedure we adhere to in order to preserve the integrity of active investigations. Public disclosure will follow the investigation’s conclusion.” Boeing responded to his death by saying in a statement‚ “We are saddened by Mr. Barnett’s passing‚ and our thoughts are with his family and friends.” Barnett had warned that at Boeing’s South Carolina plant‚ clusters of metal shavings had been left inside the plane hanging over wiring that commands the plane’s flight controls‚ The New York Times reported in 2019. He warned that if the metal shavings penetrated the wires‚ the results could be catastrophic. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) used up his time during a Tuesday hearing on Capitol Hill to lay out a case against former President Donald Trump — and then appeared to get frustrated when the witness‚ Special Counsel Robert Hur‚ refused to help him do it. Hur testified Tuesday on his investigation into President Joe Biden and his handling of the classified documents that were found in his possession — but instead of asking him about that‚ Swalwell behaved as though it was another Trump impeachment hearing and asked Hur to condemn the former president. It’s a story that the guy who appointed you would end if he was put in charge again‚” Swalwell said‚ making no distinction between legal and illegal immigration‚ and adding that Republicans across the board were behind Trump on that issue. Swalwell pivoted again‚ asking Hur whether he wanted his report on the Biden investigation “to be received with credibility” — and then immediately implied that in order for his report to be credible‚ Hur would have to disavow Trump. “Since you were appointed‚ he was impeached for leveraging 350 U.S. — $350 million U.S. taxpayer dollars over Ukraine to get dirt on President Biden‚” Swalwell said. “He was then impeached a second time for inciting an insurrection. He was charged for possessing classified documents and obstructing justice. He was charged for paying for the silence of a porn star. He was charged in Georgia for his role in January 6th. He was charged in the District of Columbia for his role in January 6th. He owes $400 million to the state of New York for defrauding the state through his taxes. Swalwell tried one more time to get a condemnation from Hur: “You don’t want to be associated with that guy again‚ do you?” Hur refused to budge from his initial position: “I’m not here to talk about Trump; I’m here to talk about this report‚ which investigated Biden.”

The Voice released a clip ahead of tonight’s final blind audition episode‚ and it shows one of the most powerful and “flawless” performances of the season.  The video shows Val T Webb taking the stage to sing Deborah Cox’s Nobody’s Supposed to Be Her. She was only a few lines in when John Legend hit his red button. Chance the rapper hit his next. Then Dan + Shay and Reba McEntire turned around shortly after.  Once all the judges saw their star‚ they stood and cheered for the remainder of her performance.  “I’m so happy for you because I see the joy in your face‚ and little relief‚ too‚ I think‚” John said when she was finished. “It’s very difficult doing this audition but you handled it with such poise and grace. I don’t know if you noticed‚ but I was the first one who turned for you. Your tone is so elegant. Do you sing in church? A group of college students from Providence College in Providence‚ RI‚ have grown close with their dorm security guard over the school year‚ so‚ when they learned he hadn’t seen his family in more than a decade‚ they raised enough money to send him on a trip home.  The students moved into the fourth floor of their school’s Raymond Hall this past fall and say they’re now like “family.” That family includes their residence hall security guard‚ James Mogaji‚ originally from Nigeria.  “He is someone that you are drawn towards‚” Sophomore Daniel Singh told WLNE. “He is really kind and compassionate. After a long day‚ you go out on a Friday night after class‚ and you come back‚ James is there.” James had admitted how painful it had been to be away from his family for so long but said he couldn’t afford to make the trip to Africa. On Feb. 29th‚ the students got together and secretly began a GoFundMe page in hopes of raising $3‚500 to give their friend an all-expense paid trip home.  “Once we learned that James hadn’t seen his family in over a decade‚ that’s what kickstarted this for us‚” freshman Brandon Reichert said. “We take care of our own‚ and we firmly believe that James is one of our own.” Before long‚ the page exceeded its goal with nearly 800 donations.  Watch Students Gift Their Security Guard With a Trip Home On March 6‚ the fourth-floor residents gathered to hand James Mogaji an envelope with cash.
