UK Restaurant is Letting People Pay-as-They-Can While Rescuing Tons of Food

A restaurant in England has been able to employ 22 full and part-time staff serving food rescued from landfills to people on a “pay-as-you-can” basis. This fantastic achievement is rooted in two significant challenges faced by the UK: price inflation has increased the average cost of food by a quarter‚ and as many as 10 […] The post UK Restaurant is Letting People Pay-as-They-Can While Rescuing Tons of Food appeared first on Good News Network.

Lawmakers‚ Experts Decry Ongoing COVID-19 Shot Mandates at 48 Colleges

On Tuesday‚ reports surfaced that 48 colleges across the country continue to require prospective students to receive the COVID-19 shot for admission‚ almost a year after the pandemic was declared over by Congress. Lawmakers and policy experts are decrying the ongoing mandates as discriminatory‚ unnecessary‚ overly burdensome‚ and potentially dangerous. The list of colleges requiring the shot‚ which is maintained by the No College Mandates organization‚ includes mostly private colleges‚ with a few prominent exceptions such as Johns Hopkins University. Following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recent revision of its COVID-19 guidelines that suggests staying at home for 24 hours following a fever (which had previously been five days)‚ Harvard University dropped its COVID-19 shot requirement in early March‚ with a number of other smaller colleges likewise dropping their mandate in recent weeks. The College Fix has noted that almost 100 colleges had a COVID-19 shot requirement as of last summer‚ with the number continually dropping since then. Still‚ four dozen schools continue to maintain a requirement‚ which has led one congressman to publicly call for an end to all shot mandates nationwide. “I am on the committee of jurisdiction‚ so we do have oversight responsibilities given the vast amount of funding that goes into higher education‚” Rep. Kevin Kiley‚ R-Calif.‚ told The Epoch Times on Tuesday. “I think there could be avenues we could pursue from a legislative perspective‚ including through funding‚ to see that we don’t have this kind of unscientific flaunting that lacks any hint of rational thought.” He went on to characterize COVID-19 shot requirements as “discrimination” that is “unfair‚ unjust‚ and unnecessary.” New Jersey state Sen. Declan O’Scanlon‚ a Republican‚ was more explicit in his denunciation of shot mandates‚ calling for Rutgers University to be stripped of its state funding. “It is difficult to put into words just how absurd and irrational the vaccination policy is at Rutgers University‚” O’Scanlon stated. “The 2024-2025 semester is just around the corner and the administrators at Rutgers still insist that all students‚ faculty‚ and staff receive the COVID-19 vaccine—a policy that has no basis in science whatsoever. In fact‚ the entire policy is anti-science.” Studies have shown that the COVID-19 shot does not prevent infection or transmission‚ and the CDC itself admits that “vaccinated people sometimes get infected with the virus that causes COVID-19.” Studies have also shown that natural immunity through previous infection is “equivalent” to the shot in preventing future infection. One study even found that “the incidence of COVID infection was higher in vaccine recipients … than in individuals previously infected.” In addition‚ studies of the side effects of the COVID-19 shot continue to raise concerns. A study published in February looked at 99 million vaccinated individuals from around the globe‚ which “confirmed pre-established safety signals for myocarditis‚ pericarditis‚ Guillain-Barré syndrome‚ and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. Other potential safety signals that require further investigation were identified.” In a recent op-ed‚ Fordham University professor Nicholas Tampio pointed out that shot mandates are particularly concerning for students entering college‚ since “the age of peak risk for myocarditis is young adults aged 16-17 years.” As noted by The Epoch Times‚ according to the Food and Drug Administration’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System database‚ “COVID-19 shots have been named the primary suspect in over 1.5 million adverse event reports.” But the real number of adverse events is almost certainly much higher‚ since an “FDA-funded study out of Harvard found that VAERS cases represent fewer than 1 percent of vaccine adverse events.” Policy experts are also voicing alarm at how the lingering COVID-19 shot mandates represent unnecessary obstacles to receiving a college education. “The number of publicly funded universities that are still requiring a shot is very worrisome‚” Meg Kilgannon‚ senior fellow at the Family Research Council‚ told The Washington Stand‚ adding: For the students who want to attend college near home and pay in-state tuition‚ why create another obstacle for them by requiring a controversial vaccine for a disease that doesn’t impact their age cohort severely? Looking through the list of the 48 remaining‚ many are private colleges and too many have religious affiliations. The sooner we can get this list to zero‚ the better! And congratulations to the 536 colleges that NEVER required the vaccine. They should also be recognized for their integrity and making student health and medical freedom a top priority. They didn’t stop students from getting vaxxed but they didn’t force the issue. Jonathan Pidluzny‚ director of the Higher Education Reform Initiative at the America First Policy Institute‚ expressed further dismay at the free speech implications that COVID-19 shot requirements likely represent. “There is no public health justification for COVID-19 vaccine mandates in higher education‚” he told The Washington Stand. “It is an empty political gesture. But it tells you something important about the campus: Administrative leaders have surrendered to far-left activists. “Students who matriculate at those schools can expect four years of anti-intellectual nonsense: from microaggression training camps to shout downs and bias response teams. It would be hard to find a better way to convey to applicants that a university is more interested in exercising top-down control over students’ behavior and thought than in helping them to mature into responsible adults who can think for themselves.” Originally published by The Washington Stand Have an opinion about this article? Here’s How DC Created ‘Crime and Disorder Crisis‚’ Witness Testifies at House Hearing

The nation’s capital has seen a drastic jump in violent crime in recent years‚ putting residents‚ visitors‚ and lawmakers at elevated risk of victimization. A House committee held a hearing Thursday to address the crime issue in the District of Columbia. Among the witnesses was Rafael A. Mangual‚ the Nick Ohnell fellow at the Manhattan Institute‚ a conservative think tank‚ who made his case for a serious rethink about addressing crime in the District. Mangual said the nation’s capital is suffering a “crime and disorder crisis.” The crime spike in Washington‚ D.C.‚ which surged dramatically beginning in the summer of 2020‚ continues to worsen with little sign of slowing down. This has caused some to question “home rule” in the District of Columbia‚ which allows the city to govern itself rather than being governed directly by Congress as it was decades ago. In March 2023‚ Congress and President Joe Biden vetoed a crime bill passed by the D.C. Council that would have shortened prison sentences for convicted carjackers during a historic increase in carjackings. The city witnessed 959 carjackings in 2023‚ twice the number as the previous year. Several high-profile cases‚ such as the carjacking of a congressman and the carjacking-related death of an Afghanistan interpreter have shined a light on this specific crime.  The 13-member D.C. Council‚ made up of 11 Democrats and two independents‚ has taken some steps this year to begin getting crime under control. However‚ Mangual’s testimony during the House Administration Committee hearing‚ titled “D.C. Crime’s Impact on Congressional Operations and Visitors‚” laid out the breadth of the problems and offered some solutions. While violent crime dipped in many cities around the country in the last year‚ Mangual explained‚ the District saw a 35% increase in homicides and a 39% increase in all violent crime.  This makes the District’s homicide rate the highest it’s been in 26 years. That’s not all. Mangual said that robberies and car thefts are up 67% and 82%‚ respectively‚ and that carjackings have “nearly doubled.” The carjacking number is notable‚ he said‚ because the city already has suffered  half a decade of year-to-year carjacking increases. The Manhattan Institute scholar said that these statistics are even more remarkable given how the District of Columbia—like many other U.S. cities after the COVID-19 lockdowns—has seen a significant drop in “routine activities” such as foot traffic‚ in-office work‚ and public transit ridership. Based on cell phone data‚ Mangual noted‚ foot traffic in downtown Washington has dropped 70% from pre-pandemic numbers. This means that “what the official crime statistics don’t fully capture‚” Mangual said‚ is that crime is up dramatically even though the opportunity for crime is down. This trend has been common throughout the nation‚ he said‚ meaning that while crime numbers are down in many other cities‚ the odds of being victimized in cities such as New York‚ Philadelphia‚ and Chicago are up by 15% to 30% compared to 2020. After laying out these statistics‚ Mangual laid out his ideas about what caused the D.C. crime spike and what can be done about it. He said the District has fallen short in two significant ways when it comes to crime. “First is the dwindling number of experienced police officers on the street‚” Mangual said‚ noting that the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department was down by 450 officers compared to 2020. This brings the city police force to its “lowest staffing level in half a century‚” he said. Mangual directly related this statistic to the sharp decline in arrests in the city after 2020 and said that increasing the number of police officers would reduce homicides in the city’s “most troubled enclaves.” The second driver of increased crime in the District is repeat offenders‚ he said. “Not enough is being done to incapacitate those who repeatedly offend‚” Mangual said. “A 2021 report by the National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform reported that‚ quote‚ ‘approximately 86% of homicide victims and suspects were known by the criminal justice system prior to the incident.’” The study also found that most victims and suspects had been arrested about 11 times for 13 offenses prior to the homicide‚ Mangual said. A decline in the share of felony and misdemeanor arrests by police being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office hasn’t helped with this problem‚ he said‚ noting that the number of cases charged by that office hit a 20-year low in 2022. This number went up in 2023‚ however. “The reality is that D.C. has not been immune from the general national trend toward de-policing and de-incarceration‚ and I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that the city has also seen public safety deteriorate since more dramatically moving in that direction‚” Mangual said. Mangual concluded by saying that even if the District of Columbia sees some future declines in crime overall‚ it has to focus on more police and more prosecutions to target repeat offenders.  If the nation’s capital is to turn around this public safety issue‚ he said‚ it will have to “address the gaps in policing and prosecution that have allowed too many chronic offenders to walk the streets of our nation’s capital with too few officers to respond and prevent the sort of offenses that have been plaguing D.C. and visitors for far too long.” Have an opinion about this article? Newly Released Emails Show Biden White House Officials Met With and Communicated With Pro-Censorship Group

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. America First Legal (AFL) has published emails revealing more ties between the Biden White House and the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) – a controversial group originally based in the UK that’s believed to be involved in censorship pressure around the world. The emails originate in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of State and refer to using US assets designed to counter domestic terrorism to work with CCDH‚ the non-profit has announced. AFL – which positions itself as a counterpoint to ACLU – has filed several lawsuits concerning various government bodies’ involvement in collusion with private tech companies‚ aimed at promoting censorship. AFL now notes that the Biden administration from the very beginning of the current president’s mandate “embraced” various initiatives leading to curtailing speech‚ and to censorship‚ and was not shy to enlist the national security apparatus‚ either. The administration at one point said that in order to “maximize” understanding of domestic terrorism‚ it should back “and making appropriate use of the analysis performed by entities outside the government.” CCDH is one of those entities‚ AFL says‚ and the documents now released concerned how the group worked with the White House to suppress speech in the US on topics like vaccine mandates and the questioning of the integrity of the 2020 presidential election – all the while trying to fit that within the concept of domestic terrorism. DHS and CCDH “got in touch” in late March 2022‚ when DHS Under Secretary Robert Silvers and CCDH head of policy at the time‚ Eva Hartshorn-Sanders‚ started their communication‚ which is revealed in the emails. AFL notes that Sanders was involved in various controversial government efforts in different countries‚ including UK’s Online Safety Bill. Already in June 2022‚ the Biden Administration set up the Task Force to Address Online Harassment and Abuse. “By September 23‚ 2022‚ CCDH was directly meeting with officials from the White House‚ the NSC‚ and the Department of State’s Bureau of Counterterrorism (CT)‚ updating them with CCDH’s latest findings‚” AFL said. And when in March of last year the task force received its Initial Blueprint‚ Sanders said her organization was “able to feed in research and policy recommendations for its development.” Other examples of the Biden administration-CCDH ties came to light earlier‚ specifically how the UK-based outfit helped the US government pressure Facebook to censor content about Covid vaccines.
