Duendes hold a significant place in the cultural fabric of Latin America. They represent a connection to the supernatural and continue to captivate and intrigue people across different cultures.Duendes are mythical creatures that have been part of Latin American and Spanish folklore for centuries. They are often portrayed as elf-like beings with mischievous personalities. In different regions‚ duendes take on various forms and have unique characteristics.One popular representation of duendes can be found in the South American country of Ecuador‚ where they are known as El Duende. In Ecuadorian folklore‚ El Duende is often portrayed as a small‚ gnome-like creature.El Duende is believed to inhabit natural landscapes such as forests‚ mountains‚ and rivers. They are said to dwell in hidden places‚ using their magical powers to guard the environment and its inhabitants. These mythical creatures are often described as small beings with pointy ears and hats‚ who are known for their playful and sometimes prankster nature.I recently received a telephone call from Juan De Dios Silva‚ an Ecuadorian man who lives in the United States. He is quite familiar with the folklore of his native Ecuador‚ especially when it comes to El Duende.He told me about an experience that his grandmother and great-aunt had during the 1910s. The sisters‚ named Amada (Juan’s grandmother‚ aged 8 years old) and Zoila (Juan’s great-aunt‚ aged 7 years old) lived in the small town of Alausi‚ located in the Chimborazo province of Ecuador‚ among the foothills of the Andes Mountains.Juan prefaced the story by explaining that the women in his family were very beautiful and that they possessed another unique characteristic. Namely‚ that they were very hairy.The family had a small store in the town‚ and the sisters were responsible for gathering the rubbish from the business and taking it to a field outside of town so that it could be burned. This was usually a daily chore.One day‚ the sisters were dragging the rubbish toward the field. As they were walking‚ Zoila told Amada that a small boy was standing by the tree and that he was smoking a cigar. Also‚ the boy had very large shoes. This boy intently watched the girls as they passed by him. He didn’t take his eyes off them. The boy was an El Duende‚ or what they referred to as a Tintin.It was said that Tintin usually appeared at night and threw pebbles at girls to get his attention and make them fall in love.  He would follow the girls that interested him and wouldn't leave them alone. He would chase beautiful and virgin women‚ with long black hair and lots of body hair. He made them fall in love to take them away or to father abnormal children‚ often half animals‚ half men.The sisters tried to ignore Tintin‚ but he began to follow them. According to Amada‚ he got close to them and began to tickle the sisters‚ thus falling under his possessive spell.Sometime later‚ the sisters were found lying in the field by a local man who happened to notice the unresponsive girls. They were both foaming at the mouth. The man knew the girls and the family from the town‚ so he picked them up and quickly took them home‚ where they soon recovered. A delivery driver encounters‚ what he describes as‚ a 7-foot tall‚ creepy‚ foul-smelling antlered 'deer man' on a dark rural road in Northeast Arkansas.I received the following account:"This happened to me in January 2014‚ on a back road in Northeast Arkansas. At the time I was a newspaper delivery driver. I picked up my papers from the press usually at 12:15 am‚ and it was a 45-minute drive to start my route.At the time I was a cigarette smoker‚ so after I bagged up enough newspapers to sustain my route for a while‚ I’d light up a cigarette and roll the window down. Being cold‚ I tried to keep it up as much as possible because my car back then didn’t have A/C.There’s a really long stretch of gravel road called Old Military Rd near Harrisburg‚ Arkansas. On the left side of the road are mostly houses and on the right are fence posts and open pasture with barns and troughs for horses and cows. It is in the middle of nowhere though. There are no streetlights‚ some people have floodlights in their yard. So I’m driving along with my windows down smoking a cigarette. It’s about 2:20-2:30 am and I begin smelling a combination of burning hair and urine. Like‚ not a mixture of the two‚ but one and also the other. It isn’t a great smell. I toss the cigarette and roll my window up but can still smell whatever this awful smell is. The further I go down the road the worse the smell gets. Usually see some of the cows sleeping outside or horses chilling sometimes‚ but nothing tonight. So I know that I’m not the only one who picked up on something being weird that night.As I’m coming up to a fork in the road‚ I have to take the left‚ there is a big open field to the far right‚ and I see what looks like a man with a deer’s head. It was too dark for me to tell whether it was a man wearing a deer skull or an actual human/deer cross‚ but it was definitely the source of whatever the smell was. It scared the heck out of me and I didn’t want to hang out long enough to figure out exactly what it was.To my perception‚ he was at shoulder height‚ 7 feet tall. The head probably added a foot of height‚ I don’t know‚ but he was massive. They were definitely deer antlers. And the smell was disgusting. I saw him stretch his arms‚ imagine flexing your arms and chest by making a wide “C” with your arms. His movement‚ for the 2-3 seconds I saw him‚ looked to be human.I found a new job in late January and started in February‚ but I was not interested in ever being out in that area again. In the early 1960s‚ in the Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn‚ a witness described seeing a leathery winged creature with a human face. A UFO was reported to have crashed into Lake Michigan soon after.I received the following account:"I didn't see the creature. My mother did around 1960 in the Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn‚ IL. My aunt was present‚ but said she didn't see it. My dad and uncle were in the house with us kids and also saw nothing. She described it as having leathery wings like a bat but also had arms and a human face. She had watched it from a distance as it approached. She originally thought it was a HUGE bird. Standing on the railings of our porch to get a better look‚ and said it was almost close enough to touch. She said it flapped its wings slowly‚ gliding as much as flying.Within a few moments‚ there was a radio report about a UFO crashing into Lake Michigan‚ and both families jumped into our cars and went to the lake to see. It took a half-hour or so to get to the lake‚ and police were on the scene by then shooing people away. I was in the first grade at the time. My parents were both practical people not given to jumping at shadows or imagining things." A camp counselor describes an urban legend connected to the nearby woods. It is said that Hellhounds would drive out unfaithful suitors if they entered the location. Maybe there was some truth to the story.I received the following account:"I have a story that has creeped me out since it happened‚ some nights I’ll think about it and not be able to sleep.I’ll set the scene. It was the summer of 2011 and I was a camp counselor at a small‚ private college that sponsors ACT classes for high school students. At this camp‚ six other college students and I mentored‚ tutored‚ and‚ in a sense‚ babysat‚ over 50 high school students who would stay on the college campus and sleep in the college dorms for 6 weeks. It was always tough‚ but it was always rewarding.2011 was my second year working at this ACT camp‚ and I had started a relationship with one of the other college students. We’d stay up every night after the high school students went to bed and we’d explore the campus. Sneaking into the college chapel at midnight‚ taking walks at their small lake and forest‚ and spending late nights in the courtyard. I want to mention this is one of the oldest colleges in one of the oldest towns in Arkansas. They even have a cabin built in the 1800s still standing.My new girlfriend told me a story around the end of June about the small lake and forest where we’d sometimes take our late-night walks. She told me in the 1980’s there was a girl who went to college who loved a boy‚ and he said he loved her‚ but he cheated on the girl‚ and when she confronted him‚ he was able to convince all his friends and most of campus to bully her. They didn’t know she was a Wiccan and regularly practiced witchcraft. The girl ran off into the woods by the lake after being bullied one evening and didn’t come back until the next morning. The day she came back she was able to convince the boy she had loved to follow her back to the woods the next night. He followed her into the woods until she disappeared in the dark‚ and he got lost. Then he heard growling and barking and snarling‚ and the noises chased him into a clearing with strange symbols out of burnt limbs on the ground‚ and the girl’s body hanging from a tree. Then the barking and snarling chased him out of the forest. And the urban legend continues now‚ if a girl brings her boyfriend to the woods‚ and the Hellhounds sense he is unfaithful or his intentions are not pure‚ they’ll chase him out of the forest‚ and this was the girl’s final act of protecting other girls from unfaithful boys.Of course‚ we had to check it out together. She and I went out to the woods by the lake around midnight‚ and from the asphalt trail circling the lake‚ we found a dirt trail leading into the woods. We didn’t have flashlights‚ so we used our lights on our smartphones. We climbed down a small hill into the trees‚ and exactly when we walked on even ground‚ our smartphone lights started flashing. The flashlight was flashing on and off‚ and the home screen was also flashing on and off with no lock screen. I have no idea how it was possible. When we rushed back up on the asphalt trail‚ the flashing stopped‚ and we looked at our phones confused. I had to climb down a second time‚ even though‚ she didn’t want to do it again‚ because I needed to test that it wasn’t a fluke or coincidence. When I hit even ground again‚ my phone flashed exactly the same as before‚ and then I climbed back out. She wanted to leave‚ and I agreed. President Joe Biden has transformed America’s southern border into a humanitarian catastrophe and a national security nightmare. This bloody‚ deadly mess is a clear and present danger to this republic. But this also is a massive fiscal threat. Biden’s obliteration of the border is evaporating federal‚ state‚ and local coffers. Precise figures on anything illegal are‚ by definition‚ elusive. Nonetheless‚ the Federation for American Immigration Reform’s report‚ “The Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration on United States Taxpayers 2023‚” estimates that taxpayers bleed $182.1 billion in annual benefits to illegal aliens. That includes $66.4 billion in federal spending and an additional $115.7 billion in state and local outlays to those who have broken into America. “No sweat!” illegal-alien apologists argue. “They work hard‚ pay taxes‚ and pull their own weight.” If only. “Taxes paid by illegal aliens only cover around 17.2% of the costs they create for American citizens‚” FAIR calculates. That includes $16.2 billion in federal taxes and $15.2 billion in state and local levies. The $31.4 billion still stick U.S. citizens with 82.8% of the illegal immigrants’ $150.7 billion annual tab. Extrapolating that figure suggests that—since Biden took control three years ago Saturday—these foreign invaders have siphoned some $452 billion from the U.S. Treasury‚ statehouses‚ and city halls across America. Specifically: Federal Welfare: $11.6 billion Medical: $23.1 billion Law enforcement/justice: $25.1 billion Education: $6.6 billion State and local Welfare: $2 billion Medical: $18.6 billion Law enforcement/justice: $21.8 billion Education: $73.3 billion Every penny of this largesse is avoidable. Sealing the southern frontier and requiring that immigrants present visas would halt this relentless onslaught. The fact that illegal-alien encounters have soared 336% under Biden vs. President Donald Trump pins this evil on No-Borders Biden and the DEI Democrats. “The impact of these policies is causing social upheaval‚ setting states against other states‚ big cities against surrounding communities‚ overwhelming school districts and social service providers‚ as economic migrants from all across the globe pour across our borders‚” said FAIR President Dan Stein. This foreign menace plagues U.S. cities and states: Due to the 37‚000 illegals who have swamped Denver since December‚ Democratic Mayor Mike Johnston said Wednesday that his city faces “a fiscal crisis unlike anything we have seen in the last 25 years.” He expects illegals to cost Denver $180 million this year. Denver Health hospital is in critical condition because 8‚000 illegals have paid nothing for their 20‚000 visits. Gov. Greg Abbott‚ R-Texas‚ told Fox Business Network anchor Stuart Varney on Jan. 4: “Since Joe Biden has taken office‚ Texas taxpayers have borne the brunt of about $10 billion in costs for Texas to do the federal government’s job to try to secure the border.” Some 160‚000 illegals have flooded New York City since spring 2022. So‚ Democratic Mayor Eric Adams announced plans to slash spending across the board 5% for three years each. This reduction in police‚ fire‚ sanitation‚ education‚ and all else totaled $12.25 billion to keep illegals clothed‚ fed‚ housed and education. Hence‚ Adams has canceled five police academy rookie classes. Unexpectedly higher revenues let Adams pare those cuts to $10.6 billion. Regardless‚ New York’s residents anticipate deadlier streets‚ brighter infernos‚ dirtier sidewalks and dimmer students. Adams detonated a rage bomb on Jan. 9 when he bused 1‚900 illegal “guests” from a rain-soaked tent city to Brooklyn’s James Madison High School and banished its students to Zoom classes. This betrayal infuriated Madison’s largely black‚ Hispanic Democratic parents. Biden’s border-killing policies have lured an estimated 8.47 million illegal aliens into the hands of sadistic cartels and rape-happy human smugglers. He shines a green light for foreign criminals‚ spies and terrorists. On Biden’s watch‚ 312 of the latter have been nabbed at the border‚ versus 11 under Trump—up 2‚736%.
