The History of the Keytar by Jason Gross @SockofFleagulls on October 6‚ 2011 in The 80s Let’s face the facts of keyboard players in 1979: Fact #1: Piano or keyboard players in rock and roll bands never got as many groupies as the lead guitarist. Fact #2: Expressing your tremendous talent at a piece of musical furniture just didn’t give you the stage presence and attention you needed to attract those groupies. Fact #3: Those dance lessons would never pay off until you got out from behind that keyboard. These facts became fiction in 1980 when the godfather of the synthesizer‚ the Moog Music company‚ released the Keytar. Keyboard players everywhere rejoiced. Liberation from stands and stools! Liberation from immobility! Liberation from lead guitarist oppression! The Moog Liberation gave ivory ticklers everywhere a chance to grow out their hair‚ put on a pair of tight leather pants‚ and show the world that they‚ well…existed! AND SHOW US THEY DID! As the synthpop sounds of the early 80s grew in popularity‚ so did the presence of keytarists in bands like Devo &; Gary Numan. By 1983‚ keytarists had proven that they didn’t need a band‚ as solo artists like Howard Jones and Thomas Dolby emerged. MTV video airplay also helped to popularize the keytars as fans could see that the sounds weren’t coming from a traditional keyboard. But it wasn’t just pop music that was influenced by the keytar. Jazz artists like Herbie Hancock &; Spyro Gyra used the instrument in their live shows. Plus‚ keytarists were hired by glam metal bands like Poison for their live shows in the early to mid 80s. In 1985‚ the synthetic sounds of Harold Faltermeyer and Jan Hammer penetrated the airwaves through film and television. Wait‚ who? Yes‚ the #1 instrumental hits Axel F (Theme from Beverly Hills Cop) and the Miami Vice Theme gave us indisputable proof that the keytarist could go no higher. Cartoons like Jem and the Silverhawks even joined the wave by featuring characters clutching keytars. But the pinnacle was reached at the 1985 Grammys with the ultimate 4-way keytar &; synthesizer death match‚ the likes of which the world had ever seen: After this‚ the keytar had nowhere else to go‚ but back to its horizontal and proper state.  The popularity of hard rock and metal grew in the late 80s as the lead guitarists retrieved the limelight from the balding‚ computer-using keytarists. By 1987‚ the keytar was nothing but a prop for Gwildor in the Masters of the Universe movie. In 1991‚ the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles used one to defeat Shredder in one scene. But despite the downfall and mockery‚ the keytar has survived with the likes of Prince and more recently Alicia Keys‚ Muse‚ and Lady Gaga‚ using it to perform. But with these artists creating their own keytars to reflect their style‚ any lasting value of the keytar has really diminished and is now basically a glorified prop for these established artists. It’s safe to say‚ that the Keytar is probably best left where it belongs…the 1980s. President Joe Biden is bleeding Hispanic support in New Mexico‚ a state he won by 10 points in 2020 with the help of the key demographic group‚ according to a new poll shared with The Daily Wire. New polling data from Power the Future and Public Opinion Strategies shows that the president’s disapproval rating among Hispanics in New Mexico has skyrocketed since taking office. Of the Hispanics polled in the Power the Future survey‚ 63% disapprove of the job Biden has done — with 51% strongly disapproving — while 36% approve of his performance.  Biden’s disapproval rating among Hispanics in the state is a complete flip from the 2020 election results‚ which saw Biden take 61% of the Hispanic vote compared to just 38% for Trump. The president’s overall approval rating in New Mexico isn’t much better‚ as 41% of voters approve of Biden compared to 57% who disapprove‚ which is nearly identical to the national average‚ according to the poll.  “Politically‚ New Mexico may be a small state‚ but these results spell big trouble for Joe Biden‚” Power the Future Communications Director Larry Behrens told The Daily Wire. “The biggest issues on the minds of voters are the economy and crime‚ so it’s clear Joe Biden’s failures are the driving force behind why his numbers are taking a dive.”  The poll‚ which surveyed 500 registered likely votes in the state between January 5-8‚ showed that the top issues for New Mexicans are the economy (24%)‚ crime (23%)‚ and education (15%). Immigration (12%) came in behind the environment (13%).  Nearly half of Hispanic voters polled rated the state’s economy as “poor‚” while another 33% said the economy was “only fair.” Meanwhile‚ 73% of all registered voters polled by Power the Future said the economy was either “poor” or “only fair.”  “Families in New Mexico are just like families across the rest of the country‚ they are paying higher prices for everything so it’s no surprise they’ve decided Joe Biden needs to pay a political price too‚” said Behrens.  In the last presidential election‚ Biden beat Trump in New Mexico by nearly 100‚000 votes‚ easily taking the state’s two largest cities‚ Albuquerque and Las Cruces. They say that alligators survived the ice age‚ and that may be true. Although they cannot withstand extreme cold temperatures. They likely did not reside in the most northern climates but could have survived in the southern regions. Alligators don’t hibernate as many mammals do but can go into a period of dormancy known as a modified form of brumation. Such was the case in North Carolina recently when a park ranger noticed a frozen alligator. Image from Facebook. Lovingly called “gatorcicles‚” the frozen alligators appeared when temperatures dropped down into the teens. The swamps where the rescued critters reside are not very deep‚ so they are subject to freezing when outside temperatures drop and remain low. The Shallotte River Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach‚ NC‚ posted a video chronicling the event. The park is open year-round and hosts family activities‚ including zip lines and guided ATV and swamp boat tours. You can enjoy the live Gator cam on YouTube. While many people are aware of what hibernation is‚ most have never heard of the reptile version. Thought of as an extreme type of brumation‚ alligators have the ability to go dormant during freezing temperatures. When their habitat freezes‚ they will extend their snout above the surface to allow for breathing. The water freezes around their nose‚ and they will remain in place until the next thaw. On warmer days‚ they will wake enough to drink water and shift slightly while basking in the sun. When passing by one of these dormant gators‚ visitors will likely only see teeth. Huge gator teeth just hovering in a frozen gator-grimace. “Their pond that they live in has frozen‚” said park manager George Howard in a Facebook post. He added‚ “Thick enough for these guys to do what they do‚ which is stick their nose up out of the ice so that they can breathe‚ and suspend themselves in the water.” Due to the warmer climate in NC‚ the gators won’t stay frozen for more than a few days at a time. The ability to go into dormancy is part of their survival. Although it might be tempting‚ we do not recommend attempting to boop the snoot of a frozen alligator. There’s a reason that dogs are considered to be man’s best friend. The Farm Bureau recognizes this and aims to shine a light on some of the best canines around through their Farm Dog of the Year contest. Each year‚ they invite farmers to submit nominations. This year‚ the first prize goes to a caring dog named Skippy. His owner‚ Donald Adams‚ had been a farmer for years before his four-legged friend became his right-hand pup. Like so many others‚ Donald loves what he does. Then‚ while Donald and his son were working with bails of hay‚ one bounced in such a way that it hit the back of his head.
