Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter‚ Emmy Russell‚ Set To Shine On ‘American Idol’

In the highly anticipated 22nd season of American Idol‚ viewers were in for a treat as an audition teaser featured a contestant with an extraordinary musical pedigree. Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter‚ Emmy Russell‚ is set to take center stage at the event and wow the audience with her brilliant performance. In a discussion with the Kingston Springs Gazette‚ Russell shared her motivation for auditioning for American Idol. She explained that her decision stemmed from a desire to discover her unique path‚ distinct from the trajectory that led to Loretta Lynn’s success. Emmy Russell shares her reasons for deciding to take part in ‘American Idol’   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Emmy Russell (@emmyroserussell) “I just wanted to be around other young creatives like me‚” Russell told the news outlet. “I think I just like the hard work of it‚ and it was outside the traditional way that my grandma had — which is a publishing deal‚ then get the record deal.” RELATED: How Patsy Cline Protected Loretta Lynn From An Attempt To Ban Her From The Grand Ole Opry She also mentioned that participating in the show’s audition process pushed her beyond her usual boundaries and challenged her to embrace new experiences. “I wanted something out there and fun‚ and it just forced me to do it‚” Russell admitted. “Because I’m so shy and scared of going for it.” Instagram The 25-year-old showcased her musical prowess during her debut performance at the prestigious Grand Ole Opry in Nashville on April 13‚ 2023‚ in tribute to her grandmother’s first-year posthumous birthday. Teaming up with Lukas Nelson‚ son of the legendary Willie Nelson‚ she delivered a poignant rendition of “Lay Me Down‚” the very song that marked the inaugural collaboration between her grandmother and Willie Nelson. The performance was met with thunderous applause and a standing ovation from the audience. Instagram Russell couldn’t hide her excitement about the experience as she eagerly took to her Instagram to share her joy and gratitude with her followers. “It’s pretty cool to start your career by thanking the person‚ my grandma‚ and honoring her by this being my first time alone with a guitar since her passing. I used to run from my family heritage and wanna make my own path. I feel a deep conviction to thank‚ accept‚ and celebrate her‚ cause she believed in me from the start before anyone did‚” she captioned the post. “Not ashamed anymore. She was never ashamed of me… I’m a granddaughter‚ and I’m Emmy… it’s all a part of me! This is the start of a beautiful journey. Couldn’t be more excited.” Click for next Article The post Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter‚ Emmy Russell‚ Set To Shine On ‘American Idol’ appeared first on DoYouRemember? - The Home of Nostalgia. ‘Alice’ Cast Then And Now 2024

UPDATED 2/20/2024 Kiss My Grits! A standout line from the fantastic sitcom Alice‚ which aired from 1976 to 1985 and was inspired by the 1974 Scorsese film‚ Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Interesting fact‚ the shot of the station wagon during the show’s opening credits is from the film. Linda Lavin‚ aka Alice (taking over the role that Ellen Burstyn originated)‚ even sang the opening theme song.  This CBS show centered around an aspiring singer named Alice who moves to Phoenix‚ Arizona with her son to start life anew. As things progress‚ Alice‚ Flo and company take the audience for a ride every episode‚ and a lot of funny stuff happens at Mel’s Diner! On top of that‚ the show was socially relevant because along with One Day at a Time‚ it highlighted Second Wave Feminism. Today‚ we’ll take a table for a thousand‚ to check out the cast of Alice and see what they got into after they clocked out! Order up!   1. Linda Lavin (Alice Hyatt) Everett Collection Alice Hyatt is the friend everyone needs. Great at giving advice‚ which people frequently sought her out for.  Alice was a force to be reckoned with‚ always standing up to the chauvinistic Mel and never losing her sense of humor. Linda Lavin came from a musical family as her mother was an opera singer‚ encouraging Linda to be on stage at just 5 years old. Her professional acting career began in 1963 with multiple episodes of the daytime soap The Doctors. RELATED: Remembering ‘Alice’ Star Philip McKeon: ‘Good‚ Kind‚ Honest‚ Dedicated’ ALICE‚ Linda Lavin‚ 1976-85 But her big break was as Detective Janice Wentworth in the early seasons of the Hal Linden-led police sitcom Barney Miller. She left that show for Alice‚ a career-defining role that earned her two Golden Globe awards and one Emmy nomination. The final season showcased Lavin in two roles as she also played Debbie Walden. In addition to acting‚ Lavin directed 10 episodes beginning with Season 4’s “Vera‚ the Vamp.” Following the success of Alice‚ she co-starred with Everybody Loves Raymond’s Patricia Heaton in Room For Two. A personal favorite non-TV role of hers is as Kermit’s Doctor in The Muppets Take Manhattan. NAKED SINGULARITY‚ Linda Lavin‚ 2021. © Screen Media Films /Courtesy Everett Collection She’s also done a wide variety of theatre‚ receiving six Tony Nominations‚ winning Best Leading Actress in 1987; as well as singing in cabaret! Today‚ she’s 86 years old and was recently back on CBS‚ as Norma in the Chuck Lorre produced show‚ B Positive. We’re positive that Linda is far from done yet‚ having appeared in a 2020 episode of Room 104 ‚ played I Love Lucy writer Madelyn Pugh in the 2021 Amazon movie Being the Ricardos and appeared in the 2021 film Naked Singularity.  2. Vic Tayback (Mel Sharples) Everett Collection / PicsofCelebrities.com After a stint in the US Navy‚ Mel Sharples became a cook‚ opening‚ Mel’s Diner — always adorned in a greasy t-shirt and sailor cap‚ and armed with a spatula. Although this gravel-voiced cook produced sub-par food‚ the humor was prepared just right: well-done. Brooklyn-born Vic Tayback was brilliant as Mel‚ reprising his role from the original movie. Vic himself served in the Navy before beginning his acting career at 27. He began booking TV roles in the late‘50s and continued on from there‚ Including in multiple episodes of Bewitched and Gunsmoke. ALICE‚ Vic Tayback‚ 1976-85 In 1973‚ he snagged a role on the Lorne Green-led show Griff as Captain Barney Marcus‚ but it only lasted one season. No sweat off his back as he then became Mel for the 1974 film. Late in his career‚ he profited off being a grillmaster‚ starring in some Heinz 57 ads. We last saw him in an episode of MacGyver in 1990. Tayback sadly died that same year from a heart attack; he was only 60 years old. 3. Beth Howland (Vera Gorman) Everett Collection / YouTube Screenshot Vera‚ along with Alice‚ was the only waitresses at Mel’s Diner who lasted the show’s entire run. She was very lovable and shy‚ oftentimes clumsy and neurotic. Beth Howland began acting in 1959 but didn’t hit it big until the early ’70s when she began booking TV shows‚ like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Love‚ American Style.  ALICE‚ Beth Howland‚ 1976-85 After Alice‚ Beth was typecast as that neurotic character‚ so she semi-retired‚ only taking episodes of shows every once in a while. Her last gig was voicing Dr. Leventhal in the animated Nickelodeon show As Told By Ginger in 2002. That same year she also wed Murphy Brown actor Charles Kimbrough and remained married to him until her death on New Year’s Eve in 2015. Beth was 76. 4. Polly Holiday (Florence ‘Flo’ Jean Castleberry) Everett Collection / YouTube Screenshot Florence Jean Castleberry‚ better known as Flo‚ became a waitress at Mel’s Diner after three unsuccessful marriages and took on a motherly role to Alice. Flo was wise‚ man-crazy‚ and very country‚ with one of the best catchphrases in TV history‚ “Sorry Mel‚ but you better kiss those grits.” Polly Holliday got her start on Broadway in 1973. While in All Over Town‚ she befriended the show’s director‚ the one and only Dustin Hoffman. The two would work together again in 1976 on the movie All the President’s Men. Flo made Polly world-famous‚ and she later had her own spinoff series simply called Flo. The show was popular in its first season‚ but a season 2 time change negatively affected ratings and it was canned. ALICE‚ (clockwise from left): Polly Holliday‚ Vic Tayback‚ Beth Howland‚ Linda Lavin‚ Philip McKeon‚ 1976-85 She had a great role in 1995 as Momma Love in the TV series The Client. and continued this motherly trend as Jill Taylor’s mother in the ever-popular Tim Allen-led sitcom Home Improvement. She also held some memorable movie roles through the years like in Robin Williams’ Mrs. Doubtfire‚ and as the camp director in the Lindsay Lohan remake of The Parent Trap. We last saw her acting in the 2010 film Fair Game and today she is 86 years old and living her best-retired life. 5. Philip McKeon (Tommy Hyatt) Everett Collection / YouTube Screenshot Tommy Hyatt was  Alice’s son who took after mom‚ loving music and being a very talented guitarist‚ often performing duets with Mom. He also looked up to Mel a lot‚ seeing him as a father figure. Philip McKeon played the role of Tommy after Alfred Lutter had reprised the part from the film‚ but was replaced after the pilot episode. This was Philip’s first role‚ but he’d been a print model since age four! ALICE‚ Philip McKeon‚ 1976-85 Philip’s younger sister Nancy would join him on two episodes of Alice before she also became a star as the character ‘Jo’ on The Facts of Life. Philip didn’t do much after being a child star‚ transitioning into radio and news. He was the co-host of a morning radio show called The Breakfast Taco. Terribly‚ McKeon actually passed away in 2019 at the age of 55 after battling a long-term illness. 6. Diane Ladd (Belle Dupree) Everett Collection Belle Dupree was an ex-waitress at Mel’s Diner in many ways. In the plot of the TV series‚ as well as actually having played the role of Flo in the Scorsese film. Diane joined the show in Season 4 after Polly Holliday ventured out on her own spin-off. Allegedly‚ Alice herself‚ Linda Lavin‚ had trouble getting along with her co-stars‚ which is why Polly Holliday and Diane Ladd left the show.  ALICE‚ (from left): Diane Ladd‚ Linda Lavin‚ (Season 5)‚ 1976-85 Nineteen-seventy-four really was Diane Ladd’s year: along with her starring role in Alice‚ she had a supporting role in Roman Polanski’s Chinatown. Ladd was married to actor Bruce Dern from 1960 to 1969 and the two co-starred together in the ’66 Motorcycle film The Wild Angels. The couple had two daughters: Diane Elizabeth Dern‚ who died at 18 months; and actress Laura Dern‚ whom Diane got to co-star with in Laura’s HBO series Enlightened. What a family! We last saw her in the 2020 Hallmark film Charlie’s Christmas Wish‚ and in an uncredited role in 2021’s Charming the Hearts of Men as well as an episode of Young Sheldon and the 2022 film Gigi &; Nate. She is 88 years old and still kickin’‚ so we hope to see more of her soon! 7. Charles Levin (Elliot Novak) Everett Collection / YouTube Screenshot Elliot Novak met and immediately fell for Vera Louise when he had her arrested and ticketed for jaywalking and soon ended up marrying her. Charles Levin got his start in the mid-’70s and joined the cast of Alice in 1983. He also had the recurring role of Eddie Gregg on Hill Street Blues from 1982 to 1986. His next major role was in 1994 as A.D.A. Maury Abrams in NYPD Blue.  ALICE‚ from left: Charles Levin‚ Beth Howland‚ 1976-85 He hadn’t acted since 1998. In 2019‚ his son reported him missing while Levin was in the process of moving to a new house. Police found Levin dead at age 70‚ ruling his death accidental. Such a tragic end. Alice was a terrific ’70s sitcom with some great guest stars‚ too‚ including the legendary Desi Arnaz and even The Brady Bunch’s Florence Henderson. Who was your favorite employee at Mel’s Diner? Did you watch the spinoff show‚ Flo? Let us know in the comments‚ we wanna hear from you. 10 Survival Skills You Can Learn From Your Couch

Even if you aren’t a couch potato‚ you still have to kick up your feet and take it easy every once in a while. Why not learn a few survival skills while you do? The best skills are learned with some blood‚ sweat‚ and tears- but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn anything while just sitting around. Here are a few ideas to make your downtime on the couch a little more productive: 1. Tie Some Knots Knots are about the easiest survival skill you can teach yourself on the couch. You could pull up our Top 10 Survival Knots Guide and go through the visuals and videos. Once you have those mastered down to muscle memory‚ try a few of the more advanced knots by picking up a copy of the ultimate knot resource: The ABOK. 2. Speak Another Language Speaking multiple languages is very useful every day‚ but it can also be for survival reasons. Being able to communicate with more people in an emergency is a great skill to have in your pocket. It is tough learning another language and takes a long time to master‚ but even simple words and phrases can be useful in a disaster. You may also find it helps during everyday activities‚ and it can even give you a leg up at your workplace. 3. Pick a Lock Picking locks can get you into safe places‚ help you find useful resources‚ and maybe most importantly‚ help you understand how to prevent your own locks from being picked. If you have never picked a lock before‚ grab a clear lock and start fiddling with it in your free time. They are pretty easy to figure out‚ and then you can go for speed. Once you’ve mastered the clear lock‚ try a keyed padlock that isn’t clear. Once you master a padlock‚ you can move on to experimenting with deadbolts. A starter lockpicking kit will work great for survival purposes once you’ve learned how to use it. 4. Practice Whittling or Bushcraft Grab a stick and knife and start making something. Whether you are making something practical‚ a piece of art‚ or practicing feathering wood- you can get some good hands-on time while you are on the couch. Both whittling and bushcraft are skills best learned by actually doing them and practicing often. 5. Weave a Net Knowing how to make a net in the wilderness with just rope or string can be a huge help. Sure‚ you’ll look like an old lady knitting some socks‚ but the hands-on experience could be invaluable when SHTF. You can then use nets to set traps‚ as gill nets or drag nets for fishing‚ to carry stuff‚ or as a hammock. 6. Identify Some Plants Learning how to identify plants is best done in the woods‚ but books and online sites have a large number of pictures these days. The Edible Wild Plants guide is a low-priced way to learn which plants around you are edible:. Before you go around and start snacking on the stuff growing around your house‚ you still may want to check with somebody a little more experienced. If you really have to‚ you can rely on the Universal Edibility Test… but getting familiar with an edible plant guide is a MUCH better option. 7. Identify Some Fungus Just like learning about plants‚ there are several resources on how to identify the different types of fungi in the wild. The National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms may be just the book to crack open on the couch and start learning. I am more of a hands-on learner and haven’t had much success learning wildlife‚ plants‚ or fungus from the couch‚ but some are able to learn this type of stuff like a sponge. Either way‚ learning some skills from a book is better than most programs on TV these days. 8. Watch Some Survival TV Right after I get done talking about how TV programs are worse than a fungus book‚ I’m going to suggest you turn it on. Fire up the television set and check out some of the survival shows that are running these days. Alone‚ Dual Survival‚ and anything with Ray Mears are a few that I linger on while flipping the channels. My family usually finds the situations they find themselves in interesting‚ and I almost always learn something new- or what not to do: 22 Prepper TV Shows | Survival Worth Streaming 20 Off-Grid TV Shows Worth Watching 50 Survival Movies Preppers Should Watch 9. Read Some Prepper Fiction There are plenty of great books out there‚ and there is no shortage of fiction focused on surviving catastrophes. There are even a few good free collections that you can find on Amazon. Be sure to grab them while they are still free because they often don’t stay that way for long. Also‚ check out our take on One Second After‚ a novel that sets the bar as far as we’re concerned. 10. Binge Some YouTube Let’s face it- you already use YouTube to look up how-tos all the time‚ so why not use it for survival skills too? There are plenty of creators out there putting their skills on display. It’s entertaining and educational! We run a top 10 annually so you can cut through the noise and get straight to the good stuff. Here are our latest: The 10 Best Prepper YouTube Channels The 10 Best Off-Grid Homesteading YouTube Channels The 10 Best Wilderness Survival YouTube Channels The Final Word Survival skills don’t have to be learned standing up. Try learning a few while you are winding down at night‚ or while your significant other is watching that TV show you don’t care for. Knowledge is power‚ and you are never too old to learn. Let us know in the comments the ways you improve your survival skills on the couch.
