Gavin Newsom Files Lawsuit Against Fox News

Gavin Newsom Files Lawsuit Against Fox News

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has sued Fox News, accusing the network of defaming him in its reporting of a phone call he had with President Trump. The Democrat governor is seeking $787 million in damages. According to reports, the lawsuit references a segment from host Jesse Watters. In the suit, the lawyers alleged Watters claimed Newsom lied about his calls with Trump. Newsom’s lawyers allege Watters’ program misleadingly edited a video of Trump regarding National Guard troops being sent to Los Angeles to support the claim. “No more lies. I’m suing Fox News for $787 million,” Newsom announced. No more lies. I’m suing Fox News for $787 million.https://t.co/L73VUsPsuB pic.twitter.com/qKoRaxHRDW — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) June 27, 2025 “If Fox News wants to lie to the American people on Donald Trump’s behalf, it should face consequences — just like it did in the Dominion case,” Newsom told POLITICO. Newsom’s lawsuit seeks damages almost identical to the amount Fox News had to pay Dominion after settling its defamation lawsuit. “Until Fox is willing to be truthful, I will keep fighting against their propaganda machine,” Newsom added. POLITICO also shared a statement from the network: Fox News, in a statement, said, “Gov. Newsom’s transparent publicity stunt is frivolous and designed to chill free speech critical of him. We will defend this case vigorously and look forward to it being dismissed.” Public officials must clear an extremely high legal standard to prevail in defamation cases, as the U.S. Supreme Court established six decades ago in New York Times v. Sullivan. But the lawsuit’s filing marks a pointed escalation in Newsom’s feud with the Republican president and his allies in media. Newsom is suing in his personal capacity and has agreed to pay any possible fines or penalties from his campaign account, aides said. Any proceeds from the case to Newsom would be disseminated to anti-Trump causes. “Newsom is specifically demanding an on-air apology from Jesse Watters,” Collin Rugg wrote. “Mr. Newsom’s lawyers also sent Fox News a letter demanding a formal retraction and an on-air apology from Jesse Watters, a host who said on his show that Mr. Newsom had lied about the call with the president,” Rugg wrote, citing The New York Times. “If those conditions are met, the letter states, Mr. Newsom will dismiss the lawsuit,” he added. Rugg shared the clip from Jesse Watters’ program: JUST IN: California Governor Gavin Newsom sues Fox News for $800M, accusing the network of lying about his call with President Trump during the LA riots. Newsom is specifically demanding an on-air apology from Jesse Watters. “Mr. Newsom’s lawyers also sent Fox News a letter… pic.twitter.com/PskmgEjGnZ — Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) June 27, 2025 Per CNN: In a lawsuit filed in Delaware Superior Court, Newsom’s attorneys allege Fox News defamed him by airing deceptively edited videos and making false statements claiming the Democratic governor lied about the phone call. “Why would Newsom lie and claim Trump never called him?” Fox News anchor Jesse Watters said in one segment cited in the lawsuit. Newsom’s attorneys also noted the segment featured a chyron reading, “Gavin Lied About Trump’s Call.” Newsom’s attorneys argued the network attempted to damage Newsom’s future political prospects. “Individual viewers who heard Fox’s statement that Governor Newsom was ‘lying’ about when he last spoke to President Trump are less likely to support Governor Newsom in future elections and are less likely to support Governor Newsom’s causes or contribute to his political organizations,” the attorneys wrote.

Andrew Cuomo Makes Decision On New York Mayoral Bid Following Primary Defeat

The New York City mayoral election this November is quickly molding into one of the most intriguing races this year. Many analysts expected former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to breeze through the Democratic primary in his political comeback. However, New York State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani pulled off the upset and sent a shockwave through the Big Apple. Mamdani will square off against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who’s running as an independent, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Cuomo added another ripple to the race by deciding to remain on the ballot as an independent candidate. Report: Andrew Cuomo has decided that he will stay in the New York City Mayoral Race after conceding Democratic primary to Mamdani pic.twitter.com/qpxMUasSk2 — The Calvin Coolidge Project (@TheCalvinCooli1) June 27, 2025 Fox News reports: While he acknowledged Mamdani’s victory in the primary, Cuomo left the door open to a November run as an independent candidate, which election rules in New York State permit. “I want to look at all the numbers as they come in and analyze the rank choice voting. I will then consult with my colleagues on what is the best path for me to help the City of New York, as I have already qualified to run for mayor on an independent line in November,” Cuomo said in a statement earlier this week. Cuomo was facing an end-of-the-day Friday deadline for candidates who had already qualified to run as independents to decline that independent ballot line. The former governor will keep his place that he already secured earlier this year on the “Fight & Deliver” ballot line. But the sources said that Cuomo had not committed yet to running an active general election campaign through the summer and into the autumn. If Cuomo drops out of the race at a later date, his name will stay on the general election ballot. If Cuomo is on the ballot in November, Sliwa could potentially be a benefactor. With Democratic voters being split in at least three different directions, the Republican candidate could generate enough support for an upset victory in the general election. Former three-term New York Republican Gov. George Pataki thinks Sliwa could win because of a weak field of Democrat candidates. BREAKING: Our last great governor, @GovernorPataki, says @CurtisSliwa can win the mayoral election. The momentum is real. Let’s get Curtis elected! pic.twitter.com/CFW3t2HpvB — Sliwa for NYC Mayor 2025 (@TeamSliwa) June 19, 2025 However, not everyone agrees with that sentiment. The New York Post explained: It remains unclear whether Cuomo will actually mount an active general election campaign. Sources close to Cuomo’s camp previously said the former governor almost certainly would not. Even if he doesn’t actively campaign, staying on the general election ballot could siphon votes from Mayor Eric Adams, who will also be running on an independent line. “If Cuomo stays in the race he splits the anti-Mamdani vote and helps Mamdani,” said state Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar, a Dyker Heights resident. “He’s playing the spoiler — 100 percent. He has no chance of winning and only takes votes from Adams and Curtis,” Kassar said, referring to GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa. Lawyer Jim Walden is also running as an independent candidate in the general election.

Idaho Murders: Judge says trial will not be postponed, denies request to present theories of ‘alternate perpetrators’

An Idaho judge says he won't postpone the murder trial of Bryan Kohberger, the 29-year-old man accused of killing four University of Idaho students, and has rejected the defense team's request to present evidence suggesting possible "alternate perpetrators."
