'Did That MOOSE Just CRY FOR HELP?'

A US Army infantryman is on maneuvers at Fort Wainwright‚ Alaska when he and another soldier see an odd-looking moose. At the same time‚ something is calling for 'help!'I received the following account:"I’ve been in Alaska for more than 2 years and I’m stationed in Fort Wainwright. Every so often we go to field missions and where we go is super isolated. Me and a few guys were tasked to drive down this mountain that we are currently doing our training on and we replied “yes‚” reluctantly because we just wanted some real food rather than the MREs we have been living off of for the past few days. While two of the soldiers were ground guiding me and my battle I’ll call 'Knox‚' out of the runway‚ we noticed it started to get dark...fast. Being on that mountain is hardly ever ANY light unless it’s from the moon. But just to get a general idea‚ you could see the northern lights easily. As we drive‚ Knox is telling me he has to urinate really bad so I just tell him to pull over. As he began to pull over‚ it got extremely quiet. I felt as if someone punched me in my gut because I started to get this strong sense of something watching me and I started to get goosebumps. I took it with a grain of salt that maybe it was just the MRE making my stomach hurt and the weather making the hairs on my skin stand. But then I felt paranoid‚ and I’ve never felt this way before in the field because I’ve been here numerous times before. As he walks back to the truck I see the foliage on my right-hand side fall as if weight was being forced on it. I tap Knox’s shoulder and tell him to look in my direction. It was a moose‚ but it looked oddly skinny and the antlers just didn’t look “normal.” Our eyes got huge and he responded‚ “What the hell is that thing?”I stammered because I wasn’t too sure what it was either. He buckled up and pressed the break but we heard “Help‚” coming from the direction of the moose. My heart dropped and I felt the heat leave my face and I looked at him asking‚ “Did you hear that or was it just me?” He replied‚ “Bruh‚ I heard that.” He laughed nervously and we turned off the truck and shined our headlamps towards the moose’s direction. (We are 89B‚ so we carry our standard M4s with us in the vehicle when we are transporting ammo whether there is anything in the cans or not‚ just because it’s for our safety).Knox and I looked in the cab to just verify we had our weapons on us‚ and we did. I jumped out of the cab and he followed with our headlamps still on the moose. We walked closer and the word “help‚” was getting louder and louder. We got a few more feet closer but not extremely too close to the moose and it ran back into the wood line making me and Knox jump. We looked at each other and we were both probably thinking the same thing... “Did that moose just cry for help?”I told him I was getting cold and he agreed‚ so we paced back to the truck as fast as possible. As I closed the door‚ we heard the words “HELP‚” but louder than what it was earlier. I got that gut feeling right after I heard the words and looked into the dark wood line and saw red eyes. I gulped and told him to look but he put the truck in drive and sped off. We talked for a a few minutes about the situation and complete silence followed right after. When we got done with the mission he sped up the mountain to get back to where the rest of the company was and he didn’t say a word. He sleeps on the cot next to me and he didn’t speak to anyone about the situation. I’m a bit shaken by the situation myself.Whatever it was that called for help‚ I’m sorry I never went into the wood line." Univision's Jorge Ramos Is PAINED By Amnesty Being Left Out Of Biden Border Deal

Univision anchor Jorge Ramos‚ during an interview with U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX)‚ expressed surprise and pain over the fact that the current border deal being negotiated between the Senate and the White House contains no provision to legalize anyone in the country illegally. Here’s your periodic reminder that Univision‚ as currently constituted‚ remains an immigration-advocacy PAC with a broadcast license:  JORGE RAMOS: I want to ask you about the negotiations in Washington‚ in Congress‚ for an immigration package that‚ if approved‚ would allow U.S. aid to Ukraine. Democrats and Republicans apparently do not agree‚ and it surprises and pains me‚ Congressman‚ that at no time in the conversations is there any talk of legalizing undocumented immigrants. It appears that this has been cast aside. US REP. HENRY CUELLAR: Yes‚ I totally support immigration reform‚ I support the DREAM Act- the DREAMers‚ I support DACA‚ I support a temporary work (permit) where they can come to work‚ I support all of this‚ but you know that the Republicans who‚ right now they control the House of Representatives‚ they don't want to talk about immigration reform‚ they just want to talk about border security‚ and that is the problem we have - which for me is a complete package that we must see‚ but right now‚ very frankly‚ the Republicans control the House of Representatives‚ and they just want to talk about the border and nothing else. There were plenty of moments to choose from during this interview‚ but this one seemed the most egregious inasmuch as- and‚ again‚ this is what Univision continually chooses to indulge‚ you have Ramos injecting himself and his personal opinion into his coverage of a story.  The general purpose of this interview was to suggest that Mexico should not act to restrict northward migrant flows‚ that there really isn’t such a thing as a migrant crisis‚ and that it is awful that the border deal does not include a massive grant of amnesty. Consider this gem of a question: In the month of December‚ 300‚000 people entered illegally from Mexico into the United States. This‚ for many‚ is unsustainable. The question is whether there is a crisis at the border and whether you have a solution. If 300‚000 illegal entries isn’t proof evident of a crisis‚ then what is? Rep. Cuellar goes out of his way to explain how the border is overwhelmed‚ without actually saying the word “crisis”.  This is what passes for serious talk on immigration at Univision. Click “expand” to view the full transcript of the aforementioned interview as aired on Univision’s Al Punto on Sunday‚ January 28th‚ 2024: JORGE RAMOS: This week‚ a bipartisan group of legislators met with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to talk about the border. One of those legislators was Democratic Congressman Henry Cuéllar of Texas. Congressman Cuéllar‚ thank you for being here with us again on the program. US REP. HENRY CUELLAR (D-TX): Thank you‚ Jorge. RAMOS: You met this week with the president of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador‚ and many are asking whether Mexico should become the immigration police of the United States and its waiting room‚ that is‚ whether the border should not be controlled in Mexico.  CUELLAR: Well‚ first of all…Mexico should not do the work for the United States‚ point number one. But point number two‚ we know that when we talk about immigration‚ it is something that together‚ the United States and Mexico‚ must work together as partners‚ yes. But to just do the work for the United States‚ no. RAMOS: What‚ then‚ should Mexico do for the United States? Because the program known as "Remain in Mexico" was implemented during President Trump's administration and then under President Biden. Should this continue? CUELLAR: First- Mexico has more people working in immigration than we have Border Patrol. Point number one. They spend billions of dollars doing this security or immigration‚ a lot of money‚ they said that right now they are putting people who do not qualify on deportation planes to Venezuela and other countries. Mexico knows that right now many people are entering‚ and they are taking their steps to control the border they have with Guatemala. RAMOS: Congressman‚ let me jump to the border where you are‚ which you know better than anyone. In the month of December‚ 300‚000 people entered illegally from Mexico into the United States. This‚ for many‚ is unsustainable. The question is whether there is a crisis at the border and whether you have a solution. CUELLAR: The system we have right now cannot handle the large numbers of people we are taking in. This is something - there is no doubt that we cannot handle those big numbers. That is the problem we have with immigration. Regarding security‚ it is important to note that when we talk about crime‚ crime on the border is lower than in many parts of cities‚ than in other parts of the nation‚ that’s because some colleagues of mine often put crime and immigration together‚ but it is important to note that they are two different issues‚ but they get lumped together from time to time. JORGE RAMOS: I want to ask you about the negotiations in Washington‚ in Congress‚ for an immigration package that‚ if approved‚ would allow U.S. aid to Ukraine. RAMOS: Let me jump in and we'll end with this about - about the race that seems to indicate that it's going to be Donald Trump against President Joe Biden. The polls suggest‚ Congressman‚ that Joe Biden this year‚ contrary to what happened four years ago‚ is losing in the polls and the perception of some voters‚ in accordance‚ again‚ with the numbers‚ is that President Biden is a weak president- politically and physically. What is your perception and what is your plan to win? RAMOS: Well‚ we hope that President Biden wins again. I look at the polls‚ there is still time‚ but this- we can‚ -- the president can take the steps to win‚ because he is going to win‚ but it is in some areas‚ starting with immigration‚ where the Democrats and President Biden are (polling) very low‚ where the American public wants to have practical solutions for what we are seeing here at the border. RAMOS: Congressman Henry Cuéllar‚ thank you very much for speaking with us. CUELLAR: Jorge‚ my pleasure.

Jay Leno files for conservatorship over wife's estate amid her dementia battle

Jay Leno filed for a conservatorship over his wife’s estate as she continues to battle dementia. On Friday‚ Leno filed for conservatorship over the estate of Mavis Leno at Stanley Mosk Courthouse in Los Angeles‚ California. “Unfortunately‚ Mavis has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years‚” the petition for the conservatorship states‚ according to NBC News. “As Mavis’s current condition renders her incapable of executing the estate plan‚” the petition continues. “Jay has petitioned the Court to be appointed conservator of Mavis’s estate for the sole purpose of filing a petition for substituted judgment on her behalf in order to ensure her desires concerning the disposition of her assets upon her death are realized.”The filing says she is incapable because she "suffers from dementia‚ a major neurocognitive disorder.""Jay is fully capable of continuing his support for Mavis’s physical and financial needs as he has throughout their marriage‚" the documents read. The court documents state that Leno seeks to create a trust for their joint estate that would "ensure Mavis has managed assets sufficient to provide for her care" should he die before her.Leno‚ 73‚ claimed to have always handled the couple's finances since they married over 43 years ago. The celebrity couple do not have any children. Leno's estate plan would also provide financial support to Mavis's brother – who is "her sole living heir aside from Jay.""The conservatorship estate will not be funded with any assets and is being established for the sole purpose of filing a petition for substituted judgment to ensure Mavis’s estate plan is established and that Mavis’s future care is provided for under the terms of a living trust‚" the documents say. The filing does not reveal when the 77-year-old Mavis was first diagnosed with dementia. A doctor's report included in the court documents‚ dated Nov. 28‚ 2023‚ describes how dementia has affected Mavis. The doctor wrote‚ "It is my professional opinion that‚ due to her condition‚ Mavis is unable to meaningfully participate in the hearing on the Petition to Appoint a Probate Conservator nor would she understand the nature‚ force or effect of the hearing should she attend."The doctor also noted that Mavis "lacks the capacity to give informed consent to any form of medical treatment."The comedian and talk show host reportedly began the conservatorship process in November. There will be a hearing on April 9.Like Blaze News? NASA Wants to Put a Massive Telescope on the Moon

NASA Wants to Put a Massive Telescope on the Moon

As part of the Artemis Program‚ NASA intends to establish all the necessary infrastructure to create a “sustained program of lunar exploration and development.” This includes the Lunar Gateway‚ an orbiting habitat that will enable regular trips to and from the surface‚ and the Artemis Base Camp‚ which will permit astronauts to remain there for up to two months. Multiple space agencies are also planning on creating facilities that will take advantage of the “quiet nature” of the lunar environment‚ which includes high-resolution telescopes. As part of this year’s NASA Innovative Advance Concepts (NIAC) Program‚ a team from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center has proposed a design for a lunar Long-Baseline Optical Imaging Interferometer (LBI) for imaging at visible and ultraviolet wavelengths. Known as the Artemis-enabled Stellar Imager (AeSI)‚ this proposed array of multiple telescopes was selected for Phase I development. With a little luck‚ the AeSI array could be operating on the far side of the Moon‚ taking detailed images of stellar surfaces and their environments. The proposal was made by Kenneth Carpenter and his colleagues at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). Carpenter is the Hubble Operations Project Scientist at GSFC and the ground system scientist for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (RST). As they note in their proposal‚ NASA’s return to the Moon offers several significant opportunities for him-impact scientific research. Not the least of these is the potential for creating observatories that take advantage of the “radio quiet” environment and extended periods of darkness on the far side of the Moon. Artist’s illustration of a radio telescope inside a crater on the Moon. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech Due to the tidally locked nature of its orbit‚ where one side of the Moon is always facing toward Earth‚ the Moon’s day/night cycle lasts for 14 days. This means a “lunar day” consists of two weeks of continuous sunlight‚ while a lunar night consists of two weeks of continuous darkness. At the same time‚ the Moon’s airless environment means that any observations by optical telescopes will not be subject to atmospheric interference. This makes the far side of the Moon a pristine environment for conducting high-resolution interferometric imaging‚ a method where multiple telescopes collect light to look for patterns of interference. Astronomers extract data from these patterns to create a detailed picture of celestial objects that are difficult to resolve with conventional telescopes. This same technique allowed the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT)‚ a global network of radio telescopes‚ to acquire the first image of a black hole ever taken. According to the team‚ a lunar interferometry array has immense scientific potential and could be built incrementally to limit construction costs: “This can resolve the surfaces of stars‚ probe the inner accretion disks surrounding nascent stars and black holes‚ and begin the technical journey towards resolving surface features and weather patterns on the nearest exoplanets. A fully developed facility will be large and expensive‚ but it need not start that way. The technologies can be developed and tested with 2 or 3 small telescopes on short baselines. Once the technology is developed‚ baselines can be lengthened‚ larger telescopes can be inserted‚ and the number of telescopes can be increased. Each of these upgrades can be accomplished with minimal disruption to the rest of the system.” Despite these advantages‚ the team notes how previous studies on interferometers in space concentrated on designs for free-flying arrays. This was largely due to the 2003-2005 NASA Vision Missions Studies that examined the trade-offs between free-flying space concepts and kilometer-sized interferometers built on the lunar surface. The study concluded that it was better to pursue space-based free-flyers‚ given the absence of pre-existing human infrastructure on the lunar surface that could provide power and regular maintenance. Illustration of NASA astronauts on the lunar South Pole. Mission ideas we see today have at least some heritage from the early days of the Space Age. Credit: NASA However‚ with the Artemis Program‚ Carpenter and his team argue that this situation is now changing. With the completion of surface habitats‚ transportation‚ drilling‚ and power facilities planned for the coming years‚ now is a good time to investigate the possibility of building interferometers on the lunar surface. “Our study of a lunar surface-based interferometer will be a huge step forward to larger arrays on both the moon and free-flying in space‚ over a wide variety of wavelengths and science topics‚” they write. “It will determine‚ given the current and anticipated state of our space technology and human exploration plans‚ whether it is better to pursue designs for the lunar surface or for deep space.” They further envision that a lunar interferometer will lead to advancements in astrophysics‚ like the study of stellar magnetic activity‚ the nuclei of active galaxies‚ and the dynamics of cosmological phenomena on many scales. The design and construction of such a facility will address key engineering concerns‚ like the best way to incorporate variable-length optical lines‚ the best configurations for the telescopes‚ and the optimal mirror size for meeting both technical and scientific goals. They also hope to create a plan for maintaining and expanding the facility over time using a mix of human and robotic support. Beyond that‚ the anticipated benefits include technical advances that will enable a UV-optical interferometer and space-based missions capable of imaging black holes (similar to the EHT)‚ searching for biosignatures‚ and directly imaging rocky exoplanets around other stars. Carpenter and his colleagues also anticipate that the creation of a major facility on the Moon‚ in conjunction with the Artemis Program’s human exploration goals‚ will generate tremendous public interest and engagement: “Finally‚ this effort will make people dream again – and remember that we can do great things‚ even in [the] face of difficult times. Our study will help keep the focus on the grandeur of the Universe and what humans can do if they work hard together. Our project will excite generations of future Science‚ Technology‚ Engineering‚ Art‚ and Mathematics (STEAM) workers‚ who will be inspired by this bold vision.” Further Reading: NASA The post NASA Wants to Put a Massive Telescope on the Moon appeared first on Universe Today.
