Nashville Band Goes Viral For Having A Band Member Dedicated To Grilling, Throwing Hot Dogs To The Crowd
“What instrument do you play?” “Oh, I’m on the grill.”
These days, to stand out as a band, it certainly helps to have a shtick. Talent and good songs are always gonna reign supreme, and will be what keeps you around, but it doesn’t hurt to have something that can get you noticed. It could be something as simple as dance moves like Charley Crockett that get you noticed, combined with his killer vocals, or you could pull a Lainey Wilson and empower young women with her Cowgirl of the Night segment. No matter what it is, having something on stage or during your performance outside of your music will make you stand out among fans and leave a lasting impression on the minds of those who are not familiar with you.
A Nashville-founded band called Arts Fishing Club won a (hypothetical) award for uniqueness at their recent Charleston show. The group hit the stage at The Boogieman Festival in the South Carolina low country recently and made a lasting impression on their guests. Not only did they look sick on stage in full dad get-up —tucked-in collared shirts and cargo shorts, complete with tall white tube socks —but they also had an additional band member who gave their set some added flavor.
Next to their guitar player, where you might traditionally see a keyboard player, they had a band member manning a different kind of board—a grill.
Who needs Guy Fieri when you have this guy?
The whole dad outfit and grilling vibe feel very Midwestern, and although this group might have come together in Nashville, the Midwestern theory isn’t too far off, since the band’s founder, Christopher Kessenich, is originally from Appleton, Wisconsin.
As the band rocks onstage, their auxiliary grill master is hard at work, flipping dogs, then wrapping them in tin foil before tossing them out into the crowd. GENIUS. The foil not only keeps the hot dogs from potentially burning the fans, but if it fails to be caught, a fan still has a perfectly clean dog to consume.
If more bands did this during their shows, not only would they avoid overserved fans, but it would also be a fast-track route to getting Entertainer of the Year.
Arts Fishing Club, you’re onto something here. Check it out:

Never give up on your dreams, kids… If you want to be in a band but can’t play an instrument, this grill master position is what you need. As you can imagine, the comments left on this video are pure gold. Check out some of my favorites:
“King Glizzard and the Glizzard Wizard.”
“‘Is mayonnaise an instrument?’ Yes.”
“Finally, an instrument I can play.”
“Drummer: Can Steve be in the band? Singer: Does he play? Drummer: No, but can make a mean hot dog! Singer: He’s in.”
“Thin Glizzy.”
“Now THAT is good crowd work.”
“This screams ‘Midwestern’ band, I don’t even have to Google where they’re from.”
“Definition of ‘let them cook.'”
“Is no one me mentioning their outfits are literally dad outfits??”
“Red Hot Glizzy Peppers.”
“I can’t play an instrument but finally I can be in a band.”
“Why isn’t this at every concert? 10/10.”
“My dream date. Cute.”
“Immediately saved to the ‘hell yeah’ folder.”
“Dad rock has a new meaning.”
“Dream concert for real.”
“Get them at Coachella.”
The hot-dog-throwing band member fits the groovy, modern-day dad-rock sound they possess.
