Democrats Flip Miami Mayor's Office for First Time in Nearly 30 Years

Miami has a new mayor, with former County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, a Democrat, beating Republican Emilio González, a former city manager endorsed by President Donald Trump. The run-off election result upsets the status quo in the South Florida city, which had not elected a Democratic mayor in nearly three decades. Florida has largely swung red in recent decades, but Miami has been seen as bluer, being home to many immigrant communities. That has changed in the past few years, with President Donald Trump seeing gains among those communities in the 2024 presidential election.

Miami elects first woman mayor, marking first win by Democrat in 28 years

Democrats can now add a major city in Donald Trump's home state — and one set to host his future presidential library — to its list of off-cycle election wins. In a Tuesday runoff, Miamians elected Eileen Higgins as mayor, the first woman in the city's history to hold the job and the first Democrat in 28 years. Higgins, a former county commissioner, defeated Republican Emilio González, an ex-city manager who had the endorsement of Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis, with 60 percent of the vote. "Miami chose a new direction," Higgins said during her victory speech at the Miami Woman's Club. "You chose competence over chaos, results over excuses and a city government that finally works for you."

Democrat wins Miami mayoral race for first time in nearly 30 years, marking major GOP loss

Democrats have taken control of Miami for the first time in nearly 30 years after candidate Eileen Higgins clinched the city's mayoral election. Higgins, 61, beat out Trump-backed Republican Emilio Gonzalez in the Florida city's runoff Tuesday night and will become the city's first Democratic mayor since 1998, as well as the city's first-ever woman mayor. "Tonight, the people of Miami made history," she said in a statement after the results were announced. The victory is an upset for GOP lawmakers across the country, who rallied behind Gonzalez as the election became seen as a test of voter reaction to President Trump's first year of his second White House term.

Wikipevil?

Wikipedia is "Wokepedia," complains Elon Musk. That's because it's become so left-wing. "It's designed to push an ideological agenda that you can't see," says journalist Ashley Rindsberg in my new video. He runs "Neutral Point of View," a Substack publication that exposes Wikipedia bias. "So what if it's biased?" I ask. "It's just one website." "Wikipedia's information spreads into everything online," he replies, "ChatGPT, ... Siri, Alexa. Ask a question, it is all Wikipedia."

Probing Trump's Verbal Attack on Somalis

In a disparaging attack on Somalia in which he said he didn't want people of Somali descent in the United States, President Donald Trump said Somalis "ripped off" Minnesota "every year" for "billions of dollars," an apparent reference to a fraud investigation, and suggested that "like 88%" of Somalis receive "welfare" benefits. But the White House didn't provide us with evidence for either of those figures. Trump was at least partly referring to a recent news report that said the vast majority of people federal prosecutors have charged since 2022 with committing three fraud schemes targeting social service programs in Minnesota are members of the state's Somali community.

Inside the Pentagon's Scramble to Deal With Boat Strike Survivors

The Pentagon was in a bind. The military had plucked two survivors from the Caribbean Sea in mid-October after striking a boat that U.S. officials said was carrying drugs, and it needed to figure out what to do with them. On a call with counterparts at the State Department, Pentagon lawyers floated an idea. They asked whether the two survivors could be put into a notorious prison in El Salvador to which the Trump administration had sent hundreds of Venezuelan deportees, three officials said. The State Department lawyers were stunned, one official said, and rejected the idea. The survivors ended up being repatriated to their home countries of Colombia and Ecuador.
