Three Takeaways From Bill Gates's 5,784-Word Warning on AI: 'There Is No Plan'

Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates issued a stark warning about AI's risks to employment and the human condition, saying that companies were barreling ahead with the technology with no larger plan for the massive upheaval it would cause. "Even under the best circumstances, the transition to this new AI era will be one of the most turbulent times in human history," he wrote in a 12-page essay published to his personal website Wednesday. "Right now, we are not preparing for it. I don't see evidence that leaders, experts and communities are confronting the challenges adequately."

Trump plan to raise borrowing limit on shaky ground as debt roils bond market

President Trump's plan to raise the debt limit through the end of his presidency before Republicans likely lose control of Congress is on shaky ground because of rising concerns over the national debt — which has reached $40 trillion. The president is quietly pushing Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to use a third budget reconciliation package to extend the debt limit through 2029 — the end of Trump's term — to avoid the prospect of a difficult negotiation with Democrats next year if they win control of the House or both chambers of Congress.

FDA approves landmark pancreatic cancer drug that's shown to improve survival

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved a groundbreaking new drug for the most common form of pancreatic cancer, offering U.S. patients a more effective treatment against one of the deadliest types of cancer. FDA officials gave expedited approval to the first-of-a-kind pill, called daraxonrasib, that blocks a mutated protein that fuels tumor growth in more than 90% of pancreatic cancer cases. It's an approach that previously eluded drugmakers for decades. The daily pills will be sold by Revolution Medicines under the brand name Rasonque.

The Price of Diesel, the 'Workhorse' of Fuels, Nears a Record High

When Randy Madden saw the way diesel prices were rising, he decided to delay purchasing the fuel that powers his 3,000-acre farm in Iowa. Except prices are at around the same level as when he made that decision in May. Now, going into harvest season, he expects to spend more than $40,000 on fuel — roughly double what he typically pays from late summer through the end of the year.

Public Health Advocates Are So Desperate for Help Against Conspiracies They've Turned to the Place You'd Least Expect

Last month's Senate grilling of Dr. Anthony Fauci, if viewed by an audience that had not been subjected to years of propaganda, would be staggeringly strange. There were hissing accusations of lies, corruption, and megalomania; comparisons to sadistic Nazi scientists; and statements, as if of undisputed fact, that Fauci killed millions of people. The nation's most powerful Republicans, without any significant pushback, joined forces to shout down and criminally pursue the face of the COVID pandemic's health authority based on wild, speculative, and facile conspiracy theories. It all prompted a kind of deeply existential question: If this is how we now treat a onetime pandemic hero, what will happen the next time we face a similar public health crisis?...
