A Los Angeles-bound American Airlines flight, operated by SkyWest Airlines, made an emergency landing shortly after take-off due to the pilots fearing someone was attempting to break into the cockpit. The pilots lost contact with the flight crew and heard banging on the cockpit door. “All of a sudden, we started banking around the city of Omaha. And, you know, you’re tilting the wings and everything,” a passenger traveling with his wife and seven-year-old daughter told CNN. “My wife noticed that the stewardess was kind of banging on the cockpit door, like, OK, what’s going on?” he added. I guess nobody knew what was happening, so it was probably a good thing,” Gruver said. The Embraer ERJ 175 regional jet parked away from the terminal with two firetrucks surrounding it, a photo showed. “After landing, it was determined there was a problem with the inter-phone system and the flight crew was knocking on the cockpit door,” the FAA said in a statement. SkyWest confirmed a problem with “a flight crew mic,” Tuesday, adding “we apologize for the inconvenience.” The flight finally took back off for Los Angeles nearly five hours late, according to FlightAware. We have to figure out what’s going on.” The plane, an Embraer ERJ 175, was only 40 miles into the 1,300-mile journey when the mishap unfolded, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.

Sportscaster and former “Today” show cohost Bryant Gumbel was reportedly rushed to the hospital in New York City. He said that part of his lung was removed during an operation as part of his aggressive treatment. Gumbel was a staple on the NBC morning show for 15 years from 1982 to 1997. He was also a longtime host of HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” until the show ended two years ago. His older brother, Greg Gumbel, died in December 2024 at the age of 78 after battling pancreatic cancer, one of the most deadly forms of the disease. The elder Gumbel was a renowned sports broadcaster. During his storied career, he was a permanent fixture at all March Madness tournaments and called two Super Bowls.
