Trial begins for assistant principal when 6-year-old brought gun to Virginia school, shot teacher

A former assistant principal of an elementary school in Virginia is facing eight counts of felony child neglect in connection to a 6-year-old student who brought a gun to school and shot his teacher. Her criminal trial begins on Monday. Ebony Parker was the assistant principal at Richneck Elementary School in Virginia when the student shot Abby Zwerner in January 2023. Zwerner spent two weeks in the hospital and had six surgeries. She survived but no longer has full use of her left hand, WFMJ reported. Parker is charged with eight counts of felony child neglect, a count for each of the eight bullets that were in the gun the student brought to school...

Why law enforcement fears new 'ghost gun' bans won't stop the surge

Over the past several years, Democratic states have increasingly moved to crack down on "ghost guns," unserialized firearms assembled from kits or homemade parts that are difficult for law enforcement to trace and have become the focus of gun control efforts. Earlier this month, Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) included legislation in her latest budget barring 3D printers from having the software that allows ghost guns to be printed. Additionally, in April, Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) approved sweeping gun control legislation banning ghost guns in Virginia, following similar efforts in California, New York, and New Jersey...

The Hidden 'Tax' That's Bleeding Your Wallet Dry

Americans may be paying a hidden "lawsuit tax" through higher insurance premiums and higher prices for everyday goods, as trucking companies face rising litigation costs from staged crashes, massive settlements and "nuclear verdicts." Industry groups and lawsuit abuse critics told the Daily Caller News Foundation that costs from frivolous lawsuits and rising settlements are being passed down to consumers through elevated insurance premiums, higher transportation costs and inflated prices for everyday goods. They argue those costs are especially hitting the trucking industry, where rising commercial insurance premiums can ripple through freight rates, grocery bills, consumer goods and even personal auto insurance premiums...

Jackson protests as Supreme Court uses Louisiana gerrymandering ruling to instruct lower courts

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson protested the Supreme Court's decision to use their recent ruling in a Louisiana gerrymandering case to instruct lower courts on how to define the Voting Rights Act, a move that could wipe out previous legal victories for voting rights groups. The Court on Monday sent a Mississippi case back down to U.S. District Court "for further consideration" following their ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which rejected race-based gerrymandering. "This case presents only the question of Section 2's private enforceability, which our decision in Louisiana v. Callais … did not address," Jackson dissented, referencing Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. "Thus I see no basis for vacating the lower court's judgment."...

America's Spiritual Revival Just Sent A Powerful Message

Thousands of believers gathered in the nation's capital on Sunday for an all-day prayer and worship service honoring America's Christian heritage ahead of the country's 250th anniversary. The event — Rededicate 250, part of the Trump administration's Freedom 250 initiative — featured a host of political, Catholic, and evangelical leaders, including Speaker Mike Johnson, Secretary Pete Hegseth, Bishop Robert Barron, and Franklin Graham, who did not hold back in condemning what he described as America's moral decline. "People have become lovers of themselves rather than lovers of God,"...

Trump drops lawsuit against IRS amid talks of establishing a $1.8 billion fund for allies

President Donald Trump is dropping his $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service, according to court documents, a signal that the administration is preparing to go forward with a plan to set up a $1.8 billion fund that would compensate those who believe they were subject to unfair investigations under previous administrations. Monday morning's court filing did not provide any details of a settlement. Rather, it noted that the case was still in a very preliminary phase. Trump's lawyers said that meant that he did not need to ask for permission to dismiss the case nor did the IRS need to consent to the dismissal. The filing said he was dismissing with prejudice, which would foreclose his ability to try to bring the case again.

Nearly half of Americans anxious about finances amid frustrations with Trump's handle on economy: Poll

Nearly half of Americans have anxiety about their finances at the same time as they have frustrations with the economy under President Trump, according to a new poll. In the CBS News/YouGov poll, 44 percent of respondents said they see their "own personal financial and economic situation" as either "fairly bad" or "very bad," while 49 percent said they see their personal financial and economic situation as "very good" or "fairly good." Seven percent of respondents said they are unsure about their personal financial and economic situation.

Mamdani Announces First City-Owned Grocery Store Will Open Next Year

New York City's first city-owned grocery store will open in the Bronx neighborhood of Hunts Point next year, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Monday, making good on a high-profile campaign promise to expand the role of government in the Big Apple. The mayor's plan includes five city-owned grocery stores, one in each borough. He previously announced the city's first location set to be at La Marqueta in East Harlem in Manhattan, with hopes to open the store by 2029. The new store will be within Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (D., N.Y.) district — a staunch defender of the government grocery plan.

US government missing out on up to $250B in cost savings due to unimplemented recommendations: GAO

The U.S. Government Accountability Office finds the federal government could unlock up to a quarter-trillion dollars in savings if lawmakers and agencies act on the GAO's outstanding recommendations aimed at reducing waste and improving efficiency. In a new report released in May, the GAO estimated that addressing its open recommendations "could produce between $132 billion and $251 billion in measurable financial benefits," underscoring what it describes as a persistent gap between identified reforms and actual implementation.

Supreme Court sends closely watched Native American voting rights decision back to lower court

The Supreme Court acted in a Voting Rights Act case brought by Native American tribes on Monday, saying a closely watched ruling needs to be reconsidered after the high court weakened the Civil Rights-era law. The justices ordered lower courts to take another look at the decision that went against the tribes and undercut a key enforcement mechanism: lawsuits from voters and advocacy groups. Advocacy groups are key players because they bring most of the lawsuits filed under the provision of the Voting Rights Act known as Section 2.
