It’s been a long time coming. 2026 has already been a huge year for Cody Johnson, and it’s only getting better from here. In case that wasn’t enough, the “Dirt Cheap” singer finally gave fans what they’ve been asking for after two years of waiting. View this post on Instagram Discussing “Fool Proof” with Billboard upon the announcement of Banks of the Trinity, Johnson would offer up high praise to the Grammy-winning siblings and note that he pushed his band to tailor the track around the duo and lean into their signature sound — before they even agreed to join him on the track. “I could just hear that funky groove. It just screamed Brothers Osborne. There’s not a Brothers Osborne song out there that I don’t like. I’m a huge fan, and they’re both really great guys, and I wanted them on it. So I told my band in the studio, ‘Listen, I don’t know if they’re going to be on it or not, but I really want to make this Brothers Osborne-esque.’ And then we finally heard back that they had time to do it. It was the icing on the cake for that tune.” What results is an incredibly fun heartbreaker penned by long-time Eric Church collaborator, Jeff Hyde, along with Jason Scott and Jared Conrad. Clearly leaning into Brothers Osborne’s signature swampy and electric guitar-driven sound, “Fool Proof” comes out of the gate firing and never lets up. Grappling with a heartache, the trio find themselves drowning their sorrows at the bar in the chorus. Using some solid wordplay throughout the entire song, the hook finds them lamenting on the fact that they don’t make liquor “fool proof” as they sit alone at the bar. “She says I ain’t got a shot, but I’m sittin’ here with two I can’t stop falling off the top of good ole Mountain Dew They oughta make the bottle a little harder to get into But they don’t make that liver killer, corn mash, brown liquor Black label, loudmouth soup Fool proof” Overall, “Fool Proof” is exactly what you’d want from a collaboration between Johnson and the Osbornes. Leaning into both of their strengths, primarily both T.J. Osborne and Johnson’s sultry vocals, the track shines as a rambling heartbreaker.
