Mysterious Director’s Cut of The X-Files: I Want to Believe Coming to Disney+

News The X-Files Mysterious Director’s Cut of The X-Files: I Want to Believe Coming to Disney+ Director Chris Carter claims this is the version of the movie he always “intended” to make By Matthew Byrd | Published on May 19, 2026 Screenshot: 20th Century Fox Comment 0 Share New Share Screenshot: 20th Century Fox In a surprise press release, Disney has confirmed that they will be adding Chris Carter’s director’s cut of The X-Files: I Want to Believe to Disney+ on June 11. The specifics of this version of the movie are somewhat mysterious. It has long been reported that Carter wasn’t entirely satisfied with the version of 2008’s I Want to Believe that was released in theaters. He apparently battled the studio and censors over the film’s graphic content, which led to numerous scenes being cut or altered. “I made it too scary, basically, and I was told so by the brass at Fox, and they wanted a PG-13 movie,” Carter said during a 2025 interview on the Fail Better with David Duchovny podcast. “So we cut it back to be a PG-13 movie, and we thought, ‘Okay, we’ve satisfied their demands.’ The critics, the people who rate the movies, said ‘No, it’s not a PG-13 yet, you’ve got to cut it back even farther.’ I can tell you that you can do more on network television, [the censors] are more permissive than they are for the movies.” Interestingly, the I Want to Believe DVD did include an “Extended Cut” of the movie. However, that version of the movie only included a few minutes of new footage which likely wouldn’t have affected the original movie’s rating much. Besides, to hear Carter tell it, this is a version of the movie that he only started working on recently. “Now I have a chance to go back and make the scary movie that I always intended,” Carter explained during that podcast interview. “It’s not just doing a director’s cut to do a director’s cut. It’s really kind of bringing to life something that for me was on the page and never got to the screen.” We don’t know the extent of the changes Carter intends to make to the film in this cut, but the prospect of a “rescued” version of the movie is certainly intriguing. Unlike the generally acclaimed 1998 X-Files movie, I Want to Believe is a largely standalone story that essentially functions as an extended Monster of the Week episode. The format was an advantage in some ways, though the final product sharply divided most fans, with many siding with the more negative critiques that called the movie disjointed, unnecessary, and underdeveloped. However, the film has always had fans who praised its standalone nature and Se7en/The Silence of the Lambs-like tone. It’s not clear if Carter would be able to seriously address some of the film’s more substantial structural issues. It seems much more likely that he’d be able to expand upon the grim nature of the original movie, though, which was certainly hindered by the film’s numerous cuts and eventual PG-13 rating. The good news is that we won’t have to wait long to see if this version of the film puts the sometimes-forgotten second X-Files movie back in the conversation.[end-mark] The post Mysterious Director’s Cut of The X-Files: I Want to Believe Coming to Disney+ appeared first on Reactor.

Read an Excerpt From The Heart of the Nhaga by Lee Young-do

Excerpts Epic Fantasy Read an Excerpt From The Heart of the Nhaga by Lee Young-do A tale of castles built on the backs of flying mantas, giant birdmen, and heartless immortals. By Lee Young-do | Published on May 19, 2026 Comment 0 Share New Share We’re thrilled to share an excerpt from The Heart of the Nhaga by Lee Young-do, a Korean epic fantasy novel translated by Anton Hur—publishing with Harper Voyager on June 2nd. Three handles one.The world is divided by the Line of Limit. To the north are the Tokkebi—fire people able to manipulate flames as both weapons and illusions; Rekon—giant birdmen with immense strength and warrior acumen; and the humans—as divided as the other races are unified. To the south are the Nhaga—a reptilian people who relinquish their hearts for immortality. For centuries, the races didn’t cross that line, but change is in the air. A Nhaga is being sent North… and a trio is being dispatched to make sure this agent from the South makes it out alive—one from each race. But the illusion of a simple journey is quickly dispelled by the fact that the Tokkebi is merely a scholar, not an adventurer; the Rekon is deathly afraid of water; and the human hunts and eats Nhaga. And when the Nhaga they’re supposed to be escorting out of the Kiboren forest is murdered, the one sent in his place turns out to very much have a heart—meaning he’s quite vulnerable to the dangerous exodus. The four must quickly forge an alliance and shed the distrust and prejudice that plagues them if they are to survive. And just as crucial, they must figure out what this mission is actually about, because unbeknownst to them, the very fate of the world might rest on this one Nhaga making it to the North intact. 1 Rescue Mission When the humans brought a bit of the day into the darkness of the night with their torches and lamps, a fragment of the night lost its place and cowered at the edges of the light. A Tokkebi grabbed that fragment of night and pulled it into the artificial day. By gaining that fragment, he gained the five daughters of the night: Chaos, Seduction, Imprisonment, Concealment, and Dreams. With their help, the Tokkebi built a castle. There was a reason they did this, a very Tokkebi-like reason. They thought it would amuse them. Chaos decided the interior of the castle while Seduction decided the exterior. Imprisonment installed various dead ends, mazes, and traps, while Concealment created secret tunnels, hidden doors, and passwords. It was unknown how the fifth daughter contributed to this fortress. Dreams was very different from her sisters. The night wanted to hide and conceal and cover up, but Dreams wanted to uncover, discover, and open, which made her somewhat similar to the day. But she couldn’t be seen during the day and was visible only at night, like the stars. Even without the prospect of Dreams’s mystery contribution, the fortification of Jumunuri was strange enough. Only the lord of the castle knew precisely how many floors, rooms, corridors, and stairs Jumunuri had. There were, of course, a few facts known to those who visited the castle often. For example, the fourth floor could be reached only by going up to the seventh first, or turning three corners at any point of the castle would always lead you into the great hall, or if you stood at the top of the eastern tower and turned leftward twice, you’d land on your behind at the lord of the castle’s library. Depending on the taste of whoever was the current lord, they would put a cushion in the landing spot of the library or a bed of iron nails or place a lit candle or two. The candles were a very Tokkebi touch, as a singed posterior would be just the right amount of expected playfulness, but could the nail bed be more than mere rumor? It seemed a touch too harsh for a Tokkebi. But no one was sure of the truth. But the Jumunuri’s head of the sentries, Sabin Hasu’un, didn’t stare out at the black sky in melancholy because he was afraid of some prickly nails. He did so because he had witnessed the lord of the castle walk by carrying a pail full of beetle feces just now. The falling-on-one’s-posterior-in-the-library bit was usually undertaken by the lord of the castle’s valet, Byong. But the head of the sentries had a letter he had to hand over himself. He sighed and resigned himself to a stinky fate as he turned twice. His surroundings changed into something else entirely, and he fell on his behind. What’s this? There was nothing on the landing spot! Sabin dusted off his unharmed posterior as he got up and turned toward the letter-writing table of the lord of the castle. Buy the Book The Heart of the Nhaga Lee Young-do Buy Book The Heart of the Nhaga Lee Young-do Buy this book from: AmazonBarnes and NobleiBooksIndieBoundTarget Bao Moridol, the eleventh lord of Jumunuri, held a spade in his hand as he stared at Sabin. Only when Sabin saw the pail by his feet and the pots by the window did he feel a sense of relief. “You must’ve had a good dream, my lord. Is what’s in the pail manure?” “What?” “I had assumed, my lord, that you wanted to sprinkle it on the floor…” Sabin stopped. The lord of the castle’s eyes had flashed with inspiration. “Hmm…!” Sabin silently apologized to whoever had the lord’s audience after him and at the same time gleefully created a list of people in his head to tell that the lord of the castle wanted to see them at once. Who would be the best Tokkebi for this delightful honor? As he got lost in this daydream, Bao Moridol, slightly nervous, said, “What is your business?” “Well, my lord, don’t you think it’s more of a matter of how much sun those plants get, rather than manure? Because Jumunuri is so dim.” “Your business!” Sabin grinned. The lord of the castle no doubt wanted to throw him out of the room as quickly as possible to test out this new idea. He decided to cooperate with the lord. From the corner, he dragged a chair closer and sat down. “A beetle, from those Kims who shave their own heads, brought a message for you.” “The Kims called monks? But why did you come with it? What is Byong doing?” Sabin shrugged. “This is what the Kims wanted. You know how they are. How they take care of any business having to do with people they deem important.” “Remind me how they take care of them again?” “They want the fewest possible people to know their business.” “Do they, now?” “This is only what I think, but the Kims seem to believe that the more important a business, the fewer people who should know of it. A most convoluted way of thinking, is it not? One needs many people to know if they want help.” “They’re weary of meddlers, I imagine.” “If it’s truly important business, who would dare meddle?” “The Kims fill their minds with useless thoughts. But if this is what they want, we can play along for now. It’s just between you and me, then. What is the message?” “The Kims have asked us to dispatch a Tokkebi.” “For what?” “They are assembling a rescue mission to go below the Line of Limit. They want a Tokkebi to be a part of the mission.” The lord of the castle looked intrigued. He was also aware that his head of the sentries, who respected the lord of the castle very much, liked to prank his lord and spent most of the hours of the day thinking of ways to do it. These pranks were a source of much mirth for Bao. Sabin Hasu’un detected scores of opportunities to prank his lord over the course of a day, barely executing a tenth of them. Which was why the lord enjoyed baiting his head of the sentries, provoking him to act. However, Sabin seemed serious this time. Bao said, “The Kims want to bring a Nhaga up north past the Line of Limit? For what?” “That’s the mystery. They refuse to say. Their tendency toward secrecy, I assume.” “As are the other members of the mission?” “Ah, they disclosed that part. The Kims seem to follow an old saying, how ‘Three handles one.’ There’s a Kim and a Rekon in the company as well.” “How amusing! What are they offering?” “Two hundred in gold.” “Astonishing. It makes me want to go myself. What? Why are you making that face?” “There’s no special reason. Just the expression of a head of the sentries pondering over whom to throw his support behind as the next lord of the castle.” Bao chuckled enough to satisfy his head of the sentries and said, in a more serious tone, “Then whom shall we send?” This was surprising. “You want to send someone? That ‘three handles one’ business is just old nonsense. No ragtag band of a rescue mission can withstand the murderous forces of the Kiboren jungle. They’ll be massacred in no time. I do not think there is any hope for them, my lord.” “Why not?” “Because of ignorance, mostly. Who knows anything about Kiboren or the Nhaga?” “That Kim would know.” “Pardon?” “That Kim—the one they’re sending on this mission. I’ve a feeling I know who it is. There’s only one who knows enough about Kiboren and the Nhaga to lead such a mission.” “There is such a Kim?” “Kagan Draca.” Sabin knew who this was. A wrestler who had scored a legendary win against a phalanx of Tokkebi champions. “He’s still alive?” “Alive and well. He hunts Nhaga for breakfast at the Line of Limit.” Sabin tried to smile. Surely this was a joke the lord of the castle was making, albeit a cryptic one. But Bao did not look expectant of a smile. “Hunts them for breakfast?” “Exactly that. He hunts them. And then eats them.” Sabin mimed cutting a piece of meat with utensils and eating. The lord of the castle nodded. Sabin’s face turned blue. “Is he… insane?” “Well, they say he’s an excellent cook.” “Oh… I see.” The lord of the castle entwined his fingers and placed them on his knee as his face took on a pensive look. “Kagan despises the Nhaga. Enough to hunt them down. That’s why he does what he does. Ambushes them near the Line of Limit. Chops them up. And eats them.” Sabin gulped. “I think hating someone enough to hunt them down and eat them is less of an example of staying true to one’s principles and more of a symptom of mind sickness.” “Well. He does have a good reason for doing it. You know very well that Nhaga are diffcult to kill, as they have no hearts.” “Is that why he, ah, chops them up? So they do not regenerate? But still. Isn’t the eating part somewhat… excessive?” “It’s a waste of perfectly good meat otherwise.” Now Sabin wondered if it was his lord of the castle who was indeed insane. Bao waved his hands at him. “No, no, that’s what Kagan would say. I’ve asked him the same question, and that was his answer. But there are other reasons. Hmm. One moment.” He opened a drawer, rummaged through it, and took out an old parchment scroll. “A letter Kagan sent me about six years ago. Read it.” Carefully taking it from him, Sabin started to read. Peace be unto you, this is Kagan. We haven’t spoken in a while. As you can imagine, weapons are easier to come across in this wasteland near the Line of Limit than paper would be. A peddler I came across yesterday happened to have some pages of parchment, which is how I am writing to you now.I thought about what you bade me to do in your last letter. But I’ve concluded that I cannot stop what I am doing now. Yes, I am still eating Nhaga. There’s no need to put terrible words onto paper, but I also find no need to talk around it.Have you heard of the tiger hunters of Kitaljer? When a tiger hunter in Kitaljer is eaten by a tiger, the dead hunter’s son becomes the son of all the other hunters. They teach that son everything they know. When the son is ready, he goes out to hunt tigers with the other hunters. And when they catch one, they cut it open and feed its liver to the son.I am the son that survived, my lord. The Nhaga have swallowed everything that was precious and meaningful to me aside from this worthless body of mine. So I eat them. Maybe someday, I shall be the one eaten by them. I try not to cross the Line of Limit, but in pursuit of another stumbling Nhaga, I sometimes find myself inside their jungle forest. When I realize I’ve given up my one advantage over the Nhaga, it makes me feel the cold of the jungle forest just like them, even as the winds of the jungle sizzle on my skin. I hastily make my way back up north, but just a few days later, I find myself under the line again. And then, one day, when I can no longer swing my Baragi against my enemies, I shall die. I do not care if you see it as the death of a madman and forget me accordingly.I do not think there is any other destination for me than insanity. Beneath these words was not a signature but a strange symbol. When Sabin lifted his head, the lord of the castle said, “It’s the insignia of the Kitaljer hunters. The black lion and the dragon.” “The black lion and the dragon?” “‘Kagan’ and ‘draca,’ respectively, in Kitaljer hunter language. Both were killed off by the Nhaga. That’s where he gets his name.” “Ah. So that’s not his real name?” “No. But I can’t tell you his real name without his consent.” Bao took back the letter and returned it to his drawer before he faced his head of the sentries once more. “So. What do you think?” “So this… wrestler exacts revenge on the Nhaga using the methods of Kitaljer hunters who disappeared hundreds of years ago? Which is to murder and eat their enemies?” “Rather succinct, but yes.” “What did they do to that Kim to drive him to such mad revenge?” “A terrible thing.” Sabin waited, but the lord of the castle did not elaborate. The lower-ranked Tokkebi was about to nod in unspoken understanding when he happened to glimpse a change in his lord’s face. Bao looked stricken. “A most terrible thing indeed.” Sabin couldn’t help but ask. “What deed, my lord?” Bao sighed and shook his head. “It’s the same as his real name. I cannot tell you without his consent. In any case, you see how this friend would understand the Nhaga and Kiboren better than anyone else? A predator naturally knows much about their prey.” “That may be true,” said Sabin uneasily, “but I would much prefer to enter such a place with companions who have their wits about them. What if this Kim gets tired of his regular meals of Nhaga and decides to add some Tokkebi to his diet for variety?” This was not a joke, but Bao laughed heartily. “Don’t you worry about that. Kagan’s rage is directed exclusively at the Nhaga. He is capable of no other rage at this point.” “How could you be sure of that?” “Look at what he’s written. He’s got nothing to lose now. The Nhaga took everything. This may sound like nonsense, but for anyone who isn’t a Nhaga, Kagan may be the safest person to be with in the world. Because he can’t get angry at anyone or anything else.” “What a sad state that is.” “Truly. A sad state. And it’s the truth. I can guarantee Kagan is safe for everyone else.” Sabin found it difficult to agree. But he also couldn’t find it in him to disagree out loud. There were many things one didn’t need to do to the lord of the castle at Jumunuri and one of them was to argue the logic of the lord. Sabin changed the subject back to the matter at hand. “If the champion Kagan is indeed safe, and at the same time eats Nhaga for breakfast, he is indeed the perfect someone to send someone with into Kiboren. Will you send someone?” “‘Three handles one.’ And they need a Tokkebi to make three. So I shall send someone.” “Who?” He thought on it. “No one has the qualifications for this sort of thing. There isn’t a single Tokkebi who knows anything about the Nhaga or Kiboren. Which means all Tokkebi are equally eligible. There’s no need to think too much about it, then. I shall send whichever Tokkebi enters this room next.” “…. The very next Tokkebi?” “Precisely.” If they’d been outside Jumunuri’s walls, Sabin Hasu’un would’ve gently ignored the lord of the castle’s words just because the lord of the castle had uttered them, and it wouldn’t have passed for disobedience. Sabin also knew that the lord of the castle wasn’t very wise. Both he and Bao knew this didn’t affect his great respect for his lord. But here, inside these walls, he had to obey the words of the lord of the castle. Sabin didn’t bother to ask any more questions. He did manage a short complaint, though. “May I wait with you for that? If I leave here, I’m afraid I may inadvertently become that very Tokkebi.” The lord of the castle chuckled. And so, the two of them began their wait. They didn’t have long. Shortly, a very angry Tokkebi appeared in the middle of the room and fell on his behind. At the sight of the head of the sentries, he shouted, “You! Are you trying to steal my work from me? Then from this day forth, I shall be the head of the sentries, by the name of the God That Kills Himself! Do you yield?” The lord of the castle’s valet Byong Srabble loved his work. Sabin considered it his downfall in this case and shook his head. Bao grinned. “That won’t do. Because you, Byong, are to be dispatched on a rescue mission.” Byong blinked as he considered Bao’s words. “A rescue mission?” “Yes. You have to go into a place no one has gone into for several hundred years. And rescue someone.” Excerpted from The Heart of the Nhaga, copyright © 2026 by Lee Young-do. Ohio Secretary LaRose Continues to Fend Off Dems on Voter Data

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose continues to defend his decision to send voter data to the federal government despite increased Democratic opposition. LaRose has been complying with a directive from the Trump administration’s Department of Justice to hand over statewide voter registration lists to identify and remove ineligible voters from the rolls. The data includes names, addresses, driver’s license information, and the last four digits of Social Security numbers—information that the federal government already can access. “They don’t like it when I call out what they’re actually doing. There’s nothing wrong that happened,” LaRose told The Daily Signal on Tuesday, adding that Democrats are playing on the public’s concern about potential data leaks. LaRose argued that such fearmongering is “voter suppression.” “They’re creating fear among registered voters for their own political gain,” he said. “What they’re doing is creating fake outrage, when there shouldn’t be any, which causes people to say, ‘Well, maybe I shouldn’t register to vote because my data is going to be given away.'” The Ohio secretary of state has recently drawn the ire of Rep. Shontel Brown, D-Ohio, with back-and-forth posts on X, as well as an angry letter from the congresswoman. On May 13, Brown co-authored a letter with Committee on House Administration ranking member Joe Morelle, D-N.Y., which was signed by the other Democratic members of Ohio’s congressional delegation. “The information requested included highly sensitive information such as driver’s license and Social Security numbers,” the letter begins. “Election officials in both Republican- and Democratic-led states have rightfully met these demands with warranted skepticism, and most states have declined these demands in order to protect their voters. The DOJ has sued states for not complying. “Transferring this data goes far beyond publicly available information and exposes Ohioans to unnecessary risks, including misuse, unauthorized access, leaks, and identity theft, without any clear safeguards or accountability.” The letter was not only shared on Brown’s congressional website, but also in a thread on X. That thread was in response to LaRose reacting to the letter in a video message. A formal response to that letter is in the works, with lawmakers requesting one by May 29. Ohioans, read the letter here: https://t.co/iGSwzFqszz— Rep. Shontel Brown (@RepShontelBrown) May 13, 2026 LaRose told The Daily Signal in previous conversations that sharing voter roll data is “the right thing to do,” and that the DOJ has authority to access it under the Voting Rights Act. “If you look at this at its most basic level, I followed the federal law and exchanged data,” LaRose said. As for other states refusing to comply with the DOJ, LaRose said some have laws preventing data sharing. LaRose added that handling “all kinds of sensitive information” is “what they do” at the DOJ. “The U.S. Department of Justice is a trustworthy entity when it comes to maintaining the security of data, and this is data that is mostly all public record to begin with,” LaRose said. Rep. Shontel Brown’s office did not return The Daily Signal’s request for comment.

Trump Admin Slashes Burdensome Regulations for State Education Reform

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—The Department of Education is slashing federal regulations that could hinder states from improving their schools, the administration’s latest move in its dismantling of the agency and its effort to return education policy to the states. The Education Department has approved Education Flexibility applications for the states of Florida and Illinois, meaning they now can waive statutory or regulatory requirements for school districts without first having to submit those waivers to the federal government for review and approval. A total of 18 states have now opted into the program that seeks to give state and local education departments more authority over efforts to reform schools. The department also sent guidance to all chief state school officers that grants them freedom to move federal funds between programs, to better meet state and local needs. Small, rural schools will also gain more flexibility to use funds how they see fit. The letter builds on guidance that the department sent to states in July encouraging chief state school officers to implement existing statutory flexibilities and seek waivers from burdensome statutory and regulatory provisions. Kirsten Baesler, assistant secretary for the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, called this a “bold step forward in strengthening states’ ability to fully harness the flexibilities already at their fingertips in support of better serving students, families, educators, and communities.” “With a record 18 states now taking advantage of Ed-Flex authority, we urge state leaders to build on this momentum by adopting forward‑leaning strategies that move decision-making closer to the classroom and elevate the power of local leadership,” she said.

AP Fact-Checker Condemns Trump For Celebrating Demise Of Climate Alarmism He Cited

Associated Press science writer Seth Borenstein traveled over to the fact-checking section on Monday to condemn President Trump for taking a victory lap on behalf of all people who do not subscribe to theories of apocalyptic climate change after the United Nations’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ruled a 2011 study’s “worst case scenario — called RCP8.5 — was implausible.” The problem for Borenstein was that in 2026, he said Trump was ignoring other, more likely scenarios, but in 2011, he willingly went along with the worst-case scenario. Trump posted on social media, “GOOD RIDDANCE! After 15 years of Dumocrats promising that ‘Climate change’ is going to destroy the Planet, the United Nations TOP Climate Committee just admitted that its own projections (RCP8.5) were WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!”” Borenstein began his reply, “Trump was referring to a set of projections from 2011 from a group of scientists associated with the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that were updated in a study published in a scientific journal this spring. The update found that the old worst case scenario — called RCP8.5 — was implausible.” He also wrote, “Even when it was created 15 years ago, that worst case scenario was unlikely — there were other scenarios that were considered more likely. But the most extreme scenario was still possible if the world went on a fossil fuel heavy binge, in particular continuing to use coal, the most dirty fossil fuel, in a big way. It projected an end of the century warming of about 8 degrees Fahrenheit (4.5 degrees Celsius) compared to the mid 1800s.” However, 15 years ago, Borenstein wrote, “The report does say scientists are ‘virtually certain’ — 99 percent — that the world will have more extreme spells of heat and fewer of cold. Heat waves could peak as much as 5 degrees hotter by mid-century and even 9 degrees hotter by the end of the century.” Sure, Borenstein said temperatures “could” rise nine degrees by 2100, but the words “implausible,” “unlikely,” and “worst-case scenario” do not appear anywhere in his 2011 article. Borenstein wants to condemn Trump for what he himself did. American Enterprise Institute climate policy researcher Roger Pielke Jr. summarized the problem: Tens of thousands of research papers have been — and continue to be — published using these scenarios, a similar number of media headlines have amplified their findings, and governments and international organization have built these implausible scenarios into policy and regulation. We now know that all of this is built on a foundation of sand. Pielke also disagrees with Borenstein’s characterization as a worst-case scenario. Instead, he argued it was “characterized as ‘business as usual.’” Pielke also notes that SSP3-7.0 has also been retired, which predicted a roughly six-degree Fahrenheit increase. The problem for Borenstein is that even if he is right and Pielke and Trump are wrong about RCP8.5’s demise, there is still the fact that, according to alarmists, New York City was supposed to be overwhelmed with floods in 2015, milk was supposed to be $12.99 per carton (it was $3.39), and gas was supposed to be over $9 a gallon (it was $2.75). Perhaps Borenstein should look back at those predictions instead.

Nazi-linked Maine Democrat Graham Platner sexualizes — porta-potties?

The Democratic Party's best chance to unseat longtime Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) is in the midst of yet another scandal tied to his old social media posts.Graham Platner, the Marine veteran who is all but guaranteed to win the Democrat Senate primary in Maine on June 9 now that Gov. Janet Mills has bowed out, made other posts on Reddit that have raised eyebrows.Platner 'is someone whose instincts appear crude, reckless, and deeply unserious.'Under the now-deleted username "P-Hustle" — which, according to Fox News, he has previously acknowledged as his — Platner strangely sexualized porta-john visits and graffiti. These posts are not unearthed, offhand comments from decades ago. What Happened To Lars Mittank, The German Tourist Who Vanished Near A Bulgarian Airport?

What began as a carefree Eastern European vacation ended in a family’s worst nightmare and a mystery that endures to this day. Lars Mittank, a 28-year-old from Berlin, Germany, joined his friends on a holiday to Bulgaria in 2014 but never made it back home. Years later, he was dubbed “the most famous missing person on YouTube,” as an airport security video of his last known sighting spread across the internet. He has never been found, despite millions of people viewing the Lars Mittank video online. Lars Mittank disappeared in Bulgaria at age 28. Moments before boarding his flight back home, Mittank fled a busy airport in Varna. Suffering from a head injury he had sustained during a fight a few days back, he disappeared into the forest surrounding the airport, never to be seen again. Lars Mittank has been missing for more than six years, and despite some compelling leads and his mother publicly pleading for information, the case appears no closer to being solved than it did the day he vanished. Lars Mittank’s Trip Darkened By A Bar Fight Lars Joachim Mittank was born on February 9, 1986, in Berlin. At age 28, he joined a handful of his school friends on a trip to Varna, Bulgaria. There, the group stayed at the Golden Sands resort on the Black Sea coast. At one point during the trip, Lars Mittank found himself involved in a bar fight with four men about which soccer club was better: SV Werder Bremen or Bayern Munich. Mittank was a Werder supporter, while the other four supported Bayern. Mittank left the bar before his friends did, and they allegedly didn’t see him again until the next morning. Svilen Enev/Wikimedia CommonsLars Mittank was staying at the Golden Sands resort in Varna, Bulgaria, before he disappeared. When Mittank finally turned up at the Golden Sands resort, he informed his friends that he had been beaten up. Different friends offered different accounts, which in turn featured different details. Some told authorities that Mittank was beaten by the same group of men he clashed with inside the bar, while others claimed that the men had hired a local to do the job for them. Regardless, Mittank walked away from the incident with an injured jaw and a ruptured eardrum. He eventually went to see a local doctor, who prescribed him 500 milligrams of the antibiotic Cefprozil to prevent his wounds from becoming infected. He was also told to stay behind while his friends headed home because of his injury. ‘I Don’t Want To Die Here’ YouTube still/Missing People CCTV FootageCCTV footage from the Bulgarian airport where Lars Mittank disappeared in 2014. Mittank’s friends offered to delay their return until he healed up, but he urged them not to and scheduled a later flight. He then checked into a hotel near the airport, where he began exhibiting strange, erratic behavior. Hotel cameras captured Lars Mittank on video, hiding inside the elevator and leaving the building at midnight only to return hours later. He called his mother and whispered that people were trying to rob or kill him. He also texted her, asking about his medication and to block his credit cards. On July 8, 2014, Mittank entered Varna Airport. He met with the airport physician to check up on his injuries. The doctor told Mittank he could fly, but Mittank remained anything but at ease. According to the physician, Mittank looked nervous and asked him questions about the medication he was taking. The airport was undergoing refurbishment, and during Mittank’s consultation, a construction worker entered the office, Mel Magazine reported. Mittank was overheard saying, “I don’t want to die here. I have to get out of here,” before getting up to leave. After dropping his belongings on the floor, he ran down the hall. Outside the airport, he climbed over a fence, and once on the other side, he disappeared into a nearby forest and was never seen again. Why Mittank’s Fate Remains A Puzzle With Many Missing Pieces Facebook/Findet Lars MittankA flier seeking information on Lars Mittank’s disappearance still circulates on social media. According to Dr. Todd Grande, a certified mental health counselor who covered Lars Mittank’s disappearance on his YouTube channel, Mittank had no history of mental illness. A popular theory is that Mittank was looking for an excuse to run away and start a new life. Dr. Grande’s speculation on first break psychosis. Grande doubts this, however, because Mittank was on good terms with his loved ones. His friends offered to reschedule their flight so he didn’t have to fly back alone, and he texted his mother throughout the trip. Mittank also didn’t take anything with him when he fled, leaving his passport, phone and wallet at the airport. Another theory holds that Mittank was involved with some kind of criminal enterprise that neither his loved ones nor authorities knew about — drug trafficking, perhaps. While this theory would explain why Mittank was never found, there’s little evidence to support it. Yet another possibility is that Mittank really was killed. While staying behind in Bulgaria, he told his mother that he was being followed. Many online sleuths suspect that the men he fought with at the bar were still after him. If they were in pursuit, it could explain why Mittank ran away. It also could explain why no one ever found his body. Were The Pursuers All In His Head, As The Lars Mittank Video Suggests? A fourth theory holds that Mittank could have been under the influence of drugs around the time of his disappearance. A lot of people believe the Cefprozil, the antibiotic which Mittank had been prescribed to treat his ruptured eardrum, possibly combined with another substance, might have led to him suffering a psychotic episode. Strange as it sounds, it’s not impossible. Dizziness, restlessness and hyperactivity are listed as common side effects of the drug. On top of that, studies suggest that acute psychosis could be a “potential adverse effect” of some antibiotics. This could explain how the behavior of someone with no history of mental illness could’ve changed so suddenly. If Mittank was suffering from psychosis, the Cefprozil he was taking may have not even been its direct cause. In his video, Dr. Grande proposes Mittank may have experienced “first break psychosis” or the “onset of something like schizophrenia.” This, he argues, would explain his paranoia, delusions, and anxiety. It could also explain the bizarre behavior displayed in the Lars Mittank video on YouTube. While Dr. Grande thinks that the psychosis theory is the most convincing of the bunch, he stresses that it does not explain why Mittank ran away or why his body was never found. The Odds Are Against Mittank Being Found At This Point Twitter/Magazine79 Lars Mittank’s mother continues to seek leads on her son’s disappearance to this day. Despite years of investigation from the BKA, Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office, Mittank remains missing to this day. Every now and again, an internet troll, amateur sleuth, or concerned citizen who watched the Lars Mittank video claims to have seen him somewhere in the world. Every year, around 10,000 people go missing in Germany alone, and although 50 percent of all missing persons cases are resolved within less than a week, less than 3 percent are actually found within a year. Lars Mittank has been missing for more than six. In 2016, police in Porto Velho, Brazil, picked up a man with no identification and, apparently, no idea who he was. Once an image of the man recovering in a hospital circulated on social media, online sleuths noted that he had similar features to Mittank. The man was later identified as Anton Pilipa, of Toronto. He had been missing for five years. In 2019, a truck driver claimed to have given Mittank a ride out of Dresden. The driver picked up a hitchhiker as he was leaving for the City of Brandenburg. On the way, he could not help but notice the passenger’s resemblance to Lars Mittank. The lead went nowhere. His mother has appeared on countless television and radio shows over the years as well, desperately trying to solve the mystery of Lars Mittank’s disappearance. Her pleas to find her son have been aired on both German and Bulgarian channels, but never produced any results. Undaunted, she continues to post messages on social media. A Facebook group 41,000 people strong called Find Lars Mittank also regularly posts and, apparently, design and post fliers in locations around Europe, all in an effort to find the world’s “most famous” missing tourist. After reading about the puzzling disappearance of Lars Mittank, learn about 12-year-old Johnny Gosch’s mysterious 1982 disappearance. Then, explore the bizarre, continuing mystery of the Dyatlov Pass incident, in which nine Russian hikers died mysteriously. The True Story Of The Sundance Kid, The Fastest Gunslinger In Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch

Public DomainHarry Alonzo Longabaugh, a.k.a. the Sundance Kid, in 1900. In the late 19th century, Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch terrorized the Old West, carrying out the longest string of bank and train robberies in American history. Aside from Cassidy himself, perhaps none of the outlaws was as infamous as the Sundance Kid. His real name was Harry Alonzo Longabaugh, and he’d worked as a wrangler and ranch hand before turning to a life of crime. He earned his nickname after he was convicted of stealing a horse in Sundance, Wyoming, in 1887. It was the first and only time he was ever arrested. In 1901, with the Pinkerton National Detective Agency on their heels, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid fled to Argentina. They tried to start a profitable ranch there, but they soon resorted to their criminal ways. It’s widely believed that the two outlaws were killed in a shootout with Bolivian authorities in 1908, but no physical evidence has ever officially linked the men to the scene. In fact, there are rumors that the Sundance Kid eventually returned to Utah, where he spent the rest of his life as a law-abiding citizen. This is the true story of the notorious Sundance Kid. How Harry Alonzo Longabaugh Became Known As The Sundance Kid Harry Alonzo Longabaugh was born in Pennsylvania in 1867, but he traveled west at age 15 to help his cousin establish a homestead in Colorado. As a teen, Longabaugh worked as a wrangler, learning valuable lessons about horses, guns, and life on the frontier that would aid his later criminal career. Longabaugh seemingly had no intention of becoming one of history’s most infamous outlaws. He tried to make an honest life for himself in his 20s, drifting from ranch to ranch across Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota. But in late 1886, a hard winter struck the region, and Longabaugh was laid off. Crook County MuseumSundance, Wyoming, circa the late 19th century. The following year, he stole a gun, horse, and saddle from a cowboy near Sundance, Wyoming. Longabaugh was soon captured, and he spent the next 18 months in jail, where he earned the nickname “Sundance Kid.” After his release, the Sundance Kid once again found work as a ranch hand, but by then he learned that there was a more lucrative life out there — even if it wasn’t strictly legal. Butch Cassidy And The Wild Bunch At some point in the 1880s, the Sundance Kid met Butch Cassidy and joined his gang of outlaws. In addition to Cassidy and Sundance, the Wild Bunch mostly consisted of Elzy Lay, the “Tall Texan” Ben Kilpatrick, William “News” Carver, “Deaf Charley” Hanks, George Sutherland “Flat-Nose” Curry, and Harvey Logan, better known as Kid Curry. Public DomainFive members of Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch in 1900. Left to right: the Sundance Kid, “News” Carver, the Tall Texan, Kid Curry, and Butch Cassidy. Together, these bandits robbed countless banks and trains across South Dakota, New Mexico, Nevada, and Wyoming. When they weren’t carrying out heists, the Wild West outlaws hid at the remote Hole-in-the-Wall Pass in Johnson County, Wyoming. The men became notorious in the press for their bold and successful hold-ups. The Sundance Kid gained a reputation as the best shot and fastest gunslinger of the group. But strangely enough, there’s no evidence that he ever killed anyone during the Wild Bunch’s reign. Still, the outlaws’ heists were so successful that the Union Pacific Railroad hired the Pinkerton National Detective Agency to track them down. With the authorities on their heels, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid decided to leave the country. They were joined by Etta Place, a rumored sex worker who had become Sundance’s lover. Public DomainA 1901 portrait of Harry Alonzo Longabaugh and Etta Place. The three of them fled to Argentina, where they purchased a 15,000-acre ranch and attempted to make a lawful living. But it wasn’t long before they were back to their old ways. The Death Of The Sundance Kid By 1905, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were back at it. That year, two English-speaking robbers — widely believed to be the former Wild Bunch members — held up a bank in Río Gallegos, Argentina. A few months later, the men struck another bank in the town of Villa Mercedes, making off with 12,000 pesos before fleeing across the Andes and into Chile. Etta Place soon grew tired of life as a fugitive, and the Sundance Kid took her back to the United States in 1906. While he was gone, Butch Cassidy found work in a Bolivian mine, and Sundance joined him when he returned. Public DomainAn 1894 mugshot of Butch Cassidy, taken at Wyoming Territorial Prison in Laramie. It seemed as if the men may have finally settled into an honest life, but yet again, it wouldn’t last. In November 1908, two American bandits attacked a man carrying the payroll for another mine. They were tracked to a boarding house in San Vicente, Bolivia, and several soldiers and law enforcement officials soon surrounded the residence. A shootout ensued. As the story goes, after hours of fighting, a scream was heard from inside, followed by two shots. When the police entered the house, they found two men with multiple bullet wounds. Each of them had been shot in the head. They were thought to be Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It seemed as if Cassidy had shot Sundance to put him out of his misery after he was lethally wounded and then turned the gun on himself. Bolivian authorities buried their bodies in a nearby cemetery, but at the time, there was no real way to officially identify them. Indeed, a rumor emerged that the Sundance Kid was still alive and well, living in Utah under the name William Henry Long. “Long” died in November 1936, and in 2008, his remains were exhumed and tested against known descendants of the Longabaugh family. There was no match. After the release of the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford, a man came forward claiming to be the son of Harry Alonzo Longabaugh and Etta Place. His name was Bob Longabaugh, and he insisted that his father had actually died in 1957. “I know this for a fact,” Bob told The Montana Standard in 1971, “because I was there. I was a pallbearer.” 20th Century FoxPaul Newman (left) and Robert Redford (right) in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. However, no evidence to support Bob Longabaugh’s assertions was ever uncovered. So, if the Sundance Kid didn’t die in Utah, was he actually killed in Bolivia after all? That’s not clear, either. Scientists searched the cemetery in San Vicente in 1991 in an effort to locate the graves of the men who died during the 1908 shootout. However, they were unable to find any DNA that could be linked to the relatives of Cassidy and Sundance. As such, the true fate of the Sundance Kid remains a mystery to this day — but his legacy as one of history’s most notorious outlaws lives on. After reading about the true story of the Sundance Kid, look through these photos that reveal what life was like on the American frontier. Then, go inside the story Black Bart, the Wild West’s “gentleman bandit.” The post The True Story Of The Sundance Kid, The Fastest Gunslinger In Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch appeared first on All That's Interesting.

‘Graveyard’ Of 5,000-Year-Old Mummified Penguins Found In Antarctica Baffles Scientists

Steven EmslieMany of the 5,000-year-old penguins in were remarkably well preserved. Rapidly melting polar ice caps have revealed that thousands of years ago, there was a thriving penguin community in the Antarctic that has since been reduced to a “graveyard” of frozen mummies. According to Live Science, an Adélie penguin colony was discovered frozen in the ice at Cape Irizar, which is located south of the Drygalski Ice Tongue on the Scott Coast of Antarctica in 2016. Prior to this discovery, researchers did not think that penguins inhabited this stretch of land in the Antarctic. Because the penguins died and were then frozen in ice, they were found in remarkable condition. Some of the dead chicks still had intact feathers on them. What was most surprising, however, was that some of the carcasses that were found toward the surface of the excavation site appeared to be “fresh.” There was also an abundance of penguin chick bones and excrement stains, which implied that the site was being used as a breeding ground fairly recently. But that couldn’t be possible, lead researcher of the subsequent study Steven Emslie asserted. According to his study, which was published in the journal Geology, there are no records of penguin colonies living in this area since the early 20th century. “In all the years I have been doing this research in Antarctica, I’ve never seen a site quite like this,” he said. Steven EmslieThe fossilized bones of Adélie penguins. The graveyard encompasses at least three separate breeding sites that are marked by old pebble mounds, which is a typical find in penguin mating areas. The team used radiocarbon dating to determine the age of the mummified penguins, which appear to date back at least 5,000 years. An analysis of the bones, feathers, eggshells, and other soft tissue also suggested that penguins occupied the site for breeding purposes at least three different times over the millennia. The last breeding period likely ended sometime around 800 years ago at the beginning of the Little Ice Age, possibly due to either increasing snow levels at the location or other factors. Emslie and his team remained puzzled over why some of the ancient penguin corpses were in better condition than others. Emslie has supposed that this was likely caused by the conditions of the cape’s environment, which may have gone through different periods of climate change over the last thousand years. “This recent snowmelt revealing long-preserved remains that were frozen and buried until now is the best explanation for the jumble of penguin remains of different ages that we found there,” he said. Steven EmslieAdélie penguins are believed to exist only on the Antarctic coast. The Ross Sea territory of Antarctica is one of the most productive marine ecosystems in the Southern Ocean. The region, which encompasses Cape Irizar, supports nearly one million breeding pairs of Adélie penguins every year. However, there have been increasing reports about the region’s rapid snowmelt due to global warming. According to data compiled by NASA, Antarctica’s ice mass has been steadily declining since 2002. Based on the Arctic Sea ice minimum, which reaches its lowest every September, Arctic ice is declining at a rate of 12.85 percent per decade. It’s important to note that what’s happening in the Arctic significantly impacts the rest of the world, which is why climate scientists have kept a watchful eye on the conditions there. For one thing, the drastic imbalance between rising temperatures in the Arctic and the middle latitudes of Earth may trigger unexpected conditions in the upcoming colder months in North America. PixabayAntarctica’s melting ice caps are affecting weather conditions around the world. “We would expect to see a big atmospheric effect this coming fall and winter due to all that extra heat which has gone into the Arctic Ocean because the sea ice is reduced,” said Jennifer Francis, a senior scientist at Woodwell Climate Research Center in Massachusetts. She added that “we should see weather conditions become more persistent, more long-lived — whether it’s dry, wet, hot, or cold.” Next, read about how penguins are pooping out so much laughing gas that it’s wreaking havoc on the environment. Then, take a look at the earliest observations of penguins from a century-old Antarctic journal that rocked the science world.
