“Tapping out” is part of the graduation ceremony for Airmen when they complete Air Force Basic Training. Known as boot camp, basic training is the first step when a recruit joins the military. The graduating recruits must stand at attention until family or close friends tap their shoulders or wrap them in a hug. It can be a very emotional experience for Airmen and their families. Before giving the tap, Kayla’s mom had a few inspiring words to say. The rules of tapping out meant that Kayla had to stand at attention, emotionless, until getting the tap. That was a Herculean task, as her mom spoke of the pride she had for her daughter. “I’m proud of you. I’m proud of who you’ve become.” As mom continued, unable to hold back her tears of pride, Kayla stood still, staring straight ahead. Although the Airman did a great job not showing facial expressions, she could not stop her tears from flowing. “You made me proud; you made yourself proud; you made your family proud. She finished, saying, “I love you so much, Airman Coke,” right before tapping Kayla out. As soon as the tap was made, Kayla dived out of frame to embrace her mom. Herons grow into large birds, but when they’re tiny, they are true terrors. When Beebs’ dad rescued a baby heron, he discovered how terrifying they can be. The man kept the small bird he rescued in a canvas bucket under a towel. That little dude lunged out from under that towel, and he meant business! Juvenile herons make it really easy to imagine that birds descended from dinosaurs. Their feathers are spikey, grey, and growing in patches. They have long, skinny necks and long beaks that resemble depictions of pterodactyls. They stay near marshy areas along riverbanks and shorelines but feed in open fields and farmland. They are a nuisance around fish hatcheries because they see “Free Fish!” signs everywhere. The average lifespan of a heron is around 15 years. The oldest recorded heron was found in Texas at around 24. Despite their large stature, herons only weigh five to six pounds. Like all birds, they have hollow bones. Herons hunt day and night due to special receptors in their eyes that aid in night vision. They are capable of sloth-like slowness when searching for food but fast as lightning when hunting. Herons can use their long, flexible neck to strike prey like snakes.
