‘Small-town guy’ shares how he was able to reboot his life, even in his late 50s

So often, people place time limits on their ability to change their lives as they age. The truth is, reboots can happen all the way until the end. Whether it’s finding new love in your 90s or starting a new business in your 50s, anything is possible regardless of age. Helping to illustrate this is a 59-year-old man named Richard. In a Reel posted to Facebook, he was asked the following question by William Rossy, who goes by Sprouht on social media: “What is the one thing that you put a lot of importance on when you were younger, and as you got older, you realized wasn’t actually that important?” Richard pauses for a few seconds, truly taking in the question. His answers are thoughtful and concise. In retrospect, while there were things he wished he had changed earlier, he found it was never too late. Rossy explains that Richard is about as “low-key” as they come, offering advice that could easily help everyday people. He writes in the clip’s description: “Richard spent decades working a day job, retired in his 50s, and started his own business shortly thereafter. He went from living in poverty to making ends meet, raising a family, going through a divorce, and finally finding happiness with his current wife plus a side business that he built fully online.” Mistakes, regrets, and secrets Rossy introduces the viewer to the central premise of the video: “I’ll be asking a 59-year-old about biggest mistakes, most painful regrets, and secrets to living a more fulfilling life.” He also reiterates that while many guests on his show tend to be high-profile, Richard isn’t: “He’s a small-town guy who worked a corporate job for decades, decided to retire a few years ago, and soon after realized he needed to do a little bit more to live out the rest of his life on his own terms. And he did.” Richard, after being asked what it feels like to be 59, shares that “it’s a lot of life behind me. But I like to look forward rather than back.” As he approaches his 60th trip around the sun, Richard notes that “it’s just a number” and that, fittingly, his new business is called “Kid for Life,” which reflects what he wants for his customers. Positive mindset But how did Richard arrive at the life he now leads? It started with a positive mindset. “Every single day you get out of bed, you can choose to get out on the left side or the right side. And I choose to get out on the right side. I think it’s a choice,” he says. “I think things in life happen to people that bring them down and put them into a negative mindset. But I think every single day, it’s a choice how you want to proceed with the day.” Richard describes a simple childhood filled with love and freedom. But that doesn’t mean those things can’t still exist today. “I think a lot of older people get this jaded view that things are getting worse,” he says. “I think in a lot of ways, things are getting better. The technology we have, a lot of older people get scared by it. I like it. I like embracing it and learning about it.” His parents gave him invaluable advice as a child that later helped him reinvent his life: “They said you could do anything if you put your mind to it. They raised a household with a lot of love and they worked hard for all of us. And that actually passed down to my brother and my sister and me.” “Just don’t get stuck” He encourages even those who didn’t have as inspiring an upbringing as he did. “Work hard at it. Just don’t get stuck, or get ‘unstuck’ from what you’re doing,” he says. “For anybody to be stuck in a job they don’t like, I would just say go looking for something that you do love. And you love to do it, day in and day out, and it’s no longer work when you do that.” Richard did this for himself. He explains that because of his math skills, he settled into a successful career as an actuary. But when he retired, he didn’t feel he had fully accomplished his dreams. “I always had a dream of starting my own business. And so I did!” he says. “Honestly, if I had to do it all over again, I probably would have quit and started my own business a little sooner. It takes courage to do it. And looking back, I would say I didn’t have the courage to just up and quit and start my own business.” So Richard took the bull by the horns. He wanted to travel and work for himself, so he made a career out of it: “My wife and I had the goal of traveling, and have been blessed to do a lot of that. And when we’d come back, we’d create designs on T-shirts. And the beautiful thing about it is we could take that business anywhere. We sell mainly through Etsy. Our store is called ‘Kid for Life Designs.’” “Humility file” He jokes that when he looks back at the T-shirt designs, he isn’t impressed, but that didn’t stop him from pushing onward: “They were just downright terrible. I call it my ‘humility file.’ Whenever I’m feeling too good about myself, I go back to that folder. If you’re not selling something you’re passionate about, it’s not gonna work.” When Rossy asks if that mantra applies to life in general, Richard believes it absolutely does: “I live by a principle to make other people happy. I mean that’s pretty fulfilling. For them and for me. I was so lucky and blessed to have the support of my wife and my family through it all. No one ever told me I couldn’t do it. I think that’s a nice thing when you’ve surrounded yourself with people who aren’t negative. To me, a person can work hard, but there’s no such thing as a self-made man or self-made woman. It takes a community. It takes a lot of love and support.” It’s here that Rossy asks what differentiates Richard’s first marriage from his second. Richard places much of the responsibility on himself: “A lot of it falls on me. When you’re young, I think you have a lot of pride. You have a lot of selfishness that you carry around with you. As I look back, I wouldn’t have been as prideful and as selfish. And we all carry that around our whole lives. We have one person to live with for sure, and that’s us. As you get older, I think you work through some of that stuff. You look for ways as you wake up every morning to give a little to your spouse and your family, as opposed to ‘What am I gonna do for me today?’” View this post on Instagram “Love is a choice” When asked to define love, as Rossy often does, Richard is clear: “Love is a choice that you make every single day. It’s not a feeling. It’s not an emotion. I think the world, the secular view of that, is that it is. But every single day, I choose the way I want to treat somebody. With love and kindness…or not.” When asked what he placed importance on when he was younger that now seems less important, Richard says, “I think everybody worries about what people think of them. And as you get older, you do care less about that. It doesn’t have as big of an impact on you.” While he admits that it’s usually impossible not to care about what some people think, he adds that it’s important to differentiate what truly matters: “When you’re younger, I think you care about what the wrong people think.” Rossy asks Richard to read aloud the one piece of life advice he had written earlier in a journaling session. He reads: “Look forward in life, not backward. And stay positive. When you look back, you overanalyze. You spend too much time thinking about the past. Throw yourself into what you’re passionate about. Do that day in and day out, and all of a sudden, that past is history. It gets lost.” Starting over It’s that mindset that can make it possible for nearly anyone to make even slight changes as they age. In the piece “How to Start Life Over at 50,” Maggie Wooll notes, “It’s important to remember that starting over in life will look different for everyone depending on their situation. You may be embarking on a new career path while a friend of yours is packing to move to a new continent.” Self-reflection, honesty about regrets, journaling, meditating, and taking a good, hard look at your finances are among the suggestions she makes for changing your life. She emphasizes that even small changes matter: “You can’t reach a new destination without a road map. To create a new life, you’ll need to build new habits. Developing healthy habits, like managing new job anxiety with more exercise or making plans with your family to unwind in your free time, will help you stay on your planned course. Identify your passions, strengths, and weaknesses and how they might fit into a new routine. Befriend people doing what you want to do, and look for job opportunities that match your skills and desired lifestyle. Bask in the challenges ahead because they are what makes life thrilling.” The post ‘Small-town guy’ shares how he was able to reboot his life, even in his late 50s appeared first on Upworthy.

Intriguing 1909 painting blurs the lines between old-timey self-portrait and modern selfie

Modern selfies are often met with eye rolls, despite how ubiquitous they are on social media. Context can make a difference in how people see them, of course. A selfie taken in front of a major landmark or beautiful vista might feel different to people than a photo or video in front of a mirror on a good hair day, for instance. However, the idea that someone would want to share themselves (or see others) grooming may not be as much a sign of the times as people think. Russian painter Zinaida Serebriakova’s 1909 self-portrait, titled “At the Dressing Table,” almost looks like it could have been painted today. In the painting, Serebriakova sits in front of a mirror at a vanity table filled with bottles, jewelry, and a cushion holding hat pins. Serebriakova looks directly at herself in the mirror, smiling while brushing out her long brown hair with a black comb. She wears an undergarment that is slipping off of one shoulder, giving an air of casual intimacy. Her slight eyebrow raise almost feels flirtatious. At the Dressing Table by Zinaida Serebriakova, 1909 (Public Domain) What’s the difference between a self-portrait and a selfie? Seeing Serebriakova’s self-portrait does beg the question, what’s the difference between this and someone doing a bathroom selfie or “get ready with me” video? Clearly, it takes more time and specific skill to paint than to take a photo with a smartphone, but is that the only difference? In the opinion of Arpad Kovacs, associate curator in the Department of Photographs at the Getty Museum, the selfie and self-portrait is largely a matter of replaceability and disposability, as well as careful decision-making. As he told Annelisa Stephan when asked about the difference: “The self-portrait and the selfie are two separate, though at times overlapping, efforts at establishing and embellishing a definition of one’s self. @abbieherbert Can u tell I’m really sick? Ugh this was hard #newtrend #fyp #photogenic #model #selfie #pose #trend #viral #foryou #surprise #blackandwhite #4u #fy ♬ Wrap Me In Plastic (Slowed Down Version) – CHROMANCE & Marcus Layton “Qualities like medium specificity, deeply rooted histories, and traditions (or lack thereof) that define these efforts only superficially differentiate the two. What has greater weight is the selfie’s inherently replaceable and even disposable quality. If after taking a picture of oneself the results are unsatisfactory, it is easily forgotten and replaced by a new picture. “The self-portrait, whether it is a carefully composed study or created in haste, often contains more decisions than could be easily erased. Calling a self-portrait by Rembrandt a selfie is not only anachronistic, it also negates the carefully calculated set of decisions that created the rendering.” A selfie can be a self-portrait, but not all self-portraits are selfies Kovacs pointed out that an artist could use a selfie as a self-portrait, but that doesn’t mean all self-portraits would be considered selfies. Professor Tim Gorichanaz wrote his dissertation on self-documentation, and found that the academic research offers some specific qualities of selfies: do not require strong technical skills emphasize the present moment emphasize external appearances manifest a networked sense of self are rooted in sharing, communication and consumerism may be motivated by narcissism and exhibitionism Jackie Kennedy, John F Kennedy, and Ethel Kennedy taking a mirror selfie with a 35mm camera- 1954 pic.twitter.com/uqiiHxVGtP— Things From the Past (@pastarchive) May 20, 2026 Historically, self-portraits possess the opposite qualities across the board, Gorichanaz argues. When a selfie does not match the qualities listed, it would more likely be considered a genuine self-portrait. (After all, photography is a genuine medium for self-portraits.) It seems clear that Serebriakova’s “At the Dressing Table” is a self-portrait with the feel of a modern selfie. Why ‘At the Dressing Table’ feels like a 100-year-old selfie People in the comments of a video about the painting from ArtDeco share that sentiment: “It’s so fascinating how a painting made in 1909 can look like it was painted yesterday. It literally looks like and has the feel of Instagram!” “I wonder if it’s the first get ready with me painting.” “‘It almost feels photographic’ this right here is why the painting feels like it was made yesterday and feels so striking. It doesn’t even feel like just a photo. It’s a particular style of photo, very personal, very carefree, and completely comfortable. Which only became particularly widespread with the proliferation of digital photography and phone cameras. It doesn’t just feel like a photo, it feels like a photo taken right now.” ArtDeco shared more about the painting and Serebriakova’s career and personal life in the video below. Selfie or self-portrait, the artist was definitely ahead of her time. The post Intriguing 1909 painting blurs the lines between old-timey self-portrait and modern selfie appeared first on Upworthy.

Viewers thought 100-year-old David Attenborough was finally ready to retire. They were wrong.

Viewers thought 100-year-old David Attenborough was finally ready to retire. They were wrong.

One of the most famous voices on the planet has had one heck of a career. Sir David Attenborough has been creating and narrating wildlife films and documentaries for longer than most people have been alive. His first gig, on the BBC’s Zoo Quest, took place in the early 1950s. Attenborough is now 100 years old and still going strong. His latest film, A Gorilla Story, premiered on Netflix in April 2026. Meanwhile, in his career he has won multiple Emmys and been knighted by the Queen (twice). He’s racked up dozens of honorary degrees from British universities, has multiple species of wildlife named after him, and even holds a Guinness World Record. Simply put, he has very little left to achieve, and nothing to prove. And yet, he shows no signs of slowing down. Attenborough creates perfect full-circle moment—but is not ready to call it a career A Gorilla Story is a deeply personal documentary about a family of gorillas descended from one of the first baby gorillas Attenborough ever met. In the film, Attenborough is not just the narrator and guide; he’s one of the main characters. He gets emotional at times as he reflects on one of the most profound moments of his career: meeting little Pablo the gorilla 50-some years ago. The documentary is his most personal and intimate to date as he shares his personal investment in the family of great apes. Many viewers and fans assumed that, due to his age and his choice to finally tell this intensely personal and meaningful story, that Attenborough was signaling his intent to step away. That, perhaps, A Gorilla Story would be his final film. Attenborough had other ideas. BBC just recently announced that the legendary narrator and conservationist will return to narrate the upcoming special, Blue Planet III. Attenborough says the natural world is what makes life worth living Centenarians like Attenborough are a rare breed. Only about one in 5,000 people in the United States is age 100 or older. It’s even rarer to find a centenarian who still works regularly. Doing so requires incredible passion and dedication. To Attenborough, though, it would be unthinkable to step away while his mind and body are still able to do the job: “It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living,” he has said. But it’s not just the joy and love of the planet Earth that keeps him going. Attenborough is among the most impactful conservationists of all time. A phenomenon dubbed the “Attenborough effect” even tracks real-world policy and human behavior changes in connection to his work in film. His work on the Blue Planet series, which he will return to in the third installment, has made a measurable difference in plastic ocean pollution. Fifty-three percent of people surveyed in the US and the UK revealed using less single-use plastic, a decrease that researchers contribute, at least in large part, to Attenborough’s moving narratives. His voice is beloved. People like him. They respect him. And that makes a real difference. “On the case of Attenborough, he has been reporting on scientific issues for decades, he’s won the respect of scientists, and at this age now has that kind of fatherly, stately aura,” Bill Levey, CEO of Naeco, a company that makes sustainable plastic alternatives, said in an interview with Global Citizen. Attenborough continues working because he can, and because he must. “The fact is that no species has ever had such wholesale control over everything on Earth, living or dead, as we now have,” he once said. “That lays upon us, whether we like it or not, an awesome responsibility.” The post Viewers thought 100-year-old David Attenborough was finally ready to retire. Research shows the dead giveaway that someone won’t be good at their job

Every profession has its own jargon, and in every job, some love to wield it in meetings like a jazz musician blowing a saxophone. At the same time, others prefer to speak in plain language. Those who love to pump out phrases such as, “We’re leveraging a data-driven omnichannel growth architecture to optimize cross-functional stakeholder alignment” may seem like they’re clued in to the industry. However, a new study shows there’s a good chance they’re full of hot air. Cornell University organizational psychologist Shane Littrell is an expert in BS. He actually did a study on whether you can “bullsh*t a bullsh*tter.” His most recent take-down is on “masters” of corporate jargon. He asked a big question: Do people who love using and hearing corporate jargon make better decisions than those who don’t? A man can’t handle a boring meeting. Credit: Canva Why is corporate jargon such a bad thing? Littrell refers to corporate jargon as “a semantically empty and often confusing style of communication in organizational contexts that leverages abstruse corporate buzzwords and jargon in a functionally misleading way,” he writes. “At best, corporate bullshit can sometimes seem harmless. At worst, it can disrupt organizational and employee effectiveness in numerous ways including obstructing clear communication, increasing employee disengagement, tarnishing a company’s reputation, and exposing businesses to potential financial and legal risks.” To find out whether jargon lovers are poor employees, he tested participants’ receptiveness to jargon and then their responses to a work-related decision. “The people that are the most susceptible to the corporate bullshit tended to choose the worst solutions to those problems on a consistent basis,” Littrell told The Guardian. The study also found that those who were receptive to corporate jargon scored lower on reflection, analytical thinking, and fluid intelligence. A woman getting yelled at at work. Credit: Canva This is borne out by a 2023 study by LinkedIn and Duolingo, which found that 40% of workers said they’ve had a misunderstanding because of jargon, while 61% said that those who use it have a better chance of getting ahead. This creates a negative cycle where those who make the worst decisions are elevated to positions of power simply because they speak the right language at work.  How to avoid using corporate jargon Instead of helping people understand their jobs, jargon obscures communication, harming how we read scenarios and make decisions. The study also found that it’s a real turn-off, making employees feel less engaged. Few things can separate our careers from real life like having to speak a new language when we enter the office. A meeting with the boss. Credit: Canva The key to reducing your use of jargon is to think before you speak. “Be thoughtful and mindful of your language choices. Can you say what you’re trying to communicate in a simpler way? Chances are you can rephrase to be more direct,” Communications executive Andrew McCaskill writes on LinkedIn. “This is particularly important when giving peers or employees feedback. Imagine your manager asking you to “run it up the flagpole” or to do some “blue sky thinking” and going back to your desk wondering–what on earth am I supposed to do… with THAT!?!?”  Littrell’s study is a great way of calling out those people in your office who you sensed were trying to get away with something by using flashy words. It’s also a great reminder to choose clear communication over corporate vagaries. If you’ve fallen into the jargon trap, don’t worry, Littrell says that anyone can do it. “This isn’t something that only affects people who are less intelligent,” he said. “Anybody can fall for bullsh*t, and we all, depending on the situation, fall for bullshit when it is kind of packaged up to appeal to our biases.” The post Research shows the dead giveaway that someone won’t be good at their job appeared first on Upworthy.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that as soon as Trump returns from his visit with Xi, we are now seeing movement on Cuba, while Trump is also seemingly backing off on Taiwan. This fits into my overall thesis that Trump, Xi, and Putin, have agreed to consolidate spheres of influence and stay out of each other’s yards. In order to make this happen, all nations with Deep State influence must be purged, and Cuba has been a CIA hotbed since 1959. The “Deep State” is not just corrupt US politicians, it’s a global terrorist organization that has embedded itself and overtaken nations around the world, Cuba being one of the most notable. The entire global network is being cleaned up. PRESIDENT TRUMP: We have a lot of people in Cuba. We have the CIA there. @SecRubio is from there, so we have a lot of expertise. We’re going to help the Cuban people out. We’re freeing up Cuba. pic.twitter.com/WUY08fgonW — Department of State (@StateDept) May 20, 2026 Iran's Supreme Leader has ordered that uranium must stay in Iran. — unusual_whales (@unusual_whales) May 21, 2026          President Trump has the upper hand. His best path forward is to pursue three lines of effort in parallel: Sustain the blockade and accompanying economic warfare to destabilize the regime’s hold on the state; remake the world in America’s energy dominance image to mitigate long-term price impacts while undermining China’s global ambition to defeat the United States; and order the US military to forge a path through the Strait of Hormuz to restore freedom of navigation on our terms, not Tehran’s. You might call the latter Operation Epic Passage — a combined naval and air mission of self-defense that offers escort to tankers and restores freedom of navigation, all while making clear to Tehran the devastating consequences of breaking the cease-fire. You might also call it “Blockade Plus.” Whether Iran’s oil storage completely runs out in a day or a month, Iran is no longer exporting oil — the lifeblood of its economy — or petrochemicals, steel or any other product at a level needed to keep the government afloat, banks capitalized and employees paid. The currency is in free fall, domestic prices are skyrocketing, reserves are being drained and escape hatches — sanctions evasion routes the regime typically relies upon — are getting closed soon after they open. A gasoline shortage comes next. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s Operation Economic Fury is more than just a naval blockade. Every department and agency in the US government has been directed to prioritize economic warfare against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The intelligence community is now laser-focused on this objective in a way it hasn’t been in some years. Every bank account — and crypto wallet — where the regime has cash is being frozen. The damage at a car service center in eastern Tehran that was hit by a missile strike, on March 28, 2026.AFP via Getty Images Sanctions evasion trails are being tracked down with calls being made to the highest levels of foreign governments warning of dire enforcement actions to come without immediate action — from Baghdad to Islamabad to Beijing. There is zero doubt that the trajectory for the regime in Tehran is state collapse. But by imposing a continued shutdown of the internet and controlling the flow of information, the IRGC rulers use cognitive warfare to alter our perception of that reality, and to make it incredibly challenging to understand how much time they have left. And, even knowing that Operation Epic Fury just set back Iran’s nuclear, missile and drone threats to the United States for a generation, Americans understandably want prices lower. And that means Trump cannot allow a terror-sponsoring, pirate-like remnant regime to hold the global economy hostage — making Epic Passage a necessary step. On the domestic energy front, every feasible way to expedite refinery expansion and modernization in the United States should be fast-tracked. Internationally, every new oil project an American company has ever wanted to pursue should get the full backing of the administration. In the Gulf, the US should partner with Saudi Arabia and the UAE to form a new overland pipeline consortium — TransAram — to undercut Tehran’s long-term threat to the Strait of Hormuz by sending oil, gas and petrochemicals overland in multiple directions (including through Israel to Europe). In the end, if American — and hopefully allied — naval and air forces can clear and defend a narrow path for even a limited tanker flow to emerge from the Gulf, while still sustaining Operation Economic Fury, it’ll be checkmate for the paper ayatollah. Oil prices will fall and the regime’s strangulation will either deliver the remaining nuclear concessions Trump seeks or accelerate its collapse. If true, this points to serious fractures inside the Islamic Republic’s military and security apparatus at one of the most dangerous moments in the regime’s history. The backdrop here is important. The founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Khomeini, originally created the IRGC because he feared a military coup from the regular Iranian Army after the revolution. Over decades, the regime transformed the IRGC into a parallel military empire, giving it far more funding, political influence, economic control, and ideological favoritism than the regular Army. DRAINING THE SWAMP! https://t.co/nvqWjSSXCA — Trump War Room (@TrumpWarRoom) May 20, 2026     Reflecting Pool — 2,500 feet long, and almost 200 feet wide, the biggest such structure ever built, but also, the most troublesome for many Administrations in that, from the time it was built in 1922, it essentially never really worked! It leaked from all angles, drew dirt, grime, and decay, was often filled with garbage, and wasn’t at all representative of the two Great Monuments it connects — The Lincoln Memorial, and The Washington Monument. But, very soon, before July 4th, it will be far better than it has ever been, even going back to as long ago as 1922 — Its Original Opening! The Biden and Obama Administrations spent over 100 Million Dollars, and made it far worse! It was only open for a short while, during each Administration, before the leaks and decay took over. I, together with Doug Burgum and the Department of Interior, am fixing it the right and proper way — It will last for many decades into the future. We’ve had rain delays, and have substantially increased our scope of work as to quality, durability, and even including the stone and granite on the outside of the water itself — A big job, much bigger than originally conceived, but it is being done, after over a Century of “stop and go’s,” correctly! You will see something very special at the Reflecting Pool in a short period of time. Stay tuned. In the meantime, watch as the Fountains open throughout D.C. Fountains go up, and Crime goes down! Also, watch for Lafayette Park, directly in front of the Main Entrance to the White House. I have made a major contribution toward it. The Fountains are now working, and look magnificent as the Park is being entirely rebuilt, using far better and more beautiful materials than originally used. President Donald Trump revealed that his under-construction White House ballroom will feature advanced military technology, including a drone port. PULSE POINTS WHAT HAPPENED: President Donald J. Trump has revealed that his under-construction White House ballroom will incorporate military technology, such as a drone defense system. DETAIL: While providing a tour of the construction site to journalists on Tuesday, President Trump claimed that the venue would be both missile- and bullet-proof, as well as equipped with cutting-edge security technology. Trump emphasized the utility of the ballroom’s flat roof, which is planned to have a “drone port” equipped to protect the wider Washington, D.C. area, all while being capable of withstanding and repelling drone attacks. “[I]f a drone hits it, it bounces off, it won’t have any impact,” said the President. It was even suggested that the ballroom could include drone construction facilities to replenish the site’s defense capabilities. “Also for the drone building capacity, some of that takes place right down here,” Trump said. The White House ballroom is set to measure 90,000 square feet, accommodate roughly 1,000 guests, and cost an estimated $400 million. The project is scheduled for completion by late 2028.
