How Joan of Arc Helped Charles VII Win the Hundred Years’ War

Throughout French history, few heroines have been admired as much as Joan of Arc. This teenage girl etched her way into French history thanks to her divine mission; she had been told by God to reclaim French territory from the English. Whatever the actual reasoning for the activities that she undertook in the name of the French crown, she certainly helped to turn the Hundred Years’ War in favor of France, and helped out her monarch, King Charles VII, greatly. Both Charles and Joan would go down in French history as hugely important figures. Read on to find out why.   Background to King Charles VII Charles VII, by Jean Fouquet, 1444. Source: The Louvre   Born on February 22, 1403, to Charles VI of France and his wife Isabeau of Bavaria, Charles would go on to rule France as one of the country’s greatest kings. In fact, it was during Charles’s reign that the Hundred Years’ War came to an end, and in France’s favor. Charles has been called both Charles the Victorious and Charles the Well-Served, in no small part thanks to the efforts of Joan of Arc.   Charles came to the throne aged 19 upon his father’s death in 1422, and he would rule France until his own death in 1461.   Charles inherited the throne during one of the darkest periods of French history. Charles VI, who had suffered debilitating mental illness throughout most of his adult life, had died and lost most of the territory that his father, Charles V, had helped to reclaim from the English. In fact, the young Henry VI of England was due to be crowned Henry VI of England and France, showing what a state France had been left in. Indeed, any sort of moral or battlefield victories for the young French monarch would have likely placed him in higher esteem than his unfortunate father.   Charles VII holding the lit de justice at the Parliament of Paris, from the Grande Chroniques de France, 13th century. Source: British Library   Charles VII had it difficult from the onset of his reign—his father had disinherited him in favor of the heirs of Henry V of England, while at the same time, a civil war raged on in France between the Burgundians (supporters of the House of Valois-Burgundy, which was allied to England) and the Armagnacs (supporters of the House of Valois).   Reims, the traditional city where French kings were crowned, was under English control, as were Paris and Guyenne, so Charles was forced to move his court south to Bourges, where he was patronizingly nicknamed “the King of Bourges.” For Charles to return in the fashion he did was nothing short of remarkable.   Background to Joan of Arc Joan of Arc, c. 15th-20th century. Source: French National Archives   Joan was born into a peasant family around 1412, in Domrémy, northeastern France. Her father was a farmer who also acted as a village official, which helped to supplement his income and support his family, which included his wife, Isabelle Romée, their three sons, and two daughters (including Joan).   Joan was born in the heart of the Hundred Years’ War and certainly felt the economic, social, and cultural effects from a young age, as the majority of the fighting at this stage of the war took place in northern France. France was also politically divided, too, and the young Joan no doubt felt the aftershocks of this, too.   Joan grew up as most peasant children would have done—helping her father on the farm and receiving a religious education from her mother. Religion would play a huge part in Joan’s life, particularly in her so-called visions, which would play a huge role in her involvement in the Hundred Years’ War.   The combination of political strife and a religious upbringing would contribute to these views. Joan’s family was surrounded by Burgundian lands filled with Armagnac supporters, and by 1419, the war had arrived on their doorstep. In 1425, Domrémy was attacked, which led to the residents expressing their support for the notion that the English must be expelled from France once and for all. Coincidentally, it was shortly after this raid that Joan experienced her first visions.   Charles VII and Joan of Arc: The First Meeting Joan of Arc at the Siege of Orléans, by Eugène Lenepveu, c. 1886-90. Source: Wikimedia Commons   Just as Charles was considering fleeing to the Iberian Peninsula, which would have enabled the English to take over even more French territory, he was introduced to Joan of Arc in 1429.   The city of Orléans had been under siege since October 1428, with very little prospect of a way out. It was in early 1429 that Joan of Arc explained her vision and ordered the garrison commander to give her some soldiers and a suitable retinue to meet the Dauphin Charles at Chinon. She stated the importance of her divine mission and that the message had been delivered to her from God via visions of angels that she had seen.   Joan was remarkably granted five veteran soldiers and a letter of referral to Charles by Lord Robert de Baudricourt, the garrison commander, and she arrived at Chinon on horseback on February 23, 1429.   According to some contemporaries, Charles wanted to test Joan’s abilities and her claim that she would recognize him despite never having seen a picture of him, so he disguised himself as one of his courtiers. She reportedly immediately recognised him, and bowed in front of him, saying “God give you a happy life, sweet King!”   After their private conversation, Charles emerged inspired and confident, and in April, Joan set out to relieve Orléans.   Joan of Arc’s Successful Military Campaigns The Battle of Patay, Miniature from Vigiles de Charles VII, 1484. Source: Gallica Digital Library   Joan was welcomed into the city as word had spread about her spiritual abilities, and she proved to be a great morale booster for the troops. She often led the lines in military skirmishes. Orléans was relieved by early May, just nine days after Joan’s arrival, which was a remarkable turnaround for a city that had been under siege for almost seven months. This also turned the tide of the Hundred Years’ War in favor of the French, leading to more territory gained for Charles and for France.   The Loire Campaign was then led by Joan of Arc, and was perhaps the most important campaign during the Hundred Years’ War for France, and was most likely why they won the war two decades later.   Joan and her troops were victorious at the Battle of Jargeau in June 1429, before moving onto the Battle of Meung-sur-Loire just days later, where her victory was also replicated. This was a key victory because it seriously hindered any English advancements south of the Loire, gaining Charles even more important territory.   Battle of Jargeau, Miniature from Vigiles de Charles VII, 1484. Source: BnF   A victory at the Battle of Beaugency the next day followed suit, before arguably Joan of Arc’s most famous military victory of all: The Battle of Patay.   Fought on June 18, 1429, an English reinforcement army, which had been sent from Paris to fortify the garrisons in the Loire Valley, had arrived. The usual English tactic of using spikes to slow down a cavalry charge, followed by the use of longbowmen to rain arrows down upon the French, would likely have worked, until the archers’ positions were revealed. Some of the English noticed a stag walk onto the battlefield, and gave a hunting cry, thus revealing their position.   The French forces under Joan of Arc wasted no time and immediately attacked the English forces, who panicked and scrambled, creating a scene of pure chaos. The French, armed heavily and on horseback, made light work of the lightly-armored English archers, who were no match for them in hand-to-hand combat.   This decisive victory opened the way toward Reims, where Charles and Joan marched, and where Charles was finally formally crowned as King Charles VII of France, with Joan by his side, on July 17, 1429.   The Later Years Joan’s Execution, Miniature from Vigiles de Charles VII, 1484. Source: Gallica Digital Library   Patay had been a hugely successful victory, and the Loire Campaign was undoubtedly important in securing this victory as well as territory for Charles and for France.   However, several more campaigns in 1430 would not go so well, and people began to doubt Joan’s spiritual abilities, even going so far as to suggest that the Loire Campaign had nothing to do with her alleged spiritual abilities and was instead down to astute planning and luck.   Being an Armagnac supporter spelled the end for Joan when she was captured by the Burgundians on May 23, 1430, and after a failed escape attempt, she was handed over to the English.   She was put on trial and found guilty of heresy, wearing men’s clothes, and following demonic visions, by the French bishop Pierre Cauchon. She was sentenced to death by being burned at the stake, and died on May 30, 1431, aged approximately 19.   However, in 1920, she was canonized by Pope Benedict XV, and two years later, she was declared the patron saint of France. She has often been a symbol of martyrdom and female empowerment.   On the other hand, Charles VII experienced a much more positive end to his reign. He successfully put an end to the Armagnac-Burgundian Civil War (at least, temporarily), and with victory at the Battle of Castillon on July 17, 1453, the Hundred Years’ War came to an end, and the result was a victory for France.   Charles would go on to be succeeded by one of the more controversial monarchs of the age, his son, with whom he famously quarrelled: King Louis XI, who was perhaps better known as the Universal Spider.   Legacy Joan of Arc, by Albert Lynch, 1903. Source: Wikimedia Commons   Both Joan of Arc and Charles VII of France have positive legacies. Indeed, without Joan’s involvement in the Hundred Years’ War—spiritual or not—it is highly unlikely that the French would have experienced anything but more territorial losses.   While the spiritual side of her involvement would be questioned today, with a desperate monarch, struggling people, and a country on the verge of being taken over by its old enemy, this would literally have been a miracle. It was a huge chance that Charles took, but Joan’s involvement paid off, and she rescued France from her English foes.   Overall, the legacy of Charles VII’s reign is that he would not have achieved anywhere near as much as he did without the involvement of Joan of Arc, and Joan of Arc would not have gained as much traction as she did without the open, public support of Charles.   Charles’s reign cannot be analyzed without looking at the impact that Joan of Arc had on it, nor can Joan’s life and military success be properly analyzed without first looking at the support and backing she had from the Dauphin.

Motor School with Quinn Redeker: The Secret of My Success

I didn’t get here by accident. Follow these four easy tips to transform your relationship with your motorcycle, and your skills will skyrocket. (Photos by Kevin Wing) If you were to hang out with me at a police motor competition, you would immediately notice that I approach my police motorcycle a bit differently than the other 200 or so competitors out on the course. Yes, I graduated from a traditional police motor school just like everybody else, but my attitude towards training and the subsequent riding style I have come to use deviate from the norm. My approach continues to evolve to this day. How has it all shaken out? Well, at this point I’ve thrown my kung fu in the ring against pretty much every competitive motor officer in the country over a span of 15 years. The result? Of the 150 or so police events I’ve competed in, there are only three that I have not won. Now, I bring that little self-promotional feel-good morsel to your attention because I believe anybody, including you, can have the same level of success if you dust off your motorcycle skills compass and point it towards one destination: a deeper relationship with your motorcycle. I understand this topic might bring up uncomfortable memories from your past, so if it helps, go ahead and think of me as a marriage and family counselor. Like any good therapist, today I’m giving you some relationship homework, broken down into four key areas. And hear me loud and clear: If you put in the work, I promise you significant performance benefits on your motorcycle in the short term, with continued improvements for all the glorious years to follow. What’s your motorcycle trying to tell you? Are you listening? 1) No Such Thing as Wrong: After trying a technique or having a new experience on the motorcycle, if we get a result we don’t initially want, many of us deem the technique or experience as “wrong.” Then we stop trying and move on, usually sticking to what’s familiar to us. This way of thinking robs us of our ability to better understand our motorcycle in new situations. By mentally closing off and moving away from the “wrong” results we experienced, we inadvertently stunt our knowledge, experience, and development. This is similar to walking away from a family argument before finding a resolution – nothing changes. To move forward with our personal relationships, we need to be patient and work through problems or issues. The same goes for your motorcycle riding. So from now on, whether you’re learning, training, competing, or teaching, stop focusing on right or wrong, good or bad, success or failure. Instead, think about inputs and outputs: I do this, and I get that. When you remain open to seeing, hearing, and experiencing everything, the floodgates blow open and waves of communication come streaming in. 2) Be a Better Listener: Imagine that all I ever did was talk at you. Okay, yes, that’s what I’m doing right now. So how can I tell how my words, physical gestures, vocal inflection, or body posture are landing for you? I can’t. And that means that whatever I just told you may or may not have resonated with you in the way I intended. That begs the question: What follow-up communication would make the most sense, given that I have no idea how you’ve interpreted my message up to this point? Hard to say. Think back to a good conversation you had with somebody, where they spoke, you listened, and both of you continued in a balanced and constructive way because you understood one another and tailored your communication accordingly. I bet it was not only effortless but enabled you to gain information and insight that allowed you to move the relationship forward in a positive direction. That’s because both of you were actively listening: focused, fully engaged, and understanding the complete message, not just hearing the words and waiting for your turn to speak. Most of us ride without actively listening to our motorcycle, so we never improve communication with the machine. Instead, we throw a new technique at the bike, perhaps repeatedly, never asking ourselves how the technique was understood (processed). I know this might sound a little crazy because it’s a mechanical object, but one of the most significant talents of professional racers is their ability to hear the most minor bits of communication from their motorcycles. Change one click on a compression adjuster, and they can sense it. That’s because they are communicating with the machine on a deep level, intently listening to how an input (in this case, a change in suspension damping) is being interpreted and communicated back to them. The next time you ride, ask yourself this: How was a specific input interpreted by the motorcycle? In other words, what was my motorcycle’s reply to what I just did? Then quiet your mind and listen with intention so you can start hearing the responses. Your bike’s behavior will not only provide clues to guide you toward techniques you want to explore, but it will make you better at predicting what your bike will do before you throw an input at it. As with any relationship, when you pay close enough attention to the other person and really understand them, you learn to anticipate how they’re likely to respond to things you do or say. Your relationship with your bike is no different.  New training discoveries on the bike are fantastic. Write them down so you don’t lose them! 3) Everything Is a Lab Experiment: A key component to a meaningful laboratory experiment is manipulating only one variable at a time. To work on a given riding technique and glean the insightful feedback your motorcycle is attempting to communicate, you need to be able to ride consistently and repeatably and remain mentally focused. The environment that best represents a laboratory for me is the figure-8 pattern. Its actual dimensions are not critical and can vary depending on the technique I’m working on, so use your best judgment. I use a stopwatch and do three 10-minute sessions per day, which results in 400-500 figure-8s. There is no better way to gain maximum feedback from your motorcycle than by isolating a technique and drilling on it until the cows come home. 4) Document Your Findings: Imagine scientists conducting experiments but failing to document the results. Pretty much pointless, don’t you think? If your motorcycle gives you feedback but you fail to capture it at the time, odds are you will forget what you were doing within the conversation that enabled you to hear the response. That means you will have to start over at square one. Not great. That’s why I make a point to write down the results I get from my figure-8 lab experiments to help me continue to explore new concepts and evolve as a rider. Just grab some painter’s tape and put a fresh sheet of paper on your tank so you can take notes every time you practice. In short order you’ll discover new things, and having documented them, you’ll be able to recall and repeat them the next time you practice. By picking up where you left off, you’ll make more progress in your development, gaining muscle memory in the techniques that you deem worth keeping in your arsenal. ICE Reportedly Plans To Obtain Eye-Scanning AI Technology To Aid Deportations

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reportedly intends on acquiring AI technology capable of scanning people’s eyes from several feet away. According to 9NEWS, the agency issued a notice to purchase licenses for the iris recognition technology to aid in deportations and removals. “The mobile software from BI2 Technologies can identify individuals from 10 to 15 feet away using a smartphone app, according to the the Massachusetts-based company. It then connects with a second product that includes a database,” 9NEWS wrote. ICE plans to acquire AI technology that can scan and identify people’s irises from 10-15 feet away using a mobile app, comparing the images to databases and social media photos for deportation purposes. Follow: @AFpost pic.twitter.com/wWfD8cPf5o — AF Post (@AFpost) August 12, 2025 More from 9NEWS: ICE posted a Wednesday announcement for a sole source purchase order to BI2 Technologies for licenses to both BI2’s Inmate Recognition & Identification System and the Mobile Offender Recognition & Identification System for “enforcement and removal operations.” Steve Beaty, a computer science professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver, explained iris biometric capabilities. “In general, it’s quite accurate,” Beaty said. “The iris is the part of your eye that everybody sees — the color has stripes in it and they are unique to an individual.” Beaty said recent technological advances have made iris scanning more accessible and affordable. “The innovation is now that it’s much less expensive that it can be done on less expensive devices such as phones,” Beaty said. “In the past it was kind of a big standalone machine that these sorts of things could be used on.” The system compares iris scans to existing databases of photos. Beaty says that can come from a criminal database or even from photos scraped from social media profiles. “Facial recognition companies have scraped the internet for photos,” Beaty said. Andrew Maynard, a professor of advanced technology transitions at Arizona State University, expressed concerns about the tool’s accuracy. “This idea of scanning the iris and using it as biometrics for identifying someone we know, we can do that. The question is, can you do it with an iPhone from a few meters distance? And all the evidence is no, you can’t. The phones are simply not that good,” he told AZFamily. ICE to obtain AI technology capable of scanning people’s eyes from several feet away.https://t.co/639Uu7PGgh pic.twitter.com/mSxGBynGj8 — End Time Headlines (@EndTimeHeadline) August 12, 2025 AZFamily noted: Because he doubts the accuracy of the tech, he says ethics come into question. “To get a really good picture of somebody’s iris, you’ve gotta have good lighting. They gotta have their eyes open. You’ve gotta have a high-resolution camera,” Maynard said. If it is used, he believes oversight and updated protocols should be required. “It’s critical to know how accurate this is and what the provisions are that are in place if you get things wrong,” Maynard said. “They’re kind of getting ahead of their skis,” said a former ICE agent, who asked not to share his name. He said that while the app could help ICE agents detect people who are here illegally, especially those who have already been encountered by ICE, it also introduces privacy concerns for citizens, especially if photos are being compared to ones found on social media. “AI is evolving so rapidly and the laws are not keeping up with the evolution,” he said. ICE has not confirmed any plans to use this technology in the field. A spokesperson for ICE said the agency uses multiple forms of tech while respecting civil liberties.

President Trump Makes Endorsement In Critical Gubernatorial Race

President Trump endorsed Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in the state’s upcoming gubernatorial election. “Highly Respected and very popular Lieutenant Governor, Burt Jones, is running to be the next Governor of the Great State of Georgia, a very special place to me in that we had a BIG Presidential Election Win just eight short months ago, November 5, 2024,” Trump said on Truth Social. “As the first member of the Georgia State Assembly to Endorse ‘DONALD J. TRUMP’ for President, Burt was strongly committed to my Campaign in 2016, 2020, and 2024, and worked tirelessly to help us WIN. He has been with us from the very beginning. I know his family well, and have seen Burt tested at the most difficult levels and times — He is a WARRIOR, a successful Businessman, former SEC Championship winning Georgia Bulldogs football player (Known for his toughness!), and now, as Lieutenant Governor, Burt has proven he has the Courage and Wisdom to deliver strong results for the incredible people of his wonderful State and Nation,” Trump continued. “As your next Governor, Burt Jones will fight hard to Grow the Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Champion American Energy DOMINANCE, Continue to Secure our now Secure Southern Border, Strengthen our Military/Veterans, Ensure LAW AND ORDER, Advance Election Integrity, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment,” he added. The Hill has more: Jones began his much-anticipated campaign for governor early last month, making him the second major Republican to make a bid for Gov. Brian Kemp’s (R) current role. “Lt. Gov. Burt Jones has brought real conservative leadership that has protected our freedoms, our values and our families, and Burt Jones has worked closely with President Trump, helping Georgia make America great again,” a narrator said in an over two-minute ad Jones posted to unveil his campaign. Jones said in the ad that his campaign priorities included getting rid of the state income tax, stopping the fentanyl crisis and ensuring transgender women are barred from playing in women’s sports leagues. “President @realDonaldTrump just endorsed our campaign for Governor of Georgia!” Jones said. “We’re fighting for election integrity, lower taxes, and to secure Georgia values — and with Trump’s support, we’re just getting started,” he added. POLITICO noted: Jones is seeking to succeed Gov. Brian Kemp, with whom Trump has had a rocky relationship. The lieutenant governor, who served in the Georgia Senate from 2013 to 2023, faces state Attorney General Chris Carr for the GOP’s nomination. Carr sued Jones in federal court Thursday, alleging campaign finance violations. A state ethics commission previously declined to investigate whether Jones violated state law after Carr questioned the legality of a $10 million loan the lieutenant governor made to a campaign committee. Jones has denied any wrongdoing. On the Democratic side, a crowded primary has already taken shape — with former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, state Sen. Jason Esteves and pastor Olu Brown all seeking to flip the governor’s mansion in 2026.
