Heritage Founder Feulner Recalled as ‘a Man of Intellect, Conviction, Immense Public Influence’

Heritage Foundation founder and former President Ed Feulner was remembered Monday at a memorial service for his commitment to moral seriousness. Feulner, who passed away on July 18, served as Heritage’s president from 1977 to 2013 and again from May 2017 to January 2018. His Mass of Christian burial took place at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Alexandria, Virginia. Feulner was a practicing Catholic and a graduate of the Jesuit-run Regis University in Denver, Colorado.  During the service, he was commemorated by grandson William Lown, who shared his experience knowing the conservative legend foremost as a grandfather.  “Growing up, I had no idea the man, my grandfather, was outside of our family. It wasn’t until I was about 8 years old that I attended Heritage’s New York City Christmas party for the first time, and I had multiple people come up and tell me how much of a legend. … He was only a legend because he would convince my parents to let me stay up late and eat his favorite crinkle [cookie] with him,” Lown recalled fondly.  “It has truly been inspiring to grow up and see the impact my grandfather had, on not only our beloved country, but throughout the world,” Lown eulogized.  Feulner’s son, Edwin J. Feulner III, elaborated on his father’s famous catchphrase, “Onward!” “There are so many analogies I could use this quote for with Dad. They almost write themselves, the ascending 60 years, always-uphill path of moving conservatism into the mainstream, or convincing people and leaders around the world that freedom is actually the best way to govern your people, and so many more examples that made up Dad’s life’s work. He knew the important things in life would not come easy, yet those are the ones worth climbing the hill for,” he said. Fr. Robert Sirico, the founder of the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty, a think tank that Feulner served on the board of, gave the service’s funeral homily.  Sirico began his address by noting that it was above his pay grade to canonize Ed and that he feared that “there would be many in this city of the devil’s advocates who would impede the process of his cause,” prompting chuckles from assembled friends and family. The Catholic cleric continued, “Rather, we gather today in the presence of the risen Lord, who is the way, the truth, and the life, and by whom we are each invited to follow to that place that He invites us. We do this with tears gripped by grief, but not by despair, because again, as Jesus admonishes us in the opening words of this Gospel, ‘Let not your hearts be troubled.’” Sirico, who collaborated with Feulner for years, remembered him as “a man of intellect, conviction, immense public influence.” “But today we do not stand here to catalog his accomplishments, though they were many. Rather, we come to acknowledge something more important. He was a baptized son of God, sealed with the Holy Spirit, nourished with the Holy Eucharist, and sent forth into the world to bear witness to that truth. He ran this race before our eyes, and often encouraged many of us present here to run along with him,” the Catholic priest explained. Sirico added, Feulner “never let his faith be hidden. He allowed it to inform his love for this country, his commitment to ordered liberty, and in his defense of the dignity of every single person, without regard to their status. His work was animated not by ideology, but by a deep moral seriousness, what St. Thomas Aquinas would call magnanimitas—magnanimity.” “That is the virtue of a great soul, bigheartedness, which seeks to do great things for God, for the truth and for the glory and good of others. It is one of the noblest and most overlooked of the Christian virtues. It refers to the disposition of the soul toward greatness, especially in the pursuit of honor, excellence, and holiness—again, all for the glory of God and the good of others,” he continued.  “You see, Ed did not believe that the success of some required the diminishment of others, either in the world of ideas or in the operations of a free economy. This virtue, which St. Thomas called the ornament of all the other virtues, elevates these other virtues by setting them in service to great ends,” he said. “Ed believed this. He staked his life on it. And so even as we mourn his death, we hold fast to the hope that he now sees, not dimly as in a glass or a mirror, but face to face that he would come to know even as he was known, the Lord whom he served through his work, his mind, his prayers, and his confessions.” The post Heritage Founder Feulner Recalled as ‘a Man of Intellect, Conviction, Immense Public Influence’ appeared first on The Daily Signal.

EPA’s Climate ‘Justice’ Grant Promoted ‘Grassroots’ Climate Activity, Until DOGE Stopped It

The Environmental Protection Agency canceled a $3 million “climate justice” grant for Florida with a description that included “training grassroots leaders.” The EPA terminated the grant to the Palm Beach County Office of Resilience, a local office that focuses on emergency response and “addressing the physical, social, and economic challenges of a changing climate,” according to the office’s website.  “Grassroots” is a term commonly used for mobilizing social or political movements.   The grant description states that, among other things, the $3 million was to be spent on “training grassroots leaders on how to integrate climate resilience into their business operations.” The White House’s Department of Government Efficiency website says the grant was canceled on May 13.It was not set to begin being paid out until June 1, according to the grant description. This is one of many similar grants created under Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, which passed along party lines in 2022. The act established EPA’s Environmental and Climate Justice Community Change Grants program. The legislation put aside $2 billion for environmental and climate justice activities. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has been aggressive in scaling back what he has called wasteful contracts in the agency. The Trump administration’s EPA targeted several similar grants across the country.  “The Trump EPA is fully committed to being a great steward of taxpayer dollars,” an EPA spokesperson told The Daily Signal in a statement Monday. “We will not follow in the footsteps of [the] Biden-Harris administration, who pursued their radical agenda of wasteful DEI [diversity, equity, and inclusion] programs and ‘environmental justice’ preferencing in lieu of the EPA’s core mission of protecting human health and the environment.”  The description for the canceled Palm Beach County grant says that money would be awarded for activities including “facilitating collaboration with community-based organizations.”  “The project will empower disadvantaged communities members to participate in climate resiliency planning by training 180 community supporter staff on PBC [Palm Beach County] climate government planning process and investment opportunities,” the grant description says.  The grant was to promote the county working alongside local citizens groups, said Megan Houston, director of the Palm Beach County Office of Resilience, when asked if the phrasing suggests political or environmental activism.  “Using grassroots and community-based organizations meant that we intended to work with local nonprofits and community leaders to get their input on local government planning processes,” Houston told The Daily Signal in an email statement. “We also intended to help grassroots leaders learn how to integrate climate resilience into their business operations. For example, a housing group could include flood protection into its program scope.”  Houston said there isn’t another source of funding for this project for the county.  “There is not replacement funding for this particular project. However, PBC includes community stakeholder workshops in its projects to the [extent] funding is available, such as through the State Resilient Florida planning grant program,” she continued. ‘Beyond Outrageous’: Conservatives Slam Blue State Agency for Attacking Moms for Liberty in Police Training

Conservative groups loudly condemned a Massachusetts police agency for citing the Southern Poverty Law Center in attacking the parental rights group Moms for Liberty in a law enforcement training. Moms for Liberty called for a retraction, suggesting that the police agency actually went further than the SPLC in attacking the parental rights nonprofit. The SPLC, which gained its reputation by suing Ku Klux Klan groups into bankruptcy in the 1980s, added Moms for Liberty to a “hate map” alongside Klan chapters in 2023. It branded the parental rights nonprofit an “anti-government extremist group,” but stopped short of calling it a “hate group.” Even so, the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee included Moms for Liberty in a report on “Freedom and Hate: Speech, Crimes & Groups,” suggesting the organization is a “hate group.” “The fact that the discredited SPLC listed Moms for Liberty as an ‘anti-government extremist group’ is bad enough,” Tina Descovich, CEO and co-founder of the parental rights group, told The Daily Signal in a statement Monday. “But to have the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee echo this false claim and add to it that we’re a ‘Hate Group’ is beyond outrageous.” “They need to immediately issue a public apology for incorrectly targeting moms and dads that advocate for parental rights,” Descovich added. The Movement Behind Moms for Liberty The Massachusetts Republican Party also condemned the training. “Parents are right to seek a say in what their kids are being taught in public schools,” Massachusetts GOP Chair Amy Carnevale told The Daily Signal. “It’s disgraceful to see Moms for Liberty be classified as a hate group for exercising that right.” The parental rights movement grew out of the COVID-19 pandemic, when schools remained closed and required students to wear face masks late into 2020 and 2021, and when remote learning allowed parents to see that schools had been teaching their children divisive gender and racial lessons. The SPLC and many teachers unions champion such lessons. “While Gov. Maura Healey and the Massachusetts Teachers Union are busy stream-rolling our children’s educational futures to enact their far-left agendas, the MassGOP is focused on recruiting concerned parents to run as Republicans up and down the ballot in 2026,” Carnevale added. The ‘Discredited’ SPLC Moms for Liberty is not the only conservative group on the SPLC “hate map” in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Family Institute also appears on the map as an “anti-LGBTQ hate group.” The institute condemned the police training. “We are deeply disturbed that our state’s law enforcement officers are being trained to brand conservative organizations like Moms for Liberty as ‘hate groups,'” Sam Whiting, the institute’s general counsel, told The Daily Signal. “The Southern Poverty Law Center has been discredited time and time again as a radical left-wing organization that weaponizes the language of ‘hate’ to disparage any group that disagrees with their politics,” Whiting added. “The Massachusetts Police Municipal Training Committee was negligent at best to use the SPLC as a source and should take immediate action to remove anti-conservative bias from its trainings.”  Critics on both the Right and the Left have accused the SPLC of exaggerating “hate” to demonize its opponents and raise money. Former SPLC staffer Bob Moser called the “hate” accusations a “highly profitable scam.” Former ACLU President Nadine Strossen dissented from the SPLC’s accusation that the conservative Christian law firm Alliance Defending Freedom is a “hate group.” Focus on the Family Critics have long called the SPLC “anti-Christian” because it puts conservative Christian groups on the “hate map,” claiming these groups demonize LGBTQ people. The SPLC long defended itself from such claims by noting that it did not put the conservative Christian organization Focus on the Family on the “hate map.” Yet earlier this year, the SPLC did just that. Focus on the Family also condemned the Massachusetts police training. “The SPLC is impetuously sloppy with their hate list which provides no useful information to anyone, save for the SPLC’s fund-raising efforts,” Glenn T. Stanton, director of global family formation studies at the Christian nonprofit, told The Daily Signal. “The Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee shows their own poor sleuthing skills by giving it any credence,” he added. “Since the SPLC’s ‘hate list’ is so partisanly slanted against mainstream conservative organizations, it certainly does raise the question of what kind of justice good conservative citizens under their jurisdiction might expect.” Committee Stands by Moms for Liberty Attack The Municipal Training Committee did not respond to The Daily Signal’s request for comment by publication time, but a spokesperson stood by the training in a statement to GBH News. The representative said the curriculum “draws on a broad range of open-source materials and activity happening across Massachusetts to expose officers to the perspectives they may encounter in the field while emphasizing respectful, unbiased engagement with all members of the public.” The SPLC did not respond to The Daily Signal’s request for comment, but an SPLC research analyst, speaking to GBH News, praised the training committee for including Moms for Liberty in the curriculum. How to Rescue a German Shepherd: A Comprehensive Guide

German Shepherds are intelligent, loyal, and versatile dogs that often find themselves in need of rescue. At DogingtonPost, we’ve seen countless German Shepherds thrive in loving homes after being adopted. This guide will walk you through the process of rescuing a German Shepherd, from understanding their unique needs to preparing your home and navigating the adoption process. By the end, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge to give a rescued German Shepherd a second chance at happiness. Why Do German Shepherds Need Rescue? German Shepherds often find themselves in shelters or rescue organizations despite their popularity. Understanding the reasons behind this can help potential adopters make informed decisions. Behavioral Issues and Lack of Training Many owners surrender German Shepherds due to behavioral problems. These intelligent dogs require consistent training and mental stimulation. Without proper guidance, they can develop destructive habits or become overly protective. Owners who can’t keep up with their mental needs may feel overwhelmed. Changes in Owner’s Life Circumstances Life changes frequently lead to German Shepherds being given up. These dogs need time, space, and resources. When owners can’t provide these due to divorce, relocation, or financial difficulties, they may feel forced to surrender their pets. The American Veterinary Medical Association lists moving as one of the top reasons pets end up in shelters. Health Concerns and Special Needs German Shepherds are prone to certain health issues like hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy. Some owners surrender their dogs when faced with expensive medical bills or the need for specialized care. Degenerative myelopathy is one of the more common health problems in German Shepherds, though not as common as hip and elbow dysplasia. Challenges and Rewards of Adopting Rescued German Shepherds Adopting a rescued German Shepherd comes with unique challenges but also significant rewards. These dogs often need extra patience and understanding as they adjust to new environments. They may have trust issues or anxiety from past experiences, potentially requiring work with a professional trainer or behaviorist to address specific issues. However, rescued German Shepherds can become incredibly loyal and loving companions when given a second chance. They often show immense gratitude and form strong bonds with their families. Adopting from a rescue also allows you to know more about the dog’s personality and any potential health issues upfront, as rescues typically provide thorough health checks and behavioral assessments. Now that we understand why German Shepherds need rescue and the potential challenges and rewards of adoption, let’s explore how to prepare for bringing one of these magnificent dogs into your home. Getting Ready for Your German Shepherd Evaluating Your Living Space Before you adopt a German Shepherd, take a critical look at your living situation. These large, active dogs need space to move and play. You should have a fenced yard where they can run safely. If you live in an apartment, prepare for multiple daily walks and trips to the dog park. Consider your work schedule too. German Shepherds thrive on companionship and mental stimulation. If you’re away for long periods, you might need to arrange for a dog walker or consider doggy daycare to prevent boredom and potential destructive behavior. Gathering Essential Supplies Start by creating a shopping list of must-have items for your new German Shepherd. Here’s what you’ll need: A sturdy collar and leash High-quality dog food appropriate for their age and health status Food and water bowls A comfortable bed or crate Grooming tools (brush, nail clippers, shampoo) Toys for mental stimulation and physical exercise Treats for training Don’t forget to factor in the ongoing costs of food, regular vet check-ups, and potential medical expenses. Creating a Safe Home Environment German Shepherds are curious and intelligent, which means they can get into trouble if your home isn’t properly prepared. Remove or secure any potentially dangerous items. This includes: Toxic plants (like lilies or azaleas) Chemicals and cleaning supplies Small objects that could be swallowed Electrical cords Medications Set up a designated area for your new dog with their bed, toys, and water bowl. This gives them a safe space to retreat to when they feel overwhelmed. Consider installing baby gates to restrict access to certain areas of your home, especially during the initial adjustment period. This can help prevent accidents and keep your German Shepherd out of potentially dangerous situations while they’re still learning the rules of their new home. Preparing for Training and Socialization German Shepherds are highly intelligent and trainable, but they require consistent guidance. Research positive reinforcement training methods and prepare a training schedule. Stock up on high-value treats (small, soft, and smelly work best) for rewarding good behavior. Plan for early socialization experiences. Expose your new German Shepherd to various people, animals, and environments in a controlled and positive manner. This will help them develop into well-adjusted adult dogs. Understanding Health Considerations German Shepherds are prone to certain health issues such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, and bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus). Familiarize yourself with these conditions and their symptoms. Find a reputable veterinarian who has experience with the breed. Schedule an initial check-up soon after adoption to establish a baseline for your dog’s health. Now that you’ve prepared your home and yourself for your new German Shepherd, it’s time to explore the adoption process itself. The next chapter will guide you through finding reputable rescue organizations and navigating the adoption application. Finding Your Perfect German Shepherd Match Research Reputable Rescue Organizations Start your search for German Shepherd-specific rescue organizations in your area. These groups often possess extensive experience with the breed and provide valuable insights. The American German Shepherd Rescue Association offers a list of reputable rescues across the United States. Don’t overlook general animal shelters, as they frequently have German Shepherds available for adoption. Websites like Petfinder and Adopt a Pet allow you to search for German Shepherds in your area, with filters for age, gender, and other characteristics. When you evaluate a rescue organization, look for transparency in their adoption process, health protocols, and follow-up support. A reputable rescue will answer your questions and may ask you probing questions to ensure their dogs go to suitable homes. Complete the Adoption Application Once you identify a rescue, prepare to fill out a detailed adoption application. This typically includes questions about your living situation, experience with dogs, and plans for care and training. Be honest in your responses – rescues use this information to match dogs with the right homes. Many rescues require a home visit as part of the adoption process. This isn’t an intrusion, but rather ensures the dog will live in a safe environment. Use this opportunity to ask questions about the specific needs of German Shepherds. Some organizations might request references (including from your veterinarian if you’ve had pets before). Have these ready to speed up the process. The American Kennel Club suggests preparing a list of questions for the rescue as well, covering topics like the dog’s history, temperament, and any known health issues. Meet Potential Adoptees After the rescue approves your application, you’ll have the chance to meet German Shepherds available for adoption. Some rescues allow you to browse available dogs online first, while others prefer to make matches based on your application. When you meet a potential adoptee, observe the dog’s behavior and energy level. Does it seem comfortable around you? How does it interact with other people or animals? Ask about the dog’s background, including any known triggers or special needs. Take your time with the decision. Some rescues offer foster-to-adopt programs, allowing you to spend more time with the dog before making a final commitment. This can help if you’re new to the breed or have other pets at home. Adopting a German Shepherd is a long-term commitment. These dogs can live 9-13 years on average (according to the American Kennel Club). Take your time to find the right match, and you’ll gain a loyal, intelligent companion for years to come. Final Thoughts Rescuing a German Shepherd requires preparation and commitment. These intelligent dogs often need new homes due to behavioral issues or changes in their owners’ lives. Creating a safe environment and gathering essential supplies will set the stage for a successful adoption. The adoption process ensures the best match between dog and owner. You will research reputable rescue organizations, complete applications, and meet potential adoptees. This thorough approach helps you find your perfect German Shepherd partner. We at DogingtonPost encourage you to consider German Shepherd adoption. Your new four-legged friend will offer loyalty, affection, and companionship (for up to 13 years). The journey of dog rescue German Shepherd style may present challenges, but the rewards are immeasurable.

Ocasio-Cortez offers bizarre denial after woman arrested for alleged terror threats was identified as her former organizer

A woman who was arrested for allegedly making threats against Jewish people, including children, was identified as a former youth organizer for Democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, but her office issued a bizarre response. Iman Abdul, 27, allegedly posted a call for violence against Jews on Thursday to her social media account, according to the New York Post. She was arrested for making a terroristic threat, acting in a manner injurious to a child, aggravated harassment, and making a threat of mass harm.'I called for an attack on the school, the Zionist institution funded by our public dollars. ... We have every right to verbally attack the school.'Abdul posted an image of the Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences in Manhattan Beach and then allegedly added a caption calling for people to attack Jews."If anyone needs a public school in NYC to attack for whatever reason ... Lexus driving Israhell [sic] loving Zionisits [sic] all attend here," she reportedly wrote. The post has since been deleted.Abdul was arrested on Friday at her home in Brooklyn, and the Post also reported that Abdul had worked as a youth organizer for Ocasio-Cortez in 2018. That same year, she had worked as a paid canvasser for Democratic state Sen. Julia Salazar, who confirmed the report. When screenshots of the post were circulated online, Abdul responded and denied encouraging violence."I never called for an attack on the school in the sense of mass organization or not even individual people attacking individuals, that's literally stupid," she wrote. "I called for an attack on the school, the Zionist institution funded by our public dollars. ... We have every right to verbally attack the school."The congresswoman's office seemingly denied the report in a statement to Fox News Digital."This person was never staff on the campaign and any representation of such is false," the statement reads. "Their comments are appalling and we condemn threats of violence without hesitation."While the statement denies Abdul was a staffer, it does not specifically address the possibility that Abdul worked as a volunteer for the campaign. Blaze News has reached out to AOC's office for clarification.RELATED: Ocasio-Cortez hammered with accusations of anti-Semitism after she blames Jewish group for Democrats' loss New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov appeared to confirm the story in a post on social media."Nobody comes to my district and threatens to attack my constituents without consequences," she posted Saturday."On Thursday, we were alerted that a former AOC youth organizer urged her followers to 'attack' a NYC high school JUST BECAUSE Jewish students attend it," Vernikov added. She added that she called the NYPD because the school is in her district and asked for Abdul's arrest as well as for police security for the school. She also referred to Abdul as a "Hamasnik" to identify her as an alleged supporter of the terror group. "Let's be clear. With an open antisemite like [NYC mayoral candidate Zohran] Mamdani on the ballot, these hate mongers are far more emboldened," she continued. "I'm not going to let a Hamasnik come into our neighborhoods and threaten us without swift action and consequences. FAFO."Abdul's attorney declined to comment on a request from Fox News Digital.Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox.
