I’m shocked that AOL’s dial-up internet service is still in use. AOL has announced its dial-up internet service will soon come to a close. In a nostalgic and saddening announcement for some, AOL announced it will discontinue its dial-up international services on September 30 of this year. CNBC provided more details on the move by AOL: In the hazy impressions of memory, some may even recall it fondly: The AOL dial-up internet service that those of a certain age associate with the World Wide Web is coming to a close. The company, also known by its “You’ve got mail” greeting and the CD trial discs — so many CDs — made the announcement on its website. “AOL routinely evaluates its products and services and has decided to discontinue Dial-up Internet. This service will no longer be available in AOL plans,” the web provider said. Absent the wireless signals of the modern day, dial-up connected to the internet using a conventional telephone line, emitting a distinctive, high-pitched chirping sound in the process. AOL, now part of Yahoo, said the dial-up service, along with the AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser, will be discontinued on Sept. 30. America Online was famous for its free trial discs, which seemed to be everywhere in the 1990s when the internet was gaining steam in households across the United States and beyond. It changed its name to just AOL in 2006. Verizon sold AOL and Yahoo to private equity firm Apollo Global Management for $5 billion in 2021. The Vatican has once again found itself in the middle of a scandal. A new accusation claims Vatican financial leaders may have manipulated bank transfers to enable money laundering. The accusation comes from the former top financial officer of the Vatican, who was forced out of his job back in 2017 Politico had more details to share on the operation: The Vatican is facing allegations it used a “skeleton key for money laundering” by illegally manipulating bank transfers. The city state’s former top financial cop ― who was forced out in 2017 ― has claimed that its payroll agency was able to alter the names and account numbers on transactions after they were made, masking the identity of recipients and senders. The implication would be enormous because it would have made it possible for Vatican officials to wire funds to private clients without revealing who they were, possibly enabling unlimited money laundering and violating the most basic anti-fraud rules. The claims come at an awkward moment for new Pope Leo XIV as he seeks to boost the Catholic Church’s reputation after decades of rolling financial scandals and a looming budget shortfall. The Vatican denies all the allegations and people familiar with SWIFT, the organization that facilitates international bank transfers, say what the Vatican is being accused of is technically impossible. Yet, the allegations are being taken seriously because of the credibility of the people making them and because of the Vatican’s history of misconduct. One of the most highlighted financial scandals was the conviction of Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu. ABC News reported more on the Church’s financial scandal: The Vatican city court on Saturday sentenced Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, once touted as a possible papal contender, to 5 1/2 years in prison for mismanaging a Vatican property portfolio which included a luxury flat in London. Becciu, the former Substitute for General Affairs in the Vatican Secretariat of State, is the highest ranking Vatican official ever to face financial charges. He was convicted on two counts of embezzlement and one of aggravated fraud, according to the Italian news agency ANSA. He was acquitted of other counts of embezzlement, abuse of office and witness tampering. The court also fined Becciu 8,000 euros and banned him from public office for life. Becciu’s defense lawyer, Fabio Viglione, said he and his client “respect the sentence” but will appeal. Eight other defendants were convicted Saturday and one, Msgr. Mauro Carlino, the former personal secretary to Becciu, was acquitted. Prison sentences for the other defendants ranged from three years and 9 months to seven years and six months. The defendants were ordered by the court to pay damages of over 200 million euros in total.

CNN reported: Once a dramatic feature of the White House entryway, the official portrait of former President Barack Obama has been moved to a decidedly less prominent position, underscoring the yearslong tensions between the 44th and 47th presidents. Portraits of other recent predecessors with whom President Donald Trump has a contentious relationship, former President George W. Bush and his father, George H. W. Bush, have also been moved. Trump directed staff to move the Obama portrait to the top of the Grand Staircase, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN, where it will now be out of view from thousands of visitors who tour the White House each day. One of the sources added that the portraits of both Bushes are also now in the staircase area. Multiple sources have said that the president is directly involved with nearly everything that is done to the aesthetic of the White House, big or small. CNN obtained a photo of the Obama portrait hanging at the top of the stairwell in a corner, at the landing of the entrance to the private residence. That area is heavily restricted to members of the first family, US Secret Service agents, and a limited number of White House and executive residence staff. It is firmly out of view for any visitor hoping to see the photorealistic Robert McCurdy painting of the former president, a source familiar with the matter confirmed. This isn’t the first time President Trump has moved Obama’s portrait in the White House. Raw Story noted: Earlier this year, White House staffers replaced Obama’s official portrait with a painting of Trump in the aftermath of an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. At the time, the painting of Obama was relocated to the Grand Foyer, according to reports. Now keep in mind that it is CNN reporting this, so take it with a grain of salt. But, honestly, I can’t say I blame President Trump if he truly made the call to move these portraits out of sight, especially in the case of Barack Obama’s. It’s understandable why he did it, even for purely aesthetic reasons. Obama’s portrait doesn’t exactly fit the style of the White House. It looks like an amateur Photoshop job… But, aside from aesthetics, there could be another reason President Trump wanted Obama’s portrait hidden. It could very well have something to do with the ongoing grand jury investigation into the giant conspiracy committed by Barack Obama and everyone else involved in manufacturing the Russian hoax… Independent noted: This comes as tensions rise between Trump and Obama, who served in the White House from 2009 to 2017. National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard accused Obama of a “years-long coup” against Trump last month. She released declassified emails and claimed the documents revealed a “treasonous conspiracy” by Obama and his officials related to the investigation into Russian election interference in 2016. The president then accused Obama of “treason” on July 22, just days after Gabbard released the documents. In response, Obama spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush said there’s nothing in these documents that “undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes,” Reuters reports. Russia has denied claims it attempted to interfere in the election. Rodenbush also called the claims “bizarre,” “ridiculous” and “a weak attempt at distraction.” His comments came as the administration was facing heavy criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike over its handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. Last week, Attorney General Pam Bondi also ordered prosecutors to launch a grand jury investigation into claims that Obama administration officials manufactured intelligence about Russian election interference. The move does not indicate charges are imminent.

In response to the chaos that went down in Washington, D.C.’s Navy Yard on Saturday night, the city has implemented a new ‘juvenile curfew zone.’ On Saturday night, over 100 so-called “local youths” took over the park, riding dirt bikes and launching fireworks. There were reports of theft, and one person was also arrested for shooting a gun. According to MPD officers, the boy shot at another group of teens on the 100 block of M Street, Southeast, around 9:26 p.m. No injuries were reported. Smith enacted the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Announcement in order to implement the new curfew. A press release reads: Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith has announced the establishment of a Juvenile Curfew Zone in Navy Yard. The Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 gives the Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department the authority to order a Juvenile Curfew Zone in an area where large groups of youths are gathering or intend to gather in a manner that poses a risk of substantial harm to public safety. WUSA9 reported on the details of the curfew: Under the curfew rules, there cannot be a gathering of nine or more people under the age of 18, in the designated areas, unless they are there for certain permitted activities, including: Being out with a parent or guardian Completing an errand at the direction of a parent or guardian, without detour or stop Riding in a car involved in interstate travel Working or returning home from a job, without detour or stop Becoming involved in an emergency Standing on a sidewalk that joins their residence or the residence of a next-door neighbor, if the neighbor did not complain to police Attending an official school, religious, or other recreational activity sponsored by the city, a civic organization, or other similar group that takes responsibility for the juvenile (this includes traveling to and from the activity) Exercising their First Amendment rights protected by the U.S. Constitution, including the free exercise of speech, religion, and right of assembly The curfew zone will be in effect nightly from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., starting Sunday and lasting through Wednesday. It should also be noted that President Trump has the direct authority to deploy the National Guard in Washington, D.C. — unlike other states where governors are given command. Reuters reported: While details of the plan were unclear, the administration is preparing to deploy hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington, a U.S. official told Reuters, a controversial tactic Trump used recently in Los Angeles to tackle immigration protests over the objections of local officials. Trump has not made a final decision, the official said, adding that the number of troops and their role are still being determined. Unlike in California and every other state, where the governor typically decides when to activate Guard troops, the president directly controls the National Guard in Washington, D.C. Past instances of the Guard’s deployment in the city include in response to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters. The House Oversight Committee is planning to gather evidence about Joe Biden’s cognitive decline that could void pardons and orders signed with his infamous autopen. This was a pretty massive discovery. Dinosaur footprints were discovered in a Texas county after flooding washed away rocks and dirt that had buried them. A group of volunteers helping with flood relief efforts discovered the dinosaur footprints in Northwest Travis County shortly after a flood swept away large amounts of sediment in the region. ABC News reported more details on the discovery: Ancient dinosaur footprints dating back 115 million years were discovered in Northwest Travis County, Texas, after recent flooding swept away layers of sediment and brush that had long hidden them, according to officials. The discovery was made in the Big Sandy Creek area over the weekend by a group of volunteers, Travis County Judge Andy Brown, who serves as the county’s chief executive, told ABC News. The tracks were found on private property, with the exact location being kept secret at the owner’s request. University of Texas paleontologists confirmed at least 15 individual footprints, Matthew Brown, a paleontologist at UT Austin, told ABC News. Each footprint measured approximately 18-20 inches long and dated back 110-115 million years, according to Brown. The tracks were left by meat-eating dinosaurs similar to an Acrocanthosaurus, a roughly 35-foot-long bipedal carnivore, Brown said. Additional prints found nearby might have represented a large herbivorous sauropod dinosaur called Paluxysaurus, which is the official state dinosaur of Texas. Brown and fellow UT Austin paleontologist Kenneth Bader on Tuesday afternoon visited the spot where the tracks were discovered to assess them and to advise officials on protecting them during ongoing flood cleanup efforts. “We expect to return to the site in the near future to more thoroughly document the tracks with maps and 3D imaging,” Brown said. He said his team hoped to determine whether multiple dinosaurs moved together as a group or if individuals crossed the area independently. Experts who analyzed the tracks determined they were authentic, and likely came from Acrocanthosaurus, a large bipedal predator. Although technically different, the creature looks similar to a Tyrannosaurus-Rex. Researchers estimated the tracks were between 110 million and 115 million years old, and that they had only been uncovered due to the floodwater washing away the dirt and gravel that were covering them.
