Germany’s Oktoberfest was shut down for several hours on Wednesday as police searched the area of the festival grounds due to a bomb threat. The suspect, who had been living in the town of Starnberg south of the city, had been carrying a backpack containing an explosive device, a Bavaria police statement said earlier. City police said the blast before dawn in northern Munich at a residential building, which had been deliberately set on fire, appeared connected to a domestic dispute. The Bavarian interior ministry described it as a dispute over paternity, German news agency dpa reported. During the initial investigation, a letter written by the suspect and found near the crime scene contained a “non-specific” threat of explosives related to Oktoberfest, Bavaria police said. Daily Mail reports that an injured individual found near the building where the explosion occurred later passed away. The suspect allegedly killed his 90-year-old father, injured his mother, and injured a 21-year-old woman at the property, the outlet reports. At least one person’s death was believed to be connected to the explosion at a residential building, which Munich police said was deliberately set on fire. The perpetrator allegedly killed himself at Lercheanauer Lake, which is a five-minute drive from the home. According to the newspaper Welt, responders discovered hand grenades with tripwires at the house. Several booby traps were also found. One local resident told Die Welt that he ‘woke up around 5am because there were a few loud bangs. I got up, looked, and then there was a fire’. Another reported a noxious cloud of smoke, along with the smell of fire. A 200m evacuation zone around the explosion’s epicentre was triggered, forcing local residents to leave the area.
