Canada ended a digital service tax that would have hit major American tech companies hard after President Donald Trump announced he was ending trade talks with the country over the levy. Canada’s Department of Finance said Sunday that it would rescind its Digital Service Tax (DST) in “anticipation of a mutually beneficial comprehensive trade arrangement with the United States.” The reversal came after Trump said on Friday that he was “terminating” trade discussions.  The tax, which was expected to take effect on Monday, was anticipated to have a significant impact on United States-based companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, and Apple.  JULY 4 SALE: Get Six Months Of DW+ Free “Canada’s new government is focused on building the strongest economy in the G7 and standing up for Canadian workers and businesses,” said Minister of Finance and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne. “Rescinding the digital services tax will allow the negotiations of a new economic and security relationship with the United States to make vital progress and reinforce our work to create jobs and build prosperity for all Canadians.” Earlier this month, Champagne said that the Digital Service Tax would be implemented despite opposition from the United States. He said on June 19 that the tax was “going ahead” as scheduled and would be applied.  The digital service tax was enacted to require “foreign and domestic large businesses to pay tax on certain revenue earned from engaging with online users in Canada,” according to the Canadian government. The tax would have cost American businesses up to $2.3 billion annually, according to a study conducted by the Computer and Communications Industry Association.  Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday that he and Trump had agreed to continue trade discussions with the hope of signing an agreement by July 21.  The resumption of talks follows Trump’s social media berating of Canada on Friday.  “We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with, including the fact that they have charged our Farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on Dairy Products, has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our Country,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately. We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period.” Several other trade deadlines are looming, including a July 9 cutoff for the United States and the European Union to make a deal before 50% tariffs on European imports are imposed.

WASHINGTON—The Trump administration found that Harvard’s treatment of both Jewish and Israeli students violated federal civil rights law, the administration told Harvard on Monday. “Today, the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism is notifying you that the Office for Civil Rights at the United States Department of Health and Human Services has concluded its Title VI investigation regarding anti-Semitism at Harvard University,” the Trump administration said in a letter sent to Harvard President Alan Garber on Monday. “After a thorough investigation, HHS OCR finds that Harvard University is in violent violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin,” the letter continues. If the university fails to “institute adequate changes immediately,” it will lose all federal financial resources, the Trump administration said. The letter adds: “Harvard may of course continue to operate free of federal privileges, and perhaps such an opportunity will spur a commitment to excellence that will help Harvard thrive once again.” The Trump administration describes how the majority of Jewish students at Harvard reported experiencing discrimination or negative bias on campus — and a quarter of Jewish students felt physically unsafe. “Jewish and Israeli students were assaulted and spit on; they hid their kippahs for fear of being harassed and concealed their Jewish identity from classmates for fear of ostracization,” the letter shared. Further, antisemitic images were widely circulated throughout the Harvard community, such as one image showing a dollar sign inside a Star of David, and the “campus was vandalized with anti-Semitic stickers, including one that showed the Israeli flag with a swastika in place of the Star of David.” The John Harvard statue (Photo by Heather Diehl/The Boston Globe via Getty Images) “The campus was wracked by demonstrations that flagrantly violated the University’s rules of conduct,” the letter noted. “The demonstrations included calls for genocide and murder, and denied Jewish and Israeli students access to campus spaces.” Additionally, Harvard allowed an “impermissible, multiweek encampment” in the heart of campus that “instilled fear in, and disrupted the studies of, Jewish and Israeli students.” “Even worse,” the Trump administration letter said, “individuals who participated in the encampment received lax and inconsistent discipline — and as the discipline was reviewed by higher levels among the faculty, it was often downgraded. By the end of the process, even accounting only for the students that were charged, only a fraction received some sort of discipline, and none were suspended. A member of Harvard’s own leadership called the disciplinary process ‘not fair’ and ‘not right.'” Harvard didn’t even dispute these findings, the Trump administration said. “These facts, while tragic for the individuals involved, are important to address for a broader, historical reason as well,” the letter stated. “As history has proven, the failure to face the reality of anti-Semitism can have catastrophic effects. The Holocaust engulfed Europe due to the ‘[d]isbelief, incredulity, and denial on the part of both victims and onlookers’ which ‘worked to the advantage of those who wanted to eradicate the Jews.'” The Trump administration described Harvard’s inaction as a clear example of the “demographic hierarchy that has taken hold of the University,” arguing that the university’s commitment to racial hierarchies “has enabled anti-Semitism to fester on Harvard’s campus and has led a once great institution to humiliation, offering remedial math and forcing Jewish students to hide their identities and ancestral stories.” In a statement to The Daily Wire, Harvard described antisemitism as “unacceptable” and a “serious problem.” “Harvard is far from indifferent on this issue and strongly disagrees with the government’s findings,” a spokesman said. “Harvard has made significant strides to combat bigotry, hate and bias. We are not alone in confronting this challenge and recognize that this work is ongoing. We remain committed to ensuring members of our Jewish and Israeli community are embraced, respected, and can thrive at Harvard.”

The State Department has officially revoked the visas for Bob Vylan, the British rap duo who went viral over the weekend after leading a chant at England’s annual Glastonbury Music Festival that called for the death of Israeli soldiers. As the state representative for Tennessee’s 65th District, I’ve heard loud and clear from the hardworking people of Williamson County: They want a government that delivers results — not excuses. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) raided a Los Angeles residence that the federal law enforcement agency says has been used to harbor Iranian illegal aliens with ties to terrorists. CBP arrested two unidentified individuals at the home on Friday after a previous operation at the same address resulted in the arrest of seven Iranian nationals, some of whom are on the FBI terror watch list and associated with an Iranian human smuggling network. “CBP executed a federal search warrant today at a human smuggling hub in Los Angeles tied to national security threats,” Customs and Border Protection said in a post on X on Friday. “Two individuals were arrested during the operation, which was led by CBP’s Special Response Team with support from Border Patrol tactical units and Air and Marine Operations.” ?BREAKING? The arrests come amid a broader wave of enforcement actions against Iranian illegal aliens in the wake of the United States’ bombing campaign that targeted Iran’s nuclear production sites. Among those arrested was a man who served as a sniper in the Iranian military, while another Iranian national was identified as a former member of the Iranian military’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. That individual, ICE said, was connected to the terror organization Hezbollah. Federal authorities also arrested an American citizen who is accused of harboring an unlawfully present Iranian national and now faces federal charges after she threatened to “shoot officers in the head” as they conducted the raid. “We have been saying we are getting the worst of the worst out — and we are,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “We don’t wait until a military operation to execute; we proactively deliver on President Trump’s mandate to secure the homeland.”

Actor John Cusack abandoned all efforts at self-preservation when he declared that Iran “should get” a nuclear weapon and claimed that doing so would be “the only way” to truly keep the United States and Israel in check. Cusack, who has often been critical of administrations run by both major political parties, claims first and foremost to be “anti-war” — a position he describes more as “pro-troops and pro-human” because he’d prefer to see all troops returned home and an end to the killing. Despite that position, he took to X on Friday to argue that the world’s largest state sponsor of terror should have access to the most dangerous weapon in existence — even though Iran has called for Israel to be “wiped off the map” and frequently uses “death to America” as a rallying cry. The American strikes, in combination with a series of attacks carried out by the Israel Defense Forces against military and nuclear targets in Iran, were all aimed at the same objective: preventing a rogue Islamist state from acquiring nuclear weapons. In response to the attacks, Iran fired missiles indiscriminately at civilian populations in Israel, attempting to overwhelm the Iron Dome’s defense capabilities – and, in some cases, succeeding. Cusack’s commentary over the last several years has been blatantly anti-Israel. He has repeatedly claimed that the situation in Gaza amounts to a genocide, denying mass rape perpetrated by Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023, who slaughtered 1,200 Israelies and sparked the ongoing war. He also referred to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “a murderous gangster” — but had no such words for the terrorists who entered Israeli homes, labeling Hamas as a “charity organization” in past posts on X.
