Early Friday morning, ten inmates — of which several are facing murder charges — broke out of a New Orleans jail. In a plot reminiscent of Shawshank Redemption, the inmates escaped by digging a hole behind a toilet. After breaching the wall, they ran out of the jail through a supply door in the wee hours of the morning. Their escape wasn’t discovered until a routine head count hours later. The video captures the moment they yanked a sliding cell door off its track at 12:23 a.m., then breached a wall behind a toilet by 1:01 a.m. A headcount at 8:30 a.m. confirmed the breakout. Two escapees have since been recaptured, but eight remain at large and are considered armed and dangerous. The footage is now central to a growing manhunt and rising pressure on jail officials to explain the lapse. CNN has more details on the inmates who escaped: The 10 escaped inmates have been identified as Corey Boyd, Dkenan Dennis, Jermaine Donald, Derrick Groves, Antoine Massey, Robert Moody, Kendell Myles, Gary Price, Leo Tate and Lenton Vanburen, according to the sheriff’s office. Online records show the inmates – who range in age from 19 to 42 years old – face a wide array of charges. Several have been charged with murder. Other charges include aggravated assault with a firearm, false imprisonment with a weapon, armed robbery with a firearm and domestic abuse battery. Officials initially reported that 11 people had escaped the facility, but later said it was a miscount and 10 had escaped. The inmate had been moved to a different cell, but it had not been updated in the system, Hutson said. One of the escapees, Myles, was captured after deputies found him hiding under a car at a hotel parking garage, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office. Myles ran away when troopers tried to make contact with him, but he was quickly apprehended, Louisiana State Police said. Myles was previously charged with attempted second-degree murder, according to Orleans Parish records. He has been rebooked for a new charge of simple escape, the sheriff’s office said on Facebook. Another escapee, Moody, was also captured following a Crime Stoppers tip, the sheriff’s office announced Friday night. He had previously been charged with aggravated second-degree battery, among other charges. NOLA reports that three of the ten inmates have now been captured, leaving seven still on the loose: Three inmates have now been arrested after a 10 men escaped the Orleans Justice Center early Friday morning. Dkenan Dennis was arrested on Dale Street in New Orleans East, according a source close to the investigation. He had been jailed on charges of armed robbery and illegal possession of weapons. And then we saw stuff falling, and next thing you knew, most of the house was gone.” Rescue crews were also combing through tornado damage in Somerset, where at least one person died.
