iOS 17.5 beta 4 now available with these 5 features

As the testing cycle of iOS 17.5 is nearing its end‚ Apple has just released beta 5 to developers. This might be Apple’s last iOS 17 update for iPhone users before it unveils iOS 18 during the WWDC 2024 keynote on June 10. That said‚ this roundup includes everything new so far that has been added to the iPhone in Apple’s iOS 17.5 beta. So far‚ the biggest change for this software is an exclusive EU feature. After Apple opened the iPhone for sideloading due to the Digital Markets Act‚ which adds alternative app marketplaces for EU users‚ Apple is now letting people from the region download apps directly from a developer’s website. Here’s how the company describes this new feature: Web Distribution‚ available with a software update later this spring‚ will let authorized developers distribute their iOS apps to EU users directly from a website owned by the developer. Apple will provide authorized developers access to APIs that facilitate the distribution of their apps from the web‚ integrate with system functionality‚ back up and restore users’ apps‚ and more. Downloading apps directly from the developer’s website started to work with iOS 17.5 beta 2. The previous test version also added a new privacy option. On Screen Time settings and the Content &; Privacy Restrictions tab‚ you can allow app installations from the web. Besides that‚ the latest iOS 17.5 beta adds: Podcasts widget change: The Podcasts widget has a new dynamic color that changes depending on what you’re listening to. Unwanted tracking system: 9to5Mac found references to a new system that can turn off unwanted tracking accessories‚ such as AirTags or other third-party item trackers. This anti-stalking feature has yet to be made available. Apple Universal Link for eSIM install: This new feature offers a link instead of a QR code to activate an eSIM on your iPhone BGR will let you know once we find new features with iOS 17.5 beta 4. macOS 14.5 beta 4 now available with two important bug fixes

Apple has just released macOS 14.5 beta 4 to developers. At this moment‚ it’s unclear what features this software update might bring‚ as we haven’t found anything so far. As we approach the macOS 15 announcement‚ it’s more likely that Apple is focusing on bug fixes and security patches as it works on new features for this upcoming major update‚ which is said to add Artificial intelligence functions. That said‚ macOS 14.5 beta 4 is fixing two main issues‚ according to Apple: FaceTime: This update fixes an issue where users might not be able to approve or decline a FaceTime link call because notifications might not be received on the caller side for them to accept or decline the call.  Mac (Designed for iPad) Apps: This update fixes an issue where macOS might launch the wrong version for (Designed for iPad) apps after double-clicking the icon or after building from Xcode. Besides that‚ BGR hasn't found anything new with macOS 14.5 beta. With macOS 14.4‚ Apple also didn't bring many new features. Still‚ Cupertino expanded multiple timers on macOS Sonoma with all ringtones currently available on the iPhone. Previously‚ only the classic tones were available. For Apple Music‚ Books‚ and Podcasts apps‚ Apple switched the Listen Now tab to Home. In addition‚ macOS 14.4 added 28 new emojis. Most of the figures are skin tone modifiers and gender variants. Still‚ the new emojis include a lime‚ shaking heads‚ a phoenix‚ and four new gender-neutral family emojis intended to be represented via silhouettes. Podcasts Episode text can be read in full‚ searched for a word or phrase‚ clicked to play from a specific point‚ and used with accessibility features such as Text Size‚ Increase Contrast‚ and Voice Over. It also brought Business Updates in Messages for Business‚ which lets you get updates that you’ve opted into‚ like order status‚ flight notifications‚ fraud alerts‚ or other transactions from trusted businesses. Finally‚ Safari Favorites Bar adds an option to show only icons for websites. BGR will keep following the latest changes with macOS 14.5 beta 2‚ and we’ll let you know if we discover anything new. Alongside macOS 14.5 beta 4‚ Apple has also seeded the fourth testing version of iOS 17.5‚ iPadOS 17.5‚ watchOS 10.5‚ tvOS 17.5‚ and visionOS 1.2. visionOS 1.2 beta 4 now available to Apple Vision Pro devs

A week after visionOS 1.2 beta 3‚ Apple is now seeding its fourth testing version. Although it’s unclear what’s new with this update‚ Apple is still working on making its first spatial computer more reliable to users.  When Apple started beta testing visionOS 1.2‚ it also made available to visionOS 1.1 users a new Spatial Personas feature. With it‚ you no longer see other people’s Personas in a box but moving freely in the environment. This feature is especially useful with SharePlay as you can watch a movie together‚ play games‚ and more. With that‚ you can take advantage of the beautiful Apple Vision Pro display‚ and when you look at your side‚ there are other people with you‚ making this experience more immersive. Besides that‚ Apple is likely making improvements on overall stability‚ app improvements‚ and other bug fixes with visionOS 1.2 beta 4. With visionOS 1.1‚ Apple added Device Management to Vision Pro. With that‚ IT departments can manage these headsets in the same way they manage other Apple devices. Another change for visionOS 1.1 was the ability to reset this spatial computer if the user forgets the password. This has also become available with the latest visionOS 1.0.3 version. Several users have reported that Apple has also improved FaceTime digital personas and the passthrough image of the real world. Although it’s unclear how much Apple will still be able to improve‚ the company also highlighted tips and tricks to ensure this device captures your best persona. Here’s what you need to have in mind: Capturing won’t start until you’re holding your Apple Vision Pro at eye level. If you don’t start the capture within 15 minutes‚ it’s canceled. You can restart the capture after you put your Apple Vision Pro back on. Find a space with front-facing‚ even lighting so there aren’t shadows on your face. Avoid bright light sources overhead or in the background. Stand or sit in front of a simple‚ neutral background without too many details. Stay in the same location and position during the capture process. Relax your shoulders while holding Apple Vision Pro. Natural‚ genuine facial expressions produce the best results. Alongside visionOS 1.2 beta 4‚ Apple has also released the fourth testing version of iOS 17.5‚ iPadOS 17.5‚ watchOS 10.5‚ macOS 14.5‚ and tvOS 17.5. BGR will let you know if we discover anything new with visionOS 1.2. Don't Miss: visionOS: Features‚ beta‚ release date‚ Apple Vision Pro‚ more The post visionOS 1.2 beta 4 now available to Apple Vision Pro devs appeared first on BGR. watchOS 10.5 beta 4 now available with bug fixes

watchOS 10.5 beta 4 is now available to Apple Watch users. After a mild update with watchOS 10.4‚ it seems this next version won’t bring many changes as Apple prepares for the watchOS 11 preview in June. So far‚ Apple says watchOS 10.5 beta 4 fixes an issue where the Terms of Service button when viewing a subscription could cause a crash when tapped. Other than that‚ Apple isn’t adding anything new to this operating system. With watchOS 10.4‚ Apple added 28 new emojis. Although the new figures include a lime‚ shaking heads‚ a phoenix‚ and four new gender-neutral family emojis intended to be represented via silhouettes‚ skin tone modifiers‚ and gender variants represent the majority of new emojis. They can be used in iMessage and other messaging apps with your Apple Watch. Besides that‚ watchOS 10.4 added a new tweak for Apple Vision Pro users. Since both devices rely on double-tap gestures‚ you can turn on the Ignore Double Tap setting when using Apple’s spatial computer. Here’s how Apple describes this feature: “When this is on‚ the double tap gesture will be temporarily ignored while using Vision Pro.” For those unaware‚ pinching your fingers is the way you control Apple Vision Pro‚ but if you double tap your fingers‚ this is also how you can control Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. Thankfully‚ the owners of both newer Apple Watches and Vision Pro won’t have this issue for longer. watchOS 10.4 also brought improvements to Siri‚ as you can now wake the personal assistant with only its name by saying “Siri” instead of “Hey Siri.” In addition‚ Siri can read incoming messages in multiple languages‚ including Spanish‚ Portuguese‚ French‚ German‚ and more. Alongside watchOS 10.5 beta 4‚ Apple is also seeding the fourth beta testing of iOS 17.5‚ iPadOS 17.5‚ macOS 14.5‚ tvOS 17.5‚ and visionOS 1.2 to developers. We’ll let you know if we find anything new with these updates. tvOS 17.5 beta 4 now available as Apple prepares for main tvOS 18 update

tvOS 17.5 beta 4 is now available to everyone with an Apple TV that can run tvOS. At this moment‚ it’s unclear what this operating system update offers‚ as we couldn’t find anything new. Apple also hasn’t provided release notes so far. That said‚ it doesn’t seem tvOS 17.5 beta will bring anything major‚ as Apple is already preparing for the tvOS 18 update. We’ll discover more about this operating system on June 10 with the WWDC 2024 keynote. With tvOS 17.4‚ Apple also brought a mild beta cycle‚ although it was full of references for unreleased products and operating systems. With beta 1‚ the company added references to unreleased homeOS software. Most likely‚ this software could be used for a HomePod with a screen. Bloomberg and other outlets have reported on a HomePod with iPad integration‚ like an Amazon Echo Show product. Apple is also apparently working on a HomePod with a circular display. That said‚ instead of the current wave animations that we have on the HomePod‚ we could see music and weather data‚ for example. That would come in handy‚ as tvOS 17.4 beta was adding a SharePlay feature for Apple Music. iPhone users could scan a QR code on the Apple Music app for the Apple TV and join a SharePlay session to add songs to a list and create a listening party. Unfortunately‚ Apple removed this function in the latest betas. It’s unclear if Apple might add this feature back with tvOS 17.5 beta 4. That said‚ HomePod Software 17.4 added a new feature for Siri. According to the release notes‚ “This update enables Siri to learn your preferred media service‚ so you no longer need to include the name of the media app in your request.” With that‚ if you use Pandora or YouTube Music‚ you don’t need to ask the HomePod to play a song on that streaming‚ as Siri will understand this is where you usually listen to songs. BGR will let you know if we discover anything new with tvOS 17.5 beta 4. Apple has also seeded the fourth testing versions of iOS 17.5‚ iPadOS 17.5‚ watchOS 10.5‚ macOS 14.5‚ and visionOS 1.2. Roku confirms home screen video ads are coming – here’s what that means

Roku's home screen has become one of the few bastions of peace and quiet on our screens as other streamers pack their apps with video ads‚ but the free ride will soon come to an end. Roku recently shared its Q1 2024 financial results‚ and during the earnings call‚ Roku's CEO Anthony Wood told investors that video ads are coming to the home screen. &;quot; To give you some examples of the kinds of things we’re looking at on the home screen‚ on the home screen today‚ there’s the premier video app we called the Marquee and that traditionally has been a static ad‚&;quot; Wood said. &;quot; We’re going to add video to that ad.&;quot; If you own a Roku TV or streaming player‚ you've probably seen that static ad on the side of the display when you're on the home screen. Here's what it looks like: Roku is bringing video ads to the home screen. Image source: Roku In the future‚ you might see a video ad there instead. We can only hope that it will be muted by default. Wood also added that this will be the first of multiple video ad units on the home screen‚ and that Roku is now &;quot;looking at other experiences we can add to the home screen that would be where we can innovate more video advertising.&;quot; Ad revenue is hugely important for Roku‚ so it's no surprise the company wants valuable video ads littering customers' screens instead of static images. We do not know when to expect these video ads or precisely what they'll look like‚ but when it comes to Roku's bottom line‚ the sooner‚ the better. In the meantime‚ enjoy the video-free home screen while it lasts. Notably‚ Wood did not discuss recent reports about Roku's patent for technology that would allow it to put ads on the screen any time you press pause. Presumably‚ home screen video ads are the priority at the moment‚ but we'll be keeping an eye out for these. The new iPad Pro’s surprise isn’t an OLED screen‚ but an M4 CPU

The new iPad Pro’s surprise isn’t an OLED screen‚ but an M4 CPU

A big iPad Pro rumor dropped over the weekend that I didn't see coming. A well-known Apple reporter said the OLED iPad Pro that will launch on May 7th will feature a new M4 System-on-Chip (SoC) instead of the expected M3 chipset. As stunning as the claim might have been‚ I realized it made complete sense. The OLED iPad Pro delay‚ the special launch event‚ and the short period between the iPad event and WWDC 2024... the M4 upgrade explains it all. Also‚ reporter Mark Gurman said the M4 upgrade is all about generative AI coming to Apple's ecosystem of devices. That's what ties everything together. However‚ while I saw these puzzle pieces making sense‚ we had no real evidence to support Gurman's claim. Now‚ however‚ it turns out Apple might have provided the missing pieces via its own code. Findings in iPadOS 17.5 beta files indicate that Apple is indeed skipping a generation of M-series chips and moving straight to the M4 in its upcoming OLED iPad Pro. Continue reading...
