Crime-ridden San Francisco opens 'free' taxpayer-funded grocery store

Crime-ridden San Francisco recently opened its first “Food Empowerment Market,” which offers residents “free” groceries funded by taxpayers.A Tuesday press release from Mayor London Breed’s (D) office announced the grand opening of the District 10 Community Market in Bayview-Hunters Point. The 4,000-square foot store is part of a pilot program providing “free and healthy multi-cultural groceries” to residents “experiencing food insecurity in the Southeast corridor of the City.”'If we didn’t tell you it was free you’d think you’d have to pay.'San Francisco Human Services Agency granted Bayview Hunters Point Multipurpose Senior Services a $5.5 million taxpayer-funded grant to stock the market with fresh produce. According to the city, the market will serve approximately 4,500 residents. Breed called the grand opening of the pilot location “a major step toward improving food access in a part of the City that has historically been a food desert.”“Equitable access to fresh and healthy food options is critical for communities to thrive and to ensure we take care of the City’s most vulnerable residents,” Breed added. Many grocery stores in the area have shuttered in large part due to high crime, particularly retail theft fueled by the rampant drug use and homelessness crisis. The closures recently prompted progressive lawmakers to propose a bill allowing residents to sue grocery stores that shutter without providing the community with a six-month notice. The market is open to residents of three San Francisco zip codes who receive public assistance, are referred by a community organization, and have dependents under 25 or have a qualified diet-related illness. Eligible residents will receive a grocery card from a nonprofit within the market’s referral network. Unlike food banks, which offer pre-packaged kits, residents will be able to peruse the aisles and select the groceries they would like. In addition to the taxpayer-funded grant, the market also relies on donations from grocery stores for shelf-stable items, the Center Square reported.Trent Rhorer, the executive director of SFHSA, stated, “Food Empowerment Markets, like the Community Market pilot that we are celebrating today, provide dignity and choice for people who experience food insecurity.”“By offering families and people with dietary restrictions the ability to choose healthy and culturally appropriate food options for themselves, rather than receiving food boxes that may not be tailored to their individual food choices and needs, we minimize food waste while also providing a better experience for residents,” Rhorer remarked.Geoffrea Morris, a senior consultant for the District 10 Market, told the Center Square that the market is meant to serve as “a supplemental source for food.”“Food stamps should be the primary source. This is a supplemental source especially close to the end of the month when families are facing the pain, especially with inflation,” Morris stated. “If we didn’t tell you it was free you’d think you’d have to pay.”Like Blaze News? New Starfield paid quest causes considerable community backlash

Few games make themselves as hard to love as Starfield. I say that as someone who’s sunk tons of hours into it - and continues to do so. Maybe it's masochism, maybe it’s just a love for the kind of RPG Bethesda makes, but there’s something about Starfield which draws me back time and time again. There’s plenty of others like me out there too, but a recent addition has proved extremely controversial with the already badly bruised community. Apple kicks off WWDC 2024 with Vision Pro: Here’s the visionOS 2 update

WWDC is easily one of the most anticipated tech events of the year, and the 2024 edition will probably be forever remembered as the year when Apple added its Apple Intelligence features to the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Vision Pro, and all the other operating systems the company controls. Seen as a late entrant in the AI space, Apple has a few unique advantages that could help it become one of the main players in the AI landscape despite the late entry. It all starts with visionOS 2, the first big OS update coming from WWDC 2024. That's a surprising placement for Apple's youngest operating system. Apple Vision Pro expanding to 9 more countries

After the release of Apple Vision Pro in the US in early February, Apple is now expanding this spatial computer to nine more countries. This announcement was made during WWDC 2024. With the Apple Vision Pro expansion, this spatial device is coming to China, Hong Kong, Japan, and more. Users in those regions can take advantage of the company's first spatial computer – and just before Apple launches the upcoming visionOS 2 update. Apple Vision Pro has a premium look by adding an aluminum frame and a high-end mesh for the head, close to what the AirPods Max offers. The design goal of Vision Pro is not to be isolated but to interact with others. The EyeSight shows your eyes and expressions through the outer display. Unlike other headsets, the enclosure is made of a singular piece of three-dimensional laminated glass that flows into an aluminum alloy frame that curves to wrap around the user’s face. The Light Seal flexes to conform to the user’s face, delivering a precise fit while blocking out stray light. Image source: Jonathan S. Geller The Headband provides cushioning, breathability, and stretch. The Fit Dial lets users adjust Apple Vision Pro precisely to their head. The device has two 4K micro OLED displays with 23 million pixels combined with over a dozen cameras, and it features a Digital Crown that the users can spin to switch between VR and AR modes. Apple’s spatial computer uses the company M2 processor, which Apple says “simultaneously runs visionOS, executes advanced computer vision algorithms, and delivers stunning graphics, all with incredible efficiency,” while the new R1 chip is specifically dedicated to processing input from the cameras, sensor, and microphones, streaming images to the displays within 12 milliseconds for a virtually lag-free, real-time view of the world. Apple Vision Pro includes 12 cameras and five sensors that are responsible for monitoring hand gestures, mapping the external environment, and recording spatial videos or taking photos. Apple says two cameras transmit real-world images using AR mode, while the others work for head and hand tracking and real-time 3D mapping. The company even added infrared flood illuminators to help hand tracking in low-light conditions. Like iPhones and iPads, Apple also included LiDAR depth sensors as well. Apple Vision Pro expansion: These are the countries getting this spatial computer Pre-orders for China mainland, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore beginning this Thursday, June 13, at 6 p.m. PT and availability beginning Friday, June 28. Customers in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom can pre-order Vision Pro beginning Friday, June 28, at 5 a.m. PT, with availability beginning Friday, July 12.
