MSNBC host Joe Scarborough suggested on Friday morning that it was time for President Joe Biden to step down as president of the United States following his disastrous debate performance against former President Donald Trump. “Well, I think I should start by saying, without any apologies, that I love Joe Biden and Jill, and I will gladly debate anybody, anytime, anyplace, anywhere, over the issue of whether Joe Biden has been the most effective president in passing bipartisan legislation, in expanding NATO, in responding to the rising threat coming from China, by flexing America’s strength around China, by having the strongest economy in the world, bar none, the strongest economy, actually, relative to the rest of the world in 50, 60, 70 years, the strongest dollar in half a century, the strongest military relative to the rest of the world,” Scarborough said. “I think his presidency has been an unqualified success.” “If, however, you believe, as do I, and as do so many people who watch this program, and who fear just how dark of a place a second Donald Trump term will take America, then I think it is critical that we ask the same questions about this man I love, respect, and whose — whose public service in saving this country from Donald Trump over the last three and a half years I honor and always will,” he continued. He asked if Joe Biden were a CEO and he performed the way that he did on Thursday night, “would any corporation in America, any Fortune 500 corporation in America, keep him on as CEO?” He said that Democrats had approached a moment where a trusted adviser needed to whisper in Biden’s ear that it was over. “The fact is, friends, failure is just not an option,” he said. “In 2024, failure is not an option. So who I love, who I respect, who I revere for their work, and their duty to service over their lifetime, really is not relevant. It’s not relevant for any of us. It’s not relevant for Democratic leaders. It’s not relevant for anyone. The question is, can, we know Joe Biden can govern. And again, I’ll debate that issue with anyone and I will win. Online betting markets shifted decisively in favor of former President Donald Trump beating President Joe Biden in a rematch this fall after Biden turned in a widely criticized performance during Thursday night’s debate. Prior to the debate, PredictIt listed Trump and Biden close with Trump edging out Biden, 53¢ to 48¢ in placed bets. However, once the debate started, Trump jolted up to a high of 61¢ while Biden cratered to a low of only 29¢. California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom saw his stock rise considerably on the betting site, jumping from only 5¢ to a high of 20¢ during the debate. However, the likelihood that Democrats can stop Biden from being the nominee is very low because they have no legal mechanisms to stop him. Even if they were to invoke the 25th Amendment and have him removed from office, which there was some talk about online following the debate, Biden still controls the delegates from the nomination process because he won the primary contests — thus he would still end up being the party’s nominee. Another site, BetOnline.ag, had Trump starting the debate as a -150 favorite and improving to -175 favorite by the end of the debate, according to the New York Post. Biden started the night a +130 underdog and fell significantly to +300 (or 3/1) after the debate. CNN broke down post-debate polling that the network conducted, which showed a significant shift in voters’ thoughts going into the night compared to their thoughts afterward. Before the debate started, voters expected Trump to win 55% to 45%. Following the debate, 67% said that Trump won, and only 33% said that Biden won. For contrast, during the 2020 presidential election, CNN’s polling found that voters believed Biden won the first debate, 60% to 28%, and the second, 53% to 39%. Only 14% of those who watched the debate said they had “a lot” of confidence in Biden’s ability to lead the country, while 36% said they had “a lot” of confidence in Trump. Overall, 56% said they had confidence in Trump, while only 43% said they had confidence in Biden.
