Visa and Mastercard agree to slash fees in $30B landmark settlement

Visa and Mastercard on Tuesday reached a landmark $30 billion settlement that will limit credit and debit card fees for merchants‚ with some savings likely to be passed on to consumers. The antitrust settlement is one of the largest in US history‚ and upon court approval would resolve claims in litigation that began in 2005. Merchants have accused Visa and Mastercard of charging inflated swipe fees‚ or interchange fees‚ when shoppers use their credit...

Visa and Mastercard agree $30bn settlement over US transaction fees

Visa and Mastercard have agreed to cut their US transaction fees in a landmark settlement that merchants say will save them $30bn over five years. The deal‚ announced on Tuesday‚ will require the payments companies to lower the so-called swipe fees they charge sellers over the next five years. It will also allow merchants to charge different prices to consumers based on which credit card they use. The settlement does not include a requirement for merchants to pass on the savings...

Biden’s Challenges in Reaching Young Voters on TikTok Include Anger Over Gaza

President Biden’s campaign is working to reach across the generation gap to the tens of millions of predominantly younger voters on TikTok‚ where the challenges are daunting and the rewards difficult to track. The obstacles range from anger over the war in Gaza to what social media experts describe as the unavoidably uncool nature of supporting the administration in power. Mr. Biden‚ 81‚ joined the app owned by a Chinese company last month‚ in what was widely seen as an effort...

Doctor blows minds by explaining why when your stomach growls it isn't always hunger

Just about everyone has had that embarrassing moment when their stomach growls super loud in a quiet room with a group of people. Whether it’s a business meeting or a lecture at school‚ someone always sarcastically comments‚ “Somebody’s hungry.” The funny thing is that even though a growling stomach seems like a tell-tale sign that you’re hungry‚ that’s not the reason why sometimes you can hear it rumble. Dr. Karan Raj recently explained what happens when your stomach growls in a TikTok video with over 1.9 million views. Dr. Karan Rajan is an NHS surgeon and one of social media's most popular health and science creators. He starts the video by debunking one of the major myths about stomach growls: that it's not your stomach. In fact‚ “it’s actually your intestines‚” Dr. Raj revealed. “Specifically‚ your small intestine.” @dr.karanr Demonic orchestra The big takeaway is that your intestines are constantly “contracting and squeezing digested food‚ called chyme‚ through your internal plumbing.” He likens it to squeezing a toothpaste tube to get the last drop out. “It happens 24/7‚” the doctor noted. “Most of the time‚ you can’t hear it unless you’re listening with a stethoscope.”So why is it that sometimes everyone can hear this process? “The reason why people think [hearing a stomach rumble] means you’re hungry is because it’s typically a lot louder when your digestive system is empty‚” Dr. Raj shared. While many people appreciated the explanation‚ some were pretty grossed out about learning the truth. “Thank you for this information; it makes me so uncomfortable. I might cry‚ but it’s so interesting!”Arantzi wrote.

After his daughter was born with the 'wrong' eye and hair color‚ a dad demanded a DNA test

After his daughter was born with the 'wrong' eye and hair color‚ a dad demanded a DNA test

The presumed father of a newborn baby was skeptical of his paternity after the baby girl was born with blonde hair and blue eyes. He and his wife of two years have brown hair and brown eyes‚ so he thought there was no chance it was his child. The wife reassured her husband that they could have a blonde-haired‚ blue-eyed baby and that‚ quite often‚ a baby’s hair and eye color can change over time. But the husband “freaked out at this and refused to listen‚” the wife wrote in a viral post on Reddit’s AITA page. Instead‚ he “demanded a paternity test and threatened to divorce me if I didn’t comply‚ so I did.”The man was so confident that after the baby was born‚ he moved into his mother’s house while he awaited the results of the DNA test. The wife stayed home with the baby and was helped through the first few weeks by her sister. To make things worse‚ the wife’s mother-in-law began to make threats. “My MIL called and informed me that if the paternity test revealed that the child wasn’t his‚ she would do anything within her power to make sure that I was ‘taken to the cleaners’ during the divorce‚” the mom shared on Reddit. Finally‚ three weeks after the child was born‚ the DNA test results arrived and the husband came home to read them with his wife. “I was on the couch in the living room‚ so he sat next to me and we started to read the results‚” she wrote. “They showed that he was the father and my husband had this shocked‚ kinda mortified look on his face with his eyes wide as he stared at it.”The wife said‚ “I told you so‚” and laughed in his face. In the post‚ the wife also notes she has “zero history” of cheating.Although it is rare for two people with brown eyes and brown hair to have a blue-eyed‚ blonde-haired baby‚ it is entirely possible. According to Verywell Health‚ there is a 19% chance that a couple with brown eyes can have a blue-eyed baby. And‚ as the wife noted earlier‚ a baby’s eye color can change over its first year of life.Further‚ two people with brown hair can have a blonde-haired child if both parents carry the recessive gene for blonde hair. The blonde hair may darken over time as well.If the father had done a quick Google search on the topic‚ he would have quickly realized that there was a very strong case that he was the father and the drama could have stopped before any damage was done to the marriage. The positive part of this story is that the wife’s post on Reddit earned her a ton of support from people who thought her husband’s antics were utterly inappropriate. The support probably also helped to put her husband's wild antics into perspective while she determined their future. The wife felt bad about laughing at her husband‚ but most people thought it was appropriate‚ given her husband's behavior.“Not only doesn’t he have a basic grasp of genetics‚ he threw a tantrum and left you immediately after having the baby to struggle alone for almost a month‚” CrystalQueen3000 commented. “He’s lucky all you did was laugh in his face.”A lot of commenters thought that the woman should leave her husband for accusing her of cheating and leaving her alone with the child.“Honestly‚ if my husband left me for weeks after giving birth due to a faint assumption like this‚ I would be done. I can't be together with someone who abandoned me when I needed them desperately‚” Matakakiba wrote. This article originally appeared on 1.5.24

Dad prevents morning meltdowns with adorable nightly outfit presentations to his daughter

Preschool power struggles aren’t fun for anyone involved. But the morning meltdown over clothes is its own circle of parenting hell. Between dealing with every fabric under the sun triggering sensory issues to having to explain for the millionth time that‚ no‚ a tutu‚ a princess crown and a Supergirl cape does not constitute as an outfit to never‚ ever ever ever finding matching socks…it’s a miracle that every parent doesn’t just let their kids run around naked. But one dad has successfully thwarted outfit anxiety with his nightly presentation of outfit options for his five-year-old to choose from for the following day. Is it adorable? Absolutely. But more importantly‚ it’s effective. In a clip posted to TikTok Cindy Camponovo‚ we see her husband playing personal stylist to their young daughter‚ laying out the details of each look. There’s “pink and flower power girl” with matching Nikes‚ “Polo prep with matching navy loafers‚” “a beautiful pearl option with Barbie‚” and last but not least‚ a “cool kid on the block with skinny jeans‚ BAPE sweater and matching red shoes.”“It’s the fact she has him presenting like it’s shark tank 🦈✨‚” one person joked. The pretend client perused through her curated ensembles before selecting “pink and flower power girl.” They then shake on it‚ thus sealing the deal.“And you're going to lock it in? So no arguing in the morning guys?” Camponovo asks.“No‚ no arguing tomorrow morning. Okay. This is recorded for quality assurance‚ okay?” her husband quips. Seems like all crises are averted. @cindycamponovo What my husband does every night because their morning tears &; arguments about school outfits scarred him #pickingoutfits #preschool #girldad #outfitideas #fypã‚· ♬ Cena Engraçada e Inusitada de 3 Minutos - HarmonicoHCO Over 1.2 million people have seen Camponovo’s video‚ and countless viewers left comments in praise of her husband. For his creativity‚ his sense of style and for being a great girl dad.“Wait he chose really cute outfits!!” one person wrote.“She looked like she relishes the attention. She is loved and adored‚” another wrote.Another added‚ “Holy heck talk about doing it right mom and dad.”And of course‚ nearly everyone was wondering if Camponovo’s husband was taking on other styling clients. He’s clearly got a knack for it.While clothing tantrums are aggravating‚ they are completely normal. According to psychologist Dr. Jim Taylor‚ clothing is often a child’s “first declaration of independence and first assertion of their own unique personalities.”But the good news is: there are ways to help avoid the drama. If playing personal stylist doesn’t appeal to you‚ Today.com suggested the following: -Taking a photo of your child’s favorite outfits and creating an album for you to peruse together for choices. This -Investing in an efficient organizing system like a days-of-the-week organizer‚ which can allow you to choose outfits a week ahead of time. -Creating a reward system for when kids get dressed quickly and without a tantrum. Who doesn't love rewards?-Putting your own favorite clothes on top of the dresser‚ so they’re easier for your little ones to spot. -Creating a “menu” of ideas‚” which gives leeway for kids to be a part of the decision making process. …honestly‚ these are good ideas both for parents with choosy kids‚ and for grown adults with too many clothes. (i.e.‚ me.)

Dog mom shares a funny video of the 'chores' her pitbull pup thinks she’s doing

Dogs are naturally driven by a sense of purpose and a need for belonging‚ which are all part of their instinctual pack behavior. When a dog has a job to do‚ it taps into its needs for structure‚ purpose‚ and the feeling of contributing to its pack‚ which in a domestic setting translates to its human family. But let’s be honest: In a traditional domestic setting‚ dogs have fewer chores they can do as they would on a farm or as part of a rescue unit. A doggy mom in Vancouver Island‚ Canada had fun with her dog’s purposeful uselessness by sharing the 5 “chores” her pitbull-Lab mix does around the house. The mom says Rhubarb has chores because “we didn’t raise a freeloader.”No freeloaders on my watch 🙅🏻‍♀️  @rhubarbthedoggo No freeloaders on my watch 🙅🏻‍♀️ #pittiesoftiktok #dogtiktokers #dogsoftiktok #pitbulllove #pibblelove #pibbles #pibblemixesoftiktok #pitbullmix #dogfluencers #doggotiktoker #dogmomsoftiktok #dogmomlife #dogmoms #dogtiktokviral #dogmomma #prettypitty #prettypittie #prettypitties #dogrelatable #relatabledogmom #relatabledog Here are 5 “chores” that Rhubarb has mastered.1. Makes sure the laundry doesn't get coldTranslation: Sits on top of the clean laundry‚ ready to be folded.2. Unlicensed therapistTranslation: Gives us kisses when we're tired or feeling down.3. Supervise repairsTranslation: She gets in the way when you're in a compromised‚ uncomfortable position with a wrench in your hand.4. Alerts us when there's an intruderTranslation: Stands at the window and barks furiously at the mailman.5. Keeps mum's spot warmTranslation: Lays in her spot on her favorite chair in the living room. The video inspired some funny responses in the comments.“He’s carrying that household on his back. Give him a raise‚” Tatiana‚ Esq. wrote. “Obviously the most valuable member of the household‚” DJTrainor51 added.

Dog refuses to walk with her mom‚ but miraculously‚ her legs 'work with Grandma'

What gives dogs the right to have such big and hilarious personalities? It seems like these dogs have found a way to make their humans laugh while also annoying them until they're ready to come apart. It's truly a skill that only dogs and toddlers seem to possess in great quantities.Zoe is a pit bull with a bombastic side-eye that makes it clear that she only tolerates her mother‚ Raven‚ but adores her grandmother‚ Yonika. There is no confusion about who her favorite person is‚ and Zoe's grandmother only seems to encourage the behavior. The two of them are the best of friends‚ and Mom...well‚ she's the third wheel.Sure‚ Zoe likes her mom a little—she does feed her‚ after all—but the verdict is still being determined if love can be claimed. Raven can't even convince the sassy pittie to go on a walk with her. Zoe lays on the ground like a chubby little pancake any time her mom tries to take her for a walk. Raven has even pulled on her leash‚ slowly dragging the dog down the hallway‚ but Zoe insists that her legs do not remember how to work. But as soon as Grandma takes the leash‚ a miracle occurs. Suddenly Zoe is a spry whippersnapper with four working legs and a happy tail."She refuses to walk whenever I take her outside‚" Raven explains. But that's just not the case for Grandma‚ and there really doesn't seem to be an explanation for it other than preference. "When I'm around‚ she is an absolute angel. She listens‚" Yonika says.In fact‚ Raven says when Grandma is around‚ Zoe completely ignores her so she can continue getting Grandma cuddles. This dog has mastered the side-eye‚ and Grandma is only assisting in her snubbing her mom in the cutest way. It's something you have to witness for yourself to fully appreciate‚ so check out the video below. This article originally appeared on 7.19.23

Man's reaction to hearing his stepdaughter call him 'Dad' is an emotional masterpiece

Being a parent is often a thankless job‚ and being a stepparent is usually even more thankless. But most parents show up and do their best to make sure their kids have what they need and feel loved. So when our kids do or say something to show appreciation‚ it melts our hearts—but nothing melts it faster than a stepchild calling their bonus parent "Mom" or "Dad" for the first time. A creator named Shane posted a clip from a longer video showing his reaction to hearing his stepdaughter call him "Dad" for the first time. The full video is about three years old‚ but when it was reposted as a clip recently‚ it pulled on everyone's heartstrings. Shane and his wife‚ Liana‚ run the social media pages Shane and Liana where they post silly videos pranking each other. But this video wasn't a prank. His stepdaughter‚ London‚ wanted to surprise him after wanting to call him "Dad" for a long time. She can barely contain her excitement in the clip‚ squealing loudly when climbing into the back seat. When Shane gets in the car‚ London knows this is her chance."Hi Dad‚ how was your day?" she asks.Shane turns completely around in shock as the heartwarming realization of what she just called him sets in. "Did you just call me Dad? Just made my heart melt to know she called me Dad‚" Shane says full of emotion. London and Liana explain earlier in the video that Shane has raised the little girl since she was 2 years old. She didn't meet her biological father until she was 5‚ and he was only in her life briefly before leaving‚ so this was a big moment. Viewers under the newly re-uploaded clip revealed that watching the interaction made them just as emotional as Shane."Idk how the mom ain't crying!?! I'm crying‚" Mari Morales writes."This video hits me right in the heart and soul‚" Sarah Douglas writes. "My 'step' dad raised me from 7 years old. I’ve never met the sperm donor once‚ but my REAL dad is the one that chose to love me regardless of biology. Forever grateful for the real men that 'step' up to be there for us.""So true the first time my oldest daughter called me dad I cried she’s not blood but she is mine no matter what‚" Timothy Evans says. London historian shares why Victorian-era money was extra complicated to count

If you had a time machine and woke up in Victorian-era London (1837-1901)‚ you would have difficulty breathing because of the air quality. You'd also walk around plugging your nose because of the poor sanitation and probably be very confused when purchasing anything because of the monetary system. J. Draper‚ a London historian and tour guide‚ explained why money was so different in the Victorian era in a popular YouTube video with nearly 300‚000 views. “Let me try and explain how pounds‚ shillings and pence worked‚” J Draper opens her video. First‚ in modern-day England‚ they have two units of money‚ pounds and new pence‚ which work like dollars and cents. One hundred pence equals one dollar. However‚ back in the Victorian era‚ there was a third unit of money between pence and pounds called the shilling. The shilling was phased out starting in 1971.To give an example of how money worked in Victorian England‚ she shared the example of journalist Henry Mayhew‚ who in 1851 said it costs 21 pounds (£)‚ 9 shilling (s) and 11 pence (d‚ for denarius) to set yourself up as a baked potato seller. Written out‚ the cost looks like this: £21 9s 11d.The breakdown goes like this: 12 pence are in a shilling and 20 shillings make a pound. To further complicate things‚ there were two more units of money in the 19th century: the 1/4 pence‚ known as a farthing and a 1/2 pence‚ known as a half penny (pronounced "haypnee")."I hope this helps‚ but like with any measurement system‚ there's no substitute for just practicing it‚" J. Draper concludes her video.
