Talk show host Phil Donahue, who championed various leftist perspectives on his eponymous TV show and changed the industry by interacting with his studio audience, has died at the age of 88. Donahue’s second wife, former actress Marlo Thomas, to whom he was married for 44 years, was with him and Donahue’s children and grandchildren when he died at his home on Sunday night. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Donahue graduated from Notre Dame before starting his broadcasting career, first at KYW-AM TV, then WABJ in Michigan as program/news director, then at WHIO-AM-TV in Dayton as a reporter. The trans–identifying creator of the viral TikTok trend “very demure” said all the attention and new followers will be used to help fund his “transition” surgery.  Jools Lebron, a biological man, is credited with starting the new trend of calling certain actions “demure.” Lebron’s social media videos have gone viral, with celebrity X accounts and the White House jumping on the “very demure” bandwagon.  The original clip was shared on TikTok in early August. It shows Lebron putting on makeup while narrating the process. “You see how I do my makeup for work? Very demure, very mindful. I don’t do too much. I’m very mindful while I’m at work. See how I look very presentable? The Democratic National Committee released its 2024 platform on Sunday just before the kickoff of the party convention in Chicago this week, and it still names President Joe Biden as the party’s nominee. The DNC said that the platform was passed by the Platform Committee on July 16, just five days before Biden announced the end of his campaign and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. Democratic Party delegates will vote on the Biden-centered policy platform at the convention on Monday evening despite Democrats rallying behind a new candidate. “President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Democrats are running to finish the job,” the DNC platform states. “To grow our economy from the middle out and bottom up, not the top down. To reward work, not wealth. To lower costs. To tackle the climate crisis, lower energy costs, and secure energy independence. To protect communities and tackle the scourge of gun violence. To secure the border and fix the broken immigration system. To advance the President’s Unity Agenda. To strengthen American leadership worldwide.” Harris and her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz have been criticized for staying quiet on specific policy positions during the first few weeks of their presidential campaign. The Harris campaign website still does not have a policy platform. Harris even admitted that grocery prices have increased under the Biden-Harris administration but blamed companies unfairly “price gouging.” Last week, the Democratic nominee laid out some economic policy goals for her administration if she wins in November, pushing food price controls and federal handouts to first-time homeowners. Wade and states, “President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Democrats are fighting back to restore reproductive freedom for every woman in every state.” On gender issues, the party’s platform touts Biden’s protecting “transgender Americans’ access to health care and coverage, including medically necessary gender-affirming care.”

Between the total solar eclipse and the widely viewed aurora borealis this year, 2024 is proving to be full of rare celestial events. Soon, we can add August’s full moon to this growing list. Although a monthly full moon isn’t unique in and of itself, there are two reasons why this one is different than most. First, there’s the fact that this will be a supermoon. This name indicates that the moon will be closer than normal — within 90% of its closest approach to Earth, to be more specific. This fact is cool alone, but it also means we’ll be getting spectacular views. Not only will the full moon appear to be much larger, it’ll even shine brighter. If you’ve seen supermoons in the past, you’ll understand why they’re such a beautiful sight to behold. But the size and brightness aren’t the only reasons to be excited for tonight’s full moon — it’s also a blue moon! Instead, it indicates a rarity in the number of full moons in a season. Usually, we get three. But every two to three years, we’ll see four. Both a supermoon and blue moon are rare events — but both of them happening at the same time is exceptionally rare.
