Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory: Are There Really People Who Never Forget?

For a select group, forgetting what happened the day you graduated or that time you tripped over in front of your crush isn't an option.

Planets Without Plate Tectonics Could Still Be Habitable

It has been thought that the existence of plate tectonics has been a significant factor in the shaping of our planet and the evolution of life. Mars and Venus don’t experience such movements of crustal plates but then the differences between the worlds is evident. The exploration of exoplanets too finds many varied environments. Many of these new alien worlds seem to have significant internal heating and so lack plate movements too. Instead a new study reveals that these ‘Ignan Earths’ are more likely to have heat pipes that channel magma to she surface. The likely result is a surface temperature similar to Earth in its hottest period when liquid water started forming. Plate tectonics explains the movement and interaction of the Earth’s upper layers. More accurately, the lithosphere which is composed of the crust and upper layer of the mantle. It is divided into a number of pieces known as tectonic plates which float around on the semi-fluid layer below called the asthenosphere. Where the plates meet, various geological features form such as mountains, volcanoes and trenches. The process has been a crucial factor in the evolution of life on our planet. The shifting of landmasses has created new habitats and caused populations to become isolated allowing for individual ecosystems to form. A typical “black smoker” volcanic vent here on Earth. Collisions of plates led to mountain range development which influenced the weather patterns and climate. Volcanic activity driven by plate movement led to soils becoming fertile, plant life to flourish and the release of gasses like carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that helped the planet regulate its climate. It really has been a crucial process in the evolution of our planet. In some respects the process also stops a planet’s internal environment from overheating. There is a train of thought that if Earth didn’t have such plate movement then it may be too hot internally for a stable environment to evolve. This was the subject of the paper by Matthew Reinhold and Laura Schaefer that was published in Advancing Earth and Space Sciences. They explored the liklihood that such a world might have so much internal heating that instead, it would resemble bodies like Jupiter’s moon Io. Here we see intense levels of volcanism where laval violently erupts hundreds of kilometres into the atmosphere which is full of toxic gasses. It’s not just a lack of plate tectonics that can lead to high levels of internal heating. Tidal effects can cause worlds to have one face constantly pointing to the Sun giving a wide range of surface temperatures. Collectively these worlds are known casually as Ignan Earth’s and they are the target of the paper, to explore whether they are habitable. Exploring the geology of the bodies in our Solar System gives great insight. The team demonstrate that it is likely that worlds with high internal temperatures will develp a solid mantle. The crust will remain largely stable as a result with the only likely activity, heat-pipe tectonics – where some of the internal heat is transferred to the surface for example from volcanic activity. The team were able to model the the likely surface temperature range based upon a number of different types of world and found that, contrary to previous expectations, a wide range of internal heating rates may well lead to worlds where the environment is conducive to habitability. Trump gets chummy with Obama at Carter funeral, leaving Kamala Harris scowling

Five living presidents and a handful of failed presidential candidates attended Jimmy Carter's funeral Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral. Kamala Harris, once touted as the "female Barack Obama," did not appear pleased to see the real Barack Obama enjoying the company of President-elect Donald Trump. Footage has gone viral showing Harris' reaction to the sight of Obama, the elder Democrat who supported her political ambitions for over 15 years, engaging with the very Republican who crushed her dreams in the 2024 presidential election. In the video, Harris turns to the apparent sound of civil chatter, spotting Trump lean into Obama's commentary. The California Democrat appears to roll her eyes, turn forward in her seat with a grimace, then try to assign her focus elsewhere, paging through the funeral program. 'Obama casually and amiably chats with Adolf Hitler.' Conservative columnist Joe Cocha noted on X, "Going to file this under 'death stare' from Kamala to Obama/Trump during the Carter funeral, who are getting along swimmingly. It's like watching Carson and Rickles, these two." CNN's Kaitlan Collins noted, "These are just moments that you don't see hardly ever." While many commentators focused on Harris' poor reaction, others noted Obama's apparent comfort joking around with an individual he previously called a "fascist" and has long characterized as a villain. Journalist Glenn Greenwald captioned the video, "Former President Barack Obama casually and amiably chats with Adolf Hitler as the latter is set to assume power in 11 days, end American democracy, and impose a white nationalist dictatorship." Terry Schilling, president of the American Principles Project, said in response to a video from the event showing Obama chuckling at commentary from Trump, "This is what happens when you win. Obama knows more than anyone how much he rigged the game against Trump and knows how tough Trump has to be to have pulled off this miracle." Trump was seated between his wife, Melania, and Obama. Obama, who apparently went stag as his wife, Michelle Obama, is in Hawaii, was flanked on his right by Laura Bush, George W. Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Bill Clinton. After sitting alone in the front row for several minutes, Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were joined by President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill. ABC News noted that Harris did not greet the incoming president. Jimmy Carter, eulogized by his sons and by Biden, was the 39th president of the United States. He perished in his Georgia home at the age of 100 on Dec. 29. Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!

City sues California over sanctuary law fueling violent crime spike: 'Clear and present danger'

The City of Huntington Beach filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against California, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), and state Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) over the state's sanctuary law that shields illegal aliens from federal immigration authorities. The lawsuit argued that California Senate Bill 54, signed into law by former Gov. Jerry Brown (D) in 2017, is "unconstitutional" and prohibits local jurisdictions from complying with federal immigration laws. 'Huntington Beach will not sit idly by and allow the obstructionist Sanctuary State Law to put our 200,000 residents at risk of harm from those who seek to commit violent crimes on US soil.'"California's Sanctuary State Law not only limits the ability of City officials, including Huntington Beach Police personnel, to engage in fullest of effective law enforcement practices, but it directs City officials, including Huntington Beach Police personnel, to violate U.S. Federal immigration laws," the complaint read. The lawsuit attributes the rise in violent crime and the increased presence of illegal alien gang members in the United States to sanctuary policies, arguing that SB 54 "is a clear and present danger to the health, safety, and welfare" of residents. It noted that crime has been rising in California since 2018, the same year the sanctuary law went into effect.SB 54 prohibits local law enforcement agencies from transferring illegal aliens to Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. It also bans them from notifying ICE about inmate release dates.Such policies force federal immigration agents to locate and detain illegal aliens after they have been released back onto the streets. This approach is both costlier and far more dangerous than allowing ICE agents to enter the local jails to transfer inmates to federal custody.President-elect Donald Trump's previous administration sued California over its sanctuary law in 2018; however, it was struck down in court.Huntington Beach Mayor Pat Burns stated, "We are fighting the Sanctuary State Law because it obstructs our ability to fully enforce the law and keep our community safe.""When the stakes are currently so high, with reports of increases in human trafficking, increases in foreign gangs taking over apartment buildings in the U.S., killing, raping, and committing other violent crimes against our citizens, we need every possible resource available to fight crime, including federal resources," he continued. "Huntington Beach will not sit idly by and allow the obstructionist Sanctuary State Law to put our 200,000 residents at risk of harm from those who seek to commit violent crimes on U.S. soil."City attorney Michael Gates called Huntington Beach's lawsuit "incredibly strong," claiming that California's sanctuary law "violates the Supremacy and Naturalization Clauses of the U.S. Constitution, forces our City officials to violate federal immigration laws under 8 U.S. Code, Sections 1324 and 1373, and 18 U.S. Code, Sections 371 and 372.""It is unfortunate that we have to fight the State of California in order to achieve sound and effective law enforcement policies. We will continue to fight for the safety of our community relentlessly and with vigor," Gates added.A spokesperson for Bonta's office told the Voice of OC, "The Attorney General is committed to protecting and ensuring the rights of California's immigrant communities and upholding vital laws like SB 54.""Our office successfully fought back against a challenge to SB 54 by the first Trump administration, and we are prepared to vigorously defend SB 54 again," the spokesperson said.Like Blaze News? Meta will allow 'allegations of mental illness' regarding transgenderism and sexuality under new community guidelines

Meta's new community standards for hateful conduct will allow criticisms of the mental state of those claiming to be transgender. The rule changes come after founder Mark Zuckerberg announced sweeping changes to Meta's approach to moderation, saying the company had reached a point where there have been too many mistakes that resulted in "censorship.""Even if [our filters] accidentally censor just 1% of posts, that's millions of people," Zuckerberg said.As such, Zuckerberg and company have decided to allow more discourse on political and religious grounds.Under its update to policy rationale for hateful conduct rules, Meta said it still removes "dehumanizing speech, allegations of serious immorality or criminality, and slurs."The company continued, "We also remove harmful stereotypes, which we define as dehumanizing comparisons that have historically been used to attack, intimidate, or exclude specific groups, and that are often linked with offline violence."'We do allow content arguing for gender-based limitations of military, law enforcement, and teaching jobs.'However, under the section that deals with targeting other Meta users due to their characteristics, Meta said it will protect against "political exclusion, which means denying the right to political participation or arguing for incarceration or denial of political rights."The rules continued, stating that insulting people for their inherent intellectual capacity is not allowed but allegations of mental illness in regard to sexual orientation will be allowed:We do allow allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation, given political and religious discourse about transgenderism and homosexuality and common non-serious usage of words like "weird."The platforms will also allow content that argues for gender-based limitations, including in the military and teaching."We do allow content arguing for gender-based limitations of military, law enforcement, and teaching jobs. We also allow the same content based on sexual orientation, when the content is based on religious beliefs," Meta wrote."Social exclusion," which included denying access to spaces based on sex or gender, is actually allowed under the new guidelines."Denying access to spaces (physical and online) and social services [is not allowed], except for sex or gender-based exclusion from spaces commonly limited by sex or gender, such as restrooms, sports and sports leagues, health and support groups, and specific schools."At the same time, other basic allegations against individuals, including calling them cowards, dishonest, or sexually promiscuous, is not allowed.Meta appeared to have made room for satirical content as well, a subject that has been a clear issue with left-leaning social platforms in recent history. Certain content will be allowed to violate Meta's community standards if it is deemed satirical, but only if the content is "being satirized or attributed to something or someone else in order to mock or criticize them."Meta closed its new policy rationale by noting that those in the European Union can submit removal requests if they believe certain content violates "hate speech laws" within their country.Like Blaze News?
