Mercury Could Have A Layer of Diamonds 11-Miles Thick Beneath the Surface

A bi-disciplinary scientific study has revealed the likely presence of a layer of diamonds 11 miles thick at the boundary layer of Mercury’s core and mantle. It was a remarkable finding, and came from what is the least understood planet in the solar system, despite being one of the closest to Earth. Diamonds are forever—a […] The post Mercury Could Have A Layer of Diamonds 11-Miles Thick Beneath the Surface appeared first on Good News Network.

Creators of Riverdale and One Piece Will Now Bring You … a Bat Boy Series

News Bat Boy Creators of Riverdale and One Piece Will Now Bring You … a Bat Boy Series Not that kind of batman By Molly Templeton | Published on August 2, 2024 Screenshot: The CW Comment 0 Share New Share Screenshot: The CW Gotta admit, I did not see this one coming. Deadline has the news that Netflix is developing a Bat Boy series—yes, that Bat Boy, of Weekly World News in the ’90s fame—from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Riverdale, pictured above) and Joe Tracz (One Piece). If anyone is going to make Bat Boy fly, it’s probably these two. Aguirre-Sacasa co-created Riverdale and created Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and thus has spent considerable time in the supernatural-high-school-wacky-drama trenches. Tracz is co-showunner of Netflix’s popular One Piece, also a writer and producer on Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and was a writer on A Series of Unfortunate Events. Deadline notes that while yes, there was a Bat Boy musical, this new series is entirely unrelated. Here’s how they describe the series: In the coming-of-age series adaptation, the titular character is a teen named Bobby Bates. With the help of fellow teens Charisma and her weird sister Olive, Bobby re-enters mainstream society after living in seclusion on the outskirts in the remnants of a long-dissipated carnival. When Bobby enrolls at Cypressville High, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery while attempting to find his place among his new peers and society and trying to solve a mystery bubbling up from the Florida swamps. All that while rocking his half-bat-like features like sharp teeth and pointy ears — oh, there’s also the small matter of his need for human blood. Think, Edward Scissorhands meets Nightmare Alley-ish. I feel like that “ish” is doing a lot here. Weekly World News CEO/editor-in-chief Greg D’Alessandro will be one of the show’s producers, should it fly up and out of the development phase and onto Netflix subscribers’ screens.[end-mark] The post Creators of <i>Riverdale</i> and <i>One Piece</i> Will Now Bring You … a Bat Boy Series appeared first on Reactor.

Blue Fugates: Why Did A Family In Kentucky Have Blue Skin?

In the 1820s there lived a couple in Kentucky whose family would become known as the Blue Fugates. Why? Because they carried a rare genetic condition that gave several members of the family blue skin.Yes, really. What caused the Blue Fugates' blue skin? The highly unusual condition is known as methemoglobinemia. It’s characterized by elevated levels of a form of hemoglobin called methemoglobin, which has iron in the ferric state rather than the ferrous state – a crucial difference that prevents oxygen from binding to it.Most of us have a very small amount of methemoglobin in the blood as our bodies have mechanisms for converting it back into normal, oxygen-carrying hemoglobin. However, in rare cases these mechanisms are disrupted, causing the levels of methemoglobin to rise and leading to methemoglobinemia.Methemoglobinemia is when levels of methemoglobin are unusually high. The symptoms include blue skin, purple lips, and blood that is chocolate brown. The Blue Fugates GenesCases of methemoglobinemia are more commonly acquired, meaning the condition developed as a consequence of exposure to certain chemicals or drugs – but in rare cases, it can be inherited. This was the case for the Blue Fugates, who had not one but two parents who carried the rare genetic trait.Martin Fugate moved to Troublesome Creek, Kentucky, around 1820. He married and had children with Elizabeth Smith, who was said to be pale “as the mountain laurel that blooms every spring around the creek hollows,” and he was blue.Curiously, four of their seven children followed in Martin’s shoes in developing blue-hued skin. It’s thought this is because Elizabeth carried a recessive version of the rare genetic disorder, so that even though she herself didn’t have blue skin, she – along with Martin – was still able to pass it on to some of their children. Were the Blue Fugates otherwise healthy?Despite their shared condition, most of the Blue Fugates lived well into their 80s and 90s without any severe illness related to their methemoglobinemia. However, in some cases, the condition can be fatal.Research in the 1960s revealed a possible cause for inherited cases of methemoglobinemia as it found cases in Alaska were linked to loss of function in an enzyme called cytochrome b5 reductase that’s responsible for reducing methemoglobin into hemoglobin. This specific enzyme deficiency only seems to cause blue skin but spares the carrier the failure to thrive connected to other cases of methemoglobinemia, which could explain why the Blue Fugates were able to live well into their old age despite the curious blue hue of their skin.

What Is The Longest Bridge In The US?

The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is the longest continuous bridge over water in the world. It stretches for 38 kilometers (24 miles) and is supported by around 9,500 concrete pilings. The southbound portion of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, which had two lanes, was first opened on August 30, 1956, while the northbound bridge was completed in 1969. The bridge was designed to connect the urban area of New Orleans, Louisiana, with the communities on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain. Despite its enormous size, construction of the bridge only took 14 months, with assembly-line and mass-production methods. In fact, this was the first time that such construction methods were applied to a bridge.During the 1940s and 1950s, New Orleans went through a growth spurt, but access to the city was hindered by the lake. To reach the city from the north shore required a lengthy, time-consuming drive. As such, the Greater New Orleans Expressway Commission was established to build the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge. The bridge was a success, benefiting those who lived on either side of the lake. Commute times were dramatically cut, while the bridge also offered access for tourists in New Orleans to visit restaurants and retail stores on the north shore. The southbound bridge consists of 2,246 decks (spans), which are around 8.5 meters (28 feet) wide and 17 meters (56 feet) long, while the northbound bride has 1,506 spans, which are typically 8.5 meters (28 feet) wide and 25.6 meters (84 feet) long. The spans include monolithically-cast (meaning that all components were cast together at the same time) precast prestressed concrete girders, rails, and decksThe spans on both the northbound and southbound bridges are supported by precast pile bents that average 27.4 meters (90 feet) in length. While the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway held the Guinness World Record for the longest bridge over water in the world, its status was challenged in 2011 with the opening of the Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China. However, controversy over this led to the creation of two categories for bridges over water. So now the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is recognized as the longest “continuous” bridge over water, while the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is regarded as the longest “aggregate” bridge.

We Finally Know Why This Nightmarish Mummy Has Been Screaming For 3,500 Years

An ancient Egyptian woman whose face has been locked in a chilling scream-like pose for 3,500 years didn’t end up that way because of sloppy embalming, new research has revealed. Instead, the authors of a new study suspect that the mummy’s tortured expression may reflect the grimace that overcame her face as she died, wailing in anguish.Originally discovered back in 1935, the so-called Mummy of the Screaming Woman was found beneath a tomb intended for a royal architect named Senmut in Deir Elbahari near Luxor. Thought to have been interred in the 15th century BCE, the anonymous corpse is adorned with a black wig and is defined by her wide, gaping mouth, producing a truly horrifying countenance.According to the study authors, mummies with open mouths are extremely rare, since Egyptian embalmers “frequently wrapped the mandible around the skull” in order to keep corpses’ gobs firmly shut. Of the two other known mummies with screaming expressions, one is thought to have been deliberately denied proper postmortem treatment after being executed for plotting to assassinate Ramesses III, while the other has been interpreted as a result of rigor mortis. For this reason, scholars have generally attributed the Screaming Woman’s wide-jawed appearance to sub-standard mummification practices – a theory that is supported by the fact that her brain, heart, liver, and other organs had not been removed. However, after examining the body using an array of imaging and chemical analysis techniques, the authors of the new study find that this simply isn’t the case. For instance, using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), the researchers discovered that the mummy had been embalmed with expensive foreign materials including juniper and frankincense, which would have been imported from far-flung places in the Mediterranean, East Africa, or Southern Arabia. "Here we show that she was embalmed with costly, imported embalming material,” explained study author Dr Sahar Saleem in a statement. “This, and the mummy's well-preserved appearance, contradicts the traditional belief that a failure to remove her inner organs implied poor mummification,” Saleem adds.We don't know who she is, but she definitely wasn't royalty.Image credit: Sahar SaleemFurther analysis of the body revealed that the woman stood 1.54 meters tall (about 5 feet) and died at the age of 48. Her identity remains a mystery, although the fact that she was buried with her hands on her groin indicates that she was not of royal blood.Further examination indicated that the Screaming Woman suffered from mild arthritis of the spine and had lost several teeth at some point prior to her death, possibly at the hands of an ancient dental practitioner. “Teeth lost during life may have been extracted,” said Saleem. “Dentistry had originated in ancient Egypt, with Hesy Re the first recorded physician and dentist in the world.”In an attempt to restore a more youthful appearance, the woman’s hair was dyed with henna and juniper, while her wig – which was made of date palm fibers – had been treated with quartz, magnetite, and albite crystals, giving it a black sheen. As for her nightmarish expression, the researchers hypothesize that the woman’s mouth may have been locked open when she died thanks to a “cadaveric spasm”, which typically occurs when a person experiences a traumatic or violent death. In such cases, the muscles of the jaw seize up, freezing the departing individual’s mortal scream upon their face. “The mummy's screaming facial expression in this study could be read as a cadaveric spasm, implying that the woman died screaming from agony or pain,” says Saleem. However, because no cause of death was identified, the researchers conclude that “the true history or circumstances of the death of the woman […] are unknown, hence the cause of her screaming facial appearance cannot be established with certainty.”The study is published in the journal Frontiers in Medicine.

What Are Those Dark Circles On Swimmers' Backs At The Olympics?

What Are Those Dark Circles On Swimmers' Backs At The Olympics?

If, like us, you've been glued to the Olympics coverage, then you can’t have helped but notice a series of dark bruised circles on the backs of some of the medal hopefuls as they line up for the pool – but what are they? And do they offer any extra competitive or health benefit? We explore the culprit, in the form of a practice known as cupping. What is cupping?Cupping is an ancient therapy involving small vessels or “cups” that are placed on the skin to draw fluid into the area. In some versions of the practice, animal horns can even be used to achieve this. A vacuum is used to pull the skin upwards into the cups. This causes the capillaries in the skin to break, leading to the bruise-like effect that we see on the swimmers. The vacuum can be created using a flame, or in more modern practice, the use of suction. The cups stay in place for between 5 and 15 minutes; this is thought to draw more blood into the area, aiding in healing and even the breaking up of scar tissue, though this is scientifically unproven.                  IFLScience is not responsible for content shared from external sites. There are two forms of cupping, known as dry cupping and wet cupping. In wet cupping, minor incisions or skin abrasions can be used to draw blood or fluid from the body. Dry cupping does not involve any blood, but may be combined with massage. The history of cuppingThe practice has roots in Egypt and Macedonia as well as China and India, though the exact origin is debated. Known as Hacamat in some cultures, mention of the practice is included in the Ebers Papyrus, one of the oldest known medical recordings that dates back to 1550 BCE, explains Daily Sabah. What is cupping used for and does it work? There seems to be a myriad of things that cupping is used to treat, including pain, arthritis, headaches and migraine, high blood pressure, and gynecological disorders. However, there is not yet enough high-quality scientific literature to determine if cupping is a successful treatment for these conditions. Research does suggest that cupping can be beneficial for muscle and lower back pain; however, the evidence is limited. Most do agree that cupping is relatively safe and the signature circular marks fade after a few weeks. The content of this article is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. How Kamala Harris' dim-witted AI policies have harmed Americans

How Kamala Harris' dim-witted AI policies have harmed Americans

Kamala Harris probably knows little — or nothing — about AI policy. “AI is kind of a fancy thing. First of all, it's two letters. It means 'artificial intelligence,’” Vice President Kamala Harris explained to labor and civil rights leaders last year. But if Harris pulls off a victory in November, she would hold a massive influence over America’s AI regulatory approach. As Biden’s AI czar, Harris has advocated for woke and globalist AI regulations that promote left-wing social causes, curb free speech and stifle innovation, and limit competition — a stark contrast to Trump’s and the RNC’s laissez-faire, conservative, pro-tech AI platform. Though she didn't have much experience on AI policy, Biden still decided that Harris would be the right pick to lead the country’s AI policy — an issue that could give the American economy an edge over China’s. Last year, Harris held an AI roundtable where she promised civil rights leaders to implement AI policies that address the “legitimate concern…about how racial bias and other types of biases will impact the lives of people because of AI” by “establishing protections knowing that certain people will be targeted based on their socioeconomic status, based on their race, based upon their disability status.” And this year, Harris announced the creation of a Council of Chief AI Officers, in which left-wing bureaucrats would be appointed in every federal agency to “address the climate crisis” and “advance equitable outcomes.” Even though these AI officers will also be tasked with protecting Americans’ privacy and security, the Biden administration has made it clear that “protecting Americans” includes protecting minority groups from “oppression.” So don’t be surprised when this council converts into another government propaganda arm to implement progressive cultural ideology. Curbing free speech ARTIFICIAL EXPLANATION? Kamala Harris struggles to explain what AI is www.youtube.com Not only is Harris concerned with AI’s racial biases, but she is also concerned with AI’s ability to spread information quickly — “threats which to many people feel existential,” she told a London audience before the Global Summit of AI Safety. "Consider, for example … when people around the world cannot discern fact from fiction because of a flood of AI-enabled misinformation and disinformation.” It’s obvious that Harris and other globalist progressives don’t actually care about misinformation. The World Economic Forum calls for AI regulation since “manipulated and falsified information is now the most severe short-term risk the world faces,” echoing Harris’ anti-free-speech language. Meanwhile, leftists spread misinformation about Trump and allied groups all the time. Their worry is that AI could expand the influence of conservative and right-wing movements in ways they can’t control. Their pre-emptive solution is AI regulations to limit free speech for conservatives and any other group they deem a rival or problem. Without such tools, as the WEF warns, free speech online “could trigger civil unrest and confrontation. It will also lead to growing distrust of media and government sources.” Misinformation and disinformation, they insist, will “deepen polarized views in societies where political opinion is already entrenched.” Of course, the globalist elites consider themselves the only proper arbiter of what counts as misinformation. In their minds, they hold a monopoly on truth and Americans are incapable of independently discerning right from wrong. Voting for a Republican can only mean they were deceived by “misinformation.” Combatting misinformation is just code for censoring speech. Many Chinese AI chatbots don’t answer questions about Tiananmen Square. Now American search engines refuse to autocomplete queries about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. What’s to say that a Kamala Harris-regulated chatbot won’t answer questions about Fauci’s COVID lies or will block all information concerning the assassination attempt? Expanding monopolies Bloomberg/Getty Images Regulations are typically associated with antitrust and breaking up monopolies in order to ensure a fair market. And some in the Biden/Harris administration have aggressively pushed to regulate AI in hopes of creating a competitive market. Lina Khan, chair of the Federal Trade Commission, wrote a pro-AI-regulation New York Times op-ed in which she argues that “public officials have a responsibility to ensure this hard-learned history doesn’t repeat itself,” alluding to big tech’s giant monopolies that have dominated the tech sector. “As companies race to deploy and monetize A.I., the Federal Trade Commission is taking a close look at how we can best achieve our dual mandate to promote fair competition and to protect Americans from unfair or deceptive practices,” Khan wrote. She continued, urging regulators to be “vigilant,” warning that without regulating AI, “dominant firms could use their control over these key inputs to exclude or discriminate against downstream rivals, picking winners and losers in ways that further entrench their dominance.” Harris’ regulatory approach, however, while heavy in regulations, will only expand the monopolies Khan wants to break up. As AI czar, Harris worked with big tech elites, including the CEOs of Google and Microsoft, to regulate AI and crush competition. Last summer, Harris convened with Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI to discuss the “safe, secure, and transparent development of AI technology.” President Biden also met with industry leaders to discuss AI regulation, an effort widely criticized as cronyism. Federalist editor Emily Jashinsky likened the meeting to assembling “a bunch of Railway Barons and saying, ‘I'm really curious. I want you to tell us what we need to do to protect the people from this.’” If Harris were serious about protecting Americans from big tech and AI abuses, why would she meet with the very people she claims need to be regulated and ask them which regulations they want or don’t want? Obviously, big tech wants regulations that will limit competition and increase its market power while scaremongering about how other regulations or the lack of its preferred regulations will stifle innovation. Big tech companies, like Google, want regulations to make it harder for startups to enter the market but oppose regulations that cap their own market share. Under an administration led by Kamala Harris, we’d only see more unnecessary red tape for AI development. For Harris, AI policy is just another weapon to achieve progressive ends. In her eyes, equitable outcomes, not increased innovation and productivity, are the primary benchmark of a successful AI policy. And for establishment liberals, whom Harris now leads, doing the bidding of big tech is just an added bonus that will help garner popularity among the elites.
