The Hoppiest Ending of All: Retelling “The Frog Prince”

Book Recommendations Fairy Tales The Hoppiest Ending of All: Retelling “The Frog Prince” Five froggy tales filled with transformations‚ occasional romance‚ and royals behaving badly… By Rachel Ayers | Published on April 17‚ 2024 Credit: The Jack Zipes Historic Fairy Tale Postcard Collection/Minneapolis College of Art and Design Comment 0 Share New Share Credit: The Jack Zipes Historic Fairy Tale Postcard Collection/Minneapolis College of Art and Design “The Frog Prince” is a strange tale‚ bizarre and silly‚ not quite nonsense but definitely an odder entry in the animal bridegroom category. (Think the Green Serpent‚ the Black Bull of Norroway‚ Hans My Hedgehog‚ and yes‚ the Frog Prince—there’s a veritable bestiary of bridegrooms&;#33;) There’s always a reluctant bride/princess who‚ for one reason or another (often driven by her family’s insistence)‚ comes around to returning the affections of her inhuman mate‚ who then turns out to be human after all—and usually royalty to boot. In case you don’t know the story of our princely amphibian‚ here’s a quick and pond-scummy recap: A lonely princess has a lovely golden ball. Is it real gold&;#63; Unclear‚ but it will sink in water‚ which will be relevant in a moment. She takes it to a glade or well or somewhere away from attendants‚ and plays with it for a while‚ until she drops it in the well or pond or whatever handy body of water is nearby. This causes her a great deal of distress‚ because she can’t retrieve the precious ball‚ and a frog notices her distress. The frog offers to retrieve the golden ball‚ which opens up a myriad of questions. What kind of frog is it&;#63; How big is the ball&;#63; How heavy is the ball&;#63; How is the frog talking&;#63; You know‚ little things like that… But the frog will only agree to retrieve the princess’ ball IF she takes him home to eat from her plate and to sleep in her bed like a beloved pet. The princess agrees to this breezily and the frog retrieves her ball. The princess takes her golden ball and takes off at a dead run‚ completely failing to uphold her end of the bargain and figuring the frog will forget all about it after a while. How wrong she is&;#33; The frog shows up in the middle of dinner‚ and announces to everyone that she’s supposed to let him eat from her plate and sleep in her bed. The king asks his daughter if this is true‚ and while she might renege on her promises‚ she’s no liar‚ so she admits to the bargain. The king insists that she keep her word‚ so now she’s feeding a frog morsels from her own dinner. The king also insists on the bedroom arrangement‚ so that night she goes to bed with a frog. Sometimes in (gentler&;#63;) versions of the story‚ the frog persuades the princess that he’s really a prince and she kisses him‚ breaking the spell. That’s fine‚ I suppose‚ but I prefer the versions where she gets fed up with the frog and throws him into the wall (not to endorse animal cruelty)‚ but it does the trick and breaks the spell. The unfrogged prince marries the princess and they all live happily ever after. At its best‚ “The Frog Prince” examines the promises we make and the reasons to keep them (or not). Girl makes promise‚ girl breaks promise‚ girl ends up keeping promise eventually‚ girl is rewarded with a prince. Pretty straightforward… or is it&;#63; Here are five versions that have tackled different aspects of this odd little tale… “The Distressing Damsel” by David Langford‚ from The Mammoth Book of Comic Fantasy edited by Mike Ashley Princess Fiona overhears her father’s plans to marry her off to whomever will bring the best fortune to his tiny and ill-fated kingdom‚ and while she’s pondering her wish to run away and become a beautiful and mysterious sorceress‚ she stumbles across a warty toad who begs her for the chance to restore himself to his former shape. After some trepidation‚ she agrees and smooches him‚ only to find that while he’s turned into a handsome frog‚ all of his toady warts have been transferred to her own soft skin. While this does buy her some time as her father sets her suitors to the new task of breaking this curse‚ she realizes that even if one of them succeeds‚ she won’t be the winner. With a little amphibian assistance‚ she does manage to find an unusual loophole for her circumstances‚ cutting her father’s plans short and finding a way to put her own dreams firmly at the center of her life. The Frog Princess by E. D. Baker When Princess Emerelda tries to kiss a frog to turn him back into a prince‚ the spell backfires and turns Emma into a frog herself‚ setting off a series of adventures as she and her froggy would-be suitor try to figure out how to return each other to human form. It does get her out of the awkward prospective engagement her mother was encouraging‚ but of course not in the way she had hoped. With a well-reasoned magical system and a fun fantasy world for kids or adults to dive into‚ this middle-grade retelling is short‚ light‚ and charming‚ and has‚ ahem‚ spawned a series of follow-up fairy tale books. “The Frog Princess” from Feminist Fairy Tales by Barbara G. Walker A lovely lady frog falls for a handsome prince who stops by her pond to fish and escape the attention of his courtiers and attendants. Although she realizes that it’s unlikely that he’ll return her affection‚ she journeys to see a fairy who offers her the opportunity to become a human maiden if she can get the prince to kiss her. The frog manages to arrange it during one of the prince’s pondside naps‚ and when he wakes he finds a maiden dressed all in green. As they chat‚ he discovers that she has a deep knowledge of the natural world he finds so much comfort in‚ and he brings her back to the palace where‚ despite her best efforts and their love for each other‚ she does not fit in. After a misshapen child dies shortly after birth‚ the court is in an uproar‚ and she asks him to take her back to the pond where they first met to spend one last day together. Evoking stories of Selkie or other animal brides‚ Walker allows that we can’t always change our nature‚ even for those we love. “The Frog’s Princess” by Daniel M. Lavery‚ from The Merry Spinster Lavery explores gender fluidity (reflected in the characters’ pronouns) and twists our expectations in this retelling‚ examining power dynamics‚ coercion‚ and the “unluckiness” of beauty along the way. The youngest daughter of a small family (the unluckiest of all) loses his golden bauble down a well‚ and haplessly agrees to a frog’s demand to be taken as companion if the frog rescues the golden ball. Overjoyed to have his toy back‚ the daughter runs home‚ ignoring the frog’s pleas to be taken along. Of course‚ a day later the frog reappears‚ and the father insists that his daughter keep his promises‚ lightly made though they were. Flinging the frog against the wall does nothing except make a slightly softer frog‚ and the beautiful daughter is stuck with his companion for we know not how long. More shivery than transformative‚ Lavery nevertheless manages to turn the tale sideways and find new facets of meaning. The Unhandsome Prince by John Moore Caroline was promised she’d get to wed a HANDSOME prince if she turned him from a frog back into a human‚ but Prince Hal is kinda… ehh‚ kinda cute&;#63; In the right light&;#63; It’s not good enough for Caroline‚ who spent weeks quartering off sections of the swamp to make sure she kissed every single frog. She demands compensation from the town council‚ but the witch who made the promise is dead‚ and only her daughter remains—and Emily doesn’t want to give up her estate for a mistake her mother made. So the maiden‚ the unhandsome prince‚ and the young witch set off to twist their fortunes into something better for all of them‚ in this not-exactly-retelling of “The Frog Prince” that borrows from a few other fairy tales along the way (and you know I love a good Rumpelstiltskin cameo&;#33;). This story keeps away from the simple misunderstandings and cattiness between female characters that so often plague these kind of comedies‚ and offers a pure fun ride through the kingdom of Melinower; the three have to work together to save the day‚ and their solutions are both clever and entertaining. Tongue-in-cheek and self-aware‚ this re-imagining is perfect for when you’re looking for a fairy tale that’s entertaining and satisfying. What are your favorite versions of the tale&;#63; Let me know in the comments&;#33;[end-mark] The post The Hoppiest Ending of All: Retelling “The Frog Prince” appeared first on Reactor.

The aftermath of the Fortnite Myths and Mortals season may result in a Fallout collab

With the Myths and Mortals season in full swing‚ some have started to speculate what’ll come next to Fortnite. Given the nature of divine beings‚ and the recent success of the Fallout show‚ a Reddit user has a pretty solid speculation. The next Fortnite season may have a Fallout theme Reddit user daspaceinvader shared his speculation with the Fortnite subreddit‚ that when the Myths and Mortals season ends‚ the Gods may have enough of being summoned only to be defeated‚ leading to an apocalypse of sorts. The perfect gateway to a Fallout collab. Speculation: The next chapter will be post-apocalyptic themed and will feature a Fallout themed battle pass. byu/daspaceinvader inFortNiteBR I personally believe a Fallout collab is not far off at all‚ whether it becomes the theme for the whole season‚ or merely a portion of it‚ like the Avatar collab. For the Gods to leave the Fortnite world without any sort of impact would seem rather anticlimactic‚ and I don’t really ...

PlayStation trophies and a new overlay come to PC with Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut

PlayStation games have already become quite common on PC with games like Horizon Forbidden West and God of War leading the charge‚ but PlayStation integration on Steam and the Epic Games Store is getting even deeper with the launch of Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut in May. In addition to a ton of new PC-specific features like ultrawide support and image upscaling via DLSS and more‚ the PC version of Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut will debut with an all-new PlayStation overlay that includes your friends list‚ PSN profile‚ and other PSN features. The most surprising addition of the bunch is Trophy support‚ allowing you to earn PSN Trophies on PC for the first time ever. The Trophy set for Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the exact same as the PlayStation 5 version‚ and Trophies earned on either platform will automatically unlock whenever you swap between them. If you complete a milestone on the PC version of Ghost of Tsushima‚ you’ll see the Trophy o...

PSA: You can dash while using Fire Slam in Fortnite to destroy opponents from afar

The Fortnite x Avatar collab has given us some incredible new elemental weapons to destroy our opponents with. One player has taken Firebending to new bounds by combining it with the Underworld Dash. Dash while using Fire Slam to reach distant opponents in Fortnite Reddit user Jabroni5092 shared a clip where they managed to use Underworld Dash whilst using Fire Slam to crash down upon foes on a distant summit. This was a VERY convenient time to discover that you can dash WHILE doing a fire kick byu/Jabroni5092 inFortNiteBR Although the player didn’t manage to defeat them (how awesome would that have been)‚ they did deal an incredible 80 damage and upended them before safely retreating. This kind of feat combines numerous items to reach the unreachable and punish them. Using the Shockwave Grenade and Air Bending‚ the player managed to arc through the air at great height and speed. Upon initiating Fire Slam through Fire Bending‚ the player then used the Underworld ...

Preparing for Surgery: How I Prepped My Home

Author of How to Prep When You’re Broke and Bloom Where You’re Planted online course As many of you know‚ I’m undergoing a major surgery on my ankle this week that requires tendon grafts‚ screws‚ and bone saws. It’s a lot more extensive than I ever expected‚ but I want it to be fixed right so I can eventually get moving again. As an active person‚ the past year’s limitations have been very difficult. Preparing for surgery has been interesting (and a little bit expensive.) I have been prepping my house for the aftermath‚ during which I have weeks of bed rest and more weeks of non-weight bearing. I am keeping the equipment because I think that it could also come in handy post-SHTF. We always expect to be hale and hearty throughout those times‚ but life certainly has a way of happening‚ and there are a few items that may be of assistance then. Below‚ I’ll tell you how I’m preparing for the weeks of immobility. Preparing to eat healthy I have been cooking up a storm and freezing meals that only need to be thawed and popped into the microwave. I’m putting them away in batches of two servings. Chili‚ soup‚ casseroles‚ and meat dishes are all in my freezer. I have a nice variety of frozen veggies to have with them. Preparing for surgery should also include giving you the best possible nutrition for recovery. I prepped a week’s worth of fresh vegetables in my fridge‚ and my daughter will restock that tray for me. I’ve always thought it was super important to focus on nutrition while you’re healing‚ so my focus is on high protein and lots of vegetables. I have a cooler that will go beside my bed for little snacks like veggies or cheese and to keep drinks cold. The cooler fits into the basket of my little knee scooter‚ which I’ll tell you about in a moment. Preparing the bathroom I live in an apartment with a relatively small bathroom. There’s a shower‚ toilet and sink in there‚ obviously. I had been keeping my cat’s litter box in there‚ too‚ but it would make it really difficult to get in and out of the shower with one foot while that was in place. I relocated the litter cabinet to an out-of-the-way spot. I made a few purchases for the bathroom. I have a little stool like this one‚ which fits nicely in my shower. I already had a nice grippy loofah shower mat to add traction. I have a reusable cast cover to keep the surgery site and the splint dry (so much easier than trash bags). I invested in my friend’s suggestion of these rinse-free sponges that she uses when camping. I also got a safety rail thing that attaches to the toilet to help me get up and down while one-footed. Because I rent‚ installing stuff into the walls would of course be a no-go. This provides the support I need for the first little while and can be easily removed when I no longer require the assistance. Preparing the bedroom I will be mostly in my room for the first few weeks so I made some modifications to make life easier. First‚ I moved the furniture around where there’s a straight shot from the side of the bed to the bedroom door. I put some wide-legged‚ jammy bottoms and comfy tee shirts in a basket so I don’t have to go digging through drawers or closets. I repurposed a wheeled cart as a bedside entertainment center. It has puzzle books‚ little hooks to organize cords for devices‚ markers‚ pens‚ sketch pads‚ novels‚ yarn and crochet hooks‚ and an embroidery project. The top shelf holds medications‚ moisturizer‚ and other small essentials‚ and also has room for a drink. Small baskets hang off the cart to hold the television remote and my phone. I have a really great lap desk that I use regularly. I’ve had mine for a couple of years and it’s always useful. Some trays we’ve had for years that remind me of school lunchroom trays will help keep any crumbs or spills corralled. I have lots of pillows‚ including one of those reading pillows with arms. I think it’s important when spending this much time in bed to differentiate some between night and day. Finally‚ on the recommendation of my surgeon‚ I got this leg elevation pillow. It was far cheaper on Amazon than on the medical site on which he showed it to me. Preparing for surgery in the rest of the house I have moved furniture in the rest of my apartment to make nice wide pathways. I pushed the kitchen island against a wall to make the route across the kitchen easier and I turned my desk the other direction to make more space there as well. I have a smaller elevation pillow I can use once I can sit in the living room again. Upon a reader’s recommendation‚ I got a reacher-grabber like this. It will help pick things up off the floor or grab things from high shelves as needed. The big purchase was a knee scooter for getting around more easily. They did dispense crutches‚ but those can be a real bear to get around with. A knee scooter will allow me ease of motion and I can transport things easily in the included basket. I was shocked to find that the place for my knee is rock hard‚ so I added this washable memory foam cover for it. Other preparations I did a deep cleaning of my apartment to get everything spic and span before the big day. Medications for pain relief‚ as well as antibiotics‚ have been picked up from the pharmacy and loaded into the pill organizer. Ice packs are in the freezer‚ the fridge is cleaned out‚ and I’ve done everything possible to get as prepared as I can. My budget is tight‚ so spending money on things like this as I am preparing for surgery was a bit stressful.  Some of these purchases were expensive‚ but I felt like they would really help in the long run. Also‚ they can be put away for later if a family member or I need these items again. This will be my last post for a little while. My daughter will let you know tomorrow or Friday how things went‚ but I’m going to take a few days to get a handle on things before I post articles again. The Saturday Shenanigans post will definitely be going on this weekend‚ but there won’t be a Survival Sunday email. In answer to two questions that have been in my inbox: My PO Box mailing address for cards is: LutherCompany LLC 1740 Dell Range Blvd. Suite H13-49354 Cheyenne‚ WY 82009 This mail will then be forwarded to my home. For those who have asked about helping out‚ check out my most recent product‚ which is still on sale as a “name your price” option. As well‚ I have many books available on Amazon. Your support is greatly appreciated but please‚ if things are tight for you‚ don’t feel obligated at all. What about you&;#63; Have you ever had to prepare for a long-term recovery&;#63; Were there additional things that made life easier for you&;#63; Do you have any recommendations or suggestions&;#63; What would you do if you were preparing for surgery&;#63; Let’s discuss it in the comments section. Physicist Studying SARS-CoV-2 Virus Believes He Has Found Hints We Are Living In A Simulation

A physicist studying mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus claims to have found evidence for a new law of physics termed the &;quot;second law of Infodynamics&;quot;‚ and that it could indicate we are living in a simulated universe. On top of that‚ he suggests the study appears to imply that the theory of evolution is incorrect‚ with mutations not being entirely random. There's a lot to unpack here. The first thing to say is that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence‚ and so far – as Dr Melvin Vopson explains in his work – we do not have that at all. In fact‚ we aren't even close. However‚ the ideas and results presented are intriguing and interesting‚ even if further study or scrutiny proves them incorrect. In his latest study‚ Vopson looked at mutations in the SARS-CoV-2 virus from an information entropy (a term distinct from usual entropy) perspective. &;quot; The physical entropy of a given system is a measure of all its possible physical microstates compatible with the macrostate‚&;quot; Vopson explained in the paper. &;quot; This is a characteristic of the non-information bearing microstates within the system. Assuming the same system‚ and assuming that one is able to create N information states within the same physical system (for example‚ by writing digital bits in it)‚ the effect of creating a number of N information states is to form N additional information microstates superimposed onto the existing physical microstates. These additional microstates are information bearing states‚ and the additional entropy associated with them is called the entropy of information.&;quot; While entropy tends to increase over time‚ information entropy tends to decrease‚ according to Vopson. An illustration of this would be the heat death of the universe‚ where the universe reaches a state of thermal equilibrium. At this point‚ entropy has reached its maximum value‚ but not information entropy. At this heat death (or just before)‚ the range in temperatures and possible states in any area of the universe is very small‚ meaning that fewer events are possible and less information can be superimposed‚ making information entropy lower.     While interesting as a way of describing the universe‚ can it tell us anything new‚ or are we just seeing a secondary but unimportant way of describing entropy&;#63; According to Vopson‚ the idea is a physical law that could govern everything from genetics to the evolution of the universe.&;quot; My study indicates that the second law of infodynamics appears to be a cosmological necessity. It is universally applicable with immense scientific ramifications‚&;quot; Vopson wrote in The Conversation. &;quot; We know the universe is expanding without the loss or gain of heat‚ which requires the total entropy of the universe to be constant. However we also know from thermodynamics that entropy is always rising. I argue this shows that there must be another entropy – information entropy – to balance the increase.&;quot;Vopson looked at the SARS-CoV-2 virus as it has mutated through the COVID-19 pandemic. The virus has been regularly sequenced‚ to keep an eye on how it is changing‚ largely in order to develop new vaccines. Looking at the RNA‚ not DNA‚ he found that the information entropy decreased over time.“The best example of something that undergoes a number of mutations in a short space of time is a virus. The pandemic has given us the ideal test sample as SARS-CoV-2 mutated into so many variants and the data available is unbelievable‚&;quot; Vopson explained in a press release.“The COVID data confirms the second law of infodynamics and the research opens up unlimited possibilities. Imagine looking at a particular genome and judging whether a mutation is beneficial before it happens. This could be game-changing technology which could be used in genetic therapies‚ the pharmaceutical industry‚ evolutionary biology‚ and pandemic research.”  To Vopson‚ this suggests that mutations are not random‚ but governed by a law that states that information entropy must stay the same or decrease over time. This would be an astonishing find if confirmed‚ overturning how we believe evolution works‚ but Vopson points to a similar experiment in 1972 which saw an unexpected reduction in the genome of a virus over 74 generations while in ideal conditions‚ which he suggests is consistent with his second law of infodynamics.“The worldwide consensus is that mutations take place at random and then natural selection dictates whether the mutation is good or bad for an organism”‚ he explained. “But what if there is a hidden process that drives these mutations&;#63; Every time we see something we don’t understand‚ we describe it as ‘random’ or ‘chaotic’ or ‘paranormal’‚ but it’s only our inability to explain it. &;quot;“If we can start looking at genetic mutations from a deterministic point of view‚ we can exploit this new physics law to predict mutations – or the probability of mutations – before they take place.”Vopson believes that the law could also explain why symmetry appears so abundantly in the universe.&;quot;A high symmetry corresponds to a low information entropy state‚ which is exactly what the second law of infodynamics requires‚&;quot; Vopson wrote in his paper. &;quot;Hence‚ this remarkable observation appears to explain why symmetry dominates in the universe: it is due to the second law of information dynamics.&;quot; The bold claims (with their requirement for further evidence) do not stop there. &;quot;Since the second law of infodynamics is a cosmological necessity‚ and appears to apply everywhere in the same way‚ it could be concluded that this indicates that the entire universe appears to be a simulated construct or a giant computer‚&;quot; Vopson adds in The Conversation.&;quot;A super complex universe like ours‚ if it were a simulation‚ would require a built-in data optimisation and compression in order to reduce the computational power and the data storage requirements to run the simulation. This is exactly what we are observing all around us‚ including in digital data‚ biological systems‚ mathematical symmetries and the entire universe.&;quot; This doesn't mean that confirmation of the &;quot;second law of infodynamics&;quot; would prove we are living in a simulation – it's possible that the theory could be correct without that being the case. There are other quantum mechanical effects that appear to prove we are not. So‚ how can we test this all further&;#63; If infodynamics is correct‚ information should have mass‚ allowing it to interact with everything else. There are hints this could be the case‚ such as that irreversible erasure of information appears to dissipate heat‚ according to a study conducted in 2012. For Vopson‚ this indicates that this energy must be stored as mass prior to erasure‚ making information a separate state of matter equivalent to mass and energy.Proving or disproving that information has mass may not be too difficult to do experimentally. One simple experiment would be to measure the mass of a hard drive before and after irreversible information erasure. Unfortunately‚ this is currently beyond our capabilities given the small amount of mass change expected. But according to Vopson‚ if this theory is true‚ elementary particles would likely carry information about themselves. For instance‚ letting an electron (or maybe the universe's only electron) know its properties‚ such as its charge and spin. One proposed experiment is to send particles and antiparticles at each other at high speeds.&;quot; The experiment involves erasing the information contained inside elementary particles by letting them and their antiparticles (all particles have 'anti' versions of themselves which are identical but have opposite charge) annihilate in a flash of energy – emitting 'photons'‚ or light particles‚&;quot; Vopson added. &;quot;I have predicted the exact range of expected frequencies of the resulting photons based on information physics.&;quot; While the idea is out of the mainstream‚ the experiment is relatively cheap at $180‚000 (absolutely nothing to simulation theory proponents such as Elon Musk)‚ and testable with current technology. Sure‚ it might just tell us that the idea is incorrect‚ but it seems like an interesting idea to look into‚ and rule it out‚ or find out whether it has weight (or‚ more precisely‚ mass).
