A Grieving Mother Who Lost Her Son to Fentanyl and an Expert Who Shares How We Prevent More Deaths

A mother who tragically lost her teenage son to fentanyl poisoning is speaking out about the opioid crisis among the nations youth. Federal data shows that among 10- to 19-year-olds‚ fentanyl deaths rose 182% from 2019 to 2021.These days‚ experimenting with drugs is deadly‚said Janet Hehl‚ mother of Alec Pierce Hoffman. The cause of Alecs death was‚ in fact‚ fentanyl poisoning. I know that he took a pill‚ I dont know how he got it or what he thought it was‚ Hehl told The Daily Signal in an April interview. I found him unresponsive in his room in the afternoon after speaking to him that morning and did not suspect anything abnormal.Hoffman was 17 years old when he died in 2022. He was a competitive cross-country runner‚ humorous teenager‚ and student at St. John XXIII College Preparatory in Katy‚ Texas.Hehl says she wishes society would focus on increased education around fentanyl and that the law would reflect greater penalties for drug dealers. We need to make stronger efforts to combat the fentanyl attack‚ she said.According to the latest research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention‚ opioid overdoses took the lives of more than 80‚000 individuals in 2021‚ with synthetic opioids such as fentanyl accounting for 88% of the deaths. And according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration‚ the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18 to 45 is fentanyl overdose.Fentanyl made a cameo appearance in the United States late in the 1970s‚ when it was known as China White. Now‚ however‚ it has become the principal villain responsible for Americas overdoses and fatalities‚ Paul Larkin‚ a senior legal research fellow in the Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation‚ wrote in a legal memorandum. (The Daily Signal is Heritages news and commentary outlet.)China and Mexico are responsible for the influx of fentanyl because they work together to ship‚ produce‚ and smuggle it across the border‚ Larkin explained. Fentanyl and its analogues are the principal threat because they are far more potent than heroin‚ making them easier to smuggle‚ he added. You would not believe how many parents Ive encountered who have lost a child the same way‚ Hehl said. Every support group Ive attended‚ every group Ive joined on social media‚ I always encounter someone else who lost a child to fentanyl poisoning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that among people aged 10 to 19 years‚ the median monthly rates of fentanyl-induced deaths rose 182% from December 2019 to December 2021.The problem is that fentanyl is 10-20 times as potent as heroinor 50-100 times as powerful as morphine‚ Larkin said about the fatal nature of the drug in an email to The Daily Signal. In his publication‚ The Scourge of Illicit Fentanyl‚ Larkin wrote that heroin use had never been a particularly safe pastime‚ but once fentanyl appeared‚ users began dropping like flies.According to the Drug Enforcement Administration‚ it usually takes only two milligrams‚ or 0.002 grams of fentanyl to have fatal results on the consumer.Experimenting with drugs is not a new thing‚ but these days‚ it is much more deadly‚ Hehl said. If you get a pill from an unknown source‚ chances are it has fentanyl in it. And depending on the person and the amount‚ it could very likely end in death. This could likely be because fentanyl is cheaper to produce‚ smuggle‚ and distribute than heroin‚ Larkin said‚ making it more profitable for drug dealers. In March 2023‚ the medicine naloxone‚ commonly known by the brand name Narcan‚ was made available to the public over the counter after its synthetization in 1961. It works to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose such as those with fentanyl by attaching to opioid receptors‚ the proteins inside a cell or on its surface that receive signals and are responsible for producing the pain-relieving properties of opioids. Narcan reverses and blocks the opioids effects on the body. However‚ critics are not sold on Narcan being the solution to the United States fentanyl death rates. It can take multiple doses of Narcan to offset a fentanyl OD [overdose]. Hospitals have that type of supply‚ but EMS [emergency services] personnel might not‚ and very few individuals will‚ Larkin pointed out in an email to The Daily Signal. The legal expert said that when there is a safety net available‚ like when individuals know that they have Narcan available in case they overdose‚ some people will take risks they wouldnt. Economists call that the moral hazard problem. I like to think of it as playing Russian roulette with more than one round in the cylinder. When asked about her thoughts on Naloxone‚ Hehl said‚ Im not against it. I support the idea of supplying it at nurses stations in all schools. It could save a life. But its not the solution.Hehl shared her thoughts as to what might be putting young people on the path toward fentanyl exposure‚ beginning with the modern music industry.Popular music‚ specifically rap music‚ is glorifying drug use‚ and its having an impact on our kids. I randomly chose three songs from Alecs playlist and all of them had drug references. Drug use is depicted as casual and habitual‚ Hehl said. She shared some lyrics from multiple tracks by American rapper and record producer LUCKI: Pop another pink codeine on the bus All this xan [Xanax] in my system I would try to get off it‚ but Im feelin too lazy.Hehl concluded‚ We need to address the opioid epidemic. Find out why people are taking opioids and offer other alternatives. There is something they are looking forescaping‚ feeling relaxed‚ etc. Lets offer and encourage safe alternatives for kids and adults.Therapy‚ therapeutic experiences‚ different types of extracurricular programs in schools and work. Activities that promote physical and mental well-being‚ she said.As more parents grapple with the same reality that Hehl faces‚ Larkin offered‚ We need to educate people about fentanyls danger‚ persuade them not to run the risks it poses‚ and stop the sale of poison to our fellow citizens.Editors note: The author of this article‚ Mary Elise Cosgray‚ was friends with Alec Hoffman. The post A Grieving Mother Who Lost Her Son to Fentanyl and an Expert Who Shares How We Prevent More Deaths appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Trump‚ Speaker Johnson Back Proof of Citizenship to Vote

Standing next to former President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Friday‚ House Speaker Mike Johnson‚ R-La.‚ announced legislation to require proof of citizenship to vote.Non-U.S. citizens are already banned from voting in federal elections now. However‚ the National Voter Registration Actbetter known as the Motor Voter Lawdoesnt allow states to check because the federal forms already contain a check box.Johnson said that polling showed 78% of Americans supported requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to vote. He suggested he would put the bill straight to the full House for a vote‚ bypassing the committee process. When we put this bill on the floor‚ youre going to see a recorded vote by Republicans and Democrats. Youll see that Republicans stand for election integrity‚ Johnson said. Well be able to ask this very important question of the Democrats. They are going to have to go on record. Do you believe that Americans and Americans alone should be the ones who vote in American elections? We are about to find out.Since Biden took office‚ more than 7.2 million illegal immigrants have crossed the southern border.During his opening remarks‚ Trump addressed both issues. We have a border thats open. We have a lot of problems in our country. We have an election problem and thats really what were here to talk about today‚ Trump said. I would like to demand that our border be closed because we have millions of people coming into our country‚ millions and millions of people at levels that nobody is reporting‚ nobody is going to talk about.Johnson said the legislation will require states to remove noncitizens from their existing voter rolls‚ with help by allowing states access to databases from the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration. My book The Myth of Voter Suppression details how several watchdog groups found voter registration rolls filled with ineligible foreign citizens‚ dead people‚ and people who have long moved out of a state despite the National Voter Registration requirement to update voting lists.Johnson referred to the border crisis resulting from dozens of executive actions from President Joe Biden. He says he constantly gets questions about why its happening. Why would they do this? Its chaos. Why the violence? Johnson said‚ before answering his own question. Because they want to turn these people into voters. Right now the administration is encouraging illegals to go to their local welfare office to sign up for benefits. Guess what? When you go to a welfare office‚ they also ask you if you would like to register to vote. Many people‚ we think‚ are going to do that.Weeks after coming into office in 2021‚ Biden signed an executive order directing every federal agency‚ including social service offices‚ to boost voter registration. Earlier this week‚ the House advanced legislation to require a citizenship question on the Census form‚ and to no longer count noncitizens when drawing up congressional maps. As Fentanyl Streams Over Wide-Open Border‚ Students Lead Effort to Combat Campus Overdoses

Ten years ago‚ I had never heard the word fentanyl. Now‚ every sorority and fraternity on my college campus is equipped with Naloxone‚ also known by the brand name Narcan‚ a lifesaving medication used to treat opioid overdoses. The fentanyl crisis is acutely felt on college campuses. Oftentimes‚ college students will take a pill that they thought was Xanax or Ritalin and end up dead.According to federal data‚ the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18 to 45 is fentanyl overdose. In the last three years alone‚ examples include three students at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill dying from fentanyl poisoning‚ and two students at Ohio State University died within a week of each other from fentanyl.Having seen the horrors of fentanyl nationwide‚ and particularly in the state of Arizona (where more than five people a day die due to opioid overdoses‚ according to the Arizona Department of Health Services)‚ students at the University of Arizona are leading the way in increasing access to Narcan‚ fentanyl test strips‚ and other overdose prevention measures. On the University of Arizonas campus‚ the presidents of 13 sororities and 18 fraternities have access to Narcan. As a chapter of over 425 members‚ 96 of which live in our chapter facility‚ it was crucial for us to have those options available‚ Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority President Sasha Sanderson told me in an interview. Having access to Narcan and fentanyl test strips in the house gives me peace of mind. The University of Arizonas student-run emergency medical services team has increased access to Narcan on campus by providing a Narcan locator on the university website. The locator shows a map of the surrounding community and pins Narcan distribution sites. The website also provides information about Narcan training and distribution on campus. The medical services team has collaborated with Greek-life organizations and is now turning its sights toward dormitory buildings to ensure more students have access to the lifesaving effects of Narcan. As with any safety issue‚ knowledge is important. We try and maximize the awareness of the dangers of opioids. The state of Arizona has a law which permits EMS/police agencies to leave behind prepackaged intranasal naloxone‚ said the teams public information officer‚ Tamra Ingersoll. We have worked with Greek Life‚ and as our partnership continues to evolve with Counter Narcotics Alliance (CNA)‚ we will be working with Resident Life [on-campus housing] to ensure that Naloxone is available among the first aid items in student living areas‚ she said.Fentanyl is one of the most common drugs involved in overdose deaths because of its highly potent nature.Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine‚ according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Because the nature of a drug deal is illegal‚ drug dealers dont have to provide ingredient lists‚ meaning that they can lace drugs with fentanyl unbeknownst to the user.Dealers are incentivized to use fentanyl as a filler because it is faster and cheaper to produce than other drugs. It is nearly impossible to tell if a drug has been laced with fentanyl before use. And drug dealers will taint anything from counterfeit prescription medicines that they sell online to stronger substances like cocaine. It only takes 2 milligrams of fentanyl‚ which is the equivalent of about 10-15 grains of salt‚ to kill someone. Its crucial to understand that fentanyl deaths arent just affecting long-term drug users. They also affect college students who take a pill that they thought was safe and end up dead. College kids have always made mistakes‚ but nowadays‚ a mistake could cost them their lives. While student-led efforts to prevent fentanyl overdoses are noble‚ experts suggest we would be better off stopping the flow of fentanyl into the country to begin with. That starts with sealing the border.Fentanyl is infiltrating our borders and killing our citizens. We must take both national and international action‚ wrote Heritage Foundation legal expert Hans von Spakovsky.Fentanyl is smuggled into the country through legal and illegal ports of entry‚ highlighting a serious security issue for the U.S.In 2023‚ over 27‚000 pounds of fentanyl were seized at legal ports of entry along the southern border. However‚ the majority of fentanyl is smuggled between ports of entrymeaning there is no way to know how much fentanyl is in the U.S.In the same way the Biden administration could stop the flow of illegal migrants across the border‚ it could also stop much of the flow of fentanyl into the country.Defending our border and stopping the flow of fentanyl is critical if we want to protect American college students.I hope that in the next 10 years‚ we can return to a time when fentanyl wasnt in my regular vocabulary. The post As Fentanyl Streams Over Wide-Open Border‚ Students Lead Effort to Combat Campus Overdoses appeared first on The Daily Signal.
