Music teacher got two standing ovations and a BGT Golden Buzzer with 'Natural Woman' cover

For nearly two decades, people have been enjoying "Got Talent" competitions all over the world, inspired by the first "America's Got Talent" in 2006. And thanks to social media and YouTube, we can enjoy the most memorable auditions over and over again. For instance, this one from Taryn Charles on the 2024 season of "Britain's Got Talent."Charles is a music teacher who works with special needs kids. She even brought one of her students and her parent to be part of the audience during her audition. When the judges asked why she wanted to be on "Britain's Got Talent," Charles said, "I love to make people smile and I think my voice is alright." Talk about an understatement. As she stands waiting for the music to start, she shakes her hand by her side a few times, clearly getting some nerves out. But as soon as she starts to sing the first line, "Looking out on the morning rain, I used to feel so uninspired…" it's clear from her rich, raspy voice and easy stage presence that she's got something special. And it only gets better from there. "(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman" was written by singer-songwriter Carole King, then famously covered by Aretha Franklin, which is a hard act to follow. But Charles knocked it out of the park, blowing away the audience and judges alike. In fact, the performance earned her not one but two standing ovations and inspired judge Bruno Tonioli to smash the Golden Buzzer button before the judges even began to offer their feedback. Watch:What makes this performance especially memorable is how humble and unassuming Charles is before and after her knock-out performance. If you didn't watch til the very end, you may have missed her hilariously real, "I think I've wet myself," which only makes her even more endearing. "WOW I was blown away with her angelic and powerful voice," wrote one commenter. "And yet she is so humble and has a beautiful soul. Plus, I have never in my life seen a double standing ovation, she so deserves a golden buzzer, wishing her the best success." "This is how you do an audition, stunning tone to her voice.....if anyone deserves a chance it's this lady......BOOM!!" wrote another."This was so inspirational. Taryn I am in tears," shared another. "I know what it feels like to struggle with self-worth. You are a mirror to show me that that those people are not always right. You are phenomenally gifted and you have an amazing career as a professional singer ahead of you! Blessings!"Talent competition judges often warn contestants about the challenge of singing songs done by big vocal divas, and we've seen singers attempt to sing the likes of Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey and fall flat. It's not easy to sing an iconic song most people associate with Aretha Franklin—the Queen of Soul and Rolling Stone's #1 singer of all time—and have any hope of impressing people. And yet, Taryn Charles managed to make the song her own and wow everyone in the process with her unique voice. We'll definitely be keeping an eye on this humble music teacher as she makes her way through the "Britain's Got Talent" gauntlet. Heck of a way to kick it off. This article originally appeared last year.

Australian Shepherd uses talk buttons as a creative way to warn family of laundry disaster

Speech-language pathologist Christina Hunger and her dog Stella were the first to experiment with talking buttons in 2019. Since then there has been a surge of online content showing other pet parents using similar kits to communicate with their own pups. The most fascinating aspect of this phenomenon is the question of whether or not canines are able to understand full-blown complicated sentences beyond “treat” and “outside.” While the overall jury is still out on that, scientifically speaking, dogs like Ripley seem to make an incredibly compelling case for believing the hype. The Australian Shepherd has an entire TikTok account documenting his impressive talk button journey, but a video posted on March 28, 2024, feels next-level.In the clip, Ripley presses the “smell” button as his parents eat lunch. When that doesn’t get their attention, he begins to bark. “What do you smell?” a voice finally asks. To which Ripley replies “outside,” followed by “gardens.”Confused, someone asks, “It smells like the gardens outside?” Ripley’s parents had apparently just started a load of laundry before making lunch, and the detergent had been spilling all over the floor from the washing machine. Ripley had been smelling the detergent, which was reminiscent of the gardens outside.Unfortunately, they didn’t put two and two together until after they went back to the laundry room. Hence the moral of the story: “You should always listen to your dog.” @letsgoripley He’s so freakin’ smart! #Talkingdog #letsgoripley #ripleytalks #fluentpet #australianshepherd #dogs ♬ original sound - Ripley the Australian Shepherd Ripley’s amazing feat prompted lots of praise from viewers.“All of the treats,” one person wrote. Another added, “I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, he is brilliant.” Others were quick to compliment the breed. And rightfully so, as Australian Shepherds are known for their remarkable intelligence, as well as their strong drive and exuberance, according to the American Kennel Club. They thrive when they have a job, and the way Ripley jumped into action is a pretty great example of this characteristic. So, while we might not have definite evidence for the efficiency of talk buttons, one thing remains abundantly clear—our dogs are trying to communicate with us in whatever way they can. All we need to do is listen.Check out even more of Ripley's talk button shenanigans on TikTok. This article originally appeared last year.

How Japanese introductions literally translate to English is a wild linguistics lesson

How Japanese introductions literally translate to English is a wild linguistics lesson

Studying a language other than your own native tongue is always a trip. Wrapping your head around completely different grammar and syntax rules, trying to create sounds your mouth isn't used to, sometimes learning entirely new alphabets (or characters when there is no alphabet)—all just to be able to communicate with more of your fellow human beings. (Seriously, when are we going to decide on an actual universal language?) Linguistics is wild, as evidenced by Japanese teacher Hikari's video demonstrating what Japanese introductions would sound like if they were translated literally into English. One of the first greetings you learn in Japanese is "hajimemashite," which is generally interpreted as "Nice to meet you," or "How do you do"—something you say when you meet someone. But the literal meaning of the phrase is "at the beginning" or "first time," which of course sounds odd in English. (Similarly to if you were to literally translate "How's it going?" from English to another language, the understood meaning of "How are you feeling right now?" wouldn't come through, since the words "it' and "going" have nothing to do with how you're feeling.)Then there are name introductions, which seem like they should just be straight up names, but aren't because of what they mean. "I'm Under the Forest." "I'm Inside the Field." Huh? And wait til you see how they share their ages. Watch: If Americans spoke like Japanese #japanese #japanesebelike #japaneselanguage #japaneseculture www.youtube.com To make things a little clearer, the name "Under the Forest" is almost certainly Morishita, a common last name in Japan. (Japanese people generally introduce themselves by last name.) The translation "under the forest" comes from Chinese characters used in Japanese, Kanji, that most Japanese last names are written in. Morishita is 森下 in Kanji, with 森 (mori) meaning "forest" and 下 (shita) meaning "below" or "under." "Inside the Field" would be the name Tanaka, with a similar explanation, but with different characters. As far as ages go, that's a whole other cultural quirk. In Japan, time is separated into imperial eras based on whoever the emperor is, and each era has a name. "Shining harmony 63" means she was born in 1998, or the 63rd year of the Shōwa ("shining harmony") era. Moons are months, and days are, well, days. Japan is the only country where Japanese is an official language, but thanks to the tech boom there in the 80s and 90s and the rise of the popularity of anime worldwide, the Japanese language has seen continually growing interest outside the archipelago nation. According to University of Pittsburgh, there are around 125 million Japanese speakers worldwide, with some concentrated pockets outside of Japan in Hawaii and Brazil. (Side note: Having studied Japanese myself, I can attest that it's a very fun language to learn. The alphabets and Kanji are the hardest parts—the phonetics are consistent and the grammar is quite logical, with far fewer exceptions to the rules than English.) In addition to videos like this one, Hikari offers Japanese lessons on her YouTube channel. You can follow her here. This article originally appeared last year.

William Shatner describes the profound grief he felt when he finally went to space for real

Statistically speaking, the number of humans who have traveled into space is insignificant. But the experience of leaving our home planet and venturing into the great beyond is incredibly significant for the individuals who have actually done it.One of those fortunate humans is actor William Shatner, who spent three years pretending to hurtle through space in his iconic role as Captain James T. Kirk on the original "Star Trek" series. As captain of the USS Enterprise, Captain Kirk was dedicated to exploring "strange new worlds," seeking out "new life and new civilizations" and boldly going "where no man has gone before." Naturally, Shatner has spent a lot of time pondering what it would be like to actually experience leaving Earth, and when he took the opportunity to join Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin trip to space in October 2021 at age 90, he was able to compare how his expectations met up with reality.Shatner shared an excerpt from his new book with Variety, and it reveals that his initial reaction to being in space was surprisingly dark. "I love the mystery of the universe," Shatner wrote. "I love all the questions that have come to us over thousands of years of exploration and hypotheses. Stars exploding years ago, their light traveling to us years later; black holes absorbing energy; satellites showing us entire galaxies in areas thought to be devoid of matter entirely… all of that has thrilled me for years…"However, as he looked out the window of the spacecraft—a real one, not a screen on a film set—and looked in the direction opposite Earth, "there was no mystery, no majestic awe to behold," he wrote. "All I saw was death. I saw a cold, dark, black emptiness. It was unlike any blackness you can see or feel on Earth. It was deep, enveloping, all-encompassing."As he turned back toward "the light of home," he saw the opposite. "I could see the curvature of Earth, the beige of the desert, the white of the clouds and the blue of the sky. It was life. Nurturing, sustaining, life. Mother Earth. Gaia. And I was leaving her."Then he had a stunning revelation: "Everything I had thought was wrong. Everything I had expected to see was wrong."Again, this is a man who has spent much of his life thinking about space—not as an astronaut or astronomer or astrophysicist, but as a human being stuck on the Earth's surface, struck with wonder about what's out there. He explained what he had been wrong about:"I had thought that going into space would be the ultimate catharsis of that connection I had been looking for between all living things—that being up there would be the next beautiful step to understanding the harmony of the universe. In the film 'Contact,' when Jodie Foster’s character goes to space and looks out into the heavens, she lets out an astonished whisper, 'They should’ve sent a poet.' I had a different experience, because I discovered that the beauty isn’t out there, it’s down here, with all of us. Leaving that behind made my connection to our tiny planet even more profound."It was among the strongest feelings of grief I have ever encountered. The contrast between the vicious coldness of space and the warm nurturing of Earth below filled me with overwhelming sadness. Every day, we are confronted with the knowledge of further destruction of Earth at our hands: the extinction of animal species, of flora and fauna . . . things that took five billion years to evolve, and suddenly we will never see them again because of the interference of mankind. It filled me with dread. My trip to space was supposed to be a celebration; instead, it felt like a funeral."Shatner explained how this "sense of the planet’s fragility takes hold in an ineffable, instinctive manner" for many astronauts when they view Earth from orbit. It's part of the "overview effect"—the profound shift in perspective that comes with seeing our collective home from a distance. With no visible borders between nations or peoples, it becomes clear that our divisions are all manmade, which can change the way we view humanity as a whole. The experience left Shatner with renewed conviction to focus on what we share in common."It reinforced tenfold my own view on the power of our beautiful, mysterious collective human entanglement," he wrote, "and eventually, it returned a feeling of hope to my heart. In this insignificance we share, we have one gift that other species perhaps do not: we are aware—not only of our insignificance, but the grandeur around us that makes us insignificant. That allows us perhaps a chance to rededicate ourselves to our planet, to each other, to life and love all around us. If we seize that chance."Just beautiful. Since most of us will never leave Earth, we can take inspiration from those who have, acknowledge our essential oneness and do everything in our power to protect our beautiful, life-giving home.Shatner shares more of his reflections on life on this planet and beyond in his most recent book, "Boldly Go: Reflections on a Life of Awe and Wonder."This article originally appeared two years ago.

20-year-old nomad who chooses to live in a van shares how she stays safe and thrives on the road

Do you ever fantasize about quitting your job, moving out of your place, and living life on the road? Seems impossible, right? How do you make money? How do you stay safe? How do you survive without all of the creature comforts you're accustomed to? Abigail Martin, a 20-year-old photographer and social media influencer, has taken that giant leap into the unknown by buying a conversion van and taking it on the road. On her TikTok page, she shows people what nomadic life is like and how anyone can join her. It all started when she was in high school and started watching #VanLife videos online. By the time she graduated, she had no interest in going to college or joining the rat race. So she worked four jobs until she saved up $18,000 to purchase a 2017 Ford Transit with 54,000 miles on it. It cost an extra $10,000 to install a bed, a kitchen, and to set up the electrical. "In the morning, I would work at a coffee shop from 6 a.m. to noon, then I would walk across the street to a boutique from noon to 6 p.m," she told The New York Times. "Then I'd go waitress at a restaurant from 6 p.m. until closing. On off-days, I was running my own photography business." Abigail purchased her van during the height of lockdowns and used her TikTok page to engage with people when we were all forced to be apart. Now, her page has over 730,000 followers and her videos have 18.3 million likes. If you've ever dreamed of dropping out and living life on the road, here are a few videos we've selected from Abigail's page to get you started. In 1985, Armstrong was called in by the Reagan Administration about cutting the value of the dollar to spark trade. Armstrong warned if you cut the dollar, you will have a big crash within two years. What happened? Two years later, the stock market crashed more than 22% in one day in the infamous 1987 stock market crash. It is still the record for a one-day crash in percentage terms. Armstrong says, “In the end, they said we think foreign exchange had something to do with the crash. That was the best I could get out of them. They are not going to stand up and say, oh gee, we caused it (the crash) by lowering the dollar by 40%.” Armstrong is going to write President Trump a letter warning him NOT to force the US dollar lower. Source: discern.tv In this study published by the Fed itself, they examined the impact of a 10% increase in oil prices. Source: redstate.com Andrew Jackson effectively shut down the Second Bank of the United States (often referred to as the Second BUS) in 1836. Here’s how it unfolded: 1832: Jackson vetoed the re-charter bill for the Second Bank of the United States, which was due to expire in 1836. This veto was part of his broader campaign against what he perceived as a corrupt and monopolistic institution. 1833: After the veto, Jackson began to “kill” the bank by ordering the removal of federal deposits from the Second Bank to various state banks, known as “pet banks.” This was done through his Treasury Secretary, Roger B. Taney, after two previous secretaries resigned rather than comply with Jackson’s order. 1836: The charter of the Second Bank officially expired without being renewed, effectively ending its operations as a national bank. Although the institution continued to operate as a state-chartered bank in Pennsylvania until the financial panic of 1837, its national functions and influence were significantly diminished. Jackson’s actions against the Second Bank are often cited as one of the most significant events in his presidency, reflecting his distrust of centralized banking and his commitment to what he referred to as “hard money” policies, favoring specie (gold and silver) over paper money. However, these policies contributed to economic instability, culminating in the Panic of 1837, which hit after his presidency had ended. While some of these children were later found, many have not been located, leading to widespread fears that they may be subjected to exploitation and abuse by criminal organizations. The controversy came to light following comments by tech mogul Marc Andreessen on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” where he highlighted that numerous tech entrepreneurs, labeled as “political enemies” or part of “disfavored tech startups,” were debanked over the past four years. Chairman Comer has reached out to Andreessen and five other tech leaders to testify before the committee about their experiences and the broader implications of debanking on business operations. The investigation aims to uncover whether these debanking practices stem from decisions made within financial institutions or are influenced by external political pressures. This inquiry points back to a 2014 Oversight Committee report which criticized the Obama Administration for similar tactics used against companies it viewed unfavorably. The current probe will explore if these past policies have set a precedent for current practices under the Biden Administration. The Committee’s actions underscore concerns about freedom of enterprise and the potential misuse of financial systems for political ends. This investigation could have far-reaching implications for how financial institutions handle political affiliations in their banking policies. This address will mark President Trump’s first formal speech to both chambers during his second term. The new U.S. president typically addresses a Joint Session of Congress shortly after taking office, delivering what is informally known as the “State of the Union Address” or an “Address to a Joint Session of Congress.” However, this is not the official State of the Union, which is usually delivered in subsequent years. It is my distinct honor and great privilege to invite President Donald Trump to address a Joint Session of Congress on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, to share his America First vision for our future. pic.twitter.com/7EMyTtwqN2 — Speaker Mike Johnson (@SpeakerJohnson) January 25, 2025   source: thegatewaypundit.com   First Congress and Constitution: March 4, 1789, was the date set for the first meeting of the U.S. Congress under the new U.S. Constitution, marking the beginning of the constitutional republic. This makes it a symbolically important date for celebrating American governance and constitutional tradition. Original Inauguration Day: Until the ratification of the 20th Amendment in 1933, March 4 was the official day for presidential inaugurations. This tradition links the date with the ceremonial transfer of power in American politics, embodying the continuity and stability of the nation’s government.  :  Inviting Trump to speak on March 4 could symbolize a return to foundational principles or a celebration of the American political system’s origins, appealing to those who advocate for “originalist” interpretations of the Constitution or traditional American values.  Given its association with new presidential terms, March 4 might be chosen to signify a fresh start or a new era under Trump’s leadership, aligning with his campaign promises or policy agendas.  Speaker Johnson’s invitation specifically mentions sharing Trump’s “America First vision for our legislative future,” suggesting an intention to frame Trump’s address in terms of national revival, patriotism, or a return to what supporters might view as core American values. By choosing March 4, Johnson and the Republican leadership might be sending a message about continuity, strength, and a return to what they perceive as a more prosperous or stable past, aligning with Trump’s narrative of Making America Great Again.   This date could serve as a rallying point for Republicans and Trump supporters, evoking historical pride and the notion of a unified legislative agenda moving forward.  Humor me… In looking at all the drops with "EYES" I am seeing Five Eyes and Eyes On.
