Trump’s Antisemitism Order Puts Foreign Students—and US Colleges—on Notice

After 15 months of terrorist-supporting thugs engaging in acts of violence and intimidation against Jews with impunity, America finally has a president who takes combatting antisemitism seriously. On Jan. 29, President Trump signed an executive order making it “the policy of the United States to combat antisemitism vigorously, using all available and appropriate legal tools, to prosecute, remove, or otherwise hold to account the perpetrators of unlawful antisemitic harassment and violence.” The order builds on a prior executive order the president signed in December 2019, during his first term, to ensure American Jews would be fully protected under our civil rights laws, like all other religious and ethnic groups. Though the Biden Administration did not formally revoke Trump’s executive order, they essentially ignored it—as was evident to anyone who saw the outrageous conduct of some students at so many college campuses after the October 7, 2023 Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel. Just this week, anti-Israel radicals at Columbia University vandalized university buildings with red paint and dumped cement in the toilets, and a mob of antisemitic protesters affiliated with Students for Justice in Palestine at Ohio State University disrupted an International Holocaust Remembrance Day event at the campus Chabad House. Many of the leaders of the radical student groups behind these acts are here on student visas. As the new Trump order puts it, “Jewish students have faced an unrelenting barrage of discrimination; denial of access to campus common areas and facilities, including libraries and classrooms; and intimidation, harassment, and physical threats and assault.” The order requires federal agencies to report to the president within 60 days on “all civil and criminal authorities or actions within their jurisdiction … against or involving institutions of higher education alleging civil-rights violations related to or arising from post-October 7, 2023, campus antisemitism.” Further, the order requires the secretaries of state, education, and homeland security to make “recommendations for familiarizing” colleges and universities with reasons foreign students can be denied visas under U.S. law. Trump’s order puts foreign students on notice: they are guests in our country, and that comes with obligations. That includes refraining from acts of vandalism, harassment, and destruction of property. It also includes the obligation to refrain from supporting terrorist organizations. The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) states: “Any alien – who endorses or espouses terrorist activity or persuades others to endorse or espouse terrorist activity or support a terrorist organization … is inadmissible.” If it is apparent that a visa applicant is a supporter of terrorism at the time of interview in an embassy overseas, the adjudicating consular officer would refuse the applicant. But sometimes that ineligibility is discovered when the student has already been admitted to the United States and started their studies.  Trump’s order requires the departments of State, Education, and Homeland Security to ensure that institutions of higher education are informed so that they “may monitor for and report activities by alien students and staff relevant to those grounds” of visa refusal. The order further tasks the agencies with ensuring that “reports about aliens lead, as appropriate and consistent with applicable law, to investigations and, if warranted, actions to remove such aliens.” That’s a reference to another section of the INA, which defines “deportable aliens” to include the same behavior – endorsing or espousing terrorism – that would stop them getting a visa to begin with. That means if Immigration and Customs Enforcement gets evidence of such behavior after a student arrives and is in school, they can arrest the student and begin removal proceedings. President Trump made his intentions clear in a fact sheet distributed along with his executive order: “I will also quickly cancel the student visas of all Hamas sympathizers on college campuses, which have been infested with radicalism like never before.” While official sources have not confirmed visa cancelations yet, one media site reported that a Chinese student who was arrested in California last year for leading “pro-Palestinian” rallies just had her visa revoked. This would make her “out of status” and require her to leave the United States. Supporters of terrorism are inadmissible to this country. If a foreign national on a visa shows support for terrorism after they’ve been let in, they should be deported. Thanks to President Trump’s common-sense approach to national security, the existing but under-used law stating that can now be enforced. Virginia Catholic Bishop Advocates for ‘Well-Regulated Borders’ Amid Vance Controversy

The Catholic bishop of the diocese of Arlington, Virginia came to the defense of secure border policies, amid debate over Vice President JD Vance’s criticism of Catholic assistance to illegal immigrants. The “Pastoral Statement on American Immigration Law” envisions a form of border security which works for the Catholic vision of the common good. In the letter, Bishop Michael F. Burbidge wrote of “the Church’s teaching that every country has the right and the responsibility ‘to promote public order, safety, and security through well-regulated borders and just limits on immigration.” “As the Catechism of the Catholic Church emphasizes, Catholic teaching does not support an open border policy, but rather emphasizes a common sense approach where the duty to care for the stranger is practiced in harmony with the duty to care for the nation.” added Burbridge, whose diocese includes Northern Virginia cities just outside Washington, D.C. He emphasized the need to protect “human dignity” of all, including illegal immigrants. “Even when immigration reform includes repatriation of those persons who have committed violent crimes, or who otherwise violate the terms of a right to remain, human dignity can be respected. We must not presume a conflict between human dignity and the rule of law.” Burbridge wrote that the Catholic Church “has historically emphasized two crucial points,” namely “the rights of persons to the integrity and unity of their families irrespective of where they settle,” and access to the sacraments of the Church. “I plead with those responsible for law enforcement to refrain from entering our sacred spaces unless absolutely and unequivocally necessary to ensure the safety of all persons,” he added. INCREDIBLE statement from @BishopBurbidge of @arlingtonchurch on immigration."Along with our greatest respect for human dignity, and as a consequence of our respect for the common good, the Church has always shown the greatest concern for all that is right and just. We implore… pic.twitter.com/ErXBGLUy1L— Bradley Devlin (@bradleydevlin) January 31, 2025 Burbridge’s letter comes amid controversy in the Catholic Church over PResident Donald Trump’s tough border policies. Cardinal Robert McElroy, who will soon be installed as archbishop of the Washington, D.C. diocese, has harshly criticized deportation efforts. At the press conference announcing his appointment, McElroy said that “having a wider, indiscriminate, massive deportation across the country would be something that would be incompatible with Catholic doctrine.” Timothy P. Broglio, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said in a Jan. 22 statement that “[s]ome provisions contained in the Executive Orders, such as those focused on the treatment of immigrants and refugees, foreign aid, expansion of the death penalty, and the environment, are deeply troubling and will have negative consequences, many of which will harm the most vulnerable among us.” “Other provisions in the Executive Orders can be seen in a more positive light, such as recognizing the truth about each human person as male or female,” added Broglio, who heads the archdiocese for the Military Services, which supports Catholics in the U.S. military. Vance, himself a convert to Catholicism, was asked about Broglio’s statements in a “Face the Nation” interview that aired Jan. 26. “As a practicing Catholic, I was actually heartbroken by that statement,” Vance said. “I think that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops needs to actually look in the mirror a little bit and recognize that when they receive over $100 million to help resettle illegal immigrants, are they worried about humanitarian concerns? Or are they actually worried about their bottom line?” Vance added that if the bishops were “worried about the humanitarian costs of immigration enforcement, let them talk about the children who have been sex trafficked because of the wide-open border of Joe Biden.” Just google “ordo amoris.” Aside from that, the idea that there isn’t a hierarchy of obligations violates basic common sense. Does Rory really think his moral duties to his own children are the same as his duties to a stranger who lives thousands of miles away? Does anyone? https://t.co/otvv5g1wFN— JD Vance (@JDVance) January 30, 2025 The vice president also defended on social media Thursday his remarks on “Face the Nation” that “you love your family and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens in your own country, and then, after that, you can focus and prioritize the rest of the world.” Writing on X, Vance said a critic should Google “Ordo Amoris”—the idea that humans have a heightened moral obligation to those closest to them (in this case, one’s family and nation). “The idea that there isn’t a hierarchy of obligations violates basic common sense,” wrote Vance. 'Green and Gold': Betting the farm on the Green Bay Packers

M. Night Shyamalan isn’t a Packers fan, but he pushed filmmakers Anders and Davin Lindwall to go all in on “Green and Gold.” The “Sixth Sense” director once told the brothers to find stories close to their Midwestern roots. The Lindwalls grew up rooting for the Packers in a tiny town near the Wisconsin-Michigan border. That authenticity can be seen in every frame of their film. "You grew up in such a distinct part of the world. There's stories up there that you’ve got to tell, especially in your early movies," Anders recalls the director saying. The Lindwalls did just that with their debut feature, a heartfelt tale set on a Wisconsin dairy farm where community, not cash, matters. Lifelong fans “Green and Gold” stars Craig T. Nelson of “Coach” fame as Buck, a fourth-generation dairy farmer trying to save his land from being bought out from under him by the local bank. His Hail Mary? He literally bets the farm on the Green Bay Packers winning the Super Bowl. The film debuts today, courtesy of Fathom Entertainment, and has the Green Bay Packers’ seal of approval. The drama won several honors at the Heartland International Film Festival last October, including its Audience Choice Award. The Lindwalls grew up rooting for the Packers in a tiny town near the Wisconsin-Michigan border. That authenticity can be seen in every frame of their film. “This is about as close to home as we can do. I couldn't think of another story that would be closer to what we knew growing up,” says Anders, the film’s director. Staying local “We spent six months on location, scouting and getting to know farmers and finding the exact kinds of dairy cows we were looking for,” producer Davin says. “We made a huge effort to keep everything from there and keep it true and authentic to the area.” That helped shape the story, including a subplot in which Buck’s granddaughter Jenny (Madison Lawlor) finds herself torn between two worlds. Should she stay on the farm and help Buck or pursue her music career? A visiting musician (Brandon Sklenar, “1923”) complicates that decision. Independent filmmakers pinch every penny to get their films made. It’s never easy, no matter the stars attached to the film. For the “Green and Gold” team, that meant considering an offer to boost the existing budget. The brothers gritted their teeth and said, “Thanks, but no thanks.” “We lost sleep over it,” Anders admits of a studio’s offer to double the money available for the film. “They wanted to shoot in a state that was more tax-incentive [friendly].” Taking the cash would have meant abandoning the ties already forged during preproduction in places like Green Bay and Door County, Wisconsin, where much of the film was eventually shot. “We had been up there for months on the ground, getting to know people. And then you just say, ‘Hey, sorry. We're out.’ That's a dirty move, and it just doesn't look good. You want the production itself to mirror the thematic hope for the movie,” Anders says. “It totally negates the work that you're actually trying to portray.” “We still lose sleep over that decision, but I think it was ultimately the right one,” Davin adds. Country strong The film also banked on the rural backgrounds of its key cast members. “[Nelson] lived off grid for seven years. … He knows what it means to have a really simple existence in a way that a lot of people don't,” Anders says. Lawlor, who plays Buck’s headstrong granddaughter, grew up in Rapid City, South Dakota, and left home for the bright lights of Los Angeles around the age of 17. “She knew the rural life,” Anders Lindwall says. “There are intangible things that impact your decisions, impact the way you think and talk. … A lot of her inner journey mirrored Jenny’s.” 'You did good, kid' “Green and Gold” marks the final screen appearance of M. Emmet Walsh. The character actor, known for his work in classics like “Blood Simple,” “Blade Runner,” and “The Jerk,” passed away last year at 88. The Hollywood veteran struggled to remember his lines on set due to his advanced years. He asked the “Green and Gold” team to feed him the lines. “It was so special to be able to witness it,” Anders recalls. “You could just throw him a line, and he would just say it, but he would embody it as an actor. … You couldn't do that with another actor. It was just awesome.” Walsh even gave the Lindwalls a tip of the cap on his final day on set. “He shook my hand, and then he's walking away down the hospital hall [set], and he goes, ‘You did good, kid.’ He didn't even turn around. ‘Hope it gets you your next one.’ “Just like that. It was the last thing he said to me,” the first-time filmmaker remembers.

These smart glasses help people with macular degeneration by eliminating blind spots

Macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of vision loss, affecting millions worldwide, especially those over 60. However, Soliddd Corp may have an answer to the problem: a pair of smart glasses that treat macular degeneration. These glasses promise to restore vision for individuals grappling with this debilitating condition, helping them regain independence and improve their quality of life. The glasses mimic the mechanics of insect eyes, using multiple perspectives to create one sharp image. Tiny cameras on each temple capture images of the environment and send them to displays inside the lenses. These displays house 64 micro-lenses, each projecting a miniature image onto the healthy peripheral part of the retina. So, these smart glasses treat macular degeneration by essentially removing the blind spots that the disease causes. It’s an interesting solution to the problem. While it doesn’t actively “cure” the degeneration, it does help revive the patient’s vision in different ways. The company showcased the glasses at CES 2025, where Soliddd showcased tests involving 31 individuals experiencing macular degeneration. https://youtube.com/shorts/I1JTwT0SxPc?si=5DRTBqPq62LN0RFq 25 participants read faster with the glasses, and seven who couldn’t read previously were able to read again. The company plans to test both eyes simultaneously in future trials. Overall, the results here are very promising, and it does look like these smart glasses could actually treat macular degeneration. However, macular degeneration is a very complex disease that comes in two forms: dry and wet. The "dry" form, which accounts for up to 90 percent of cases, involves the gradual deterioration of light-sensitive cells in the macula—the part of the retina responsible for central vision, color perception, and fine details. This leads to gaps in vision, making everyday activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces difficult. In some cases, dry macular degeneration progresses to the "wet" form, where abnormal blood vessel growth accelerates vision loss. With no real cure available, Soliddd’s smart glasses are about the closest treatment we have for macular degeneration. Since no FDA approval is required, Soliddd aims to launch the production version of its glasses by the end of 2025. Whether they see the spread or actual viability that the tests have shown, though, is still an undetermined factor. But at least people suffering from this terrible disease will have more options now.
