Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson talks about the bad audiences he encountered in the USA and Brazil

During the past years Jethro Tull has been touring a lot all over the world promoting their new studio albums and the co-founder, multi-instrumentalist, singer Ian Anderson is the only original member of the group these days. Although he has a lot of experience in live shows, he said in an interview with Classic Album Review (Transcribed by Blabbermouth) that some things still bother him. He talked about some bad audiences he encoutered in Brazil and in the United States. Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson talks about the bad audiences he encountered in the USA and Brazil "I wanna be free of feeling that I am in any way having to comply with other people's wishes and other people's demands. And the more demanding an audience are, by the way, the less I enjoy it, because there are occasions where sometimes you get a volatile audience due to the cultural tendencies in particular places. I could name Brazil, for example, where audiences think it's okay to whistle and shout and boo and shout out the names of songs they wanna hear. I mean, I actually find it incredibly rude, and I really don't enjoy that. It's not every concert I've played in Brazil, but I encountered it a couple of times last year when I was on tour in Brazil, and that's the way they are." "There are other national stereotypes where people do behave that way. You will encounter it sometimes in the USA, where people think it's okay to shout and whistle. It's not okay. I'm trying to concentrate on playing sometimes quite difficult music, and I don't like to be interfered with. I like to have the flexibility to be able to do that. And so if the audience set out to somehow manipulate you or influence your way of playing, that's not good. For me, it is absolutely sufficient, at the end of a song, to see smiles on faces and somebody applauding at the appropriate time. That means everything to me. I don't wanna be interrupted while I'm performing." He continued: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFOv9HHe19c&pp=ygUQY3VyaW91cyBydW1pbmFudA%3D%3D "I'm not complaining. Things are the way they are. If you're a performing musician, just as they would be if you were the prime minister at prime minister's questions — you have to accept that you're gonna get some bad behavior and some interfering kind of manipulative demands from the backbenchers. It's the way things are. We have to accept it. But sometimes, as in this case, it becomes a topic of a song, slightly tongue in cheek, and certainly not only applicable to me. It could apply to a ballet dancer or an opera singer or a thespian in the midst of a Shakespearean dramatic play. It happens to all of us. We are controlling, and yet in a funny kind of a way we're also being controlled by. And in a kind of sadomasochistic way, perhaps we, or at least some of us, might like that. They might like that feeling of having to work within the expectations of an audience and they want to satisfy that, particularly in more popular, big productions." "They probably get a little cheesed off if the audience isn't jumping around and waving their hands in the air and taking selfies and doing whatever. They probably feel they're being ignored in some way, or it's not a responsive audience. But since 1969, when I first started playing in theaters in the U.K., I take a different tack. I like a respectful, relative silence until we get to the end of a song. Then it's time to applaud. And some people might find that difficult to understand or something they don't particularly like, that I would feel that way, but it's the way I've always been. And the way I am, on the rare occasions I go to a concert, I'm not gonna start whistling and shouting and calling out for songs that I wanna hear. Or booing. What's the point in doing that? You might as well just leave the venue and get to the pub early," Ian Anderson said. Until 2022, the most recent Jethro Tull album was a Christmas themed record released in 2003. 19 years later the band finally made a new studio album, which was “The Zealot Gene” (2022) but then they released “RökFlöte” (2023) and now announced their 24th studio album “Curious Ruminant” which will be out next March 7, 2025. Besides Anderson, were also part of the record: Andrew Giddings (Keyboards), James Duncan (Drums), David Goodier (Bass),  John O’Hara (Keyboards), Scott Hammond (Drums) and Jack Clark (Guitar). The post Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson talks about the bad audiences he encountered in the USA and Brazil appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

Sharon says Black Sabbath final show will also be Ozzy’s last gig

Black Sabbath announced this week their final show, which will also serve as a farewell to Ozzy Osbourne, who has been facing numerous health issues in recent years, including Parkinson's disease. His wife and manager, Sharon Osbourne, confirmed in an interview with Birmingham Live that it will be Ozzy's final gig. Sharon Osbourne said Black Sabbath final show will also be Ozzy Osbourne's last gig "I left that to Ozzy (To decide when the reunion would happen). He's in constant contact with Tony and Geezer. And Bill, too. They talk all the time. Ozzy said 'I'm going to do my goodnight gig, my farewell, and would you come up and do Sabbath with me' He couldn't do it on his own. And they all said yes. When they heard it was for charity, it was easy." "(...) I think it's the best metal gig ever. It's easy when you have such good friends and friends that support you. We've known these guys for years and years and many of them were passed the torch by Sabbath. It goes down the line. When you need them, they come." "For Ozzy, it's goodnight to his fans. The other guys in Sabbath will go on to their various projects but for Ozzy, it's definitely farewell. Our friends want to come, and they know it's for charity, so it's brilliant. It's a win-win for everybody... But especially the fans," Sharon Osbourne said. The show will happen next July 5 at the Villa Park in Birmingham, the city were the band was formed. The concert's revenue will go to Birmingham Children's Hospital, Acorn Children's Hospice, and Cure Parkinson’s. Besides the headliners: Black Sabbath and Ozzy as a solo act, were also announced bands and artists like Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Pantera, Alice in Chains, Slash, Sammy Hagar, KK Downing, Jake E. Lee, Papa V Perpetua (Ghost), Rudy Sarzo, Tom Morello and Wolfgang Van Halen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0s1oz5vck3s&pp=ygUSYmxhY2sgc2FiYmF0aCAyMDI3The post Sharon says Black Sabbath final show will also be Ozzy’s last gig appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

The Beatles member that Gene Simmons said was a genius too

It's no secret that Kiss was heavily inspired by The Beatles. Band members, like Gene Simmons, have even said that their idea was to create a Hard Rock group that was essentially "The Beatles on steroids." Although Kiss had a much heavier sound, there are some notable similarities, such as the rhythm guitarist and bassist being the main songwriters and vocalists, while the lead guitarist and drummer occasionally wrote and sang their own songs as well. They were all big fans of the Fab Four, but for Gene Simmons, the impact was especially profound. As a kid, his life changed when he saw the Liverpool band perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. It was a turning point that showed him the path to follow. But beyond Paul McCartney and John Lennon, the Kiss bassist believes there was another genius in the band as well. The Beatles member that Gene Simmons said was a genius too The youngest member of the Beatles, George Harrison, was the one who Gene Simmons mentioned when talking about his favorite songwriters in an interview with Classic Rock in 2024. After mentioning Lennon and McCartney, he noted that Harrison was also a genius. "It’s either Lennon or McCartney. Because for every Eleanor Rigby, every Yesterday, you had Across The Universe, which is haunting like no other song I’ve ever heard. Even a song that Lennon wasn’t fond of, And Your Bird Can Sing, nobody has ever sounded like that before or after. So many great songs. It’s incredible. And let’s not forget George Harrison. He was supposed to be less talented because he didn’t write All You Need Is Love and all those other hits. But then he came up with While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Something and Here Comes The Sun. So it’s like: “Oh, that guy’s a genius too!” As Gene Simmons said, Lennon and McCartney wouldn't leave much space to present his songs in The Beatles. That was something that George himself complained after the group came to an end. He said that they would have to do dozens of songs by Paul and Lennon before they accepted to work on tracks made by him and Ringo Starr. The Beatles albums that Simmons thinks is overlooked https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJDJs9dumZI&pp=ygUcd2hpbGUgbXkgZ3VpdGFyIGdlbnRseSB3ZWVwcw%3D%3D The band existed only from 1960 until 1970 and released 12 studio albums. But their material was so good that it was enough to change the course of music. In his opinion The Beatles self-titled album from 1968, also known as the "White Album" is an overlooked album by the group. That record has four tracks written by Harrison: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Piggies", "Long, Long, Long" and "Savoy Truffle". "It’s an overlooked record I think. They were in the midst of breaking up. They were writing separately, and here you can really tell the differences between the Lennon–McCartney and George Harrison songs. What I find really interesting about the record is how it’s not really polished. ‘Glass Onion’ is as unique a song as I’ve ever heard, and with self-reference: ‘I told you about Strawberry Fields’, ‘the walrus was Paul’. I mean all that stuff! It refers to things the fans were talking about." "It’s a spectacular album. It doesn’t connect like Abbey Road or Let It Be anywhere near as fast because the songs are all over the place. In the days when album covers and packaging meant so much. It was just a brave statement to say it doesn’t have a title and leave it white. There is no title anywhere on the record, that’s fantastic! Just the solo photos of the band inside. It’s a strange record," Gene Simmons told The Quietus in 2015. Simmons always mentions The Beatles as a band that changed the world. For him, the band opened the mind of kids who would then discover Chuck Berry, Motown and many other musicians and music genres. The post The Beatles member that Gene Simmons said was a genius too appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.
