The adage something is better than nothing most certainly does not apply to speaker of the House with the current crop of Republican congressmen. At this point‚ it would be better for Republicans to vacate the chair‚ even if means a deadlocked conference and the party cannot agree upon a speaker. Paralyzing the House and preventing it from passing more odious legislation is probably the most auspicious outcome we can hope for now.When Republicans took over the House in January 2023‚ they had one job: Stop Joe Bidens destructive policies. If they couldnt pass good legislation‚ at least they had the numbers to stop must-pass bills especially budgets and debt ceiling hikes unless and until certain conditions were met. Given inflation‚ invasion‚ and indoctrination‚ Republicans had a host of issues they could have used to wage and win budget warfare particularly against an unpopular administration.When it comes to the resisting the uniparty‚ nothing is always better than something.Alas‚ we cannot have nice things.Republicans gave Biden a blank check on the debt ceiling for the remainder of his term‚ passed every single appropriation bill to fund his policies without any reforms in exchange‚ and gave away remaining leverage on must-pass reauthorization bills‚ such as the National Defense Authorization Act.The entire purpose of ending the paralysis in the speaker fight in October and agreeing to elevate a weak-kneed backbencher like Mike Johnson (R-La.) was to fight on at least one issue the border in the final budget bill of the year. Now that Johnson has sold out on funding the leviathan (with a majority of his party in opposition)‚ there is no point in avoiding the chaos of a vacant speakers chair indefinitely.In fact‚ it would be beneficial.Having relinquished the GOPs leverage on must-pass bills‚ Johnson is embarking on a plan to pass new bad bills. Its one thing to say House Republicans lack the votes to enact good policy changes‚ but even with a paper-thin majority‚ they can use House rules to block the bad ones. Johnson has other ideas‚ apparently.Johnsons top priority is to pass new funding for Ukraine. Nobody has explained yet how another $60 billion will help Ukraine win an unwinnable war. To the swamp politicians‚ Ukraine funding has now become an unconditional ritual akin to biblical tithing‚ except with our money. Unfortunately‚ President Trump has blessed the idea of a lend-lease program for Ukraine rather than direct aid‚ a lifeline that Johnson has eagerly taken. Except‚ as Trump himself said in February‚ if they cant make it‚ they dont have to pay us back.The silence of right-leaning influencers is as shocking as it is bizarre. Even if one supported Ukraines defense against Russia in 2022‚ nothing is left to be gained by provoking Russia even more by sending Ukraine more weapons or by seizing Russias foreign assets‚ as Johnson proposes. It is a losing cause and would make no strategic sense‚ even if it didnt cost us a dime and we werent facing our own fiscal insolvency.Nevertheless‚ passing some form of Ukraine aid remains the speakers top priority. Johnson has shown hes willing to bypass the Rules Committee and pass major bills with majority Democratic support on the floor under suspension of the rules. Unless he is removed (or pressure is brought to bear on Trump to change his mind)‚ this aid package will pass in some form. In that sense‚ a vacant chair with zero legislative activity on the House floor would be superior to the status quo.Then‚ of course‚ there is the FISA Section 702 reauthorization‚ a surveillance law that has been turned against Americans up to and including Donald Trump. Johnson could have used the reauthorization vote at the end of the year to extract concessions from Biden and the Democrats on GOP priorities.In particular‚ Johnson could have backed the bipartisan reform bill that passed the House Judiciary Committee with support of the ranking Democrat to require federal law enforcement agencies to obtain a warrant when seeking to query information on any American caught up in foreign surveillance.In fact‚ Johnson did back that provision. Then he reversed course. He also promised Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio) a vote on his amendment to bar federal agencies from skirting the Fourth Amendment by purchasing information on Americans from private data companies. After a conversation with House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-Ohio)‚ a staunch supporter of the surveillance program‚ Johnson threw in with Team FBI.The good news is that Johnsons grip may be slipping: 19 Republicans on Wednesday defied the speaker and tanked reauthorization in a procedural vote.Johnson was reportedly outraged. But the real outrage should be coming from the right. Unless Trump exerts the influence of his voters upon Johnson‚ Republicans have no choice but to vacate the chair. A man was arrested after he allegedly stripped naked in the women';s locker room at a Planet Fitness gym in North Carolina and refused to leave even though a child was likely present.Last Thursday‚ Christopher Allan Miller‚ a 38-year-old man sporting a beard‚ reportedly created quite a disturbance at a Planet Fitness in Gastonia‚ North Carolina‚ a city of 80‚000 residents about a half-hour west of Charlotte. A woman inside the women';s locker room there called 911 to report that Miller was allegedly ";walking around‚ showing us his penis‚ and he won';t leave.";She likewise told the dispatcher that the man claimed to be transgender: ";It';s a man‚ but he says he identifies as a woman."; She also reiterated that Miller was ";completely naked‚"; wearing ";literally nothing.";Other reports indicate that Miller also engaged in harassment‚ asking a woman to shower with him and petitioning her to rub him down with lotion. It is not clear whether this woman is the same woman who called 911.In any case‚ Miller was arrested and booked into the Gaston County jail. His sex has been listed as a ";male"; on jail records. Miller has been charged with one count of felony indecent exposure. In North Carolina‚ indecent exposure is usually a misdemeanor offense with one notable exception: when it occurs ";in the presence of any other person less than 16 years of age."; In other words‚ a young girl was likely inside the locker room at the time Miller allegedly exposed himself. He remains in custody on a $25‚000 bond.Betty Brice‚ another Planet Fitness member‚ said she does not want men sharing the women';s restrooms and locker rooms at the gym. ";I think a woman should be able to go into a womans bathroom without a man coming in saying hes transgender‚"; she said.Brice may want to consider switching gyms‚ since Planet Fitness has a policy of allowing members to use the facilities including bathrooms and showers that correspond to their ";self-reported gender identity."; This policy has already cost one Alaskan woman her membership after she reported a man shaving in a women';s restroom at Planet Fitness last month. It may have also cost the global company hundreds of millions in stock value. After the incident in Alaska made headlines‚ Planet Fitness'; stock value dipped $400 million in just a week and 13.59% in a month‚ Blaze News previously reported. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds (R) signed a bill into law on Wednesday that would allow state police to arrest and deport certain illegal immigrants.The law‚ which goes into effect July 1‚ will make it an aggravated misdemeanor to be in Iowa if the individual has an outstanding deportation order or was previously removed from the country or prohibited from entering the country. Individuals charged with the offense could face up to two years in prison.The charges are bumped up to a felony offense if the individuals former deportation order was related to drug crimes‚ crimes against people‚ or if they have any felony convictions. Suspects may not be arrested at places of worship‚ schools‚ medical facilities‚ or facilities for sexual assault survivors‚ the legislation reads. The Senate File 2340 states that a judge may choose to allow the immigrant to leave the country instead of facing charges. Reynolds stated‚ The Biden administration has failed to enforce our nations immigration laws‚ putting the protection and safety of Iowans at risk.Those who come into our country illegally have broken the law‚ yet Biden refuses to deport them. This bill gives Iowa law enforcement the power to do what he is unwilling to do: enforce immigration laws already on the books‚ Reynolds added.State Senator Janice Weiner (D) criticized the bill‚ calling it a political stunt and a false promise that doesnt contain the needed resources‚ the New York Times reported.Its a gotcha bill‚ Weiner claimed.Mark Stringer‚ the executive director of the Iowa American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa‚ also spoke out against the legislation‚ stating‚ The Iowa law enforcement and state judges tasked with authority to carry out this outrageous legislation are not trained in immigration law and have no proper authority to enforce it.Stringer claims the new law would encourage racial profiling and stereotyping while undermining public safety and the rule of law.It will consume already strapped state court and law enforcement resources‚ he contended.Stringer argued it is one of the most extreme‚ discriminatory‚ and unconstitutional anti-immigrant bills in the country.State Representative Steven Holt (R)‚ who supported the measure‚ called on states to act.Many other states are standing up to protect their sovereignty‚ and their citizens and Iowa must do the same‚ Holt stated.The legislation is similar to Texas Senate Bill 4‚ which is currently tied up in the court system following a lawsuit from the Biden administrations Department of Justice.Like Blaze News?
