AI Overviews will show even more health info in Google Search

The snippets of AI-generated information appearing at the top of Google Search results are the norm now, for better or worse. Known as AI Overviews and infamous for suggesting putting glue on pizza and making other errors in its early days, the feature has not been removed. Instead, Google doubled down on AI Overviews, bringing it to more markets. Then again, the AI Overviews no longer suggest putting glue on pizza, so that's a win. Google is ready to upgrade the AI Overviews further, saying that Google Search users seem to like the feature. "Since AI Overviews launched last year, people are more satisfied with their search results, and they’re asking longer, more complex questions," Google said in a blog post covering Google's newest health-related initiatives. One of those initiatives is having AI Overviews show more health information than before. Continue reading... How light and epigenetics cooperate to regulate plant growth

A research team led by Prof. Cao Xiaofeng at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGDB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has uncovered the cooperative roles of photoreceptors, epigenetic modifiers, and transcription factors in regulating light-responsive genes in plants.

Light reveals unique quantum spin liquid state, promising error-free computing

A team of researchers affiliated with UNIST has succeeded in identifying traces of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) using light. The Kitaev QSL represents a special quantum state that could pave the way for the development of error-free, large-scale quantum computers. However, experimentally confirmed instances of this phenomenon within materials have been scarce, prompting ongoing efforts to discover suitable candidate materials.

One-step creation of Cre-loxP organisms: Precise control and modification of gene expression

Researchers at the University of Tsukuba have developed a vector that integrates the Cre enzyme gene with the specific DNA sequence loxP, which is its target. This vector allows the creation of Cre-loxP organisms in a single step and thus significantly reduces the time and cost of production.

Machine learning encoder improves weather forecasting and tsunami prediction

Successful test results of a new machine learning (ML) technique developed at Georgia Tech could help communities prepare for extreme weather and coastal flooding. The approach could also be applied to other models that predict how natural systems impact society.

Astronomers discover 'space tornadoes' around the Milky Way's core

Swirling through the Milky Way's central zone, in the turbulent region surrounding the supermassive black hole at the core of our galaxy, dust and gases constantly churn as energetic shock waves ripple throughout. An international team of astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have sharpened our view of this action by a factor of 100, discovering a surprising new filamentary structure in this mysterious region of space.
