UnitedHealthcare Covers Double Mastectomies for 17-Year-Olds With Gender Dysphoria

America’s largest health insurance company covers double mastectomies for some 17-year-old girls who identify as transgender. UnitedHealthcare’s “Gender Dysphoria Treatment” guide, which took effect Dec. 1, says: “For mastectomy or breast reduction, individuals must be at least 18 years of age; however, individuals within one calendar year of turning 18 can be considered on a case-by-case basis.” UnitedHealthcare didn’t immediately respond to The Daily Signal‘s request for comment on the circumstances in which the health insurance company would cover double mastectomies for minors or how often it makes exceptions. Some insurance providers cover transgender medical interventions for minors, though many shy away from funding surgeries. Premera Blue Cross covers “non-surgical medical treatment (such as mental health visits and hormone therapy for adolescents) for minors with a diagnosis of gender dysphoria.” Aetna requires 12 months of “continuous hormone therapy as appropriate to the member’s gender goals” before minors receive “gender-affirming” facial feminization and body-contouring services. Such procedures make a person’s face and body look more like that of the opposite sex. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield allows 18-year-olds who meet its “gender-affirming chest procedure criteria” to “request further consideration” about obtaining a double mastectomy from a “provider with experience treating adolescents with gender dysphoria.” None of these health insurance providers immediately responded to The Daily Signal’s requests for comment before publication. Female detransitioners who underwent double mastectomies as minors and lived to regret it have warned against allowing children to consent to procedures with life-long consequences. Chloe Cole, 20, got a double mastectomy at 15 only to regret it a few months later. She calls this “the biggest mistake of my life.” Clementine Breen, 20, began taking puberty blockers at 12 and testosterone at 13. She had “top surgery”—a double mastectomy—at 14. Breen says her mental state immediately got worse. Her anxiety developed into what she describes as a “psychotic break.” “What really, really upset me is that I will never be able to breastfeed, and I will have to get surgery every 10 years to replace the implants, and it won’t look as natural as it should have been,” Breen told The Daily Signal. “I will never know what my body should have looked like.” Brian Thompson, UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, was gunned down early Dec. 4 outside an annual shareholders’ meeting in New York City. His accused killer was extradited Thursday from Pennsylvania back to New York, where he faces state and federal charges, Fox News reported. The Top Winter Survival Plants You NEED to Have on Hand

Winter survival plants are few and far between, but that doesn’t mean foraging is impossible when the cold hits. If anything, this is the time when foraging skills can be most useful. So if you’re up for a bit of a challenge this winter, put your skills to the test by hunting down these winter survival plants. Related: 10 Winter Survival Skills You Should Know To Make Your Homestead Thrive Winter Survival Plants You Should Start Growing Now Thistle Depending on your latitude, sometimes it can feel like the only thing that grows in winter are the weeds. Luckily, this doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Almost all thistles found in the continental United States are not only non-poisonous, but also generally edible. In fact, thistles have been used throughout history for human consumption, and make for one of the most common survival plants. Over in southern Europe, various types of thistles have long been used in rural areas as a cheap source of easy food. Meanwhile, in Japan, they farm the cabbage thistle (Cirsium oleraceum) traditionally. Similar practices were once common in India as well. Human consumption of thistles was also likely common in antiquity. Even the genus name, Cirsium, comes from a Greek word meaning “swollen vein” – a reminder of a time when thistles were used as a treatment for swollen veins. How to prepare: There are many ways to prepare thistles, though most of them start with the root. The secret is to use a spade to gently push the taproot to the surface. Remove the spiny stem and clean the root well. At this point, the root is edible raw, though it’ll either have no taste or be a bit bitter. Either way, it’s not pleasant, but better than starving. If you’d rather something tastier, treat the thistle roots just like any other; boiled, fried, or even roasted. Personally, I’d recommend lightly fried with a bit of salt and chili. The chili can do wonders to cover up the otherwise lousy taste. Hickory Nuts These guys are some of the best eats you’ll get all winter. Much like walnuts, hickories taste good and pack a serious caloric punch. Edible species are usually sweet and delicious. Some like the shagbark hickory can be slightly bitter, but never overwhelmingly so. If you find some that taste seriously bitter or otherwise downright unpleasant, then don’t eat them! As for calories, we’re talking around 193 per ounce. To put that in perspective, hazelnuts have just 170. In winter, you should probably hunt for fully mature hickory nuts, meaning they’ll be a rich dark brown, and should be no more than 2.5 inches long and wide. The nut itself will be inside a larger husk, which is usually fairly easy to separate. The hard part is how to open the nut itself. Like walnuts, they can be a bit stubborn, but shouldn’t stand much of a chance against a hammer or ordinary nutcracker. Overall, the humble hickory is one of the most sustaining winter survival plants you can be lucky enough to stumble across. How to prepare: Consume hickory nuts either raw or cooked. Toss them in with salads, or otherwise used like walnut or similar. Try experimenting. I’ve heard they can even make a decent pie. Follow any recipe for regular pecan pie, but substitute the pecans for hickories. Personally though, I think they’re best roasted over an open flame. Other options include lightly toasting or baking. If you’re planning on storing them for long periods, make sure to subject them to the float test. Any nuts that float on water contaminated by grubs. You should consume/throw away immediately. Wild Onions All plants of the allium genus are edible. You might know a few already: onion, garlic, leek and chive being among the most commonly consumed. However, allium is more than just these four commercially produced foods. You can find dozens of types across the United States, with over 500 currently known to exist worldwide. The hundreds of types that aren’t cultivated commercially are collectively called “wild onions”. All are edible, though taste varies considerably. As the name suggests, many taste just like onion, while others can be a little garlicky. Some don’t really have much of a taste at all, but are still easy to get down. Better still, wild onions can grow year-round, making them one of the easiest winter survival plants to forage. As long as they get a bit of sun, they can grow. Open fields are your best bet for foraging. The only problem is wild onions can be hard to distinguish from poisonous lilies. Some signs you’re dealing with a legitimate wild onion include keeping an eye out for the distinct, bulb-shaped root, and sniffing for that classic onion smell. If the leaves don’t smell, try cutting a small incision in the root. As always though, if you’re not 100 percent certain, don’t take the risk. How to prepare: Treat wild onions just like regular onions. You can eat them both raw and cooked. Depending on the taste, you might want to consider boiling or stewing. So far, the only times I’ve used them have been with some instant ramen on the trail. They actually added a good amount of flavor, and were genuinely tasty. Pine Nuts Not the most reliable of winter survival plants, you can’t necessarily expect to find too many edible pine nuts during the dead of winter. Usually, the nuts are ready to eat around a week to 10 days before the pine cone itself opens. As anyone who has ever enjoyed a spring stroll through the countryside knows, the cones tend to start opening around mid-spring. Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean you can't count them among the more important winter survival plants. On the contrary, pine nuts are often still easy to forage even in late autumn, making them a great food to stock up on in early winter. The trick is to look for a tree with both open and closed cones. Grab a few of the closed ones, and expose them to heat to make them open. An open fire will do the trick, though stay away from microwaves (trust me, you’ll just ruin both the nuts and the microwave itself). All pine nuts are edible, though some are easier to munch down than others. The best are the biggest ones, such as the Colorado pinyon. I find the New Mexico pinyon has a wonderful buttery taste, and can be found up the east coast. How to prepare: The various uses of pine nuts are worth an entire article on their own. For brevity’s sake, some of the common applications include: in salad, homemade pesto, roasted or even in soups. You can add them to marzipan balls to make a classic Catalan dessert, the panellet. In rural Russia, pine nuts have been traditionally added to vodka bottles to make a drink called “kedrovka”. The oils from the nuts seep into the vodka, and can turn bottom-shelf booze into a delicious treat that will keep you warm till spring. Related: 15 Delectable Edibles You Can Grow In Your Indoor Winter Garden Pine Bark If you discover your pine tree is out of nuts, then don’t worry: there’s still a feed to have. Cut through the rough exterior of the trunk and extract the softer bark beneath. It might not sound appetizing, but pine bark is surprisingly starchy, and can fill you up on a cold winter day. The same can be said for a handful of other trees with edible bark, such as the maple, beech and aspen. In other words, all these common trees are, in themselves, great winter survival plants. How to prepare: One trendy way to prepare pine bark is to make vegan bacon. Marinate the bark in salt, then roast til crispy. If you close your eyes and think positive thoughts, it can almost taste like the worst bacon you’ve ever eaten. In all seriousness though, pine bark is an extremely useful winter survival food. It’s common, easy to forage, and simple to prepare. Cattails The supermarket of the swamps is open all year round. Cattails are a classic survival food that every survivalist should know how to use. These common plants are incredibly useful, with each part of the cattail having a practical application. As one of the most easily obtained winter survival plants, they excel thanks to their high starch content. You should try searching along the shores of swampy waters, and prepare to get a bit muddy while foraging. How to prepare: Cattail roots should be thoroughly cleaned and peeled, before being used much like any other root. Eat them raw, but are much better boiled or fried. Just treat them like potatoes, and you can’t go wrong. The shoots, on the other hand, can be genuinely delicious. Clean them, soak in vinegar, then prepare them as you would a similar green vegetable. Personally, I find they’re pretty good when chopped thin, and fried in oil. Then, smother them in butter and eat with roasted potatoes. You’ll be surprised by how good they taste. Eastern Teaberry You probably didn’t expect to see any berries on this list, but the teaberry can’t go unmentioned. Found across much of North America, the eastern teaberry is around 6-9mm wide with a reddish color. You'll find them growing on low bushes, and forage them all year round, making them one of the more reliable winter survival plants on the east coast. The best place to look is in hardwood forests, especially among pines. Look out for sunny clearings in the forest, where the berries are most common. If there’s snow, just scratch beneath the surface, and you might get lucky. As for taste, expect something distinctly minty. How to prepare: In some parts of the east coast, teaberries are serious business. You can find teaberry flavored ice-cream, gum and tea. New England is particularly fond of teaberries. You can eat the berries raw, and they usually pack a lot of flavor. You can use the leaves to make an excellent tea, though you’ll have to dry and prepare them as you would any other tea. Ideally, you should also ferment them for 2-4 days to maximize their potency. Dandelions Usually considered more of a spring survival food, dandelions are still extremely useful in winter. Long after the flower has withered, the rest of the plant is still perfectly edible. Dandelions are super common, and even in winter you shouldn’t have trouble finding a few plants. How to prepare: You can eat the dandelion plant raw, but tastes pretty mediocre. Frankly, I find them better when boiled, which dulls the bitter taste somewhat. Watercress This common plant grows all year round across North America. Look for it in shallow, running streams, with each stem usually having somewhere between three and nine small oval leaves. The taste is nothing to write home about, though the leaves are rich in vitamins, calcium and iron. Some traditional societies have used watercress to treat minor ailments such as coughs. However, it’s also a diuretic (it’ll make you pee a lot). So if you’re concerned about hydration, give watercress a miss. If you’re keen on trying watercress, it’s not hard to find in shallow streams. In winter, the plant does shrivel up a lot, and can be hard to forage. Also, avoid watercress in unclean water. The plant is like a sponge for toxins, and can make you quite ill if it's been growing in contaminated water. As for the harvesting process itself, it’s pretty simple. Bring along a pair of scissors, and snip the plant at the waterline. You can also just rip it out at the root, but this is more labor-intensive, and you’ll have to remove the grimy roots later anyway. How to prepare: Watercress is best used like collards. Cook them, and toss ‘em in with some vegetables. You can eat them raw, though they don’t make for a particularly satisfying meal on their own. One good option is to make a salad with watercress leaves and hickory nuts. The flavors go together really well, especially if you throw in some pine nuts and oranges. Drizzle with a nice zesty vinaigrette, and you’ve got a respectable salad. If you’re going to store your watercress, that’s totally possible, but be careful. Keep them in shallow, clean water, and change the water everyday. If they smell bad or start looking downright disgusting, throw them out immediately. ‘The View’ host STANDS UP for RFK Jr.; calls out food industry and Western medicine

Americans were told to “trust the science” when it couldn’t have been clearer that those behind “the science” were lying to them. But while much of the country has woken up to the obvious, the mainstream media is still trying to keep the rest fast asleep — especially when it comes to truth-teller Robert F. Kennedy Jr. preparing to take his position leading the HHS in the Trump administration. “This guy, RFK Jr., has made it very clear that he is a vaccine skeptic, and what we have to remember is it’s not going to be a narrow position. If you are the head of the Department of Health and Human Services, that’s a very big, big, broad position. Not a narrow position,” Sunny Hostin said in a recent segment on "The View." “They’re not just going to put him in charge of food, they’re going to put him in charge of everything. And what he just refused to answer, in terms of some questions for CNN, is he refused to answer about whether he stands by his previous comments tying vaccines to autism,” Hostin continued. “That’s all you need to know about him. He refused to answer the questions. And the other thing he said was he plans to question the entire science of vaccines,” she added, noting that “we know that vaccines work, we know that vaccines save lives.” However, her fellow panelist Sara Haines has a different view. “I have a Chinese, Western-trained doctor who has pointed out where the Western medicine gets it wrong,” Haines responded. “We live in a country where crap is put in our food that makes us sick, and then pharmaceuticals come in and throw pills at it.” “So we’re living in a cycle where it feeds the corporate greed to keep us not well,” she added. Like Haines, Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” couldn’t disagree with Hostin more. “He’s not just going to come in and ruin the place and just completely ignore science. He’s going to look around and be like, ‘Who is connected to vaccine makers, and why were you on the board over here? And was there proper efficacy checked on this?’” Rubin says. “Sara Haines, I’ll give her credit, because she’s now repeating what RFK [Jr.] has been saying for really, for 40 years, but particularly in this past year as he was running for president. Which is that there’s a food system designed to make us sick, and a pharmaceutical system designed to deal with the ailments, thus profiting the systems, having nothing to do with the health of the people,” he adds. Another woke loss: Parents score victory as Disney walks back plans for transgender character in animated series for children

Parents with traditional values scored an important victory as Disney bent the knee and scrapped plans to have a transgender character in an upcoming animated series aimed at children. "Win or Lose" is an animated series produced by the Pixar Animation Studios. The children's show "follows the intertwined stories of eight different characters as they each prepare for their big championship softball game."In recent years, Disney has suffered backlash and box office bombs because shows and movies aggressively propagated overtly leftist narratives to kids. One of the characters in the series based on middle-school-aged children set to release on the Disney+ streaming service in February was previously slated to feature a transgender storyline. However, that LGBTQ narrative has been axed from the show at a time when audiences have consistently repudiated entertainment that pushes a woke agenda toward young children. According to the Hollywood Reporter, "The character remains in the show, but a few lines of dialogue that referenced gender identity are being removed. A source close to 'Win or Lose' said the studio made the decision to alter course several months ago."A Disney spokesperson conceded, "When it comes to animated content for a younger audience, we recognize that many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their own terms and timeline."Pink News reported that the transgender character's storyline was "seemingly set to have scenes in which they struggled with gender dysphoria."The character is to be voiced by 18-year-old transgender actress Chanel Stewart.Liberals launched a petition to have the transgender storyline reinstated. "It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to know that this is blatantly an empty damage-control statement that spits in the face of the value of LGBTQ+ representation in family media," the petition said of the Disney statement. "In the troubling, frightening times we live in, where LGBTQ+ individuals and communities continue to be threatened with persecution and denial of basic human rights, this continued suppression of authentic, meaningful queer storytelling simply cannot be accepted," the petition read. The petition demanded Disney executives reverse their "cowardly, spineless decision to suppress queer voices for the sake of monetary gain from hateful, bigoted conservatives that they're so afraid of alienating for foolish reasons."At the time of publication, the petition had just over 5,000 signatures. In recent years, Disney has suffered backlash and box office bombs because shows and movies aggressively propagated overtly leftist narratives to kids. Last year, Disney's "Elemental" animated movie featured a nonbinary character and tackled racism and xenophobia. However, the children's movie flopped at the box office. As Blaze News previously reported, "Elemental" had the worst opening for a Pixar movie. In November 2023, the Walt Disney Company admitted that culture wars have had significant impacts across the board on the multinational entertainment and media conglomerate. As Blaze News previously reported, Disney warned investors that the company's wokeness presents risks to its "reputation and brands" in its annual financial report with the Securities and Exchange Commission. In March 2022, Disney inserted itself into the debate over Florida's Parental Rights in Education bill. As retaliation, Disney's Pixar Animation Studios restored a same-sex kiss in its highly anticipated "Lightyear" movie. As Blaze News previously reported, "Lightyear" tanked at the box office. However, the liberal activism proved costly for the house of mouse when Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis revoked the Walt Disney Company’s special district status in the Sunshine State. In June 2022, Disney's new show "Baymax!" featured a transgender character and there were mentions of menstrual product recommendations from an individual who is wearing a shirt that resembles the colors of a transgender pride flag.In November 2022, the Walt Disney Company suffered another box office bust with the "Strange World" film, the house of mouse's first movie to feature an openly gay teen relationship. Biden cancels student debt for public service workers and gets ferocious backlash

President Joe Biden announced another round of student debt forgiveness, this time for public service workers, and critics immediately lambasted him on social media. While Biden made student loan forgiveness a promise in his 2016 presidential campaign, court challenges have stymied his efforts to redistribute the debt without congressional approval. On Friday, he said that his administration had been able to orchestrate another handout. 'They learned that they don’t have to be responsible for themselves, that someone else will pay — making them devoted slaves.' "The 55,000 public servants approved for debt cancellation today are workers who have dedicated their lives to giving back to their communities. Now, they are finally earning the relief they are entitled to under the law," read a message attributed to Biden on social media. The announcement was immediately assailed on social media. "Why should the 87% of Americans WITHOUT student loans be forced to pay for those that do? This isn’t loan “forgiveness,” it’s debt redistribution," responded Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama. "They sure as hell didn’t earn anything. They learned that they don’t have to be responsible for themselves, that someone else will pay — making them devoted slaves," replied financial author Porter Stansberry. "Whoever is running the Biden administration wants to give away cash to government union members in violation of federal law. This is a crime," claimed Tom Fitton of Judicial Watch. "So people who didn't attend college- waitresses, plumbers, electricians, construction workers, small business owners- they must now subsidize the education loans of government bureaucrats who, by Harris' own admission, didn't need a college degree to do their job?" read another popular response. The Congressional Budgeting Office has estimated that one of Biden's student loan forgiveness plans would contribute to a 27% shortfall in the budget. Like Blaze News?
