Blank curse tablets‚ miniature votive axes found at Roman villa site

An excavation at the site of a real estate development in Grove‚ Oxfordshire‚ has uncovered the remains of a richly-decorated Roman villa complex that contained a wealth of artifacts including coins‚ jewelry‚ lead curse tablets without curses and tiny votive axes. It had a long period of occupation‚ from construction in the 1st or 2nd century through abandonment in the late 4th or early 5th century.During a year of excavation‚ archaeologists from the Red River Archaeology Group unearthed a monumental aisled building with internal colonnades typical of the late 1st century A.D. The building was likely multistorey and almost 11‚000 square feet just on the ground floor. No columns have survived‚ but four column bases have and they are among the largest of their kind ever found in Roman Britain.Adjacent to that building is a winged corridor villa characterized by a central group of rooms flanked on each side by wings of rooms accessed by a central corridor. It had walls painted with floral motifs and mosaic floors as well as an intricate brickwork floor. Hypocaust tiles have been found‚ the remnants of a hypocaust underfloor heating system for private bathhouses. A cereal drying oven was also discovered‚ part of the complexs agricultural and food storage function.Hundreds of coins‚ rings and brooches have been found in the villa complex. One particularly significant piece is a double horse-head brooch or buckle dating to between 350 and 450 A.D. It was likely worn by a member of the military elites. They also found several axes small enough to fit in a palm‚ and a number of tightly scrolled lead strips look just like curse tablets. The ones that have been unfurled so far are blank on the inside. If they were meant to curse‚ the curse itself was left unwritten. The mini axes coupled with the mysterious curse-like scrolls‚ suggest the villa or some part of the complex was a site of pilgrimage or ritual significance. The sheer size of the buildings that still survive and the richness of goods recovered suggest this was a dominant feature in the locality‚ if not the wider landscape‚ Louis Stafford‚ Red River Archaeology senior project manager‚ said.Her colleague Francesca Giarelli added the site was far more complex than a regular rural site and clearly was an important centre of activities for a long time.Here is a drone video flyover of the site:

What We Know About Bidens New Student Loan Forgiveness Plan

What We Know About Bidens New Student Loan Forgiveness Plan

President Joe Biden announced a new student loan forgiveness plan early Monday morning. But who qualifies for forgiveness? Will the president succeed with his efforts‚ or will the courts block this plan as they did with the last one? Madison Marino‚ a senior research associate‚ in The Heritage Foundations Center for Education Policy‚ joins The Daily Signal Podcast afternoon edition to answer these questions. Listen to the podcast below or read the lightly edited transcript: Virginia Allen: What do we know right now about this student loan forgiveness plan? Who exactly is eligible?Madison Marino: Yeah‚ we know that‚ you know‚ President Biden is today pitching kind of the new details of what hes calling his Plan B on student loan mass cancellation in Madison‚ Wisconsin‚ today. What we know is‚ this is his second attempt at mass loan cancellation. Again‚ hes doing it through regulation. So‚ going around Congress with a proposed rule‚ probably thats going to give us more details about what exactly the loan cancellation will entail over the next couple of weeks. So what were kind of thinking just based on the negotiated rulemaking thats been happening over at the department‚ were expecting that with this new regulation the Education Secretary [Miguel] Cardona will be able to cancel debt for borrowers he expects to default because theyre experiencing hardship. Now‚ what is that hardship? We dont know exactly. And then also the rule would allow for loan cancellation for those who have seen balances rise because of maybe accrued interest or those who have been paying for about 20 plus years.Allen: That does sound very broad to say‚ canceling for those experiencing hardship‚ as Im sure many people might say‚ Im experiencing hardship‚ but on paper maybe theyre making a decent salary. So how do you think the Biden administration is going to define hardship?Madison Marino: Absolutely. So‚ kind of what weve seen come out of the negotiated rulemaking committee is that the definition of hardship is very vague. Like youve‚ like youve mentioned‚ were thinking that it might include those who are Pell Grant recipients or those who are not able to‚ they were not able to finish their degree‚ which our concern is that together just those two factors would account for about 71% of college students nationwide. So‚ and it could maybe create even a perverse incentive to not pay back your loans if you werent‚ if you maybe were not able to finish a degree.Allen: We saw‚ of course‚ with the last time the president tried to do mass student loan forgiveness that ultimately that plan failed and was blocked by the courts. What are we going to see with this‚ do you think a similar situation will play out?Madison Marino: Yes‚ yes. So yeah‚ kind of what were thinking is that‚ you know‚ this is a major overstep of what he can do as president. He really does have no constitutional authority for mass cancellation. Its being done without express congressional authorization. And so were thinking that‚ you know‚ just like the Supreme Court struck down his first initial plan on mass cancellation‚ were thinking that more lawsuits will follow once the rule comes out‚ probably in the next couple of weeks. And hopefully well see a similar situation happen with the courts.Allen: Madison‚ everyone can agree‚ whether Republican or Democrat‚ that we have a problem in regards to student loans. Now solutions vary‚ and opinions on those solutions vary‚ but what would you say‚ how do we address what ultimately has become a bit of a crisis where you have so many Americans with massive debt and so many Americans‚ young people‚ still going to college‚ taking out massive student loan debt. How do we stop this?Madison Marino: Absolutely. So I think Congress really has the option to weigh in here. Theyre the ones that address the higher cost of college. A massive loan cancellation like the Biden administrations doing will only incentivize colleges to keep raising their tuition prices if they think the government‚ which is the American taxpayer‚ are going to be the ones that will pay for it ultimately. So‚ theres several bills out there. The College Cost Reduction Act put together by Virginia Foxx‚ that House Education Workforce [Committee] chairwoman‚ is a great example of those that will potentially kind of lower the cost of higher education over the long term. So just really looking to Congress to see what they can do to and not the president and pursuing his massive loan cancellation.The post What We Know About Bidens New Student Loan Forgiveness Plan appeared first on The Daily Signal.

NewsBusters Podcast: The Leftist Media Often Can';t ';Get Religion';

As the media bring their leftist lens to the ";culture wars"; and religion in politics‚ they';re prone to simplifying everything and only covering religion when it intrudes on the new orthodoxy of wokeness. Terry Mattingly operated the site GetReligion for 20 years‚ and he explains how he assesses the media';s handling of religion stories.We know several things from years of study. First‚ the media report very few religion stories. Second‚ the religion stories they choose to do typically focus on when churches are interjecting into the political arena (which secular reporters don';t like). Third‚ since reporters are generally not religiously observant people‚ they show their ignorance of internal church matters‚ and bored with controversies like Catholics struggling with the Traditional Latin Mass‚ or religious concepts like sin and repentance.Then we focus on some recent controversies. On Monday‚ the Vatican released a document with a strong critique of ";gender theory"; and what non-religious reporters call ";gender-affirming surgery."; Mattingly says the media embrace of nonsensical terms like this underline they are orthodox believers‚ but in an opposing orthodoxy to traditional religions. Mattingly suggests Pope Francis seems to side with Biden against those American Catholics who would propose excommunication.This broad acceptance leads to Biden and the media presenting the president as a ";devout Catholic."; He may attend church‚ but he is dramatically rejecting his church';s teaching on abortion and sexuality. We explore the clash between Easter Sunday and the Transgender Day of Visibility‚ which pro-Biden reporters wanted to dismiss that there was any ideological or theological clash in these celebrations.There was Donald Trump promoting a ";God Bless the USA Bible‚"; and how everyone knows his personal behavior can';t be seen as ";Christ-like."; But reporters try to suggest that Trump can';t pigeonhole Biden as an opponent of Christianity‚ since he attends church services.Mattingly wraps up with 3 Big Questions for religious people facing a screen-obsessed culture‚ and he says churches need to engage with their flocks on these measures of your faith:1. How do you spend your time?2. How do you spend your money?3. How do you make decisions?Enjoy the podcast below or wherever you listen to podcasts.

NAIA unanimously votes to ban transgender athletes in women';s sports‚ LGBTQ+ groups are outraged

A national college organization voted unanimously to ban transgender athletes in sports on Monday.The Council of Presidents on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics voted 20-0 to expand their previous restriction on postseason competition to all competitions.";We know there are a lot of different opinions out there‚"; NAIA president Jim Carr said to CBS Sports.";For us‚ we believed our first responsibility was to create fairness and competition in the NAIA‚"; Carr added. ";We also think it aligns with the reasons Title IX was created. You';re allowed to have separate but equal opportunities for women to compete.";The new policy restricts athletes from competing in female sports to those who were born female. It also restricts those competitions from athletes who have begun masculinizing hormone therapy as part of gender transitioning.";It';s important to know that the male sports are open to anyone‚"; Carr said. Council of Presidents chair and St. Ambrose University president Amy Novak explained the reasons behind the vote.";The task force spent nearly two years reviewing research‚ meeting with experts to better understand potential policy challenges‚ and obtaining feedback from multiple membership groups‚"; said Novak.";With this policy‚ the NAIA has made its best effort to allow for the inclusion of transgender athletes in any way which does not impact the competitive fairness of women';s sports‚"; she added. ";Our priority is to protect the integrity of women';s athletics and allow them equal opportunity to succeed.";National Women';s Law Center special counsel Shiwali Patel expressed outrage against the vote. ";This is unacceptable and blatant discrimination that not only harms trans‚ nonbinary and intersex individuals‚ but limits the potential of all athletes‚"; said Patel in a statement on the website. ";It';s important to recognize that these discriminatory policies don';t enhance fairness in competition. Instead‚ they send a message of exclusion and reinforce dangerous stereotypes that harm all women.";The sports LGBTQ+ organization Athlete Ally also registered its outrage against the NAIA. This policy is a failure of leadership by NAIA and marks a sad day for womens sports‚ read a statement from the group. We hope other sport governing bodies dont also succumb to political pressure‚ and instead fight for a future of sports where everyone belongs.Patel went on to demand that the Biden administration clarify Title IX rules in order to classify transgender bans as unlawful. The NAIA is headquartered in Kansas City‚ Missouri‚ and governs athletic competitions at 241 small and private colleges. Here';s more about the transgender debate: Like Blaze News?
