The Swedish Migration Agency is required to pay hundreds of millions of kronor in compensation from landlords who rented out housing to the authority. The reason is that they had their properties destroyed by the asylum seekers who lived in them.

One of the affected landlords is Bjarke Laustsen in Bjuv outside Helsingborg. He rented out five newly renovated apartments to the Swedish Migration Board in 2013, which they let the asylum seekers live in.

- When they rented the property in 2013, everything was in new condition. New windows, new decor, all finishes were new. And when they left in 2018, it is a pure ruin. Pure ruckel, he tells Hem & hyra .

Laustsen shows how the residents tore down lamps, electrical cabinets, doors and heating elements. The floors have been completely destroyed, the sink in the bathroom has been broken and the shelves on the wall have been torn down on the floor.

Two of the apartments have burned down.

Requires compensation
Bjarke Laustsen wants the Swedish Migration Agency to compensate him for the destruction, something they promised to do already when he signed a contract with them in 2013. In total, he wants SEK 6.9 million. However, the authority has only agreed to pay SEK 122,000, including VAT.

Laustsen tells Hem & hyra that he will never rent to the Swedish Migration Board again.

- It will never happen again. I can not afford to rent to the Swedish Migration Agency, it is too expensive, he says.

He has now gone to court to collect the money.


Hundreds of millions are required
Bjarke Laustsen is far from the only landlord who has suffered from ruined apartments after renting out to asylum seekers. From 2018 until this spring, the authority had received eviction requests totaling SEK 220 million from more than a hundred landlords.

The biggest demand is from Hultsfred's homes. There, the apartments rented out to refugees have been so destroyed that the municipality decided that they should be demolished. A decision to demolish 108 apartments has already been made, and during the autumn a decision to demolish another 50 will be made.

For the ravages of asylum seekers, Hultsfred's homes are demanding compensation from the Swedish Migration Board of SEK 54.7 million. To date, the authority has paid less than one-tenth of that requirement.
