Former President Donald Trump said on Thursday morning that demonstrators who light the American flag on fire should face a one-year jail sentence. Trump called for jail sentences for flag burners during an interview with “Fox & Friends” hosts the day after anti-Israel protesters gathered in Washington, D.C., and burned an American flag as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed Congress. “Rarely have we seen anything like this,” Trump said. “And I think you should get a one-year jail sentence if you do anything to desecrate the American flag. Now people will say, ‘Oh, it’s unconstitutional.’ Those are stupid people. Those are stupid people that say that.” “We have to work in Congress to get a one-year jail sentence,” he added. “When they’re allowed to stomp on the flag and put lighter fluid on the flag and set it afire — when you’re allowed to do that — you get a one-year jail sentence, and you’ll never see it again. And all over the world, Putin and President Xi of China, all over the world they’re watching this. Kim Jong Un, he looks at us like we’re a bunch of babies. The protesters chanted “Allahu Akbar” and painted the words “Hamas,” “Gaza,” and “Free Palestine” on a monument outside of Union Station. Hamas flags and headbands were also spotted on Capitol Hill. As Trump calls for flag burners to be jailed, some Republicans have introduced legislation “to deport any foreigner involved in violence and vandalism on federal property,” according to Sen. In the 1980s, a Texas man named Gregory Lee Johnson was sentenced to one year in jail for burning an American flag to protest the Reagan administration. A Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reversed Johnson’s conviction, and the Supreme Court ruled in Johnson v. Texas in 1989 that the Texas man’s burning of the flag was protected speech under the First Amendment. The 5-4 majority opinion was written by liberal Justice William Brennan Jr. and joined by conservative Justices Anthony Kennedy and Antonin Scalia. Shortly before his death, in a 2015 public appearance, Scalia commented on the precedent-setting 1989 decision, saying, “If it were up to me, I would put in jail every sandal-wearing, scruffy bearded weirdo who burns the American flag. But I am not king.”

Southwest Airlines is ending its policy which allows customers open seating on flights.  The airline has been unique in the industry for its open seating policy, which has been in place for the 50-year existence of the company.   Southwest’s unofficial motto used to be: “You can sit anywhere you want — just like at church.” But now, due to changing customer preferences, the company will move to a more traditional assigned seating plan with premium seating available for an upcharge. The announcement on Thursday noted how “the research is clear and indicates that 80% of Southwest Customers, and 86% of potential Customers, prefer an assigned seat.” “Moving to assigned seating and offering premium legroom options will be a transformational change that cuts across almost all aspects of the Company,” said Bob Jordan, President, CEO, & Vice Chairman of the Board.  “Although our unique open seating model has been a part of Southwest Airlines since our inception, our thoughtful and extensive research makes it clear this is the right choice—at the right time—for our Customers, our People, and our Shareholders. We are excited to incorporate Customer and Employee feedback to design a unique experience that only Southwest can deliver.” He added, “We have been building purposefully to this change as part of a comprehensive upgrade to the Southwest experience as we focus on Customer expectations – and it will unlock new sources of revenue consistent with our laser focus on delivering improved financial performance.” In addition to changing the seat assignment procedures, Southwest Airlines announced that it will add redeye flights to its schedule. The first overnight flights will become available in select markets beginning in February 2025. The change comes as Southwest’s revenue is down and the company battles safety concerns over its Boeing planes. “We are taking urgent and deliberate steps to mitigate near-term revenue challenges and implement longer-term transformational initiatives that are designed to drive meaningful top and bottom-line growth,” Jordan said of the change. In April, a Southwest Boeing plane going from Denver to Houston was forced to make an emergency landing after the cover ripped off one of the plane’s engines and struck the wing flap.

The animals are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act.
