A YouTuber Recreated The "Trolley Problem" In Real Life

A YouTuber has recreated the trolley problem‚ the moral philosophy conundrum in which you are asked whether it is morally justifiable to kill one person in order to save five. The original problem was posed by philosopher Philippa Foot‚ and later popularized in an article by philosopher Judith Jarvis Thomson."Suppose you are the driver of a trolley. The trolley rounds a bend‚ and there come into view ahead five track workmen‚ who have been repairing the track. The track goes through a bit of a valley at that point‚ and the sides are steep‚ so you must stop the trolley if you are to avoid running the five men down. You step on the brakes‚ but alas they don't work. Now you suddenly see a spur of track leading off to the right‚" Jarvis Thompson outlined in a paper."You can turn the trolley onto it‚ and thus save the five men on the straight track ahead. Unfortunately‚ Mrs. Foot has arranged that there is one track workman on that spur of track. He can no more get off the track in time than the five can‚ so you will kill him if you turn the trolley onto him. Is it morally permissible for you to turn the trolley? Everybody to whom I have put this hypothetical case says‚ Yes‚ it is."When asked in the abstract‚ the majority of people will say it is morally permissible to pull the lever‚ and kill one person to save five. Toddlers‚ meanwhile‚ will merely add the one person to the pile of five and let the train do its work.                   But‚ let's face it‚ the problem is pretty abstract. Make it less abstract‚ such as an update where you must push someone off a bridge to slow down the train before it hits five people‚ and fewer people believe it is the morally correct course of action. So‚ what would people do in a real-life situation‚ or as close as we can approximate that without killing a lot of people on train tracks?YouTube channel Vsauce tested this in a 2017 experiment‚ involving a number of deceptions to convince participants that they were really being presented with this choice. Michael Stevens‚ who runs Vsauce‚ was aware that the experiment would convince participants that they had killed one or more people through action or inaction‚ should all go to plan. Attempting to minimize potential harm from conducting the experiment‚ his team told volunteers they were participating in a focus group‚ allowing them to screen out people with a history of mental illness or prior trauma from participating. To conduct the experiment‚ Vsauce hired actors to portray workers standing on the tracks‚ and recording footage (spliced in later) of a train going down the tracks towards them. The seven participants‚ chosen by a clinical psychologist‚ were then told they were taking part in a focus test near an old train station. While they were waiting for the "test" to begin‚ they were offered the chance to cool down in the remote switching station nearby. Here‚ an actor playing a rail worker explained how he could switch the track remotely using a lever‚ before leaving the participant alone in the room‚ pretending he had a task to take care of but that somebody needed to remain in the room at all times. The pre-prepared video was then played to the participants‚ making it appear as if a train was barreling towards five people‚ but that they could stop it by pulling the lever‚ dooming one. Several warnings were played‚ explaining that a train was approaching and attention was needed. Before the train "hits"‚ the screen turns to black and displays the message "End of test‚ everyone is safe‚" repeatedly. There are still quite a few ethical questions surrounding the experiment‚ despite steps taken to ensure that participants were ok‚ and it's far from clear that this setup would pass an ethics board review if the experiment was conducted at a university.Nevertheless‚ it is interesting to see how people responded to the situation overall‚ and the eventual decisions they made.Participants described being terrified or anxious‚ suggesting that they believed the experiment was real. Some‚ though‚ believed that that there must be other safety mechanisms in place‚ or that the workers would notice the trains coming towards them‚ resolving them of the responsibility apparently in front of them. Though there's not much you can extrapolate from such a small study with possible validity issues (did they really believe the situation? Why did most of them choose not to seek help?)‚ out of the seven participants‚ two chose to press the button to switch the tracks."I felt the pressure‚" one participant explained. "I'm like‚ 'Oh‚ my gosh‚ these people are going to die.' I had to make a very quick and sound decision‚ like‚ immediately‚ right now‚ right this second. Their lives were in my hands. I need to change it to track two [...] so I can save more lives."Another explained that he was terrified but made the choice to save five families rather than one. Two out of seven chose to switch tracks‚ which is lower than when the question is put to people in the abstract. However‚ as Stevens later acknowledged‚ you cannot learn a whole lot from such a small experiment."It functioned more as a trial study to see what variables matter‚" Stevens explained in Reddit AMA‚ "what issues we hadn’t foreseen‚ and to help future studies and experiments be designed with better and better approaches."Given the ethical minefield involved in creating such an experiment‚ it's unlikely we'll see a follow-up anytime soon.[H/T: No Such Thing As A Fish]

It Takes Three Zebrafish To Make A School‚ Two Won’t Do

It Takes Three Zebrafish To Make A School‚ Two Won’t Do

How many fish does it take to make a school? The answer may vary‚ but for the much-studied zebrafish‚ the answer is three. Put a triad of the little fish together and they will display the same schooling behavior that can save their lives in larger numbers. Two zebrafish act quite differently. Some birds have been claimed (possibly incorrectly) to count: “One‚ two‚ many‚” allowing the theft of a fourth or fifth egg from their clutch without distress‚ as they consider there to be “many” remaining. Something similar may be going on with zebrafish‚ except that in this case the individual fish doing the counting is one of the three. For small fish‚ the safest place is usually a crowd‚ whose schooling behavior makes it hard for predators to catch them (although not so much for humans with nets). Schooling fish have developed ways to relate to each other that maintain cohesion‚ causing the whole school to make the quick adjustments to direction that can keep most of them alive. This behavior has been heavily studied and scientists are interested in the minimum numbers required for it to occur. Curiously‚ it’s physicists‚ not zoologists‚ who have found the answer. The researchers had to step outside their usual territory‚ applying an understanding of fluid dynamics and pair and triplet correlations from thermodynamics to fish. After fitting an aquarium with synchronized cameras that can track fish’s movements in three dimensions the team put differing numbers of zebrafish in the tank to investigate their behavior. With 50 zebrafish (Danio rerio) in the tank‚ schooling was no surprise‚ but the cameras allowed the team to capture this in movements computers can analyze. Sometimes the fish formed a circle‚ at other times they moved in the same direction‚ either lining up or side-by-side. It makes sense the fish have developed a few methods of co-swimming‚ as being too predictable would be a gift to predators. The team found that groups of four and even three zebrafish display the same coordination as a school of fifty‚ but two fish alone in a tank do not. Three fish swim side-by-side‚ whereas‚ with two‚ one follows the other. The path of three zebrafish shows they behave similarly as a trio as they do within a larger school.Image Credit: University of Bristol / Yushi YangThe team also investigated the behavior of small fish sub-populations within a larger group‚ marking them so the cameras picked up their movements specifically. Three marked fish within a school showed similar movements to three alone in the tank. However‚ when two were marked‚ their behavior in the school looked nothing like two with the tank to themselves. “This indicates that fish interact predominantly with their nearest neighbors‚ perceiving the rest of the group as a fluctuating background‚” the researchers write.Dr Alexandra Zampetaki of Heinrich Heine University‚ Düsseldorf‚ said in a statement: "Practically‚ three fish form a school‚ but two are not enough." Or as Dr Seuss might have said: “One fish‚ two fish‚ red fish… school’s in.”Zebrafish are a model animal for zoologists because they are small‚ produce lots of embryos‚ and are easy to genetically modify. Senior author Professor C. Patrick Royall of the University of Bristol acknowledged not all fish may have the same minimum‚ and suggested goldfish and sardines should be studied as well.Transferring the techniques to flying animals could be more difficult‚ but Royall hopes the work can be done in the air as well‚ including “flocks of birds such as starling murmurations and swarms of insects such as dancing mosquitos." If a common pattern is found‚ it could reveal something profound about social animals. If not‚ differences between species could prove significant. Already‚ the team have noticed the zebrafish group movements resemble those of midges‚ but not starlings where one bird’s change can propagate through the flock. The most ambitious project is to study human behavior at mass gatherings. "We will see whether the simple limit of the number three then also applies‚” co-author Professor Hartmut Löwen said. Such information could prove useful in preventing stampedes that cause fatal crowd crushes. If you’ve ever seen three suspicious characters moving together and thought something was fishy‚ you may just be right. The study is open access in Nature Communications.

Mapping the Unseen: New Study of UFO Sightings Across America

In a recent study‚ researchers compiled a map delineating the regions of the country where UFO sightings are most frequently reported. Researchers from the University of Utah have embarked on a quest to understand the correlation between environmental variables and the frequency of reported UFO encounters. By meticulously examining nearly 100‚000 documented sightings reported to the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) over two decades‚ they have crafted a detailed map pinpointing regions with heightened UFO activity. Credit: Medina‚ Brewer et al. Scientific Reports 2023 Their findings reveal a striking concentration of sightings in the western United States‚ outpacing all other regions save for a notable area in the northeast. This western predilection for UFO reports may be attributed to a rich tapestry of cultural and historical ties to unexplained aerial phenomena‚ including the infamous Area 51 in Nevada‚ the legendary Roswell incident in New Mexico‚ and Utah’s own enigmatic Skinwalker Ranch. The region’s vibrant outdoor culture‚ which encourages year-round recreation on public lands‚ also contributes to a populace that frequently gazes upward‚ potentially increasing the likelihood of sighting something unusual. Richard Medina‚ a geographer at the University of Utah‚ emphasizes the region’s unique connection to Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP)‚ bolstered by a history of military testing grounds such as the US Army Dugway Proving Ground. It is crucial to note‚ however‚ that the study’s intent was not to substantiate extraterrestrial visitations but rather to analyze ordinary factors that might affect the number of sightings. Whether these sightings are of otherworldly visitors or merely misunderstood terrestrial occurrences‚ the study sheds light on where one might look to the skies in hopes of witnessing the unexplained. 'Taking Down Trump' Author Wails on MSNBC After Trump Bond Reduced to $175 Million

Monday was a tough day for liberals. In the wave of wailings over a New York appeals court ruling that reduced Donald Trump's bond from $454 million to $175 million‚ few were more plaintive than the meltdown emanating from the author of Taking Down Trump. Tristan Snell is a former assistant Attorney General of New York and MSNBC analyst. It was so bad that it seemed as if another type of analyst would be needed to get him over the emotional toll the appeals court decision handed him. Contrast the wailing Snell on MSNBC below to the smug‚ smirking Snell who back in January was already gloating in anticipation over the financial strain that Judge Arthur Engoron imposed upon Trump in the infamous victimless fraud trial.   MSNBC guest has an on air meltdown over Trump’s bond being reduced. Can you imagine election night if Trump wins? I’m giddy just thinking about how amazing it will be: pic.twitter.com/YbSRY8Xpyl — Clay Travis (@ClayTravis) March 25‚ 2024 Honestly‚ this is so infuriating I don’t even know what to do. I don’t even know if I care what the process is that these judges are arriving at. Whatever it is‚ it’s flawed. I can tell you that much. David put it well. This is a different process for this person. We have decided that he gets his own private court of justice. He has a private plane. He has private clubs that he lives in. He basically has fashioned himself his own private militia to try to take over the Capitol. Now he’s getting his own private system of justice. This is an absolute travesty. His own private system of justice? Snell somehow can't see an entire justice system politically weaponized against Trump with multiple trials in order to use lawfare‚ rather than the ballot box‚ to keep him from returning to the White House. Snell followed up his MSNBC meltdown with a flurry of entertaining X (which everybody will forever still call "Twitter") meltdowns:   There’s a good chance that $175 million is still too much for Trump to come up with He probably doesn’t have the cash (despite what he says) — and he’s too much of a credit risk for that big of a bond Watch him ask for more time or for the amount to be lowered even more — Tristan Snell (@TristanSnell) March 25‚ 2024   We should just build Trump his own courthouse now — a cupcake court. Shaped like a giant orange cupcake. Filled with his own cupcake judges handing down cupcake decisions since His Cupcakeness is apparently already above the law. — Tristan Snell (@TristanSnell) March 25‚ 2024   BREAKING: NY’s justice system Appellate judges hand Trump a gift‚ cut bond down to $175 million‚ give him 10 extra days Imagine a basketball team down by 40 points‚ and with 1:00 left in the game‚ refs give the losing team 5 more minutes — and lower the hoop from 10ft to 6ft — Tristan Snell (@TristanSnell) March 25‚ 2024   Donald Trump has a private jet. Donald Trump lives in private clubs. Donald Trump assembled a private militia to attack the Capitol. Now he gets his own private system of justice — available to him alone. NO ONE ELSE would get the special treatment he gets. NO ONE should. — Tristan Snell (@TristanSnell) March 25‚ 2024 Perhaps poor Tristan Snell should change the title of his book to "Taken Down By Trump."

Dragon’s Dogma 2 romance explained

Can you romance a character in Dragon’s Dogma 2? DD2 plays pretty loosey-goosey with its NPCs; as far as videogames go‚ they’re well-rounded individuals who have schedules‚ their own needs‚ and whenever our Arisen is nearby‚ short life expectancies. You can connect with them on a deeper level‚ though‚ if that’s what you want‚ which is where romance comes in. The cast of Dragon’s Dogma 2 characters is varied‚ to say the least‚ and‚ as it turns out‚ you’re able to gain the affection of pretty much anyone in the RPG game so long as you have what they desire. Part of becoming an Arisen is having your heart taken‚ and with Dragon’s Dogma 2 romance‚ you can turn the tides and steal someone else’s. Cities Skylines 2 mods and DLC are not going well so far

Cities Skylines 2 mods are supposed to be the savior of the beleaguered city building sequel. After a troubled launch in October‚ marked by performance problems‚ Colossal Order and Paradox’s municipal opus is due to begin its comeback arc - we’re all awaiting a Cyberpunk 2077-style tale of redemption. But as official support for CS2 mods finally arrives‚ alongside the first Cities Skylines 2 DLC‚ it seems the strategy game’s woes are not yet over‚ as players complain of new technical issues and a variety of fresh negative responses land on the Cities Skylines 2 Steam page. I love the original Cities Skylines. The sequel has the potential to be the best city builder ever. For now‚ though‚ it seems there is more trouble ahead.
