Billy Joel’s Best Song On Each Of His Albums

Billy Joel’s Best Song On Each Of His Albums list presents a fun run through of one of the most loved single artists ever. How many rock artists do you know have not released an album in over 30 years, yet still continue to sell our concerts worldwide? It was nice to have him them back briefly a few months ago when he released his first new pop single he had in a very long time. Hopefully, it will finally lead to a new album. Of course, that’s up to the man who said he’s not going to do it The post Billy Joel’s Best Song On Each Of His Albums appeared first on ClassicRockHistory.com.

Pluto’s Heart Hides An Ocean As Dense As Utah’s Salt Lake

A new mathematical model provides insights into what may lie under the icy surface of the most famous dwarf planet: Pluto. Sputnik Planitia, the scientific name of its heart, looks dramatically different from the rest of the distant world. New modeling suggests what is likely to lie beneath it, and its properties. When New Horizons flew past Pluto in July 2015, it took many pictures of the surface of the former planet. By looking at the cracks and bumps of Sputnik Planitia, researchers created a model of what the buried ocean is likely to be like. They think that beneath the nitrogen ice surface, there is a shell of water ice 40 to 80 kilometers (25 to 50 miles) thick. This blanket of ice keeps the ocean from freezing over. The team also estimates that the salinity of the ocean is at most 8 percent above that of the ocean seawater on Earth. That’s similar to the density of Utah’s Great Salt Lake. The modeling needs to take into account the many uncertainties we have about Pluto. But if the ocean were less dense, the ice shell would collapse, so there would be a lot more fractures visible in the ice. Equally, if the ocean were denser, the ice would show fewer cracks."We estimated a sort of Goldilocks zone where the density and shell thickness is just right," author Alex Nguyen, from Washington University in St. Louis, said in a statement. Before New Horizons got to Pluto, the idea of an ocean buried beneath Pluto seemed impossible. The dwarf planet is not big enough to have kept much heat from its formation. It is too far away from the Sun."Pluto is a small body," added Nguyen. “It should have lost almost all of its heat shortly after it was formed, so basic calculations would suggest that it's frozen solid to its core."A major collision billions of years ago created the ocean, and the gravitational dance between Pluto and its moon Charon might help keep it that way – but not alone. Chemical compositions, as well as the geological suggestions presented in this work, all come into play to explain how such an ocean can survive for so long on such a frigid world.  The study is published in the journal Icarus.

Mars's Doomed Moon Phobos Might Not Be What We Thought

Mars's Doomed Moon Phobos Might Not Be What We Thought

A team of researchers analyzing previously unpublished images of Mars's moon Phobos have found hints that the unusual moon is not what we once thought.Mars's moons Phobos and Deimos are a little different from the other moons of the solar system. While not as strange as the Earth's possible "ghost moon" (aka a Kordylewski cloud), the moons are tiny in comparison to their host planet, are covered in craters, and are surprisingly low-density. Phobos is sometimes called a "doomed moon", as it is set to potentially crash into Mars.As well as this, close-up images of the moons show Phobos has peculiar 1-kilometer (0.6-mile) long grooves running across its surface, as well as being covered in loose regolith (rock and dust). There are a few theories about how these moons formed, though there are a few problems with both. According to one idea, the moons were created when a large object collided with Mars, creating a debris disk around Mars that slowly coalesced into the objects. Another suggests that the Moons are captured D-type asteroids, usually found in the outer asteroid belt, or with Jupiter's trojan asteroids. While the asteroid hypothesis might explain their apparent composition, it isn't so great at explaining their almost circular orbit. Meanwhile, the debris disk hypothesis might explain the circular orbit, but doesn't account well for the moons' composition. We may soon have answers – or at least better data from which to draw conclusions – with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission launching in 2026, and aiming to return samples of Phobos to Earth after three years of observations. However, ahead of the mission, researchers from France and Germany came across previously unpublished photos of Phobos taken by the European Space Agency's (ESA) Mars Express spacecraft and found that the moon has properties that don't fit either hypothesis. Analyzing the photographs, the team found that the moon does not reflect light uniformly, but appears brighter when the Sun is directly overhead, something which is seen in comets."Overall, our photometric analysis has shown that Phobos photometric properties show a close resemblance to those of comet 67P: both have a red spectrum, a high surface porosity, and similar opposition effect values," the team wrote in their study, adding that the moon could be a bilobated comet (i.e. comets with two distinct lobes) or a binary comet (composed of two bodies that have come together through gravitation)."When comparing the phase integral and geometric albedo of Phobos with those of other dark Solar System bodies, it appears once more that Phobos has photometric properties similar to those of Jupiter family comets, which originate from the Kuiper belt," the team added. "Phobos’ phase integral is also very close to that of Phoebe, which is supposed to be a Kuiper belt object captured by Saturn. Additionally, we also found that the opposition effect of Phobos is very similar in shape and parameters to the one of comet 67P, and it has a similar high surface porosity."It's a cool hypothesis, as thus far we have not discovered any comet moons, making Phobos a potential first. Thanks to the upcoming JAXA mission, we won't have too long to wait before we can find out.The study is accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics and is posted to pre-print server arXiv.

Kīlauea Reveals A New “Stomp Rocket” Type Of Volcanic Eruption

Kīlauea Reveals A New “Stomp Rocket” Type Of Volcanic Eruption

In May 2018, Kīlauea volcano in Hawai'i erupted repeatedly in quick succession, driving ash more than 9,000 meters (30,000 feet) into the sky. Although the damage to the towns below swallowed by lava looked tragically familiar, the eruptions had features so unusual that volcanologists have been studying them for six years, eventually identifying a new cause to explain them. When the eruption of the Halema’uma’u crater first occurred, it was compared to the same volcano’s 1924 eruption. It was a joy to study, from the production of pyrocumulus clouds to blue fire caused by escaping methane gas. We even got some brief new islands.Explosive volcanic eruptions are usually attributed to either magma fragmenting during decompression or vaporized groundwater. Often, it’s a little from column A, a little from column B, to the extent that volcanologists place eruptions on a phreatic-magmatic spectrum for how much each contributed. However, Dr Josh Crozier, who explored the Kīlauea event for his PhD at the University of Oregon, said in a statement: “These eruptions are quite interesting in that they don’t really seem to involve either of those. The eruptive material contained very little that looked like fresh magma that was blasted out, but there’s no evidence for significant groundwater being involved, either.”The eruption as seen from a (possibly) safe distance.Image Credit: United States Geological SurveyAt another volcano, the mystery might have remained, but Kīlauea is covered with sensors. Moreover, there were plenty of opportunities to watch the event repeat, since while they differed from other eruptions, the 12 explosions in 10 days were consistent with each other. “This remarkably repeatable sequence is among the best recorded explosive eruptions in the world,” Crozier and co-authors write. The lava flows that caused so much damage came from magma draining from an underground reservoir 40 kilometers (25 miles) away. Crozier and colleagues concluded that the falling magma caused a series of earthquakes above, bringing crustal material down and increasing pressure in the reservoir. The quakes had an average magnitude of 4.7, so these were not small events.Besides the depleted magma, the reservoir contained magmatic gas and rubble, which the pressure increase blasted through a vent into the crater above. The researchers call this the “stomp-rocket” effect, after the toy launched by stepping hard on an air bag.“The ‘stomp’ is this whole kilometer-thick chunk of rock dropping down, pressurizing the pocket, and then forcing material directly up,” Crozier said. The tube in this case a 600-meter (2,000-foot) conduit to the surface and the rocket around 3,000 cubic meters (106,000 cubic feet) of particles, around the volume of an Olympic swimming pool, released every second.Proving the stomp-rocket effect was responsible may be impossible at this point, but Crozier and co-authors performed modeling they say shows the explanation is plausible.A tip for anyone thinking of building their house on a volcano; calderas collapse a lot. The circumstances will not always be right for stomp-rocketing, but it’s probably happened many times without volcanologists having the information to detect it. Indeed, based on the limited data from the 1924 eruption of the same volcano, the authors think the same mechanism could have been responsible, although with eruptions following collapse earthquakes elsewhere. The combination of extensive monitoring and the repeated event allowed volcanologists to link the properties of the plume the eruption produces with the geophysical observations. “This link is very rare,” said Professor Joe Dufek. “It points to new ways for us to observe eruptions and to combine sensor measurements with computer simulations to better assess hazards from eruptions.”The study is published in Nature Geoscience.

Are Bose speakers and headphones still the best in 2024?

Of all the popular premium audio brands out there, Bose has been front of mind the longest. The company first made a name for itself in the premium audio market with tiny little bookshelf speakers that packed shockingly big sound. Then QuietComfort noise cancelling headphones came along and instantly became the gold standard for ANC headphones. In 2024, Bose has more competition than ever before. Brands like Sony, Apple, Sonos, Bowers & Wilkins, and more offer headphones and speakers that are often just as impressive as comparable options from Bose. But when you consider both speakers, headphones, and earbuds — the trifecta of personal audio — Bose is arguably still the best brand out there, all things considered. If you want to see for yourself, now is the perfect time to find out because Bose's best sellers from all three categories are currently discounted. Bose TV Speaker - Soundbar for TV with Bluetooth and HDMI-ARC Connectivity, Black, Includes Rem… Price: $199 (reg. $279) You Save: $80.00 (29%) Buy Now Bose QuietComfort Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones, Bluetooth Over Ear Headphones with Up T… Price: $249 (reg. $349) You Save: $100.00 (29%) Buy Now Bose QuietComfort Ultra Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones with Spatial Audio, Over-the-Ear H… Price: $379 (reg. $429) You Save: $50.00 (12%) Buy Now Bose QuietComfort Ultra Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds, Bluetooth Noise Cancelling Earbuds w… Price: $249 (reg. $299) You Save: $50.00 (17%) Buy Now Prices start at just $99.95 for the renewed Bose SoundLink Micro speaker, which typically sells for $119. Bose soundbars are on sale too, including the newest Bose TV speaker for $199 instead of $279. And on top of that, ANC headphones start at $249 instead of $349 for Bose QuietComfort headphones, or $379 instead of $429 for top-of-the-line QuietComfort Ultra headphones. And if you want QuietComfort Ultra ANC earbuds, they're at an all-time low price of $249 right now. I'm a big fan of Bose speakers and headphones, and BGR's readers are too. In fact, Bose is the second most popular headphones brand among our readers, behind Apple. Of course, BGR's guide on the best AirPods deals helps explain why AirPods are so popular with our audience. Like Apple, Bose's personal audio products are definitely on the pricey side. That's why they're so popular when they go on sale, and we have a phenomenal sale to share with you right now. Starting with Bose speaker deals, the Bose SoundLink Micro Bluetooth speaker is easily one of the company's best-selling models. It packs surprisingly impressive sound into a very compact speaker. Plus, you get IP67 dust and water resistance as well as up to 6 hours of playback on a charge. At $119, this model is definitely a great value. Right now at Amazon, however, it's on sale for just $99.95 if you get one in renewed condition. It comes with Amazon's renewed guarantee, so you can return it for a full refund within 90 days if you're not happy with it. If you want something way more robust, the Bose SoundLink Revolve+ Series II speaker with 360-degree sound is down to $249. This is easily my favorite 360-degree portable speaker thanks to the full, rich sound it pumps out. This is always one of the most popular Bose speaker deals because this model can listen for voice commands using smart assistants like Alexa. Bose Portable Smart Speaker — Wireless Bluetooth Speaker with Alexa Voice Control Built-In, Bla… Price: $349 (reg. $399) You Save: $50.00 (13%) Buy Now If you're looking for Bose speaker deals on soundbars instead, you're in luck. There are two different Bose soundbar deals in the current sale. The hottest deal is on the new and improved Bose TV Soundbar, which is on sale for $199. This model is upgraded in so many ways, and it's $80 off right now. That's the best deal I've seen in months for this model. Bose TV Speaker - Soundbar for TV with Bluetooth and HDMI-ARC Connectivity, Black, Includes Rem… Price: $199.00 You Save: $80.00 (29%) Buy Now Also on sale is the Bose 600 soundbar, which is down to $399 instead of $499. This model is definitely in a different league compared to the other two. It features five different drivers and delivers phenomenal sound quality. The Bose 600 soundbar is fantastic for movies, TV shows, or gaming on your PS5 or whatever other consoles you might have. Or, if you want the best of the best, the Bose Ultra soundbar is on sale for $799 instead of $899. That's a huge $300 discount, which works out to 33% off the retail price. Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar With Dolby Atmos Plus Alexa and Google Voice Control, Surround Sound… Price: $799.00 You Save: $100.00 (11%) Buy Now Finally, in addition to all those great Bose speaker deals, there are several popular Bose headphones models that are also on sale. First and foremost, Bose QuietComfort wireless noise cancelling headphones have a $100 discount that slashes them to $249. These are the headphones you think of when you think of Bose ANC headphones, and they're still among the best in the business. The upgraded Ultra headphones model is on sale for $329, while Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds are down to $249.
