Majority of Americans Think US Economy Is in Recession and Shrinking, Poll Finds

A majority of Americans believe that the U.S. is currently in a recession, blaming the Biden administration for harsh economic conditions, according to research firm The Harris Poll. Around 56% of people surveyed thought that the U.S. economy was in recession, and 55% thought that the economy was shrinking, according to a poll conducted for The Guardian. U.S. gross domestic product rose just 1.6% in the first quarter of 2024, down substantially from the 3.4% and 4.9% growth rates seen in the fourth and third quarters of 2023, respectively. “What Americans are saying in this data is: ‘Economists may say things are getting better, but we’re not feeling it where I live,’” John Gerzema, CEO of the Harris Poll, told The Guardian. “Unwinding four years of uncertainty takes time. Leaders have to understand this and bring the public along.” Nearly three-fifths of those polled blamed mismanagement from the Biden administration for the current poor state of the economy, and around 72% think that inflation is increasing, according to the survey. The rate of inflation decreased slightly to 3.4% in April from 3.5% in the previous month, far higher than the Federal Reserve’s target of 2%. Prices have risen a total of 19.3% since Biden first took office in January 2021. According to the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, job growth in '23 was 1.5%, not the 2.0% previously published by BLS – that means the monthly job reports overestimated nonfarm payroll growth by over 770k last year, and that's on top of the downward revisions… pic.twitter.com/hxeCpqF7NG— E.J. Antoni, Ph.D. (@RealEJAntoni) May 23, 2024 Around 49% of those surveyed responded that they thought unemployment was at a 50-year high even though the official rate remains below 4%, according to the poll. Despite the low unemployment rate, job gains over the past year have been propelled by additions in government employment, part-time positions and foreign-born populations, boosting employment counts. President Joe Biden has sought to deflect blame for rising inflation away from his administration, arguing that it is actually corporate greed that is hiking prices. The Federal Reserve Board of San Francisco disproved that claim by pointing out that corporate markups are not greater than during other economic recoveries where huge surges of inflation were not present. Many economists point to huge levels of government deficit spending for the persistent inflation that has tainted Americans’ views of the economy. Under Biden, the national debt has risen to nearly $34.6 trillion, according to the Treasury Department. The poll collected responses from 2,119 adults between May 10 and 12. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation. Joy Reid Smears Justice Alito as Flag-Flying “Lawless Individual”

Joy Reid Smears Justice Alito as Flag-Flying “Lawless Individual”

Joy Reid, host of MSNBC’s The ReidOut, seized the opportunity to smear Justice Samuel Alito for flying what The New York Times classified as a “provocative flag” at his vacation home in New Jersey. At the end of her Wednesday conversation with Maya Wiley, a New York lawyer, and Tim Miller, self-proclaimed Never Trumper, Reid came to the ludicrous conclusion that Alito was a “lawless individual.” The flag in question was “An Appeal to Heaven” flag, whose origins date back to before the Revolutionary War. The New York Times re-branded the historic flag as “a symbol of support for former President Donald Trump, for a religious strand of the 'Stop the Steal' campaign and for a push to remake the government in Christian terms.” In fact, the flag serves as a reminder of the fundamental principles of justice and a relentless pursuit of liberty, on which the United States was founded and built. To Reid, however, the flag meant nothing more than a “Christian nationalist pro-Trump flag” representative of rabid insurrectionists. Ironically enough and perhaps unbeknownst to Reid, the flag was actually featured on Ron Swanson’s desk in NBC’s very own “Parks and Recreation.”     Reid then turned to Wiley, who took her turn with besmirching Alito and his opinion in the Dobbs case, which overturned Roe v. Wade, outrageously opining that it reversed a “fundamental right in our country's history.” She further asserted that the decision reflected what “fundamentally was about a Christian position as opposed to a Constitutional position,” as if the Constitution was not authored by Founding Fathers whose beliefs and reasoning inherently aligned with Christian truths, despite the fact that not all were Christians themselves. Abortion was never a fundamental right in United States’ history.  Wiley used these examples to denounce Justices like Alito and Clarence Thomas for their apparent bias and argued they must be required to recuse themselves: “If we want to preserve the rule of law one of the things that it must include is that Justice Alito, or Justice Thomas, or any other one of these justices who have demonstrated that they either are biased, are bought, or or simply not concerned with the appearance, the very appearance of ethical violations must be required to recuse themselves. Must be!” MSNBC’s host readily agreed with her, summing up the argument with an absolute banger of a derogatory line to characterize Alito: “He is a lawless individual, a clear Christian nationalist and now a dual insurrection flag flier.” Does Reid know that a flag flown far more frequently than these flags of “insurrection” is the American flag? Will the country’s flag eventually be considered an insurrectionist flag too? It's become associated enough with Trump fans that it triggered MSNBC analyst Mara Gay as a "disturbing" event when pro-Trump trucks flew the red, white, and blue. The transcript is below. Click "expand" to read: MSNBC’s The ReidOut 5/22/2024 07:14:52 PM ET JOY REID: And I'm sure all of you have at this point if you have a phone heard this new New York Times headline, “Another Provocative Flag” -interesting word- “Was Flown at Another Alito Home.” And here is The New York Times text: “Another provocative symbol was displayed at the vacation home of Samuel Alito and his wife, Martha-Ann, in New Jersey, according to interviews and photographs.” “It was an Appeal to Heaven flag, which like the inverted U.S. flag was carried by rioters at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021. Also flown as the Pine Tree flag, it dates back to the Revolutionary War but largely fell into obscurity until recent years and is now a symbol of support for former President Donald Trump, for a religious strand of the ‘Stop the Steal’ campaign and for a push to remake the government in Christian terms.” I'm gonna let both of you comment on that. These are new photographs by The New York Times, Maya. So, now he's flying a Christian nationalist, pro-Trump flag as well. MAYA WILEY: Wonder if he's blaming that on his wife. REID: Martha-Ann is responsible for it all, apparently. WILEY: Apparently women are responsible for everything. REID: Yes. WILEY: And so, and let's go back to one of the things that we know Justice Alito penned, which is the first-ever reversal of a fundamental right in our country's history, when he penned the opinion that reversed Roe v. Wade, which really fundamentally was about a Christian position as opposed to a Constitutional position.  REID: Correct. Yes. WILEY: And I just think -- we have to be honest about ourselves in this country that if we want to preserve the rule of law one of the things that it must include is that Justice Alito, or Justice Thomas, or any other one of these justices who have demonstrated that they either are biased, are bought, or or simply not concerned with the appearance, the very appearance of ethical violations must be required to recuse themselves. Must be. REID: Any yet, they cannot be required, Tim. He is a lawless individual, a clear Christian nationalist and now a dual insurrection flag flier.

$85M ICE detention center remains mostly empty on taxpayers’ dime: Contractors, nonprofits ‘are the ones benefitting’

United States Customs and Immigration Enforcement recently extended its funding for a facility in California that functions as a detention center for illegal immigrants, according to the building’s owner.Earlier this week, the GEO Group, a security company, reported that the federal government will continue to fund its 1,940-bed Adelanto ICE Processing Center. Due to a COVID-era court order, the center has remained mostly empty since 2020.ICE will continue to use taxpayer dollars to keep the facility running at least through September 30, 2024.'Deeply troubling waste of taxpayer resources.'Despite California recently becoming one of the most trafficked southern border crossings, ICE is unable to fully utilize the $85 million-per-year detention center. While ICE funds space for 640 detainees, only a handful are currently being held at the facility, the New York Post reported. In 2019, ICE entered into a 15-year contract with the GEO Group to run the facility. Shortly after the agreement was established, a judge issued a court order blocking the detention center from bringing in additional detainees in response to a lawsuit regarding the spread of COVID. As a result, the facility has been forced to continue to follow social distancing rules despite the expiration of the outdated guidelines.According to KCAL-TV, in 2020, 81 of the 784 detainees at the detention center tested positive for COVID-19. United States District Judge Terry Hatter responded by requiring ICE to reduce the number of detainees in its facility.ICE sources revealed to the Post that the agency is forced to fly illegal immigrants to other facilities.“We have to fly people out of state for housing,” one source told the news outlet, noting that contractors and nonprofits “are the ones benefitting from this, while the taxpayers keep paying the bill.”Another ICE source told the Post, “That’s taxpayer money, are you f**king kidding me?” Jenny Burke, an ICE spokesperson, told the news outlet that the contract was extended to September to allow the agency “to realize potential relief from ongoing litigation that prevents full use of the facility.”In October, U.S. Representative Jay Obernolte (R) sent a letter to ICE expressing his “strong support for fully utilizing” the processing center.“I am deeply concerned about recent media reports that ICE is releasing illegal immigrants into communities across the U.S. using the justification of limited space in detention facilities,” he wrote. “I am particularly baffled by this situation because the Adelanto ICE Processing Center was specifically designed to house individuals in immigration detention for ICE and currently has the available capacity to house 1,932 additional detainees.”“Even more perplexing is the fact that the COVID-19 national emergency, the primary justification used to limit the intake of new detainees at the Adelanto facility, was declared ended by President Joe Biden on May 11, 2023,” Obernolte added. He called it “an unconscionable and deeply troubling waste of taxpayer resources.” — (@) Like Blaze News? How has Tulsi gone from Bernie supporter to possible Trump VP pick?

In 2016, the last place former Democratic congresswoman and presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard thought she would be now is addressing rumors that she might be Donald Trump’s pick for vice president. But Gabbard, who shockingly supported Bernie Sanders in 2016, is now in that very spot. “I’m not going to ask you anything other than have you had a conversation with him about being vice president,” Glenn Beck asks, curious. “I’ve spoken to him. I won’t talk about what we spoke about,” Gabbard tells Glenn, adding that she “would serve” in a Trump administration if it was in a capacity she felt she “could actually be effective in helping to get our country back.” “Can you help me out on understanding the Bernie Sanders to, you know, ‘I’d be willing to serve in a Trump administration?’” Glenn asks. “I’m glad you asked,” Gabbard says, “because it is, on its face, kind of a big mental leap. But when you actually look at the reason when I made that announcement back in 2016 to resign as vice chair of the DNC, so that I could get involved in that Democratic presidential primary, I focused on one thing.” Though Gabbard admits Sanders has changed a lot since she supported him, she stands by the reason she used to support him. “I announced my endorsement of Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton around foreign policy,” she says. "There was a very clear contrast between Hillary Clinton, the queen of warmongers and Bernie Sanders, who has for a long time largely been more of a non-interventionist.” “As an American citizen, as a soldier, and a veteran of various wars and conflicts, I felt strongly about the fact that Hillary Clinton would be the most dangerous president and commander in chief for our country, our freedom, our security, and our liberty.” Want more from Glenn Beck?To enjoy more of Glenn’s masterful storytelling, thought-provoking analysis, and uncanny ability to make sense of the chaos, subscribe to BlazeTV — the largest multi-platform network of voices who love America, defend the Constitution, and live the American dream.

Charles Barkley blasts 'petty' women 'hatin' on Caitlin Clark' after new WNBA star 'gettin' y'all a** private charters'

NBA legend and broadcasting king Charles Barkley chastised "petty" women who he says are "hatin' on Caitlin Clark" after the new WNBA player's marketing power has infused the league with a ton more money — even to the tune of "gettin' y'all ass private charters."Outkick said Barkley's rant on Wednesday echoed strong words of support for Clark from NBA superstar LeBron James: "The one thing that I love that she's bringing to her sport? More people want to watch. More people want to tune in. Don't get it twisted. Don't get it f***ed up. Caitlin Clark is the reason why a lot of great things are going to happen for the WNBA. But for her individually, I don't think she should get involved on nothing that's being said. Just go have fun. Enjoy. I'm rooting for Caitlin because I've been in that seat before. I've walked that road before. I hope she kills."'Indeed, the Indiana Fever's number-one draft pick has been drawing huge crowds wherever she plays, resulting in a near 250% increase in WNBA ticket prices.'Barkley could not have agreed more, airing his sentiments amid laughter from fellow commentators on TNT Sports. Here's his hilarious rant:"You women out there, y'all petty, man! Hey, LeBron, you are 100% right on these girls hatin' on Caitlin Clark. Y'all petty girls! I expect men to be petty 'cause we're the most insecure group in the world. Y'all should be thanking that girl for gettin' y'all ass private charters, all the money and visibility she's bringing to the WNBA. Don't be petty like dudes!"Barkley added that others instead should be giving Clark "her flowers" due to her accomplishments.Indeed, the Indiana Fever's number-one draft pick has been drawing huge crowds wherever she plays, resulting in a near 250% increase in WNBA ticket prices. Outkick added that the league even granted charter flights — which is what Barkley referenced in his rant — due to rosy financial prospects over Clark's popularity. What have others been saying?WNBA player A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces said Clark is more "marketable" because she's white, telling the Associated Press that race is "a huge thing. I think a lot of people may say it’s not about black and white, but to me, it is. It really is because you can be top notch at what you are as a black woman, but yet maybe that’s something that people don't want to see."Outspoken sports pundit Jemele Hill told the Los Angeles Times that “we would all be very naive if we didn’t say race and her sexuality played a role in her popularity. While so many people are happy for Caitlin’s success — including the players; this has had such an enormous impact on the game — there is a part of it that is a little problematic because of what it says about the worth and the marketability of the players who are already there.”Like Blaze News? Kamala Harris proves she has no idea how inflation works

While average Americans are aware that government spending and the resulting inflation is out of control and hindering their ability to buy homes, groceries, and even McDonald’s — Kamala Harris remains blissfully unaware. In a recent clip of her describing the Inflation Reduction Act, she makes this crystal clear. “The president and I, because of the Inflation Reduction Act, the Infrastructure Act, we are dropping trillions of dollars on the streets of America right now to build back up our roads and our bridges, our sidewalks, to invest in a clean energy economy, to deal with the climate crisis in a way that is about building up adaptation and resilience,” Harris ranted. “We now have proposed that if you are the child of parents who, or you were raised in a family where the folks who raised you were not homeowners, when you go buy a home, you will be entitled to a $225,000 grant toward a down payment for a home,” she added. Dave Rubin of "The Rubin Report" has come to expect this from Harris, but it doesn’t make it any more comforting. “She was hired because she is black and a woman. She was polling at zero in her own party when they took her on for the job that she’s not qualified for,” he explains. “She’s dropping trillions of dollars on the streets via something called the Inflation Reduction Act, and then you wonder why things cost more.” Want more from Dave Rubin? To enjoy more honest conversations, free speech, and big ideas with Dave Rubin, subscribe to BlazeTV — the largest multi-platform network of voices who love America, defend the Constitution, and live the American dream.
