WATCH: Video Released That Shows What Led To Scottie Scheffler Arrest

The Kentucky police detective who arrested the world’s No. 1 ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler last week violated his department’s policies by failing to turn on his bodycam during the incident, officials said this week. Louisville Police Department Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said at a press conference that any disciplinary action against Detective Bryan Gillis would be “in line with our disciplinary protocol and practices.” “Detective Gillis should have turned on his body-worn camera but did not,” the chief told reporters on Thursday. “His failure to do so is a violation of LMPD police on uniforms and equipment.” Dashcam footage from one of the police cars shows Scheffler’s vehicle slowly turning into the Valhalla Golf Club ahead of second round of the PGA Championship last Friday morning. Video footage that was taken from across the street showed that the police officer ran after the vehicle and appeared to throw himself onto the vehicle, at which point Scheffler, who was already driving slowly, brought the vehicle to an immediate stop. The arresting officer claimed that Scheffler “refused to comply and accelerated forward,” dragging him to the ground — which is not seen anywhere in the video. Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic, according to a court document. The second-degree assault charge is a felony, while the others are misdemeanors. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP “Our position remains the same as it was last Friday,” the golfer’s attorney Steve Romines said in a statement. “I am not negotiating as we have no interest in settling. I am preparing to litigate as needed and the case will be dismissed or we will go to trial because Scottie did absolutely nothing wrong.” Mayor Craig Greenberg said that a shuttle bus that struck and killed a resident shortly before the incident “led to a series of very unfortunate events in dark, rainy and tense conditions.” WATCH: BREAKING: @LMPD releases the only official video we have of the incident involving PGA Golfer Scottie Scheffler. Who Is Running Congress?

Who Is Running Congress?

Reflect on the words of Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., in his Washington Post article titled “Why Is Congress So Dumb?” Thereby hangs a tale of congressional anemia and languor. The veteran congressman laments, “our available resources and our policy staff, the brains of Congress, have been so depleted that we can’t do our jobs properly. … Congress is increasingly unable to comprehend a world growing more socially, economically and technologically multifaceted—and we did this to ourselves.” While the size of the federal government was mushrooming, staff levels in House member offices ticked down from 6,556 in 1977 to 6,329 in 2021. Congress’ annual budget is $5.3 billion, a tiny fraction of the $1.5 trillion spent on the military-industrial-security complex. And only 10% of the $5.3 billion is spent on human capital as opposed to buildings, the Capitol Police, and maintenance. “For every $3,000 the United States spends per American on government programs,” Pascrell writes, “[Congress] allocates only $6 to oversee them.” The congressman’s diagnosis is spot-on. It deserves further amplification. Congress is largely run by rookies paid miserly wages who then move on after a few years to lucrative lobbying on K Street as a financial necessity. Congress is starved of institutional memory and expertise. Members and staff are constitutionally clueless, political tyros. The executive branch runs circles around them, stiff-arms oversight, and typically originates major legislation for Congress to entertain. Congressional staff commonly parachute into high-level, well-paid executive branch positions. The reverse—executive branch talent coming to work for Congress—is as rare as unicorns. This is a disaster for Congress as a coequal branch of government and for the Constitution’s separation of powers. It is also a break in history, tracing back to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., who in 1995 seized the lion’s share of legislative powers from committees and member offices by shrinking their budgets and prerogatives and enfeebling their intellectual infrastructures. Gingrich also defunded the Office of Technology Assessment, tantamount to a congressional lobotomy. His objective was to handcuff any challenges by members or committees to his personal policy predilections and compromises with the White House. None of Gingrich’s Republican and Democratic successors—Dennis Hastert, Nancy Pelosi, John Boehner, Paul Ryan, Kevin McCarthy, and Mike Johnson—have undone his dumbing down of Congress. The typical chief of staff or chief counsel in the House is a recent university or law school graduate in their mid-20s hired primarily because of their loyalty and campaign work. They are awed by the White House and ignorant of the vast powers the Constitution entrusts to the legislative branch: the war power, the power of the purse, the power to supersede treaties or executive orders, and the inherent power of contempt to sanction summarily any executive official for withholding documents or testimony from Congress. The result, among other things, is secret government and a reliance on whistleblowers, who commonly have ulterior motives, to disclose executive branch crimes or wrongdoing in lieu of Congress. In the pre-Gingrich era, the Watergate crimes were exposed by the Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities, and the Church Committee disclosed the crimes and wrongdoing of the intelligence community. In the post-Gingrich era, Congress goes on its hands and knees, like Henry IV at Canossa, pleading for the White House voluntarily to share information. The House and Senate Armed Services committees need vastly greater manpower and experts to oversee the nearly trillion-dollar annual, unaudited Pentagon spending. On 9/11, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld shared that $3 trillion in Pentagon funds accumulated over an unknown number of years could not be accounted for. Congress retains the power to return to the pre-Gingrich era. Under the Constitution, the House and Senate decide their respective budgets with no outside interference. Congress can and should raise salaries and retain experts to attract talent and make serving as congressional staff a financially viable professional career. Congress should institutionalize the recruitment of staff and experts from universities and the private sector based more on competence in discharging constitutional responsibilities and less on personal loyalty or nepotism. Overseeing and reforming a federal government that spends more than $6.5 trillion annually, regulates every nook and cranny of economic life, and groans under a national debt exceeding $34 trillion is too important to do anything less. President John Quincy Adams left the presidency in 1829. He served in the House of Representatives from 1831 to 1848, acquiring fame in opposing the gag rule, which forbid discussion of slavery in the House, and the Mexican-American War, fueled by presidential lies. Adams’ congressional service was not a demotion but a professional and constitutional step up. Today, it is inconceivable that a president would follow in his footsteps. That needs to change fast, or the executive branch will continue to run roughshod over the Constitution, Congress, and the American people. JD Vance: ‘Neocon’ Foreign Policy Led to Isolationism

Leaders on both sides of the aisle haven’t learned from America’s foreign policy failures, Sens. Rand Paul and JD Vance asserted Thursday at a Capitol Hill event.  Both GOP lawmakers called out their party leader—Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell—by name. Vance, R-Ohio, accused “neocons” of wanting to go to war with China and stop trading with the communist regime.  “I think the neoconservative approach to China is sort of the dumbest of all possible solutions. They want the Chinese to manufacture all of our stuff, and they also want to go to war with China,” Vance said. “Put me firmly in the category of: I don’t want to go to war with China, and I want them to make our stuff.” Paul, R-Ky., noting that he’s been called an “isolationist,” attempted to turn the table on McConnell, the senior senator from their common state of Kentucky.  “What are the McConnells of this world and those beating the drums with China want to do? They want to end trade with China, a big trading partner with a lot of stuff,” Paul said.  “I’m not here to say the Chinese government is a great government,” he said. “I wrote a whole book talking about how they, in all likelihood, knew the coronavirus came from a lab. So I have no love for the Chinese communists. But I think ending trade is a disaster and hurts both sides.” Paul and Vance spoke at an event sponsored by the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, a think tank, titled “What a Foreign Policy for the Middle Class Looks Like.”  The two senators, along with other speakers, argued that foreign entanglements endanger America’s domestic economy.   Paul also said he doesn’t care for Saudi Arabia, but disagrees with neoconservative colleagues who seek to end trade with the Muslim nation.  “I wouldn’t sell them arms, but I wouldn’t have an embargo and I wouldn’t quit trading with them,” Paul said of Saudi Arabia. “So really there’s a bit of isolationism that actually goes into the neoconservatives. They’re the ones who want to ban trade with countries.” Paul and Vance used the terms “neoconservatives” or “neocons” broadly to describe lawmakers in Washington that supported continued arming of Ukraine in its defense against an invading Russia.  Vance asserted that foreign commitments to Israel and Ukraine are different.  “I’m supportive of Israel and their war against Hamas. I certainly admire the Ukrainians who are fighting against Russia, but I do not think that it is in America’s interest to continue to fund an effectively never-ending war in Ukraine,” Vance said.  Vance said there is no end in sight to the Russia-Ukraine war, and U.S. funding allows Europe to do nothing.  The Ohio Republican stressed that a big reason Americans care about Israel is because the U.S. remains a majority Christian country.  From there, Vance launched into a verbal indictment of neoconservative foreign-intervention policies, asserting that the Iraq War—of which he is a veteran—ultimately led to another Iran proxy in the Middle East as well as to a genocide of Christians.  “If George W. Bush had stood before the American people in 2003 and said: ‘Hey, guys, we’re going to go to war, not to eradicate weapons of mass destruction or to spread democracy, we’re going to go to war to create a regional proxy for Iran and … our actions will lead to the genocide of a historical Christian community,’ I don’t think Americans would have supported it,” Vance said. Omar Shrugs Off Harassment of Jewish Student, Faults UCLA for Not Protecting Anti-Israel Protesters

As three college presidents testified about antisemitism amid anti-Israel protests and riots on their campuses, a prominent House Democrat brushed off concerns about a Jewish student’s inability to walk on a path at the University of California at Los Angeles and went on to fault UCLA for not protecting anti-Israel protesters. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., responded to a video in which anti-Israel protesters blocked a Jewish student wearing a Star of David necklace from walking on campus. Jewish student wearing a Star of David necklace DENIED entry to his own university because he is JEWISH. “I’m a UCLA student. I deserve to go here. We pay tuition. This is our school and they are not letting me walk in.” Masked activists refused to let the student enter.… pic.twitter.com/MeOjg8hTf4— Afshine Emrani MD FACC (@afshineemrani) April 29, 2024 Omar asked UCLA Chancellor Gene Block whether the student would still be able to access the campus via other routes. “Chancellor Block, just for clarification, that video we just watched, we saw people moving around,” she said. “Was it possible, do you think, for that student to be able to get into campus? Was that student actually being blocked from entering campus?” “Well, that was in the middle of campus,” Block responded. “They’re not being blocked from being on campus, maybe being blocked from a pathway on campus.” “He should be allowed to pass,” the chancellor added. “I mean, any part of campus is open to students, so blocking him was really inappropriate.” ?Ilhan Omar minimizes the harassment of a Jewish student. Anti-Israel?? protesters physically blocked the student on campus, but Omar suggested the incident didn't matter because it was still "possible" for him to access campus.https://t.co/6xC9rdz6Xb pic.twitter.com/Jgx0Prhk2b— Tyler O'Neil (@Tyler2ONeil) May 23, 2024 Omar went on to condemn Block’s administration, claiming UCLA failed to adequately protect the anti-Israel protesters. Anti-Israel protesters had established an encampment outside UCLA’s Royce Hall for a week until authorities declared it an unlawful assembly and arrested more than 200 people. Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., slammed UCLA’s leaders for having “allowed their campus to become a severe and pervasive, hostile environment for Jewish students, standing by as students, faculty, and affiliates were assaulted and harassed.” “For days, the unlawful encampment’s checkpoints illegally denied students access to campus buildings,” the North Carolina lawmaker added. Foxx claimed that “Jewish students were attacked, harassed, and intimidated for walking on their own campus” and students were “denied a safe and uninterrupted learning environment.” Omar referenced reports that UCLA campus police failed to intervene in an April 30 incident between the encamped protesters and a group that attacked them. The assailants reportedly beat protesters, hitting them with poles, spraying chemical irritants, and setting off fireworks. CNN claimed it identified two of the assailants, who support Israel. The day after the attack, the UCLA chapter of the Jewish student group Hillel denounced “fringe members of the off-campus Jewish community,” urging them to “stay off our campus,” and warning that their “actions are harming Jewish students.” Block announced on May 6 that a UCLA campus safety officer had launched a law enforcement investigation to identify the perpetrators of the violence and to hold them to account. The Los Angeles Police Department assigned a detective to assist those efforts, and the FBI may also help. The chancellor also said UCLA spoke to Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, asking him to help ensure “that the instigators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” Block also announced that campus safety officers would conduct an overall analysis of “all acts of violence over the last 12 days, including those against counterprotesters.” UCLA reassigned John Thomas, the campus police chief, on Wednesday. Critics faulted Thomas for failing to intervene during the April 30 attack. “You could have prevented this by protecting the diverse groups of pro-Palestinian students that were peacefully gathered on campus to share meals set in solidarity against the brutal genocide,” Omar said Thursday. “You could have prevented this by protecting these students’ First Amendment right to assemble.” Omar also faulted UCLA for failing to act “when there was an anonymous group funded, [which] constructed a giant video with loudspeakers to play vile and disturbing footage,” an apparent reference to pro-Israel counterprotesters who set up a screen playing footage of the brutal Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel on Oct. 7. “You could have prevented this when you saw an angry mob on campus on the night of April 30th, but you did not,” the Minnesota Democrat added. “Instead, you, the UCLA leadership and law enforcement, stood by for hours as the mob of agitators gathered near the encampment with a clear intention to cause violence.” Omar concluded her remarks by asking, “How did you fail the students at many critical points where you could have intervened?” “Thank you for the question, but I’m sorry, I reject the premise,” Block responded. Omar interrupted him, asking, “Are these pictures lying? Are any of these people in jail?” “Can I finish my statement?” he asked. “No,” Omar replied. “Are any of these people in jail?” The Los Angeles Police Department is “working on trying to identify the people who were assailants that evening,” the chancellor said. He noted that “this encampment was against policy, this violated time, place, and manner.” Even so, he said, “We tried to get police there as quickly as possible.” ?Ilhan Omar condemns UCLA for failing to protect anti-Israel protesters. UCLA Chancellor Gene Block rejected the premise of her question, and when he attempted to answer, she interrupted him. https://t.co/6xC9rdz6Xb pic.twitter.com/feE09qePoh— Tyler O'Neil (@Tyler2ONeil) May 23, 2024 Block testified alongside Michael Schill, president of Northwestern University, and Jonathan Holloway, the president of Rutgers University. Anti-Israel protests have taken place at campuses throughout the country, often involving reported harassment of Jewish students. Hostin Blasts WNBA Star Caitlin Clark for Being ‘White’ and ‘Pretty’

If beauty is only skin deep, that explains the ugly heart of the staunchly racist and anti-Semitic co-host of ABC’s The View, Sunny Hostin (the descendant of slave owners). During Wednesday’s show, she lashed out at WNBA star Caitlin Clark “because she's white, because she's attractive,” and because she’s not a lesbian. Hostin, who sits on the board of advocates for the WNBA’s Players Association, seemed to resent that Clark was poised to bring a bunch of new fans and sponsorship opportunities to the league that WNBA star Brittney Griner couldn’t and chalked it up to her skin color because of it: At all. And the WNBA started in 1996. First games played in 1997. It's 2024, and we're just really now talking about it and so if Caitlin Clark is the vehicle that will bring this sport that I have loved so much and so long to little 5-year-old girls playing in Harlem, I say yes, bravo. I have no problem with that. [Applause] With that being said, I do think that there is a thing called pretty privilege. There is a thing called white privilege. There is a thing called tall privilege. And we have to acknowledge that, and so part of it is about race because if you think about the Brittney Griners of the world, you know.     I don’t know Sunny, maybe people don’t like her because of her anti-American comments. Just a thought. The chronically bitter View host doubled down and deduced that Clark was able to do all this because she was white, pretty, and straight. “But I do think that she is more relatable to more people because she's white, because she's attractive, and unfortunately, there still is that stigma against the LGBTQ+ community,” she declared. Hostin suggested that one of the reasons people didn’t like the WNBA was because “70 percent of the WNBA is black,” which was a ridiculous claim because it’s a similar statistic for the NBA. “And we have to do something about that stigma in this country. I think that people have a problem with basketball-playing women that are lesbians. Who cares?! They are great athletes!” she screeched. The transcript is below. Click "expand" to read: ABC’s The View May 23, 2024 11:06:35 AM (…) SUNNY HOSTIN: You know I've been a basketball fan since I can remember. I played basketball with my dad in Harlem when I was 5 years old. So, I remember loving the game, and the game not necessarily loving women back. Right? WHOOPI GOLDBERG: At all. HOSTIN: At all. Why did she have to go to play in Russia? GOLDBERG: Because they wouldn't pay her! HOSTIN: Because they wouldn't pay her. GOLDBERG: Because they wouldn’t pay. Not because she was black, but because they didn't believe in the WNBA. HOSTIN: Well this is part of my point. So now, Caitlin Clark is bringing this money, these sponsorships— GOLDBERG: We hope. HOSTIN: We hope, into the league and other players will benefit from it. But I do think that she is more relatable to more people because she's white, because she's attractive, and unfortunately, there still is that stigma against the LGBTQ+ community. 70 percent of the WNBA is black; a third of the players are in the LGBTQ+ community. And we have to do something about that stigma in this country. I think that people have a problem with basketball-playing women that are lesbians. Who cares?! They are great athletes! (…)

Liquor store owner shoots shoplifting suspect; NYC district attorney presses charges against owner

Outraged New York City residents are banding together to defend a liquor store owner who is facing serious charges after he shot a man who was caught on video stealing from his store. Surveillance video showed two men, later identified as Edwin Poaquiza and Kevin Pullatasi, walk into the liquor store owned by Francisco Valerio on Wyckoff Avenue. Portions of the security video were published by WABC-TV. 'All the time, we ask them to leave. But this time was different.'The video shows the two men being confronted by Valerio and another customer. The owner accuses Poaquiza of stealing off-camera while Pullatasi appears to stash a bottle of liquor in his jacket. A customer tells him to put it back before both men are pushed out of the store. Outside, the video shows Pullatasi return and appear to challenge Valerio to a fight before the owner pulls out a gun. He strikes Pullatasi, and the gun goes off. The 20-year-old was shot in the abdomen once. Valerio told a detective that the shooting was accidental, and his defenders say it was in self-defense. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz charged both men but nailed the store owner with far worse charges than those assessed against the shoplifter. "Two crimes resulted in three people being charged. The store owner was physically attacked by one of the men. Unfortunately, as alleged, that led to a reckless shooting by the store owner on a public street in broad daylight," said Katz. Valerio has been charged with assault in the second and third degrees, reckless endangerment in the first degree, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a press release from Katz's office said.Pullatasi is expected to face only assault and petit larceny charges. 'Do the right thing by him. He's one of the good ones.' Defenders of the store owner say he was acting in self-defense. "It's all based through the eyes of the person who was involved. Only Frank knows the circumstances that he was facing," said Johnny Nunez, a friend of the family. "We have one crime, one crime. They were stealing. Frank did not commit a crime."His wife of 30 years says they would lose the store if he was convicted. "These few days have been very, very hard. You would think somebody that is always doing the right thing, by others, by his peers, by everybody, and then this small incident happen, and he can lose his freedom over that? I don't know what to say," said Jael Valerio. "If he has to go to jail, I don't know what the kids are going to do," she added. The owner's family says he has a permit to carry concealed. Valerio's brother, Miguel Valerio, said that the two alleged thieves were familiar to the family. "It's been bad. We've been dealing with these guys all the time. And all the time, we ask them to leave. But this time was different," he explained. Fernando Mateo of the United Bodegas of America held a press conference to defend Francisco Valerio and demand that the district attorney drop the charges against him. "Francisco did not know what [the suspect] had in his hand. Could've been a gun, could've been a knife," said Mateo. They pointed out that Valerio, who is 53 years old, has no previous criminal record. "New York is our witness. We're not asking the district attorney for anything that's not fair," Mateo added. "Do the right thing by him. He's one of the good ones," said his wife. Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!
