Media Claim Park Service Staff Cuts Causing Chaos at Parks – and Bury NPS Reassurances

Editor’s Note: The item below has been cross-posted from our sister site, MRCTV.org, which first published it on Wednesday. Legacy media are running headlines claiming that staff cuts at the National Park Service (NPS) are causing chaos for visitors – but, if you read down far enough, their stories note that that the park experience won’t suffer. The staff cuts at the Park Service – many of which are simply withdrawals of job offers – are part of the effort by President Donald Trump and his Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to weed out and eliminate wasteful government spending. “National parks already feel the effects of layoffs, even before the busy season starts,” NPR warns in a headline for a story claiming that “federal layoffs and staffing shortages threaten many of the services they provide for their millions of annual visitors, from reservations to cleanup to education.” “Long lines and canceled rentals: Firings bring chaos to national parks,” a Washington Post headline declares in a story claiming “Trump’s purge of federal employees is already harming the visitor experience at national parks across the country.” “The National Park Service is grappling with massive layoffs. What you should know,” reads a USA Today headline for a story reporting that “Park advocates warn that the layoffs will negatively impact the parks' ability to serve visitors and protect resources.” “Newly hired National Park staff ‘devastated’ after losing ‘dream job’ amid Trump cuts” is the headline for a Miami Herald story quoting “a ranger who appears to have worked at Yosemite National Park” calling the layoffs that cost him his job “flat-out reckless.” All these foreboding stories have one thing in common: they all (eventually) get around to reporting a reassuring promise by a Park Service spokeswoman. Readers have to stick it out to the 32nd paragraph of the NPR article, in order to find the good news: “When asked about safety and economic concerns, J. Elizabeth Peace, a spokesperson for the Department of the Interior, told NPR that the NPS — which it houses — is hiring seasonal workers ‘to continue enhancing the visitor experience as we embrace new opportunities for optimization and innovation in workforce management.’ "‘We are focused on ensuring that every visitor has the chance to explore and connect with the incredible, iconic spaces of our national parks,’ she added. ‘As always, NPS will continue to provide critical services and deliver excellent customer service.’” USA Today buries the promise of “excellent customer service” in the 11th paragraph: “A National Park Service spokesperson told USA TODAY, ‘The National Park Service is working closely with the Office of Personnel Management to ensure we are prioritizing fiscal responsibility for the American people. As always, NPS will continue to provide critical services and deliver excellent customer service.’” The Washington Post mentions the quote in the eighth paragraph. The Miami Herald waits only five paragraphs, but wastes no time getting back to fearmongering in the very next paragraph: “‘It’s chaos everywhere,’ a former seasonal park ranger at Alaska’s Denali National Park and Preserve told the outlet. ‘I don’t know what the next couple of months are going to bring.’” In an interview last Wednesday, Interior Department Secretary Doug Burgum promised Americans that the quality of the nation’s parks wouldn’t suffer, despite the staff cuts: Fox News: “Can you assure people, I guess, that the parks are going to be okay with the numbers [of Park Service staff] that you leave?” Sec. Burgum: “Yes, absolutely. And again, as we work to reinvent government and right-size government to the right size, that's a mandate that the Americans are fully supportive of President Trump doing.” This time, legacy media outlets refused to even report the reassurance – even though Interior Sec. Burgum’s promise was even more forceful and unequivocal than the spokeswoman’s comment they buried.

CBS News Triples Down on Defending 60 Minutes-Kamala Interview, as Paramount Enters Mediation with Trump

CBS News Triples Down on Defending 60 Minutes-Kamala Interview, as Paramount Enters Mediation with Trump

CBS News is still smarting over Paramount’s decision to release the full transcript of the creatively-edited 60 Minutes interview with Vice President Kamala Harris, which removed significant word salads from her responses. The beleaguered CBS Evening News is still defending the interview, even as the parties move closer to settling the $20B lawsuit. Here is the full item defending the interview, which aired on the “Evening News Roundup” segment of the CBS Evening News on Wednesday, February 26th, 2025: MAURICE DuBOIS: At that (Cabinet) meeting, the president made a false claim about the 60 Minutes interview with Vice President Kamala Harris last fall. The president claimed that after Harris was asked a question, quote: "They took out her answer and they inserted an entirely different answer", end quote. Not true. What viewers saw and heard was Harris' answer to the original question. The transcript shows, as 60 Minutes has said repeatedly, the broadcast was not doctored or deceitful. And you can watch the full, unedited interview for yourself on CBS News dot com. The record reflects that CBS News got caught red-handed while editing Vice President Kamala Harris’s responses to correspondent Bill Whitaker, and that the network got caught airing different responses to the same question on 60 Minutes versus on Face the Nation. As our colleague Nick Fondacaro noted when the raw video and transcript were released pursuant to the demand of these by the Federal Communications Commission: After reviewing the video (clip from the raw video below), NewsBusters can confirm that what appeared on 60 Minutes was highly edited. Not only did they edit what appeared on 60 Minutes, they also edited what appeared on Face the Nation, including cutting out a hard hitting question that called out the Biden-Harris administration for looking weak on the world stage. … But what CBS did was pluck out a fragment of a sentence that was in the middle of a word salad being spoken by candidate a with a problem connecting with voters. Again, they also edited out their reporter asking a question with critical analysis against said candidate. They later followed up with a different 60 Minutes episode smearing said candidate’s opponent. Compare what CBS actually did in furtherance of Harris’s candidacy to Maurice DuBois’ labored copy, which focuses on the semantics of Trump’s statement. There was indeed some taking out, and viewers saw something different to what was originally said. CBS News is desperately trying to cling to some shred of credibility in the midst of turmoil which includes cratering ratings subsequent to the ouster of anchor Norah O’Donnell, and a much-criticized overhaul of the Evening News (we told you so). But the news division’s tripling down comes as its corporate parent, Paramount, has decided to enter into mediation with Trump- a necessary step towards coming into agreement on a settlement. Per The New York Post: Lawyers representing Paramount and Donald Trump have agreed to bring in a mediator to facilitate discussions about a possible settlement in the president’s ongoing $20 billion lawsuit against subsidiary CBS, according to a report. The decision to bring in a third party signals a potential effort by both sides to resolve the dispute outside of court, according to the New York Times. The lawsuit filed by Trump accuses the CBS show “60 Minutes” of deceptively editing an interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris, whose long-winded answer to a question about the Israel-Hamas conflict was condensed. The decision to continually defend malicious and deceptive editing in the midst of potential settlement negotiations is but the latest in a string of incidents standing as proof evident of the decline and fall of CBS News.

'It's a bargain': Trump floats plan to let foreigners buy American residency for $5 million

President Donald Trump announced a plan this week to begin selling residency in the U.S. to those qualifying foreign nationals who are willing to cough up several million dollars. "You have a green card. This is a gold card," Trump said while signing executive orders Tuesday. "We're going to be putting a price on that card of about $5 million, and that's going to give you green card privileges plus." Trump said that his gold card initiative would not only extract a one-time lump sum payment from successful and/or wealthy migrants but prompt them to spend "a lot of money," pay full taxes, and employ locals in the United States. He indicated further that American companies could buy gold cards on behalf of foreign talent. The president suggested that more than 1 million vetted candidates might opt in to the program in hopes of securing a pathway to citizenship. This would mean a $5 trillion payday on gold card acquisitions alone. When discussing the program further during his Cabinet meeting Wednesday, Trump stated, "I happen to think it's going to sell like crazy. It's a bargain." Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated that the gold card initiative would be an improvement on the existing investment visa program known as EB-5, which he said was "full of nonsense, make-believe, and fraud, and it was a way to get a green card that was low-priced." 'It's going to sell like crazy.' Under the EB-5 program, foreign investors, their spouses, and their unmarried children under the age of 21 are eligible to apply for permanent residence if they commit to investing at least $1.05 million in a U.S.-based commercial enterprise as well as to creating or preserving 10 permanent full-time jobs for American workers. "The president said, 'Rather than having this sort of ridiculous EB-5 program, we're going to end the EB-5 program,'" said Lutnick. "'We're going to replace it with the Trump gold card.'" Lutnick and Trump indicated that the program would help pay down the deficit. After Trump appeared to suggest that applicants from any nation could apply, a reporter asked whether Russian oligarchs would be eligible. The president expressed an openness but noted they're likely "not quite as wealthy as they used to be." While the president insisted it is within his authority to replace the EB-5 visa program and institute his own, Forbes noted that the U.S. Constitution assigns Congress the authority to regulate immigration under Article 1, Section 8. Consequently, Trump's plan may face significant legal challenges even with Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress. Numerous countries around the globe have similar golden visa programs whereby individuals can secure residence by investment. According to London-based consultancy Henley & Partners, Canada, the United Kingdom, and over 60% of EU member states have active golden visa programs. Like Blaze News?
