With her brain-dead price controls, Kamala is finally fleshing out an economic plan. So far it’s pretty bad: more spending, taxes, mandates, amnesty, subsidies for the rich, and price controls to empty the shelves. Meanwhile, as in his first term, Trump focuses on reducing costs on production—cutting taxes, cutting overregulation and mandates. And, of course: Drill, baby, drill. There are, to be fair, two points of overlap: spending and tariffs. In a recent video, I mentioned Trump’s spending has been about average for recent presidents, while President Joe Biden has doubled that between program increases and boondoggles like Build Back Better. Kamala doesn’t have a record to run on, but so far she’s to the left of Biden on every economic issue—she wants to repeal all Trump tax cuts, not, like Biden, just those for Americans making above $400,000. And she’s promised to ban all fracking, not just on public lands like Biden. And, of course, price controls. So it’s probably fair to assume Kamala would be worse on spending than Biden, who spent twice what Trump spent. And then there’s tariffs. When he was president, Trump put tariffs on roughly $380 billion worth of Chinese goods. While mainstream economists predicted Armageddon, a subsequent study found 80% of those tariffs were actually paid by China—Beijing reimbursed exporters, kindly paying our taxes for us. What’s left had a negligible impact on inflation: During the height of the tariffs in 2018 and 2019, inflation was 1.5%. It continued at that level until Biden took office in 2021. Moreover, Biden kept most of the Trump tariffs and, given tariffs are bought by industry lobbyists, it’s a safe bet Kamala would keep them too. Having said that, Trump now is promising much higher tariffs—up to 60% against China and 10% tariffs on every other country. China may not be able to reimburse its exporters 80% again—it’s too much money. Nor would Mexico. So we could be looking at something like $500 billion in additional costs to American consumers—about 2% in inflation terms. And for perspective, about the same as Trump would save if he cuts energy costs in half with more drilling, as he is promising. Of course, keep in mind the $500 billion isn’t pure cost: It reduces imports by several hundred billion, creating several hundred thousand jobs. Moreover, that $500 billion is new government revenue that could also, as Trump has promised, pay for cuts to income taxes—no tax on tips, no tax on Social Security—or more across-the-board cuts. Considering income taxes are much worse, economically—income taxes punish production—you actually could end up with lower inflation with tariffs. So what’s next? The media will obsess on tariffs because it’s all they’ve got. But tariffs pale in comparison to government spending and overregulation—estimates peg over-regulation as spurring at least 20% of inflation—four-plus trillion a year. And, unlike tariffs, government mandates don’t buy you jobs; they destroy jobs. Finally, the big kahuna: government spending. Biden’s spending orgy bought us not 2% inflation but 20% inflation in three short years. If Kamala Harris the president is as left wing as Kamala the candidate, she’ll easily top that. Despite the external pressures, Zuckerberg emphasized that the final decisions on content moderation lay with Facebook, admitting regret over some of the decisions made under this pressure. “In 2021, senior officials from the Biden Administration…repeatedly pressured our teams for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire,” Zuckerberg stated, reflecting on the administration’s actions which he now believes were “wrong.” He expressed regret that Meta was not more outspoken against this pressure at the time: “Ultimately, it was our decision whether or not to take content down, and we own our decisions.” In a separate disclosure, Zuckerberg detailed interactions with the FBI, which had warned the company of a potential Russian disinformation campaign targeting the Biden family and their association with Burisma ahead of the 2020 elections. This led to the suppression of a New York Post story involving corruption allegations against Joe Biden’s family, which was later determined not to be Russian disinformation. Zuckerberg expressed regret over this decision as well, noting significant changes in Meta’s policy to avoid such actions in the future. “It’s since been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story,” Zuckerberg conceded, alleging a policy shift to prevent future such occurrences: “We’ve changed our policies and processes to make sure this doesn’t happen again.” Additionally, Zuckerberg addressed his contributions through the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to support electoral infrastructure during the pandemic, aiming to assist local election jurisdictions. He defended these contributions as non-partisan, though acknowledged public skepticism about the impartiality of such support. “My goal is to be neutral and not play a role one way or another,” he affirmed, signaling a withdrawal from similar contributions in future electoral cycles. A firefighter and his wife have been arrested for allegedly forcing an underage person to have sex at their home in Riverview, Florida. 39-year-old Sascha Engel worked as a Fire Rescue lieutenant for Hillsborough County and his wife, 37-year-old Alyssa Engel, worked previously for the state attorney's office before they were arrested. 'This egregious violation of innocence is disgraceful and goes against every value we stand for.' The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said that the Engels had a 16-year-old male visiting at their home overnight in March when they forced him to have sex with Alyssa Engel. The teenager later told a trusted adult about the incident, and that adult went to the police. When Alyssa Engel was interviewed by police, she allegedly admitted to walking around naked in front of the teenager but denied that anything else happened. Both were charged with three counts each of unlawful sex with a minor. The trial will be moved out of Hillsborough County to Polk County in order to avoid any conflict from Alyssa Engel's previous employment at the state attorney's office in Hillsborough County. Sheriff Chad Chronister excoriated the couple in a statement about the arrests. “It is both disgusting and deeply disappointing to see not one, but two adults join together to take advantage of a young child, especially when one of those adults is a trusted authority in our community,” he said. “This egregious violation of innocence is disgraceful and goes against every value we stand for in this community.”Sascha Engel was placed on administrative leave without pay after his arrest. On Friday, the Engels appeared in court, where a judge ordered a bail of $50k per count, which added up to $300k for the two. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s suspension of his campaign and endorsement of Donald Trump on Friday are a testament to why Trump has maintained his longevity in politics despite his controversial persona, crippling legal attacks, and endless bad press. Contrary to media narratives, Trump’s unanticipated rise to popularity does not stem from a far-right threat to democracy, but rather from genuine grassroots concerns related to the direction of America under the rule of increasingly illiberal forces on the left. Kennedy’s commitment to speaking truths unpopular in mass media and Democratic circles led CNN to cut away from its live coverage of his speech. Kennedy focused the defense of his endorsement on the grounds common to many who begrudgingly support Trump’s presidency. This includes his interests in alleviating the suffering of the poor and his commitment to core American values diametrically opposed by the modern iteration of the Democratic Party. The structure of tyranny Kennedy credibly bolsters his position by understanding tyranny. Instead of focusing on rhetoric, he sharpens his analysis on how power truly operates, observing that the consolidation of power — not mean tweets — creates fertile ground for tyrannical rule. This endorsement was a repudiation of the Democratic Party and what RFK Jr. described as the “consolidation of corporate and econ power,” a consolidation he believes would be “complete” should the Democratic Party have another four years of power over the United States. And it is the Democratic Party, not Donald Trump, that possesses the institutional backing capable of ushering in the tyranny Democrats rhetorically decry. The lack of actual democratic processes and procedures within the Democratic Party is not lost on Kennedy, who accurately described his former party as cynically saving democracy by systematically dismantling it. Kennedy spoke Friday of high stakes and focused on the structural reality of how democracy is destroyed. At its core, his message was equally uplifting and depressing. It was inspiring because he spoke to the American people as a true statesman, someone interested in the well-being of the country rather than pandering to create a perception popular among the powerful and well connected. Still, his words were tainted with pain. Kennedy grew up immersed in Democratic politics, and he never intended to break with his family's party. However, he chose to place principle over party or power, setting an example of virtue for the public. Despite this, his commitment to speaking truths that are unpopular in mass media and Democratic circles led CNN to cut away from its live coverage of his speech. Censorship serves Democratic Party power This incident only reinforces one of Kennedy’s main critiques of the current Democratic Party: It is a party of elites who maintain their grip on power through anti-democratic means. These methods include the weaponization of government agencies and, crucially, the propaganda spread by the party’s “mouthpieces” and “stenographers” in corporate newsrooms. His challenge of the media as “organs” of the Democratic Party is integral to his understanding of the party as an existential threat to the American way of life. He diagnoses the problems associated with the near-monopoly the Democratic Party has on mainstream outlets, stating the truth, not lies, is censored by those in power. RFK’s alarm over the “resort to censorship and media control” highlights the dire state of America’s current political life. A sitting U.S. president’s ability to use the bully pulpit to collude with or coerce media companies into censoring political speech represents an overt attack on “the most sacred right of free expression,” which lies at the heart of the American experiment in self-governance. Kennedy’s sincerity and courage serve as a bittersweet reminder of what was once revered in American politics. He now stands as a traitor to a party that abandoned its principles in pursuit of power. Despite his family’s statement denouncing his endorsement of Trump, Kennedy placed his principles above power, popularity, and convenience. In a sea of imposters and charlatans jockeying for power, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. remains a man who places people before partisan politics. He may prove to be the nation’s last true Democrat.
