DOMESTIC. Although the number of police officers was increased by 2,500 people last year, the number of crimes investigated and prosecuted remained at the same level as the year before and the number of illegal immigrants apprehended also remained at an unchanged level. This is shown in the police's annual report, TT reports.
The crime prevention work also went poorly during the year, but the work to prevent and investigate serious crimes connected to criminal networks has, according to the annual report, been successful, writes TT.
In the area of internal immigration checks, the number of checks almost doubled – but without a corresponding increase in the number of illegal immigrants identified, which remained basically unchanged compared to the previous year.
Improvements can be seen in some areas, however.
For example, the percentage of solved fatal shootings in Stockholm increased from 16 to 70 percent, according to the new national police chief, Petra Lundh.
The 2,500 additional police officers raised the total force to 37,359 employed police officers throughout the country.
In the area of public order and safety, the police report no noticeable change.
Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) now wants to see improvements in the handling of more everyday crimes such as theft and assault, as well as a shortening of the waiting times to reach the police contact center.
- There is more to do there, he tells TT.
Although the total proportion of police officers on external duty increased, their proportion in relation to the entire police force decreased during the year.
The number of police cameras rose from 535 to 859, with a target of 1,600 by the end of next year.
The police assess that the level of service to the public has generally remained stagnant during the year.
